SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Cambridge is the perfect family-friendly destination. There is something to suit all ages and every budget, from treasure hunting at the city’s many free museums, picnicking and playing at Lammas Land park and paddling pool, or taking to the river to explore the city from the comfort of a chauffeured punt. All interests are well catered for by the University of Cambridge’s eight museums, which are all free to enter. Join Scott of the Antarctic, Captain RF Scott and his companions in the South Pole at the The Polar Museum: Scott Polar Research Institute Museum, where the national memorial to Scott houses a fascinating range of exhibits including penguins, kayaks and sledges to the diaries of Antarctic explorers. Children can even try on a selection of clothes worn to survive freezing temperatures. Pick up a free Fitz Kids activity pack at the Fitzwilliam Museum, full of challenges, art materials, quizzes, trails and games for young people to enjoy as they ponder the exhibits. Then there’s Kettle’s Yard, which houses a collection of contemporary art and offers a programme of events for children; the Museum of Zoology complete with a whale skeleton hanging over the entrance; the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology where you can see a 14-metre totem pole from Canada; the Museum of Classical Archaeology which houses one of the largest collections of plaster casts of Greek and Roman statues in the world; the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences where you can see a 125,000-year-old hippo found in Cambridgeshire and the Whipple Museum of the History of Science where you can study scientific instruments dating from the Middle Ages to the present day. You certainly won’t be bored… Just a mile from the city centre, Cambridge Leisure Park, offers one stop entertainment with a 9 screen cinema, 28 lane ten pin bowling, a health and fitness centre as well as a host of your favourite restaurant brands.

Beyond the city there is lots more. Go stargazing every Wednesday evening throughout winter at the Institute of Astronomy, in Madingley, where you can look through telescopes and learn about the night skies with members of the Cambridge Astronomical Association. The sky’s the limit at the award-winning Imperial War Museum, at Duxford, where you will find a collection of over 200 aircraft, including Concorde and Spitfire, all set within the preserved Battle of Britain airfield. Head out to Newmarket, home of horse racing, where children can tack-up a pretend horse, take to the saddle on a horse simulator and dress-up in racing silks at the National Horseracing Museum. The nature reserves across the county are not to be missed. At Wicken Fen, near Ely, you can spot the famous Konik ponies and go pond dipping to find a Great Crested Newt. Head to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust Welney, near Wisbech, between October and March, to watch in wonder at one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles when thousands of swans and ducks arrive at the reserve, migrating to the Ouse washes for winter.

There are lots of ways to explore the city with your family. Step out on a walking tour around the streets, take an active approach and see the sights from the seat of a bicycle, follow a sculpture trail to discover modern artworks, or become familiar with the spooky side of Cambridge after dark on a ghost tour – if you dare. Make tracks to the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, where there are family activities taking place on the first Saturday of every month and children can delight in the free Young Explorer backpack, designed for budding naturalists, containing binoculars, a bug viewer, spot-a-lot activity sheets and drawing materials.

Punting Along ‘The Backs’

EXPLORE GREEN SPACES Cambridge is a city of green and pleasant land. Riverside parks, grassy commons, cool meadows and flower-filled gardens shape the city as much as its history and heritage. Parks are plentiful. Jesus Green, close to Jesus College, is a green space in the city centre. The River Cam brushes its northern edge and an avenue of London plane trees provides a leafy canopy over footpaths. Boasting a skate park, tennis courts and perfect spots to picnic and relax, Jesus Green is famous for its open-air swimming pool, one of the few remaining 1920s lidos in the country, and the longest in Europe, stretching to 91 metres in length. Parker’s Piece is an open space used by locals to lounge around and play football and cricket on the grass; it is famous as the place where, in 1848, students agreed a set of simple guidelines for football which were to influence the development of the Football Association rules. Midsummer Common is an ancient area of grassland bordered by the River Cam, where you can see the boathouses of the Colleges of the University and watch the rowers on the water. Strawberry Fair, the summer fair held in June, takes place on Midsummer Common which is also home to grazing cattle. Lammas Land, on the edge of the city, has an excellent free play area for children, paddling pool and ice cream kiosk making it the perfect place for families. There are lots of shady trees providing cool picnic spots in summer and the park is open all year. Cycle and footpaths make Cambridge an easy and pleasant place to explore on foot or by bicycle, and there are many tour companies to show you the way. No trip to Cambridge is complete without punting; a number of punt companies provide chauffeured guided tours and the Riverboat Georgina offers cruises along the river. The Windmill at Over

