Musical Synergies, Cyprus – Russia A concert with one of the many waltzes by Chopin, as well as his Piano concerto no.2, the first one he wrote, in 1830, which abounds with sensual ornamentation, bewitching harmonies, and unmistakable references to Polish folk music. As for Shchedrin’s Carmen suite, this came into existence in a rather roundabout fashion, after the composer was asked for a new ballet featuring Prosper Mérimée’s fiery heroine. Shchedrin however found it impossible to think of the story without Bizet’s famous tunes going through his head, so in the end

he decided to exploit the original opera, describing the process as “a creative meeting of minds”. But this was the Soviet Union in the late 60’s, and after the first performance it was banned by the authorities as “insulting to Bizet’s masterpiece”. It took Shostakovich’s intervention to get the ballet back on the approved list, and it’s since become Shchedrin’s best-known work. Beethoven: Complete works for violoncello and piano - Part II Péter Somodari | violoncello Nicolas Costantinou | piano The composition of sonatas for piano and cello was unthinkable before Beethoven; up until then, the cello would mainly provide the bass line. Moreover, this particular combination posed various difficulties as the piano would often outweigh the low notes of the cello and balance between the two instruments is always precarious. Beethoven was the first composer to tackle these challenges (his example was not followed until 1824). The works for piano and cello are representative of the three periods of Beethoven’s artistic creation: the 'classical' (WoO 45, 46, opp. 5, 66), the 'heroic' (op. 69) and the 'late' (op. 102). Inspired by the unmatched capabilities of various renowned cellists and his own abilities as a virtuoso pianist, the sonatas not only represented an example par excellence for the subsequent generation of composers, but they also pose tremendous challenges for cellists and pianists alike. “Amathous of Cyprus, a city most ancient”

ΤΗΕ ΜET LIVE IN HD

Amathous is one of the most interesting citykingdoms of ancient Cyprus. On the occasion of 40 years of excavations (1975–2015) of the French Archaeological Mission of Amathous, the Department of Antiquities in collaboration with the French School at Athens, is organizing this exhibition. The exhibition covers a large chronological period, from prehistory to the first centuries of the Christian period. The exhibits are presented in four different thematic entities, which narrate the history of the city and the region of Amathous by providing information on public and private life, rituals, burial customs and commercial or cultural exchanges. The exhibition includes a brief reference to legends and traditions and the fact that the inhabitants of Lemesos, at least from the medieval period until today, refer to Amathous as “Palia Lemesos”, thus keeping alive the memory of the important city of ancient Cyprus, which was in fact the predecessor of the modern city of Limassol.
