WELCOME FAMILIES TO CAMBRIDGE

Welcome to

Cambridge has the edge when it comes to beauty, history and culture. This elegant yet compact city boasts spectacular architecture in the shape of colleges, chapels, churches and courtyards Emma Thornton combined with green parks, wide open CEO, Visit Cambridge & Beyond spaces and the River Cam, which winds through its heart. Home to the prestigious University of Cambridge and its 31 Colleges, you can shop within sight of the magnificent turrets of King’s College Chapel, see wisteria that would rival Kew Gardens, climbing the walls of Jesus College, sit in the pub where Crick and Watson sketched the structure of DNA and marvel at the beauty of the world famous college ‘Backs’ whilst enjoying the quintessentially English pastime of punting. Culture abounds in the shape of museums, galleries, theatres, art centres and festivals, with programmes to stimulate, inspire and entertain. Further afield you will discover some of the region’s leading attractions and stately homes along with picture-perfect towns and villages nestled in rolling green countryside. Shopping here is a delight - with its unrivalled mix of elegant cobbled streets and crescents, quality and quirky independent shops, friendly markets and chic shopping centres. Cambridge and the surrounding area has something for everyone, a family-friendly destination with places to go and things to do and see all year round and 2016 is no exception! Join us to celebrate the bicentenary of the magnificent Fitzwilliam Museum, opened in 1816 it was described by the Standing Commission on Museums & Galleries in 1968 as “one of the greatest art collections of the nation and a monument of the first importance” and is now one of the city’s leading attractions and most iconic buildings. After two years of redevelopment, the National Horseracing Museum is completing it’s exciting move to Palace House, the location of the new National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art. The centre will include a new museum that celebrates the history and science of horseracing, a national gallery of British sporting art and the opportunity to see thoroughbred horses as part of the visitor experience. For Food lovers, don’t miss Eat Cambridge in May, a fantastic two week programme of food and drink events, interactive talks, workshops, and special one-offs that showcase the city and surrounding area’s amazing independent food and drink scene. We are here to help make your stay memorable – for Official Guided Tours, accommodation bookings and advice, discounted punting tickets and more, contact the Visit Cambridge & Beyond team on 01223 791500, visit us online or at the Cambridge Visitor Information Centre. We look forward to welcoming you.

PUNTING Adventures

GRANTCHESTER Boating activities are an essential part of the Cambridge experience. Many famous students have taken Scudamore’s boats towards Grantchester to explore the scenic upper river and visit the rural haunts of Lord Byron and Rupert Brooke.

Jack Scudamore founded pleasure-punting in Cambridge, ensuring his place in history. By 1920 punting had become the number one boating activity on The River Cam. To this day, Scudamore’s Punting is globally recognised as synonymous with Cambridge. Punting continues to be the must-do activity when visiting the city.

“There is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” KENNETH GRAHAME The Wind in the Willows

Whisk your friends and family on adventures to follow in the footsteps of Cambridge’s famous. Hire your own Canadian canoe, kayaks or punt. Head to Grantchester with your own picnic. Alternatively stop for lunch at the Red Lion or treat yourself to a cream tea at The Orchard Tea Garden.
