Sale

Indiana’s premiere shopping event, the Vera Bradley Outlet Sale, featuring their famous quilted handbags, luggage and accessories, takes place annually right here in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Shoppers are more than happy to stock up on items for themselves, Mother’s Day, birthday presents and wedding party gifts. The possibilities are truly endless at this once-a-year shopping extravaganza. The Vera Bradley Outlet Sale is a perfect girlfriend getaway.

Dates for the 2015 sale are Wednesday, April 8 through Sunday, April 12 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

Vera Bradley fans travel from across the U.S. to attend this five-day sale. The first three days of the sale will feature exclusive ticket sessions for a $5 admittance fee. Tickets are purchased via Ticketmaster.com or at an authorized Ticketmaster location.

Why would you mark your calendar and pre-register for a sale? This is not a normal sale. The Vera Bradley Outlet Sale is an experience! Both the sheer number of shoppers and the vast amount of product at the Vera Bradley Outlet Sale will blow you away. There are rows and rows of displays – featuring items such as handbags and purses, laptop bags, backpacks and wallets. You will also find printed clothing items, eyeglass cases, stationary, office supplies and more – all in the stunning, bold and colorful patterns that make Vera Bradley items unique. And the best part? The sale features a variety of retired colors, collections and styles, and all items are 40 to 60 percent off regular price!

These days are divided into different shopping “sessions.” Each session varies in time so that shoppers can easily find a time to shop matching their availability. The last two days of the sale are free admittance, but pre-registration is required so event organizers and volunteers can adequately staff and serve shoppers. You can stay up-to-date on this year’s sale by visiting the Vera Bradley Outlet Sale online at www. VisitFortWayne.com/verabradley.

Insider Tips: • Save the date and pre-register to secure your entry to the five-day sale. • Bring a shopping list with you. It will help keep your focus as you dig through an almost overwhelming amount of product. • Be prepared to find almost every style – but in a limited selection of patterns. So, have a few pattern options in mind as you look for your favorite bag. • Dress comfortably. While the checkout process is efficient, you will likely wait to purchase your items. Enjoy the experience and don’t hesitate to bring some snacks or water to drink while waiting. • Consider booking a hotel room to extend your stay and enjoy the many attractions and fine dining experiences Fort Wayne has to offer. Find packages and learn more at www.VisitFortWayne.com/verabradley.

fest

2015

Fort Wayne’s Holiday season is nothing short of magical, thanks to our annual HolidayFest. Plan a festive getaway in Fort Wayne around the holidays! Between special holiday events and our great attractions and museums, there are things for all ages to enjoy. Come downtown for the Night of Lights. On the night before Thanksgiving, downtown shines bright! Watch the traditional lighting of Santa and his Reindeer along with dozens of other displays, and then end the evening with the grand finale fireworks at Parkview Field! It’s just the start to an amazing season of holiday events, including the Embassy Theatre’s Festival of Trees, the Botanical Conservatory’s Christmas displays, The History Center’s Festival of Gingerbread, and dozens of others. Another great way to enjoy the lights is at the Fantasy of Lights. Load up the car, grab some hot chocolate and enjoy the drive through the Fantasy of Lights at Franke Park - right next to the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo.

Of course, with all of the hustle and bustle of the holidays it’s nice to sit down and relax! Whether you stop in to one of downtown Fort Wayne’s great restaurants while browsing the beautiful lights, or sit down for a bite after a day of shopping at Jefferson Pointe or Glenbrook Square, the “City of Restaurants” has a little something for every craving. While you’re in town you’ll want to be sure to take in a sporting event. Both the Fort Wayne Komets and Mad Ants Basketball are in action throughout the holiday season and are perfect for a date night, a group outing or some family fun.

November and enjoy the great local stores downtown Fort Wayne has to offer. We make holiday fun easy and affordable with our outstanding hotel packages. From romance packages to packages offering fun for the whole family (and a pool to splash around in), you won’t want to miss out on these great offers. You can find a complete list at www.VisitFortWayne.com.

