While there, jump on the Old Abe State Trail for a picturesque ride on the newly repaved 19.5 mile trail. Stand on the spot that’s half-way between the North Pole and the equator with a visit to the Lion’s Park in Cadott; while there visit the Veteran’s tribute off Hwy 29.

The Village of Boyd-nicknamed “The Friendly Town”- is nestled among the farms and woodlots in the gently rolling hills along State Highway 29, east of Chippewa Falls. The many local businesses meet the needs of area residents and visitors. The community also features Lotz Park, with a lighted ball diamond, volleyball and tennis courts, pavilions and play areas. Historic St. Joseph’s Church, built in 1928, has spectacular German stained glass windows. Its prominent twin steeples have become a landmark. Boyd’s 680 residents invite everyone to the community’s Ringelspiel Days Festival on Memorial Day weekend with sports tournaments, a carnival, parade, and live music. Late August, the village hosts an event with an outdoor dance and free sweet corn. In early December, Boyd hosts a pancake breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus, horse-drawn wagon rides and skating.
Cadott, “half way between the Equator and the North Pole,” is in the heart of Wisconsin’s Vacation Crossroads. Located at the junctions of State Highways 27 and 29, at the west end of the Partner 29 corridor along the Old Yellowstone Trail. Cadott was named after Jean Baptiste Cadotte, the son of a fur trader who established a fur trading post here in the early 1800’s. The first permanent settler was Robert Marriner who built a log cabin and sawmill in 1865, beginning the lumbering and mill industries which served as the foundation of Cadott’s first growth. Today you will find a wide variety of places to visit, including Riverview Park which has interpretive signs providing an insight into the unique rock formations along the Yellow River, the Cadott Area Historical Museum and Baker School, the ZCBJ Lodge Hall and Bohemian Cemetery which are listed on the State and National Registries of Historic Places, the Wisconsin Veterans Tribute, good restaurants, a cheese house, a motel and businesses along Main Street.

Cornell
Nestled on the banks of the scenic Chippewa River off of Hwy 178, the City of Cornell is a center for area history and year-round recreation. The city has the only remaining pulpwood stacker, located in the Mill Yard Park, site of the Cornell Visitors Center and Native American Museum (open May through October). Cornell is also a trailhead for the 20-mile Old Abe State Trail for biking, walking, snowmobiling, and horseback riding. Brunet Island State Park offers camping and other outdoor recreation. Cornell also has links to Wisconsin’s extensive snowmobile trail network. Cornell is home to several community festivals throughout the year: fireworks on July 3, a car show, Chippewa River Rendezvous, and an annual craft and art fair.

Spring and summer is the time for fishing and recreation on the Lake Holcombe Flowage (approximately 3,600 acres, with 120 miles of shoreline). Perched on the banks of the scenic Chippewa River, Jim Falls offers a small-town feel full of local history and year-round outdoor recreational activities. The Old Abe State Trail can be accessed in Jim Falls, welcoming bikers, snowmobilers, horseback riders, and hikers. Xcel Energy’s Jim Falls Hydropower Plant is the largest hydropower producing facility in the Midwest. Boat access to the Old Abe Flowage and the upper end of Lake Wissota provides excellent angling opportunities for walleye, muskie, small-mouth bass, and catfish. The Old Abe War Eagle memorial statue commemorates Wisconsin’s feathered Civil War hero. The Chippewa River along Highway 178 just north of Jim Falls offers a view of the original river channel, a hiking trail with spectacular displays of spring wildflowers, an area of study for geology students, scheduled flow releases for kayakers, and an opportunity to view Wisconsin’s living fossil, the lake sturgeon.

Resorts, campgrounds, restaurants, and services are available. Visitors also come to see the Chippewa Moraine State Recreation Area, with its more than 3,300 acres of ridges and lakes carved by the glacier. A Visitors Center provides information on the stagnant ice glacial features that dominate the landscape and offers access to the thousand-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail, whether for long-distance hiking or a 4.5-mile walk around the lake-studded Circle Trail. The adjacent Chippewa County Forest provides hunting, hiking, fishing, and snowmobile opportunities. New Auburn is the setting for the best sellers, Population 485, Meeting Your Neighbor One Siren at a Time and Visiting Tom, written by author Michael Perry, who describes life in this small town and has inspired visitors to come see the landmarks that play a role in his books.
Stanley
1-715-644-5758 • www.stanleywisconsin.us Stanley is experiencing a “Rural Renaissance.” The city is home to Ace Ethanol, Wisconsin’s first large-scale producer of ethanol, and the Stanley Correctional Institution, a medium security facility housing 1500 inmates and employing 405. The community is known for Chapman Park, with its annual rodeo, modern campgrounds, elk park, ball fields, volleyball, tennis and basketball courts. A recent addition to the community is the Veterans Memorial Park located in downtown Stanley. Otter Lake recreation area is seven miles north of Stanley and is just one of the areas offering fishing and hunting opportunities and recreational trails. The Stanley Area Historical Society Museum draws visitors from near and far. The community has a pool and fitness center at the high school. Stanley has a motel on the county snowmobile trail and is also close to unique downtown stores, restaurants, businesses and professional services ready to meet the needs of residents and visitors.

