The Forest of Pipstorn

Northeast of Faaborg (Pipstorn Skov) was a burial site and place of worship for thousands of years. The long barrows are the oldest known burial sites in the woods. They were built by the first Danish peasants in the early Stone Age (approx. 3600-3200 B.C.). A pamphlet describing the area is available at the tourist office. On the Island of Lyø, once about 52 burial mounds and stone dolmens could be seen on the island. Today, only five of them remain intact – among them the The Bell Stone (Klokkestenen) on the west side of the island. The stone dolmens were used as burial chambers for the leading figures of the Lyø society in the early Stone Age. A pamphlet describing the island is available at the tourist office in Faaborg.