Or get in on the action yourself! Hit the ice at the Headwaters Park outdoor skating rink, where you’ll want to make plans to skate under the stars. And, you’ll definitely want to bring your shopping list with you. Wrap up your shopping and discover local businesses with Holly Trolley shopping! Hop on one of the trolleys that will be circulating downtown on the last Saturday in

Celebrate with us! For more information, check out Fort Wayne online at www.VisitFortWayne.com, or call one of our Visitor Information Specialists at 1-800-767-7752. We’d love to help you plan a memorable getaway this holiday season!

celebrate

with Fort Wayne attractions in

2015

Two of Fort Wayne’s most family-friendly attractions are celebrating birthdays in 2015, and you’re invited to the party!

The zoo also features four rides, where visitors can tickle their toes in the treetops on the Sky Safari, enjoy a Log Ride though the Australian Outback, ride an Endangered Species Carousel, and enjoy an All-American train ride.

The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, consistently named “one of the top ten zoos in the nation,” is marking 50 years of serving families.

“The level of interaction here is very high,” adds Anderson. “People want to do things, not just see exhibits.”

Looking back at the past 50 years, Jim Anderson, Zoo Director, says the most noteworthy accomplishment is the fact that since the zoo opened, more than 20 million people have come through the gate. In his words, “That’s a lot of lives to have touched.” So many of those visitors return year after year due to the unprecedented accessibility of the zoo (exhibits are built to be enjoyed from a kids-eye-view) and the variety of animals and experiences all throughout the grounds.

20

He’s also proud of the fact that while the zoo has grown in land and amenities, it has remained “close to its traditions and roots.” He adds, “We want to be better, not bigger.” Similarly, Science Central— which will celebrate its 20th year in the community—adds to the quality of life in Northeast Indiana with their commitment to excellence, education and fun! For nearly 20 years, Science Central has empowered youth with the simple philosophy of anybody can enjoy science. Martin Fisher, Executive Director, says opening a facility of this caliber in a historic building was quite the accomplishment. (Science Central is housed in a former power plant.) No other institution exists like it in

Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo

the region, which makes it a real jewel. More than 1.7 million people have visited since 1995! Inside, visitors enjoy 35,000 square feet of both permanent and temporary exhibits. Fisher says there can be as many as three new exhibits in a given month. For example, last year they debuted “Science on a Sphere” – an innovative way to celebrate space, weather and other sciences. These two outstanding attractions are the start to an outstanding Fort Wayne family getaway. Combine them with a festival and overnight hotel package, and make memories together this season! Another nod to the days of yesteryear, H. Souder & Sons General Store, looks like something right out of an old western movie. The façade resembles an old country store, and the inside boasts old-time treats and kitsch. Think Coke memorabilia, ice cold bottled soda, penny candy, homemade jams, fresh roasted coffee, and local Amish cookies and baked goods. A day of shopping calls for some nourishment. Why not visit the town’s full-service restaurant, the Grabill Inn? Here they serve standard American fare with an impressive menu − everything from frittatas to chili cheese nachos. Or try Das Nolt Family Dinner Haus. And then, be sure to top off your meal with a sweet treat from the Grabill Dairy Sweet. It’s a tasty way to end a lovely day.

After a day in Grabill, you will likely find out why they are known as “A Friendly Little Town.” Visit them online at www.grabill.net

walking tours Fort Wayne is a great place to visit if you enjoy being active. Some of the most unique views of the city can be found by exploring our extensive trail system. TRAILS Our 81-mile trail system connects parks, nature preserves, splash pads and community centers, making the destination as fun as the journey! Explore Foster Park and enjoy beautiful views of the gardens, golf course or river while you walk. Bring your bike along and pedal from the scenic Towpath Trail to Rockhill Park. Rockhill has a playground and picnic tables, so it is a great lunchtime destination. Make sure you check out the trails that lead to our many splash pads. Shoaff Park not only has an amazing splash pad to help you beat the summer heat, but it is also home to a Frisbee golf course, basketball court, tennis and boats, and a playground. Another splash pad is located at Kreager Park, which is home to Taylor’s Dream Boundless Playground, an innovative playground accessible to children of all abilities. The ride there is fairly flat for biking and well worth the jaunt.

