ALL AROUND CYPRUS THU 16 – SUN, 26 FEB

CARNIVAL Carnival in Cyprus may be traced back to classical antiquity and the festival of ‘Dionysia’, in honour of Dionysus, God of the Grape Harvest, Winemaking and Wine. The main events included a pompe procession, contests of dancing and singing, and the performance of Greek tragedies, including those of Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles. The carnival feast continued in different forms during the Middle Ages, the periods of the Venetian, Frankish and Ottoman rule, as well as during the period of the British rule and over the years it moved away from the aristocratic halls and came out to the streets, squares and taverns, turning the carnival into a crowded public feast all over the island. Particularly in Lemesos, Carnival has taken a form of artistic expression and elegance; more than 12,000 people take part in the parades, with extravagant floats, serenaders, ‘mandolinatas’ and choirs, while thousands of people gather from all over Cyprus and abroad in order to enjoy and take part in the celebration. In the World of J. Brahms Johannes Brahms is considered by his contemporaries and later writers as both a traditionalist and an innovator: his music is firmly rooted in the structures and compositional techniques of the Classical masters, even though within these structures is embedded a highly romantic nature, with the diligent nature of his works forming an inspiration for many subsequent

composers. An exceptional pianist, he premiered many of his own works, while he also worked with some of the leading performers of his time, including virtuoso violinist Joseph Joachim, with whom he enjoyed a close friendship. It’s no surprise then that this concert features one of his many waltzes for piano (arranged for orchestra by maestro Baltas), as well as his Double Concerto for violin and cello and, to round the evening off, one of early works, the Serenade no. 1 in D major. The General Secretary The General Secretary is one of the most important examples of modern Greek drama. Director Vassilis Nikolaides notes: "How can a work written at the end of the 19th century and following the fashions of the time be presented and remain relevant to a contemporary audience in 2016? A work that is definitive and a socio-political musical satire about everything that was wrong in a Greece on the threshold of the 20th century?" But, the value of a play like The General Secretary lies exactly in the depth of its characters and situations. It is found in the irony with which the writer “views” his time and the way he criticizes the Greeks of “yesterday” which are also unfortunately the Greeks of “today”. Seven Stories. Lace and Modern Art

Scala – Its Craftsmen

The exhibition features Athienou’s unique lace crafts and their status as ‘intangible heritage’. Described as “seven works of modern art listen to seven testimonials on Venis and Athienou needle lace”, the exhibition revolves around oral testimonies of the history of lace making in the large village community, which have then been interpreted into modern art by various participating artists. The lace techniques of ‘Venis’ lace (‘Pittotes’) and Athienou lace (‘Oloplouma’) differ from Lefkara lace linens (‘Lefkaritika’) in their designs, whilst Oloplouma are made entirely out of lace without linen cloth. The lace is included in the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Cyprus Register, which confirms its traditional significance. The purpose of the exhibition is to fill the gap in the written account of this tradition; to revitalise the memories of the village during this era, and to introduce the younger generation to this significant piece of the village’s history, which is not widely known. Venue: Kallinikeio Municipal Museum of Athienou (2, Archbishop Makarios III Ave., CY-7600 Athienou Village, T. +357 24524002, athienoumuseum.org.cy) Opening time: Mon – Fri 08:00 - 15:00 (except public holidays), and with prior notice on weekends.