Lake Wissota State Park, 9 miles Northeast of Chippewa Falls, includes more than 1,000 acres of forests and open prairie bordering a 6,300 acre lake. Boating, canoeing, swimming, water-skiing, and the miles of trails are popular during the warmer months, and ice fishing, snowmobiling and crosscountry skiing in the winter. The Old Abe Bike trail, accessed at the junction of County Highways O and S, follows the Chippewa River between the park and Brunet Island State Park near Cornell, passing through agricultural and undeveloped lands.
Lake Wissota
The town of Lafayette borders Lake Wissota. The township maintains a boat landing on the lake and is the home of Skydive Wissota, an over 45 year-old club has trained instructors to help people experience the adventure of skydiving.
1-866-723-0331 • www.chippewacounty.com The village of Lake Hallie, County Highway OO and State Highway 53, began in Wisconsin’s logging era. In the 1870’s, the community of Badger Mills formed adjacent to the Chippewa River and Lake Hallie. Lake Hallie, an oxbow of the Chippewa River, was named after the daughter of the lumber mill president. The lake was used as a holding pond for logs. When the logging boom ended, the lake became a recreational center. Today Lake Hallie provides excellent fishing throughout the year. Anglers and canoeists can enjoy a leisurely float down the Chippewa River from Chippewa Falls to the boat ramp across from Lake Hallie. An 18-hole golf course lies on the shore of Lake Hallie and the banks of the Chippewa River. Hallie Youth Days provides opportunities for young softball and baseball players to display their talents. INDOOR RECREATION
The Yellowstone Trail was the first transcontinental automobile highway in the United States. In 1912 it began as an effort to provide good roads from South Dakota to the great tourist attraction, the Yellowstone Park. It soon expanded to become a road running through all of the 13 northern tier states, “from Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts to Puget Sound on the Pacific Ocean.” The trail was marked by bright yellow markers with a black arrow. The Yellowstone Trail attracted so many visitors that when the highway department numbered state roads in 1918, the Yellowstone Trail and its yellow road markers were allowed to remain. Today, thanks to the efforts of Chippewa County and the Chippewa County Historical Society Historic Marker Committee, the same Yellowstone Trail logo signs point the way through Chippewa County. CORNELL, WIS. is a historic paper-mill town which hosts the only known pulpwood stacker in the world. It was used in Cornell from 1912 until 1972. It now stands as a monument to the logging industry that laid the foundation for the entire Chippewa Valley. The Cornell Visitors’ Center, located under the stacker in the Mill Yard Park, displays many artifacts from the logging era. Next door you can visit the Native American Museum with more artifacts and history.

BRUNET ISLAND STATE PARK offers 1,032 acres of wooded wonderland near the confluence of the Fisher and Chippewa rivers. The park is filled with whitetailed deer, raccoon and a host of other wildlife to entertain you. Trailhead for the Old Abe State Trail The OLD ABE STATE TRAIL connects Brunet Island State Park with Lake Wissota State Park in Chippewa Falls. The trail provides a variety of uses including biking, snowmobiling, rollerblading and hiking.