Another unique way to enjoy Fort Wayne is through our three rivers. Take a trip to Fort Wayne Outfitters on the banks of the St. Marys River downtown to rent kayaks, canoes, and stand-uppaddle boards. Gliding down the rivers offers a unique opportunity to see the city; get glimpses of wildlife including the fish, turtles, and beavers that call the rivers and their banks home, all while enjoying views of the city skyline. WALKING TOURS

By Holley Taylor

Or, take the Sculpture with Purpose tour, highlighting downtown’s 50 unique bike rack sculptures. Fort Wayne is home to numerous art galleries located across our city. No matter where you stay, chances are there is a gallery not too far away. In Downtown Fort Wayne, you will find the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, located on the downtown Arts Campus; the 1832 Studio and Gallery, which offers artists a place to not only display their work but also create it; 3R Gallery, which features unique exhibitions and is owned by an artist herself; Castle Gallery Fine Art, which features nationally recognized artists and is set in a three story historic mansion; and the Lotus Gallery, which is also home to yoga and wellness classes.

The downtown campus of the Allen County Public Library also houses a gallery with changing exhibits, which is free to browse. And, if you want to see some great local art but are worried about scheduling, combine it with your lunch or dinner outing. Pint and Slice, Henry’s and the Dash-In all serve great food and line their walls with local art available for purchase. Outside of the city center, there is even more art to explore. Artists own and staff one gallery on the Southwest side of town, the Orchard Gallery. Nearby, you will find Gallery 8010, the Langhinrichs Gallery and Artworks the Galleria

of Fine Art. A bit more central south is Wunderkammer Gallery. This very unique gallery hosts incredible modern art with the mission of revitalizing the community through art. in Fort Wayne’s Parks

By Katie Robinson

During the summer you can cool off on the large splash pad that is designed to be accessible for all children. In addition to playgrounds and sports fields, Kreager Park also has a ton of open space perfect for taking a stroll, flying kites on a windy day or biking on the Rivergreenway.

Fort Wayne is known for is our amazing parks and trails system. Fort Wayne boasts over 80 parks and 50 playgrounds, so whether you are looking for a place to take the kids for a day of sunshine and play, or want to explore the more natural side of our city, we’ve got the park for you! If you have kids, Kreager Park is one of the best places to go and let them run wild! Home of Taylor’s Dream: Boundless Playground, this park is a wonderful place to take your children of all abilities to have some fun. This playground features different “pods” designed to appeal to a number of age groups and social and physical needs.

Headwaters Park welcomes you into downtown Fort Wayne, with beautiful scenery no matter the season. Known for being the hub of the downtown Fort Wayne festival season, Headwaters Park is a great place to take a leisurely walk, enjoy the Rivergreenway and have some fun at one of our many festivals! When the air gets a little chill, Headwaters Park is still the place to go – locals love the gorgeous fall foliage lining Clinton Street in the fall, and in the winter it houses the Headwaters Park Ice Skating Rink– perfect for family fun or a special date night! Located on Fort Wayne’s south side near beautiful historic neighborhoods, Foster Park is one of our city’s most beloved parks for a variety of reasons. Are you an avid golfer? Foster Golf Course offers a great layout surrounded by park land and woods. Have a pet pooch? Check out Pawster Park, the perfect spot to let your beloved pet play and run free outside. Getting married? The Foster Park Bridal Glen has served as the backdrop for many beautiful outdoor Fort Wayne weddings.

Experience Lakeside Park and Rose Gardens, one of Fort Wayne’s prettiest parks in the heart of the city. The reflective pools of Lakeside Rose Gardens are a wedding hotspot, and even if wedding bells aren’t in your future, the Rose Gardens are still a sight to see as they have displayed award-winning roses for over 50 years! The park also features spaces for children to play, basketball courts, ponds and connectivity to Fort Wayne’s great trails system. Nestled on Fort Wayne’s north side, Salomon Farm Park offers a relaxed rural setting. The park is anchored by an old farm house that has been kept in beautiful shape and allows the community to learn about farming, gardening, bird watching and a number of other programs geared toward nature lovers. There is a 1.7 mile trail surrounding the property perfect for walking, running and biking and also connects to the Pufferbelly Trail. If you’re looking for a unique slice of life, Salomon Farm Park is worth a visit. There are many other great parks not listed here that are worth a visit – Learn more at www. VisitFortWayne.com. food trucks

