Art In Public Places Edmond’s public art program has helped fill the city with a sense of community and culture. The Edmond Visual Arts Commission is responsible for all of the public art around the city, and is in charge of expanding the art collection, promoting the public art program, and maintaining the pieces. These pieces are funded in one of three ways: Donations, public/private partnerships, and CIP 1% set-aside funds. The public art program began in 2002, with 14 pieces in the inventory. Now, there are over 200 pieces, with the 200th being installed in June of 2018. Within this collection, there are many installations from Oklahoma natives, and some from artists who are known and admired throughout the world. The City’s art program has created a great attraction for tourists and given Edmond residents something to be proud of.
Mural Art Tour This self-guided tour takes you on a journey of color and imagination. Over ten murals are featured on this excursion, each one bringing a sense of beauty and culture to the city. Some of these paintings may seem deeper than others outwardly, but they all have a phenomenal story. Every mural on this tour also gives a magnificent photo opportunity for each participant.
1
Tropical Oasis Brooke Rowlands
“Tropical Oasis” by Brooke Rowlands is a colorful mural that is displayed on the northern outside wall of Edmond’s Sunnyside Diner. The restaurant partnered with the Edmond Visual Arts Commission to obtain this piece. It was painted in August 2019. The mastermind behind “Tropical Oasis,” Brooke Rowlands, is a New Jersey native who has resided in Oklahoma for over a decade. This self-taught artist has several nationally featured works and has even gotten recognition on television. She uses stunning detail to create her vivid works, often times including florals. Brooke is inspired by the events and emotions of each day when working on her art, leaving us with a unique work of art that is unmatched anywhere else.
2
Blocworks Mural Jason Pawley
“Blocworks Mural” by Jason Pawley is a breathtaking installation on the east side of the Blocworks building. This piece is bright and rich, but at the same time, it is natural and warm. It was paid for in partnership with the Blocworks Bouldering Gym. Since 2019, this mural has captured attention of many people around Edmond. Jason Pawley’s work has also captured attention all across the state. He has several recognizable scenes across the state. In downtown Oklahoma City, his murals featured on several underpasses bring joy to many passersby. His works across the state, including in Edmond, are the subject of many conversations.

Railyard Mural Kristopher Kanaly
“Railyard Mural” by Kristopher Kanaly is a beloved art installation located on the west side of the Edmond Railyard. It was sponsored by Block 1 Partners, LLC in partnership with the Edmond Visual Arts Commission. This mural was completed in June 2019 using spray-paint, which was done by hand, without guides. The artist, Kristopher Kanaly, specializes in creating ultra-flat renditions of landscapes and otherworldly themes. This mural in particular features iconic Oklahoma attractions including the Round Barn, Arcadia Lake, the Armory, and more. When looking at the mural, be sure to try to find all of the Oklahoma elements, as well as some fun additions such as a pineapple. Another fun inclusion to this piece that you should look out for is the train, on which one of the cars was tagged by one of Kristopher Kanaly’s friends.
4
Psyche Chris Cargill
“Psyche” by Chris Cargill is one of those paintings that gets people talking. The placement of monochrome next to radiant colors is exciting to both the eye and the mind. This mural was paid for by the Dean Lively Gallery and made its appearance in Edmond in November 2018. The artist, Chris Cargill, is an amazing muralist. He dedicates an incredible amount of time and effort into each one of his pieces and gets his inspiration from his surroundings. In a quote from his website, he says: “Having lived in Oklahoma for most of my life, I have been inspired by the history, landscapes, and urban design of the 46th state. From the stories of the Native Americans to the ‘newspaper of the street,’ my art is born to continue their dialogue.”
5
Historic Edmond Mural Dr. Bob Palmer
“Historic Edmond Mural” by Dr. Bob Palmer is a treasure that helps represent many key components of the city. It is one of many murals that have been painted by Dr. Palmer in Edmond and across the world. He has created over 3,500 murals in the past 30 years, most of which are historical. When talking about his influences from history, Dr. Palmer said, “History isn’t always pretty, but it’s a part of who we are.” The “Historic Edmond Mural” is located off of Broadway and Main Street and was painted in 2008. It was paid for in partnership with the Downtown Edmond Business Association.