STATE PARKS Brunet Island State Park 69 campsites are available as well as showers, picnic areas, playground, athletic field, swimming beach, cross-country ski trails, hiking and biking trails. This park is connected to the Old Abe State Trail via a one-mile bike trail link. 23125 255th St., Cornell. 715-239-6888 Chippewa Moraine State Recreation Area This is one of nine units of the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve. Includes a visitors center, Ice Age National Scenic Trail, primitive camping, lake access and more. In 2012, the state of Wisconsin purchased a more than 500 acre addition that will provide a unique mixture of opportunities for environmental education, scientific research, and recreational prospects. Lakes & Streams Chippewa County has 449 lakes totaling 20,027 acres and ranging from one to 6,300 acres. Lake Wissota, the largest lake, is an impoundment of the Chippewa River east of Chippewa Falls. Although many of the smaller lakes do not support much of a fishery, they offer solitude and serenity for those wanting to get away. Thirty-eight lakes have developed public access and most are listed in the table on the opposite page. Many lakes provide excellent angling opportunities. The Chippewa River and its flowage offer some of the best and diverse angling opportunities in the county. Chippewa County also provides 81 miles of trout fishing opportunities in 24 classified trout streams. Seventy-seven miles of these streams are Class 1 trout water. Historical Markers BLOOMER First Congregational ChurchUnited Church of Christ (11) 15th Avenue This congregation was organized in 1868 in Vanville, later renamed Bloomer.
Cook-Rutledge Mansion (14) 505 West Grand Avenue The historical home of lumber baron Edward Rutledge and his wife, Hannah, was built in 1874. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
BOYD Edson Union Cemetery (36) South of Boyd on CTH D Civil War veterans and victims of the 1880 diphtheria epidemic are buried here. In 1887 the cemetery was dedicated by Edson Chubb.
Chippewa Springs (15) 600 East Park Avenue Pure spring water was discovered here by a French explorer in 1700. It was protected by a Spring House in 1893, complete with a glass floor.
CADOTT Cadott Hub & Spoke Factory (33) STH 27 Captain Ellery Clark moved this company from DePere to Cadott in 1880. It operated for 18 years. CHIPPEWA FALLS First Presbyterian Church (1) 130 West Central Street This is the oldest Protestant church in the city of Chippewa Falls, organized in 1855. Notre Dame Church (2) Allen and High Streets Chippewa County’s first church, the mother church of all area Catholic churches. Trinity United Methodist Church (5) 201 West Central Street As early as 1846, Methodists were meeting in Chippewa Falls. In 1892 they built the present red brick building. Marsh Rainbow Arch Bridge (9) Spring Street and Rushman Drive Architecturally significant, this is the only Duncan Creek bridge that survived the destructive flood of 1934. Federal Building and Early Mail Service (10) 315 North Bridge Street By the year 1855, mail arrived by “pony express,” and two years later a bi-weekly stage line was established.

Mason Shoe Company Factory (16) Rushman Drive and Columbia Street This site originally held the 1870s Hiram S. Allen gristmill. The mill was torn down and its foundation rock used to build the foundation of the new Mason Shoe Factory. Chippewa Lumber & Boom Sawmill (18) Along the bike trail off Court Street Organized in 1857, the sawmill grew by 1869 to be the biggest sawmill in the world under one roof. The Old Sawdust Pile (19) Timber Terrace Golf Course, 1117 Pumphouse Road This sawdust deposit is from the biggest sawmill in the world under one roof. Irvine Park Cave (20) Irvine Park The cave and seven acres of land were purchased in 1871 for the storage of beer for Schmitmayer’s Brewery. Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company (21) 1 Jefferson Avenue Chippewa Falls’ oldest industry was established in 1867 by Jacob Leinenkugel. He called it the “Spring Brewery.” Chippewa Valley Electric Railroad (22) Irvine Park The line, built in 1897, operated for 28 years, running from downtown Eau Claire to Chippewa Falls. The waiting shelter is still in the park.