A must-see Cambridge tradition is the Bumps, a bizarre rowing race that’s taken place on the Cam since the 1820s. Crews line-up their boats along the river and, at the firing of a small canon, chase and ‘bump’ the boat in front before they are bumped by the boat behind. A real spectacle, crowds line the banks of the river between the starting point at Baits Bite lock, Milton, to the finish at Chesterton. The University Bumps take place during the Lent Term and in June - and the Town Bumps in summer. A more tranquil setting can be found at the University Botanic Garden, a 40-acre oasis of beautifully landscaped grounds and glasshouses that showcase a huge diversity of plants, trees and bird life. A pleasure to visit all year round, there are trails to follow, events to enjoy, free Young Explorers backpacks for children and a new Garden Café serving fresh, locally sourced food. Away from the city there is much to explore and enjoy. See the splendid houses and gardens at nearby Wimpole Hall, Audley End House and Anglesey Abbey where the drifts of snowdrops are a memorable sight. Discover a carpet of spring bluebells at Brampton Woods, an ancient woodland, near Huntingdon, and spot the wonder of wildlife at the nature reserves at Fen Drayton Lakes, Wicken Fen and Wandlebury Country Park. There’s no shortage of fun activities from stand-up paddleboarding on the Great Ouse, Ely; taking to the air in a vintage Tiger Moth, Dragon Rapide or Harvard Warbird at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford; or kayaking the River Cam. Cambridge and Cambridgeshire is waiting to welcome you.

Step away from the city centre and soft meadows and sleepy villages beckon. Follow the river Cam upstream as it meanders through grassy fields to the Orchard Tea Garden at Grantchester, the picture-perfect English village which poet Rupert Brooke famously celebrated in his 1912 poem The Old Vicarage, Grantchester. Relax in a chair under the canopy of blossoming fruit trees where Wittgenstein, Forster and Woolf have all taken tea. Explore further afield and find more historical treasure. The splendid National Trust property, Wimpole Estate, combines the oldest country house in Cambridgeshire with restored Victorian Parterre and pleasure grounds; the English Heritage property, Audley End House, considered one of England’s grandest stately homes complete with a working organic kitchen garden and Anglesey Abbey with its elegant gardens and breathtaking snowdrop-lined Winter Walk. Head across the Fens to the city of Ely to see the Ship of the Fens, Ely Cathedral, a sight to behold, its architectural glory soaring high into the huge Fenland sky.

SO MUCH TO DO There’s something for everyone when it comes to entertainment in Cambridge. A choice of galleries showcase an impressive range of art, from the contemporary to the classic; a buzzing theatre and performance scene presents drama, dance and family shows; and you can enjoy all kinds of live music from internationally acclaimed orchestras and ensembles to touring pop stars, pub gigs, the world-famous Folk Festival, the family-friendly Big Weekend and magical Secret Garden Party festivals. King’s College Chapel is celebrated for its choral services including the famous A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, which is open to the public and attracts queues from early morning, before it is broadcast live by the BBC to the nation and across the globe on Christmas Eve. Concerts at King’s is an annual series of recitals organised by King’s Director of Music, Stephen Cleobury, featuring various ensembles and orchestras. If you have a chance to hear the sublime Choir of King’s College, you will be enchanted. As well as the free-to-enter University of Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum, which houses world-class collections of art and antiquities spanning centuries and civilisations, and Kettle’s Yard, one of the country’s finest galleries and a major centre for 20th century and contemporary art, visitors will find a wide range of artworks to appreciate. The Arts Quarter offers a treasure trove of contemporary art, craft and jewellery in its various galleries; whilst the Cambridge Art Movement exhibits work by leading artists in modern surroundings. In addition New Hall Art Collection, at Murray Edwards College and Ruskin Gallery at Anglia Ruskin University, both boast stunning collections of modern and contemporary art. Take a tour of King’s College Chapel and feast your eyes on Rubens’ masterpiece, The Adoration of the Magi. Set in 11 acres of rural Cambridgeshire, near the village of Bourn, is the visual arts research and development hub, Wysing Arts Centre, home to artists in residence and an eclectic programme of exhibitions and events for all the family. Theatre lovers will not be disappointed with the range of performances on offer, from student theatre to touring and West End shows. The Corn Exchange features a choice of entertainment, from comedy and music to ballet and classical concerts, and Cambridge Arts Theatre is a lively regional theatre hosting a varied programme. Just a mile out of the city centre, The Junction also has a regular line up of famous names and boasts a packed programme of club nights, comedy, theatre and dance performances. Cambridge has been the stomping ground of many now-famous actors, presenters and comedians, including Stephen Fry, John Cleese, Sue Perkins, Robert Webb and Emma Thompson, who cut their theatrical teeth performing as part of the renowned Cambridge Footlights comedy troupe, based at the ADC Theatre.