While Fort Wayne is known as “The City of Restaurants,” a more non-traditional approach to dining is making a large impact on the local dining scene. Local food trucks are challenging residents and visitors to think beyond the traditional brick-andmortar restaurant setting for tasty fare. Good food can be enjoyed on the go, from one of several locally owned mobile operations. From all-American to Cajun, these food purveyors offer something for everyone. Affine Food Truck Facebook.com/affinefoodtruck @affinefoodtruck Affine’s differentiates itself with its farm-to-fork approach that includes free-range, locally sourced pork, chicken and duck. You’ll love their lunch sandwiches and late night tacos. Fort Wayne’s

independent stores

Get a taste for Fort Wayne’s flavor by shopping at our independent or locally owned stores. A few of the yummiest local stops include The Olive Twist, located in the Covington Plaza shopping center on Fort Wayne’s southwest side. Pick up a bottle or two of their gourmet olive oil or aged balsamic vinegar. Try a sample at their tasting bar, and create your own “twist” to discover a new world of flavor! Your tastebuds will also love the sweet treats at DeBrand Fine Chocolates and Poptique. DeBrand offers tours, tastings and gourmet delights. It’s no wonder that DeBrand is a mainstay, with four Fort Wayne locations! And who doesn’t love a bag of popcorn as a snack? The folks at Poptique have taken popcorn to the next level: think flavors like birthday cake and s’mores. You can find their shop in Jefferson Pointe.

One of downtown Fort Wayne’s must-shop-stops is Creative Women of the World. If unique is what you’re after, this place is for you. Here you’ll find one-of-akind items handmade by artisan women in developing countries. They have everything from jewelry to stationary. You can find their shop on Wayne Street downtown. Nearby, Emiley’s Haute Cottage offers home accessories, antiques, painted furniture and more, in a charming two-story brick carriage house downtown. A visit to the Fort Wayne Museum of Art is not complete without browsing the Paradigm Gallery. Here you’ll find jewelry, wood turned objects, glass blown novelties, ceramics, hand-made apparel and accessories, paintings, as well as photography and paper and origami objects.

Just north of downtown, you’ll want to revive the lost art of letter writing after a visit to Hedgehog Press. Specialty items include hand-crafted stationary, coasters and jewelry. In addition, you’ll want to visit Opal and Ruby Gift Emporium. This shop exudes charm. Their inventory includes such gems as hand-made jewelry, pillows, picture frames candles, cookies and bags. Of course, you’ll also want to stop by the Visitors Center for Fort Wayne souveniers and locally made gifts. This is just the start to a unique Fort Wayne shopping experience! For additional suggestions or directions to any of these unique shops give us a call at 1-800-7677752 or search “shopping” at VisitFortWayne.com/blog.

the best “latte art” in town. Make sure to have your camera ready because you are going to love their designs. Their location is filled with big storefront windows, large ceilings, delicious quiche and chocolate from Fort Wayne’s very own DeBrand Fine Chocolates. Their Peanut Butter Truffles are a local favorite.

If you are visiting Downtown Fort Wayne for the first time, there is a long list of places you have to enjoy before you leave. Downtown Fort Wayne is reinventing itself as a unique place to enjoy one of a kind, homegrown shopping, diners and entertainment. Original food, vintage finds, art shows and live music are all part of the shift occurring in the urban core of Northeast Indiana. Whether you are an early riser or enjoy the nightlife, there is plenty to do from that first cup of coffee to a night out at one of the local establishments. So, get out your highlighter and start taking notes for an enjoyable day in the Fort. If you are a coffee lover, stop by Fortezza Coffee located on Calhoun Street. They offer local coffee from Utopian Coffee and create some of 58 I VisitFortWayne I 2015

Across the street from Fortezza Coffee, you will find local favorites Dash-In and 816 Pint and Slice. They both offer delicious, unique food options and outside dining during warmer months. If you stop by Pint and Slice, we highly recommend the White Album or Pepperoni Pizza. At Dash-In, don’t leave without trying their tomato bisque and a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich. Of course, there is plenty to do outside as well. Headwaters Park is located on the north side of Downtown Fort Wayne near our famous rivers. The park is filled with endless walking paths, gorgeous greenery, and famed statues. With the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge to the north, the Old Fort right across the walking bridge to the east, and Headwaters Park Ice Rink in the center during colder months, there is plenty to do here to keep anyone entertained for hours. South of Headwaters Park is the Arts United Center, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Artlink, the Fort Wayne Ballet, The History Center and Fort Wayne Dance Collective. With shows occurring regularly, it is

worth checking their schedules. Stop in during normal business hours at the local galleries or museums to take in the latest art shows and tours.