The Chippewa County Historical Society Historic Marker Committee creates and maintains these historical markers and has continued to do so since 1973. William Irvine (23) Irvine Park In 1906, William Irvine and L.C. Stanley donated 163 acres of land to the people of Chippewa Falls.
Hiram Stores Allen (28) Allen Park (South Bridge Street) Hiram Stores Allen built the first gristmill, the first flour-mill, and the first hotel in Chippewa Falls.
Pioneer Norwegian Log Home (24) Irvine Park This log house was built by Norwegian immigrant Ole Pederson Bjerke around 1881.
Rev. Charles F.X. Goldsmith (29) Allen and High Streets Goldsmith’s first big work in Chippewa Falls was the construction of the Notre Dame Catholic Church. His body lies in a crypt under the church altar.
Hannah M. Rutledge Home (25) 300 Bridgewater Avenue The Rutledge Home was built by Edward Rutledge in memory of his wife Hannah. It still operates as a nursing home.
Oldest Commercial Building in the City of Chippewa Falls (37) 29 West Spring Street Built in 1859, this is the oldest commercial building still standing Edward Rutledge Charity (26) in Chippewa Falls, originally used 404 N. Bridge Street Built in 1917 in memory of Edward as a saloon and boarding house. Rutledge to help people in need Site of the Hiram S. Allen Home and to assist charitable (38) organizations. 44 E. Columbia Street The Norway House and Birthplace This site was the location of the ornate pioneer mansion built by of Alexander Wiley (27) Hiram Allen. It was frequented by 10 Block W. Grand Avenue the Chippewa Indians in the 1800s. Built in 1871 as a rooming house but no longer in existence, the Norway House was the birthplace of Alexander Wiley, Jr. who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1939.
Sunny Valley School (39) Irvine Park The one-room schoolhouse was built in 1903 and later donated to the City of Chippewa Falls for display in Irvine Park.
Chippewa Sugar Beet Factory (43) River Street and Water Department This is the site of a huge six-story sugar beet factory constructed in 1904. Yellowstone Trail (45) Park Avenue & Hwy 124 This trail, established in 1916 in Wisconsin as a transcontinental road, was one of the nation’s first automobile trails. Old McDonell High School/ CVCA (46) 3 South High Street Built in 1907 as a Catholic school, this building now serves as the Heyde Center for the Arts. Pig Alley (47) Bike Trail at Duncan Creek A grazing area for pigs and other livestock of the Leinenkugel family during the 1800’s. Now part of the Duncan Creek Parkway Trail. Irvine Park Drive Bridge (48) Irvine Park The Milwaukee Bridge & Iron Co. fabricated the bridge in 1907. It originally crossed Duncan Creek on Grand Ave. before it was moved to its current location in 1935. The bridge was replaced in 2004. Bear Den Drive Bridge (49) Irvine Park The Milwaukee Bridge & Iron Co. fabricated the bridge and it was moved to this site in 1940. The bridge was replaced in 2004. Poor Farm Cemetery (50) CTH I The County of Chippewa, through its local legislative body, decided in 1894 to build a county asylum. Sokup’s Market (51) 624 N. Bridge Street Joseph Sokup opened Sokup’s Market around 1891. The fourth generation owner, Peter Sokup, continues to operate at the same location. Chippewa Canning Company (52) 800 Block of East Elm Street The Chippewa Canning Company operated for several decades on the East hill of Chippewa Falls. The building was torn down in 1967.
Spring Brook Footbridge (53) Irvine Park The original footbridge spanned the Spring Brook during the early 1900’s. The new bridge was constructed in 2010 to resemble the earlier structure. Central Lutheran Church (54) 28 E. Columbia Street Organized in 1870 as the Norwegian Lutheran Church. Woolen Mill (55) 124 E. Elm Street Operating from 1882 to 1962, supplying the lumber trade with warm & dependable clothing. CORNELL Pulpwood Stacker (40) Mill Yard Park Measuring 175 feet high, the Stacker is the last of its kind still standing in the world and is listed in the State and National Register of Historic Places. Jean Brunet (41) Mill Yard Park Jean Brunet was born in France and moved to Chippewa Falls in 1828. He built the first dams on the Chippewa River. Ezra Cornell (42) City Park Ezra Cornell founded the city of Cornell and Cornell University in Ithica, New York. EAGLE POINT TOWNSHIP Chippewa City (7) East of Highway 178 at O’Neil Creek Chippewa City as platted in 1856 had a church, school, bank, post office and saloons. It diminished as the logging industry developed six miles south in Chippewa Falls. Stanley’s Mill (8) 135th Avenue at O’Neil Creek This is the former site of a dam, a gristmill and electrical power plant destroyed by a major flood of O’Neil Creek in 1934. HOLCOMBE The Holcombe Indian (3) Holcombe Town Hall Park An eight-foot carved wooden Indian, which was the guardian spirit of loggers, stands here.
Holcombe Logging Disaster (4) Holcombe Town Hall Park In 1905, eleven men drowned and five men miraculously survived when attempting to break a log jam. LAKE HALLIE Badger-Blue Mills (44) Lake Hallie Park Lake Hallie was created in 1843 as a holding pond for the Blue Mills. The first dam was destroyed in 1867 and replaced by a larger one. NEW AUBURN Cartwright Mill (6) Elm Street at New Auburn Fire Station The original sawmill, named the Cartwright Mill, was founded in 1875 by David J. and Paul W. Cartwright. STANLEY The Yellowstone Trail (12) Downtown Stanley along 1st Ave. Established in 1916 in Wisconsin as a transcontinental road, it was one of the nation’s first automobile trails. The Stanley, Merrill and Phillips Railroad (13) Downtown Stanley along 1st Ave. This railroad was chartered in 1893 to bring logs to the mill. Russian Orthodox Church (35) North of Stanley Built in 1906, St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church is the oldest Orthodox Church building in Wisconsin.
TOWNSHIP OF ARTHUR Bohemian National Cemetery (31) 13875 STH 27 The original records of this cemetery, written in Czech, reflect the nationality of the people who settled this area. Western Bohemian Hall (32) STH 27 and 135th Avenue The ZCBJ Hall was built in 1907 by Czech immigrants who came to this area. It continues to be a bonding social center. James A. Bate Home (34) ¾ mile west of STH 27 on CTH S Bate was the first Fire Chief for the city of Chippewa Falls.
