Welcome to Cambridge Cambridge has the edge when it comes to beauty, history and culture. This elegant yet compact city boasts spectacular architecture in the shape of colleges, chapels, churches and courtyards combined with green parks, wide open spaces and the River Cam, which winds through its heart. Learning has always been central to this city, home to the University of Cambridge and its 31 Colleges. You can shop within sight of the magnificent spires of King’s College Chapel, see wisteria that would rival Kew Gardens, London, climbing the walls of Jesus College and sit in the pub where Crick and Watson sketched the structure of DNA. Culture abounds in the shape of museums, galleries, theatres, art centres and festivals, with programmes to stimulate, inspire and entertain. It is a city for everyone, a family-friendly destination with places to go and things to do and see throughout the year. Enjoy a choice of restaurants and cafes, from fine dining and cosmopolitan cuisine to riverbank picnicking. Venture further afield to discover picture-perfect Cambridgeshire villages and inviting gastro pubs with fine food and roaring log fires. Shopping is a delight in Cambridge with its unrivalled mix of elegant cobbled streets and crescents, quality and quirky independent shops,

Cambridge is a special city, a place where visitors can feel at home. Getting out and about is easy – be it by bicycle or on foot – and there is a range of accommodation to suit all budgets from stylish hotels to countryside bed and breakfasts. History & Heritage Cambridge is one of the UK’s most iconic cities. Its elegant centre is framed by architectural triumphs, surrounded by green spaces and home to the University of Cambridge’s world-famous colleges. Great St Mary’s Church
Cambridge wears its history and heritage with pride. Where else can you enjoy the friendly and lively bustle of the Market Square, just a cobblestone’s throw from the gleaming spires of King’s College Chapel? Follow in the footsteps of the city’s luminaries including Darwin, Tennyson and Plath to name but a few. Poets, philosophers, scientists, medics, engineers, prime ministers and Nobel Peace Prize winners have all left their mark here.
The Corpus Clock
Wherever you walk in Cambridge you are close to something special. Take time to admire the picturesque waters of the River Cam and gaze in wonder at The Bridge of Sighs and The Mathematical Bridge. The Round Church, one of the city’s oldest buildings, The Great Court at Trinity and The Wren Library are but a few of the other sights to take in. Stop for a pint at The Eagle pub where Nobelists Crick and Watson sketched the structure of DNA on a napkin, or contemplate some of our contemporary architecture in the shape of The Corpus Clock, with its giant grasshopper that eats time. Follow the river upstream as it meanders through grassy fields to the Orchard Tea Garden at Grantchester, the picture-perfect English village which poet Rupert Brooke famously celebrated in his 1912 poem The Old Vicarage.

Ely even has its very own Eel Festival weekend which is one of the many events held throughout the year. Ely’s riverside is a favourite spot for visitors to relax, take a boat trip, enjoy afternoon tea or simply watch the activity on the river. Before returning home, make sure you try out one of our many traditional restaurants, specialising in locally sourced produce. Ely’s Tourist Information provides a wealth of information and advice to help make the most of your visit. We also run an extensive range of guided walks throughout the year and our Ghost Tours are legendary! We look forward to welcoming you soon. St Ives
St Ives is a wonderful riverside town, tourist centre and thriving community. It is located just off the A14, six miles from Huntingdon and 12miles from Cambridge on the banks of the river Great Ouse. The Guided Busway provides an easy access route from Cambridge with buses running on a regular basis. For something more leisurely, you can walk or cycle along the 14 miles of traffic-free footpath and cycleway that runs beside the busway. The route takes in the riverside scenery of the Great Ouse and the bird reserve at Fen Drayton lakes. For the waterborne visitor, the Ouse connects with the network of waterways in the Fens and the local boatyard offers an extensive chandlery. Day-boat hire is available in the area. The St Ives shopping centre has a good mix of independent traders and multinationals and the original character is retained with regular markets held every Monday and Friday. Bank Holiday markets are very popular. On the first and third Saturdays of each month an excellent, award winning Farmers’ Market takes place. A focal point is the splendid fifteenth century Bridge and Chapel over the river which is one of only three such surviving bridges in England. Just upstream, Holt Island Nature Reserve is a delightful green oasis within walking distance. The combination of its rich past with its exciting future makes twenty-first century St Ives a wonderful place to live, or just to visit, and you will find a warm welcome in our 900-year-old streets.