Buffalo Off Broadway Zonly Looman and Studio Z
“Buffalo Off Broadway by Zonly Looman and Studio Z is a vibrant depiction of the Oklahoma state animal. It is one of several incredible art pieces by this artist to be displayed in the city of Edmond. It was completed in 2017 and was sponsored by Frederick Berg with the Edmond Visual Arts Commission. This mural makes use of gorgeous warm tones along with bright blues to create a visual masterpiece. The artist, Zonly Looman, is a primarily self-taught artist who has spent countless hours perfecting his craft. He is influenced heavily by his Kumeyaay and Chumash background which has helped him create his incredible art.

Herd Off Hurd Zonly Looman and Studio Z
“Herd Off Hurd” by Zonly Looman and Studio Z sits right next to its sister mural, “Buffalo Off Broadway.” These dazzling paintings are some of the most phenomenal pieces in the state. “Herd Off Herd” was purchased in 2017 in partnership with Frederick Berg Canvas provided by the Zahrai Family. Zonly Looman was given artistic influence by his grandmothers, and had support from his grandfather, who watched him paint “Buffalo Off Broadway.” His grandfather was an advocate for painting the entire back wall of the building, which is where “Herd Off Hurd” sits now. Although his grandfather was unable to see the finished product, this mural has made the entire city of Edmond beam with pride.

Early Edmond Banking Dr. Bob Palmer
“Early Edmond Banking” by Dr. Bob Palmer sits on the back wall of InterFirst Bank in Edmond. It was sponsored by Union Bank in partnership with the Edmond Visual Arts Commission. The mural was painted in 2005. This particular piece is one that Dr. Palmer remembers vividly, as the car depicted in the mural is one of the first that he ever painted. While working on this project, he learned a lot about the city, met new clients, and had a lot of fun along the way. In an interview with Dr. Palmer, he said, “I have made many great memories over the years. My clients have become more like family to me.”
9
Edmond Stations Land Run Settlers Dr. Bob Palmer and UCO Students
“Edmond Stations Land Run Settlers” was created by Dr. Bob Palmer and University of Central Oklahoma students. It was painted in the alley next to the Historic School House in the year 2002 and can be seen from the schoolhouse window. This piece was paid for in partnership with the Edmond Historic Preservation Trust. Dr. Palmer and his students learned a great deal of history while working on this mural. Palmer said that he has learned more about history while painting than he has in any other season of life. When asked about his colleagues on this painting, he said, “I am thankful that the university allowed me to teach mural painting.” Some of his former students now paint for him, while some have even become his competitors.

Yesterday's Commerce Dr. Bob Palmer
“Yesterday’s Commerce” by Dr. Bob Palmer was painted on the back of Sherry’s Drugstore in 2006. It was sponsored by the Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered by Sherry Ross, Sherry’s Drugstore, and Palmer Studios. This mural is one of the thousands painted by Dr. Palmer that has historic connotations. Palmer, who has been called the “Godfather of Mural Painting,” has created many paintings honoring the state and its past. He loves this state and says that he will continue to honor Oklahoma through his work. When talking about why he loves the state, he said, “We’re very complicated, very diverse, but it’s all Oklahoma.”
11
Mainstreet Edmond Dr. Bob Palmer and UCO Students
“Mainstreet Edmond” by Dr. Bob Palmer and University of Central Oklahoma students was painted in the year 2004 and serves as a reminder of the beauty of the spirit of Edmond. It was paid for in partnership with Jan Boyington, Bob and Kathy Thomas, and Larry Willingham. A large concept in several of Dr. Palmer’s art pieces is painting Americana and Oklahoma history. Although many of his murals follow this theme, they are all unique. Dr. Palmer feels that Edmond is a great provider for a fair amount of the antiquity of Oklahoma. He believes that the art around the city tells a majority of the story of our state, and said, “I think Edmond is great for a lot of reasons, and public art is one of them.”

The Web Palmer Studios Inc.
“The Web” by Palmer Studios Inc. is another one of Dr. Bob Palmer’s fine works. Sitting in Hafer Park, this mural displays an unbelievable nature inspired theme. Dr. Palmer has taken influence from all across the world. He has painted in several states, and even in countries such as Greece, Mexico, and Croatia. Although he has travelled the globe for his art, he feels there is nothing like painting in Oklahoma, saying “It is who we are and where we come from.” This particular mural was sponsored by the Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with the Edmond Parks Foundation. It was painted in 2006, and still looks magnificent today.