If you need a place to relax, both Don Hall’s Gas House and Club Soda are locations that people drive from all over town to enjoy. They are located just north of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. Don Hall’s Gas House has the best Beef Tenderloin Salad in the Midwest. The Timotini at Club Soda (home to all things Martini) is a mix of tropical mixed drink that will make sure you remember Fort Wayne for a long time. Any local will tell you that if you come to Fort Wayne, you have to stop by our Fort Wayne Famous Coney Island. Located on Main Street, they have been in business for over a century and have been serving the same menu since day one. Order a Coney Dog, chili and an original Coke bottle for the perfect meal. To the west of Coney Island is Stoner’s Fun Store. With endless rows of gifts and costumes, it’s a great place to buy gifts for those you love or get some original outfits for a night out with friends, especially during the holidays. If you need a newspaper or magazine, stop by Riegel’s Pipe and Tobacco on S. Calhoun Street. If you are looking for a stack of low priced but recent DVD’s for your collection, B&B Loan Company is located next door and offers great finds in their pawn shop.

If you are looking to do more than basic shopping, Downtown Fort Wayne has become the source for local vintage shops. Recommended shopping options included House of Furniture, Emiley’s Haute Cottage, Saving Grace Vintage, Creative Women of the World, Friends of the Third World Shoppe or Visit Fort Wayne. You will find great products for your home as well as unique Fort Wayne gifts for loved ones. The evenings are filled with options depending on your taste. In the warmer months, the TinCaps have numerous home games to enjoy at Parkview Field. With crowd involvement, amazing food and interactive hosts, it is a night to remember. If you do stop by, try their homemade taco salads and enjoy the lawn seats, especially if you are on a budget. Downtown also boasts a local movie house, the Cinema Center, that plays both big-budget films as well as independent, critically acclaimed movies. You will enjoy their comfortable seating and beer and wine options during each feature. Local eateries and pubs often have a great selection of local artists. From Columbia Street West (a favorite of twenty-somethings) to The Phoenix (a hot spot for younger and older adults) there are plenty of places to enjoy a cold drink, lively atmosphere and some great music. From music

to engaging nightlife, there is plenty to enjoy. O’Reilly’s Irish Pub has a great view of the ballpark and is a hotspot for pool sharks. Champions Bar and Grill is a great place for good food with a great view of any game playing on television. The Thirsty Camel is a local favorite for late night dancing and mingling. J.K. O’Donnell’s has the best beer flights. Main Street Bistro and Martini Lounge offers the best martini flights. There is no shortage of options. There are plenty of places to stay within walking distance of all of the action and entertainment your heart could desire. Downtown Fort Wayne has everything you need, with premium hotel rooms at both the Hilton and the Courtyard by Marriott, as well as local bed and breakfast options at The LaSalle and The Sion Bass House Spa. Last but not least, before you leave, make sure to stop by Cindy’s Diner for breakfast on your way out of town. It’s part of Fort Wayne’s heritage and will end your stay on a high note. Whether you follow these suggestions perfectly or wonder a little off course, there is plenty to experience and enjoy in Downtown Fort Wayne. It is not too hard to make new friends or find something to do without looking too hard. Home to the TinCaps, great dining, unique shopping, and Midwest hospitality, Downtown welcomes everyone with open arms!

taste Fort Wayne’s breweries & wineries

Want to discover a Fort Wayne hotspot? Local breweries and wineries have plenty to offer: BREWERIES Mad Anthony Brewing Company opened in 1999 and it’s been a staple ever since. Never wanting to come across as too serious, Mad Anthony’s has built a reputation on being fun loving and a place for good friends to come together and enjoy delicious local bites and brews! What started as the first micro-brewery in Fort Wayne has expanded to four locations in northern Indiana. One of the newest breweries in Fort Wayne is Summit City Brewerks. In addition to being a local craft beer brewer, they also bring in local food trucks to serve their customers delicious food. At any given time you’ll find 10-20 small batch craft beers on tap, in addition to guest beers, ciders and sodas. Another favorite, Granite City, offers a polished, casual American restaurant, and the handcrafted beers—also available in growlers —are moderately priced and offer unique styles and flavors not typically produced by major breweries. WINERIES Two EEs Winery is one of the newest award-winning wineries in our area with 40 acres of trails and vineyards. Opened in 2011, Two EEs features fruit wines, red wines and rose wines that come in a variety of styles appealing to a number of

