Fort Wayne:
festival city Headwaters Park is Fort Wayne’s
No matter when you are visiting Fort Wayne, chances are good that there is a celebration going on – Fort Wayne is a festival-loving city, and you’re invited to the party! The festival season officially launches with Kickstart, May’s month-long celebration of art, bicycling, music and theatre. Throughout the summer, dozens of other festivals come to play, including BBQ Ribfest, Greekfest, Germanfest, Riverpalooza, Busker Fest, and more! But clearly, our biggest festival of the year is the Three Rivers Festival, a two-week celebration of the arts, street food, and fun. TRF is also home to other unique events including raft races, midway rides, waiter-waitress competitions, Chalk Walk, bed races and more. The festival even kicks off with a parade and ends with a spectacular fireworks celebration.
In the fall, you will want to check out the period-authentic Johnny Appleseed Festival, where you can sample fall foods and shop the many craft stalls. In addition, Fright Night turns downtown into a scary spectacle each October! Another Fort Wayne tradition is the Night of Lights that rings in the holiday season on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Throughout the winter, visitors enjoy chilly fun at festivals including Winterval and Weather the Fort. Or, if you want a new experience, check out Hobnobben, the first-ever film festival in Fort Wayne, presented by Cinema Center. For more information on these, and hundreds of other special events and festivals, head to VisitFortWayne.com/ events – we’re ready to party with you!
festival headquarters!

Sweetwater Sound a music lovers

Sweetwater Sound, located on the outskirts of Fort Wayne, is one of the most respected businesses in the music industry, and one of the largest companies in town. Today it has grown into a sprawling campus with hundreds of employees, boasting the title of third-largest music retailer in the world! The company sells everything from guitars to recording software, while maintaining world-class recording studios and performance facilities. The best part about Sweetwater is that many of the first-class amenities that are enjoyed by their customers and employees are also open to the public. Visitors are free to come into the Sweetwater building and explore what makes this one of the best places to work and play in Fort Wayne. Whether you’re a huge music fan, tech aficionado, or just want to see what all of the buzz is about, a trip to Sweetwater is like exploring a music lover’s playground! Bicentennial Celebration
Join Indiana’s yearlong from December 11, 2015 to December 11, 2016!
Throughout the year, Allen County community organizations will be celebrating the state’s bicentennial with dozens of unique projects – from The History Center’s “200 @ 200” object exhibit to Allen County Parks’ Trailblazers program. Local events like Winterval, Three Rivers Festival, TinCaps baseball games, and Be A Tourist in Your Own Hometown will all be branded with Bicentennial themes as well. To showcase our Hoosier pride, the Allen County Public Library will be hosting a county-wide Progressive Block Party April 1st to April 3rd. Stop by any of the Allen County Public Library locations that weekend to engage in a scavenger hunt challenge and enjoy birthday cake. And, you can participate in the state-wide Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay in Fort Wayne on October 1st. This major commemorative event will unite and inspire Hoosiers. Symbolically, we will be passing the torch to the next generation of innovators, leaders, and community members.
Plan your Bicentennial activities calendar today! Visit www.allencounty200.org to learn more and discover great events and activities taking place during your visit! Or, follow and like us on facebook.com/allencounty200, twitter.com/allencounty200 and instagram.com/allencounty200. You can also find us at #allencounty200. We look forward to celebrating with you in 2016!
Celebrate History. Ignite the Future. Indiana Bicentennial’s motto for celebrating 200 years of rich history is rooted in humble and tenacious beginnings, while leaving a legacy for future generations of Hoosiers. 32

explorethree rivers Fort Wayne’s
Fort Wayne was founded because of three things: our rivers. Since Fort Wayne’s establishment, our three rivers: the St. Mary’s, the St. Joseph, and the Maumee, have been an intrinsic part of the city. From adventuring the trails along the river, to getting out onto the blueways, there are plenty of opportunities for you to experience and bond with the water! Fort Wayne is home to 86 parks and 81 miles of trails, the most prominent of which is Rivergreenway. The Rivergreenway Trail stretches 25 miles from Fort Wayne to New Haven, winding along the banks of the rivers. This trail is perfect for walking, jogging, rollerblading, biking, and more.
You can also rent canoes or kayaks from Earth Adventures Unlimited. This is a great way to see the city! Whichever way you choose to play on the rivers, you won’t be disappointed. The combination of the rivers’ rich histories and their natural and urban beauty makes each adventure a memorable one. In the coming years, you’ll find even more ways to explore the rivers as a result of the RiverFront Fort Wayne project, a plan to develop the rivers and make them more accessible. Watch for increased festivals and programming, as well as arts and activities on the banks, and in the water.
Learn more at www.VisitFortWayne.com/riverfront
Don’t want to travel with your bike? Fort Wayne Outfitters make it easy for you to hop on a trail and enjoy the river scenery with their bike rentals. Another way to travel the Rivergreenway is by segway! You can get a personalized tour of Fort Wayne and learn about our rich heritage and cultural significance on a guided segway tour from Tour Fort Wayne Segway Tours. If you’re ready to venture onto the waters, you can do it by canoe, single or double kayak, or standing paddleboard. Fort Wayne Outfitters rents all three at hourly, half-day, and full-day rates.