The city’s Arts Picturehouse hosts the Cambridge Film Festival every September, showing an imaginative mix of films, shorts, documentaries and a children’s film festival, plus the chance to follow the River Cam up to Grantchester Meadows to enjoy open-air cinema under the stars. Spot literary luminaries every spring and winter when the city’s own literary festival Wordfest presents a programme of lively and friendly events across all genres for the entire family. Festival fans will be busy all summer. Saffron Walden is a Medieval, rural market town of great charm, just 15 miles to the south of Cambridge, easily reached by car or public transport. Audley End House, one of the finest Jacobean Mansions in the country and winner of the Best Large Attraction in the 2011 Essex Tourism Awards, is situated 1 mile from Saffron Walden. A market has been held here since 1141, market days are now Tuesdays and Saturdays. Beyond the market place, there are many independent shops and eating places to choose from. At the heart of the town lies St Mary’s Church.

Located only 15 miles from Cambridge, Ely is a perfect one-day or short break destination. The first port of call for any visitor is the cathedral. St Ives is a wonderful riverside town, tourist centre and thriving residential community. Located just off the A14, 6 miles from Huntingdon and 12miles from Cambridge on the banks of the river Great Ouse. The Guided Busway provides a trouble free, easy access route from Cambridge with buses running on a regular basis.

Its shopping centre has a good mix of independent traders and multinationals. The original character is retained with regular markets held every Monday and Friday with Bank Holiday markets being very popular. On the first and third Saturdays of each month an excellent Farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Market takes place.

The town has been a place of importance through the centuries with its Easter fair one of the busiest in England drawing crowds from all over Europe during the 1100s. Indeed it was its markets and fairs that led to the founding of St. Ives. In the 17th Century it was the home of Oliver Cromwell.

A focal point is the splendid 15th Century Bridge and chapel over the river and is one of only three such surviving bridges in England. The Norris Museum houses a collection of books, manuscripts and objects relating to the history of Huntingdonshire bequeathed to the town by Herbert Norris on his death in 1931. » How to Get Here By Train There is a fast and frequent rail service from London King’s Cross & London Liverpool Street through to Cambridge. There are excellent connections from Scotland & the North via Peterborough, and regional services from Birmingham & the Midlands, East Anglia & the Northwest. For bus services from Cambridge railway station into the city centre look for the Citi 1, Citi 3 or Citi 7 services. Access for all Shopmobility Cambridge offers you two Shopmobility centres to help you make your shopping visit to the city as easy and enjoyable as possible. Shopmobility is a scheme to provide electrically powered scooters, wheelchairs and manual wheelchairs to help people who have limited mobility – through permanent or temporary disablement, illness, accident or age – to shop and use the other facilities within Cambridge. There are two Shopmobility offices in Cambridge: On the ground floor of the Grand Arcade car park, first right at the entrance. The site provides easy access to the city centre, Grand Arcade and John Lewis On the fourth floor of the Grafton East car park, entrance on East Road. The site provides easy access to the Grafton Centre, Fitzroy and Burleigh Street Both Shopmobility offices are open Monday to Saturday, 10am – 4pm. The Grafton office is open Sundays, 11am – 4pm. If you are arriving by bus, park and ride or taxi, we can meet customers from the bus station and bus stops.