pallets. The art-deco décor gives a little bit of a fancier feel, perfect for a ladies day out! Another local favorite winery is Country Heritage Winery just outside of Fort Wayne in LaOtto, Indiana. Country Heritage Winery has a truly laid back feel, which is perfect for relaxing on their front porch with one of their delicious wine slushies. To the north, in Fremont, Indiana, you’ll find Satek Winery. One of the first local wineries in Northern Indiana, Satek has grown over the last twenty years to produce over 13,000 gallons of wine a year! The winery lies in an area known as the “land of 101 lakes,” creating a picturesque wine tasting experience. NIGHTLIFE Looking for a place to hang out and enjoy the local scene? The Phoenix offers an eclectic menu and assortment of craft cocktails. Enjoy your night on their softly lit outdoor patio as you listen to your favorite local and national bands.

By Katie Robinson and Andy Helmkamp The nearby Main Street Bistro offers 60 unique international premium red & white wine choices, superior martinis and 14 regional craft beers for your pleasure in an upscale atmosphere. Visitors to downtown also enjoy O’Reilly’s, an Irish-themed pub located adjacent to Parkview Field, and Henry’s, a local favorite featuring great specials and a gorgeous antique bar. If you’re visiting during the summer months, make sure to visit The Deck at the Old Gashouse, located along the bank of the St. Marys River right on the edge of downtown, serving your favorite drinks, food and experience like no one else in the city. And, be on the lookout for Trouble Brewing and Nick’s Wine and Martini Bar, opening in 2015. So, whether you’re looking for a local brewery, or if sipping from the vine at a winery is more your pace, the Fort Wayne area has plenty of options for quenching your thirst!

A local favorite martini bar, Club Soda, is located just south of Headwaters Park in a refurbished Indiana Textile building. Long a favorite downtown martini bar, Club Soda hosts a multitude of Jazz musicians in an intimate, low key environment.

dishon Fort Wayne FroYo

Ice cream may be America’s favorite frozen treat, but frozen yogurt (froyo for short) is likely a close second. FroYo is easy to find in the Summit City. Just a few current options include Yo Yo: Yogurt on Your Own, Yum Yums: Yogurt U Make, Orange Leaf, Red Mango and ZoYo. Inside all of these stores you will find a wall of self-serve machines offering up yogurt options for the customer to create frozen concoctions. Next is the best part: the toppings bar, of course! Here, you can adorn your yogurt creation with everything from strawberries to chocolate chip cookie dough pieces. Yearning for something out of the ordinary? Chances are, you’re in luck. Flavors at each shop run the gamut from standard vanilla, to strawberry, to cookies and cream. Some stores even have a few sugar-free options. Bottom line: there is

something for everyone. And, for the sugar junkie, many offer edible waffle cups. Insider’s Note: The cost of the yogurt is determined by weight. Most stores charge about 40 cents per ounce. So, for a moderate amount of yogurt with toppings, expect to pay about $5.00. Most offer outside seating, which is perfect for a warm summer night. Speaking of decor, all shops are brightly colored and decorated in a fun, kidfriendly style. The environment really makes a trip for frozen yogurt feel like a special treat. Icy desserts are a summer staple. Make yours frozen yogurt – it is customizable and affordable – the perfect treat.

at The Genealogy Center

One of Fort Wayne’s many treasures is The Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library. The Genealogy Center is home to the nation’s largest public genealogy collection and is housed in a gorgeous $65 million facility. The Genealogy Center is home to over 456,000 print volumes and 660,000 microfilm resources. These holdings include family and local histories from the United States, Virgin Islands, Ireland and Eastern Europe. The five rooms of The Genealogy Center and its online catalog include international collections,

historical periodicals, ship passenger lists, military regimental histories, southern plantation records, Native American census and tribal records – to name a few. The Genealogy Center offers several computer banks for research, as well as wireless internet services throughout the facility. The Genealogy Center is led by trained genealogy staff and provides free resources to get visitors started in their genealogical research. One way to start is by taking a video tour of the center and reviewing the suggested plan to get started in genealogical research. These planning tools are available on the center’s website at www.genealogycenter.org.