History Center
Fort Wayne’s history: a microcosm of the From the days when the Miami Indians settled the area now known as Lakeside Park, through the settlement of this territory and its desirable location as a crossroads, Fort Wayne has embodied our nation’s spirit. EARLY SETTLEMENT
Three rivers—the St. Mary’s, St. Joseph and Maumee—define Fort Wayne’s landscape, providing access to the nearby Wabash Valley and on to the Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico. The French were first to come to this area to capitalize on the fur trade and the strategic advantage for growth. The Miami settled the area, calling it Kekionga, around 1712 and the Miami became astute and wealthy business people, charging others a fee to portage their supplies. As you learn more about Fort Wayne’s history, you will become acquainted with Chief Jean Baptiste deRichardville, son of a French trader. Richardville, whose home is a National Historic Landmark located off Bluffton Road, was raised in both Miami and French cultures and at one time was the wealthiest person in this area.
FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR
The French and Indian War began in 1755 and years of fighting ensued. Despite the animosity among them, the Miami and French sided with the British during the Revolutionary War. Key names of the time were Miami Chief Little Turtle, Gen. Josiah Harmar, Gen. Arthur St. Clair and William Wells. In 1792, General Anthony Wayne was appointed by Washington to lead the armys of the United States. A series of forts were built along the Ohio River to Kekionga in 1793. The U.S. government had, in effect, drawn a line

along the Three Rivers, determined to drive Native Americans northwest of that line. The Battle of Fallen Timbers was a decisive conflict of that time, taking place on August 20, 1794. On September 17, Wayne and his forces arrived in Kekionga and began building Fort Wayne. The fort was completed on October 22. Wayne left shortly afterwards, never to return. The Treaty of Greenville was signed on August 10, 1795, when twelve Native American tribes ceded the Territory of Ohio to the U.S. Chief Little Turtle wanted to have joint control over the land that he called “that glorious gate” but was not granted his wish. It was the beginning of the end of Miami domination.
EARLY 1800s
Today, Fort Wayne is the county seat of Allen County, established by the Indiana General Assembly in 1824 and named for John Allen, a soldier who defended Fort Wayne and was killed in a battle in Detroit. The 1830s saw the construction of the Wabash and Erie Canal and garnered Fort Wayne the nickname “Summit City” because it was the highest point above sea level on the canal’s route. Fort Wayne’s population grew and the city became a key spot on the Pennsylvania Railroad. Fort Wayne became home to a number of industries including multiple breweries, magnet wire, International Harvester, General Electric and many more. The Chicago Times labeled Fort Wayne in the 1870s as “the most
lawless town in Indiana.” When the new city hall was built in 1893, the basement housed the city’s jail. The structure, designed by Wing and Mahurin, was dubbed “The Hapsburg Horror” by local residents. Today, this building houses our History Center.
TODAY
Today, Fort Wayne is a thriving Midwest city that honors its past, appreciates its present, and looks forward to its future. When it comes to history, there’s something for everyone in Fort Wayne. Historical markers and statues abound and can be a part of your city tour. We invite you to explore and learn more when you visit.