Saffron Walden is a medieval, rural market town of great charm, just 15 miles to the south of Cambridge, and easily reached by car or public transport. It has a rich heritage of old buildings, including St Mary’s Church, the largest and one of the most beautiful parish churches in Essex, as well as a friendly, award winning museum. On the north side of town is Bridge End Garden, a newly restored Victorian garden of great charm, which contains a wonderful yew hedge maze and sunken Dutch garden. A market has been held in Saffron Walden since 1141, and market days are now Tuesdays and Saturdays with shoppers enjoying browsing and buying goods from a wide variety of market stalls. In and around the Market Place, there are many independent shops and eating places to choose from. The town is also well known for its art galleries and antique shops. Audley End House, one of the finest Jacobean mansions in the country, is situated 1 mile from Saffron Walden and is well worth combining with a visit to the town. Please check opening times prior to your visit on www.english-heritage.org.uk For further information on Saffron Walden, including what to do, where to stay and the latest events, please see our website or contact the Tourist Information Centre on 01799 524002. We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful town!

St Neots is a charming market town, with a friendly and vibrant character. It is the largest town in Cambridgeshire and is located only 18 miles west of Cambridge. Nestled around the banks of the River Great Ouse, the town dates back over 1,000 years to the Medieval Priory of St Neot. The modern town includes Eynesbury, with its famous 19th century giant, and the Eatons with a unique lock-up and riverside Mill. The town centre offers a delightful shopping experience, where high quality modern stores and charming independent boutiques sit side by side. The town also boasts one of the largest market squares in England, many beautiful buildings, historic churches and an award winning museum. Beyond the town centre there is the beautiful Riverside Park to enjoy, which can be enjoyed by foot or bicycle. Other attractions include a bowling alley, a leisure centre and the excellent Rowley Arts Centre, with four restaurants and a six screen cinema complex which opens in February 2014. Stay a little longer There is so much to see and do in Cambridge and the surrounding areas that you won’t be able to fit everything you want to do into one day. Head out to some of the surrounding towns and enjoy the many sights and attractions that await you. Set in 350 square miles of fantastic cycling and walking countryside, the surrounding district of South Cambridgeshire offers historic monuments, houses and museums set in the tranquil and rural landscape. It provides a great location for everyone from the lively and adventurous to those who want to unwind and get away from it all. To the North of Cambridge is Ely – steeped in history and principally renowned for Ely Cathedral, a magnificent building with its unique Octagon Tower which dominates the landscape for miles around – a favourite spot for visitors wishing to relax, take a boat trip, browse through shops and galleries, enjoy afternoon tea or simply watch the activity on the river. If it’s horses and horseracing you are interested in, then head east towards the racing capital of the region – if you love racing then Newmarket is the place to visit!
Island Hall
Pick an afternoon event or book in for one of the Newmarket Nights on the July Course when first-class racing is followed by a major musical concert by top performers such as Meatloaf or McFly. To the West of Cambridge you’ll find Huntingdon, St Ives and St Neots – wonderful riverside towns with thriving communities and a friendly and vibrant character. All three towns are rich in heritage and charm, with plenty to offer the visitor. To the south of the city, en route to London, Saffron Walden offers a picturesque, medieval town, in north-west Essex. It has a rich heritage of old buildings reflecting its wealth as a rural market town. Plan your very own itinerary at www.visitcambridge.org before you arrive, to make the most of all Cambridge & Beyond has to offer.