The Genealogy Center is conveniently located at 900 Library Plaza Drive in the heart of downtown Fort Wayne. This location is ideal for visitors who may want to experience the other exciting downtown Fort Wayne attractions, such as the Grand Wayne Center, Parkview Field, Embassy Theatre, Fort Wayne Museum of Art and Artlink. Plan a trip to discover you family heritage, right here in Fort Wayne at the Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center.

We brag about our low cost of living in Fort Wayne, but how about our low cost of FUN?! Check out just a few of the countless activities that you and your family can enjoy in our city for free – or almost free! Explore Kids Crossing, Taylor’s Dream, Three Rivers Junction, and our 53 other playgrounds. Or, splash at our sprayground parks, open for free in the summer, starting at 9 a.m. Enjoy Last Saturdays (by the Downtown Improvement District) and participate in free or half-priced events all over downtown. Examine historical documents at the Karpeles Museum, browse the art at Artlink and the Castle Gallery or stroll the sacred at the Cathedral Museum – all of which are free! Grab lunch to go and take it to a free concert at Lunch on the Square during the summer in downtown Fort Wayne.

Browse the newest exhibit at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art with free admission on Thursdays from 5-8 p.m. Catch a free family-friendly film on Wednesday nights all summer long at the Foellinger Theatre Summer Movie Series. Bike, walk, or run on Fort Wayne Trails. Listen to great local music at a Friday Nites Live concert – every Friday of the summer at Jefferson Pointe. In the spring, you can view the beautiful flowers at Foster Park – the tulips are legendary. Or in late summer, hit the Lakeside Rose Garden for the most beautiful specimens in town!

And very cheap.... Catch TinCaps Baseball with $5 lawn seats and $1 concessions on Mondays. Plan a trip to University of Saint Francis Edwin Clark Schouweiler Memorial Planetarium. Shows are $4/adults and $3/ children under 18 and seniors.

Soak in the history at Historic Fort Wayne. The Fort’s grounds are open for visitors every day, with special programming monthly.

Taste the secret recipes at DeBrand Fine Chocolates’ behind-the-scenes tour.

Tour the Little River Wetlands and see animals and plants of Fort Wayne. Enjoy a silent movie at the historic Embassy Theatre. Stop by the Visitors Center to pick up a walking tour map – choose from our Downtown Walking Tour, Sculpture with Purpose map, or the Heritage Trail. All are free and offer a unique taste of the city! Visit the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and hop aboard one of the last surviving steam locomotives in the world: Nickel Plate Road no. 765. Enjoy the Indiana Native Tree Walk on IPFW’s campus. Go stargazing with the Fort Wayne Astronomical Society on Saturday nights.

Share in the holiday spirit in downtown Fort Wayne at HolidayFest.

Visit the breathtaking Allen County Courthouse (cell phones and cameras not admitted).

Browse the genealogy collection (the nation’s second largest!) at the Allen County Public Library downtown.

In winter months, you can go sledding, build a snowman, make snow angels, or feed the squirrels at any of our parks.

Our library system is one of the best in the nation and each branch offers a place to relax and let the kids play and explore!

Hear a free concert at Rock the Plaza at the Downtown Library, all summer long.

Uncover local food at Farmers Markets downtown and around the city.

Walk through Lindenwood Cemetery and visit the graves (and do grave rubbings) of many of Fort Wayne’s founders. Lindenwood’s office offers a free book about the history and famous people buried there.

Stroll the great shopping at Glenbrook and Jefferson Pointe and enjoy their free indoor play areas – both offer a great spot for kids to blow off some steam!

Watch a $5 midnight movie on the last Saturday of each month at Cinema Center. Take in our affordable museums, including the History Center ($6 for adults), Firefighter’s Museum ($4 for adults), and Botanical Conservatory ($5 for adults). Enjoy admission to Allen County Parks, Preserves and Nature Centers for only $2. Enjoy Kid’s Korner indoor playground at McMillen Community Center for only $1.