dining al fresco in Fort Wayne There’s something about blue skies, sunshine and warm weather that makes enjoying a meal (and delicious drink!) that much more pleasurable. There’s no shortage of places to dine al fresco in Fort Wayne, no matter what your taste buds are in the mood for. Need some help deciding where to grab a bite and take in the scenery? Here are just a few of the great places where you can dine outside in Fort Wayne! Wine Down Tastings and Tapas Wine Down Tastings and Tapas offers a unique dining experience featuring shareable plates, craft beer and cocktails, and of course, wine. Wine Down is a great place to unwind, wine and dine, or enjoy a night out with friends. Their spacious patio for outdoor dining even overlooks the award-winning Parkview Field – the perfect view whether a Fort Wayne TinCaps baseball game is in action, or you’re just enjoying the views of downtown Fort Wayne. Make sure to take part in their winetasting – Wine Down offers over 50 wines for tasting and by the bottle! RECOMMENDED COCKTAIL: Connoisseurs of other spirits need not worry, because Wine Down does cocktails just as well as they do wine. If you’re a whiskey lover, you’ll want to try their Smoked Old Fashion. The experience of watching this cocktail being made makes it taste even better. Rather than smoking the whiskey, the bartender uses a torch to smoke a plank of hickory, and then sets the glass over it to capture the flavor.
The Deck at Hall’s Gashouse
Pint & Slice
If you ask any Fort Wayne local for their favorite dinner-and-a-breeze recommendation, chances are their answer will include The Deck. Located in downtown Fort Wayne, The Deck offers a great dining experience with a beautiful view of the St. Mary’s River. Looking for a place to grab a cold brew or tasty concoction? The Deck’s bar has become a staple during the warm-weather months. You can even enjoy a pontoon boat ride before or after you eat, making The Deck a great place to enjoy those long summer nights.
What’s better than grabbing a big slice of pizza, a pint of cold brew and enjoying a little fresh air in the heart of downtown Fort Wayne? Pint and Slice is known for their delicious New York-style pizza pies, and wide-range of beers that you can enjoy no matter what the season. Grab a seat outside and enjoy watching the hustle and bustle of downtown Fort Wayne from your seat on Calhoun Street.
RECOMMENDED COCKTAIL: Their signature drinks pack a strong punch. Try The Standard Russian: made with vodka, ginger beer, mint, and lime.
Club Soda Top-notch menu? Check. Creative cocktails? Check. Smooth jazz? Check. Beautiful, extensive outdoor seating? Check! If you’re looking for somewhere for a night out on the town with a classy, but relaxed, ambience, Club Soda is the place to go. Known for their signature cocktails and delicious Gouda dip, Club Soda is a great place to relish a beautiful night. Take your group out on the patio and enjoy good company, good food and great music while enjoying culinary delights! RECOMMENDED COCKTAIL: While they offer a full bar, you’ll want to jump straight to the martini menu. Whatever your preferences: classic (“for the purist”), a little tart (“a walk through the Garden of Eden”), sweet (“the dessert martini”), or deep in color (“the dark side”), you’ll find what you like in their 20+ item martini menu, a true reflection of their expertise as a Fort Wayne craft cocktail staple of the last 15 years.
RECOMMENDED BREW: Try one of the many great craft beers in their collection – perfect with that fresh-fromthe-oven slice.
Cork ‘N Cleaver Cork ‘N Cleaver has long been known as one of the best places to eat in Fort Wayne, due largely in part to their inventive and award-winning salad bar, hand-cut steaks and signature cleaver menus. They recently constructed an outdoor seating area and lounge, designed to create a comfortable outdoor dining experience. Come for the meal, and stay for the cozy outdoor atmosphere. RECOMMENDED COCKTAIL: Fruit-lovers rejoice for Cork’s Pink Pony (a raspberry treat) or their Vox Drop, a take on a mouth-puckering Lemon Drop!
These are just a few of the great choices for extending those warm summer days with an outdoor dining experience – many others line our streets, be sure to find your favorite!

discover your
roots
at The Genealogy Center
One of Fort Wayne’s many treasures is The Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library. The Genealogy Center is home to the nation’s largest public genealogy collection and is housed in a gorgeous $65 million facility. The Genealogy Center is home to over 456,000 print volumes and 660,000 microfilm resources. These holdings include family and local histories from the United States, Virgin Islands, Ireland and Eastern Europe. The five rooms of The Genealogy Center and its online catalog include international collections,
historical periodicals, ship passenger lists, military regimental histories, southern plantation records, Native American census and tribal records – to name a few. The Genealogy Center offers several computer banks for research, as well as wireless internet services throughout the facility. The Genealogy Center is led by a trained genealogy staff and provides free resources to get visitors started in their genealogical research. One way to start is by taking a video tour of the center and reviewing the suggested plan to get started in genealogical research. These planning tools are available on the center’s website at www.genealogycenter.org.
The Genealogy Center is conveniently located at 900 Library Plaza Drive in the heart of downtown Fort Wayne. This location is ideal for visitors who may want to experience the other exciting downtown Fort Wayne attractions, such as the Grand Wayne Center, Parkview Field, Embassy Theatre, Fort Wayne Museum of Art and Artlink. Plan a trip to discover your family heritage, right here in Fort Wayne at the Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center.

love Fort Wayne in all seasons
Whether you’re an amateur or a pro, there are wonderful spots around the Summit City to snap beautiful photos, no matter what time of year. Spring
Fall
Winter
Take a walk through the gardens of Foster Park and Lakeside Park. These two gems are beautifully landscaped to capture the colors of each season. Foster Park is best known for their massive springtime bulb display, while Lakeside Park wins awards for their rose gardens every year.
Looking for dazzling fall foliage? Explore Fox Island’s miles of wooded trails, including a special trail for exploring autumn colors. A large lake encircled by trees in multitudes of hues presents a beautiful place for a fall picnic as well. The county park and state nature preserve is located southwest of Fort Wayne near Interstate 69, exit 302.
Shoaff Park is known for its sledding and snowy vistas. The rural setting of this park and golf course make it a perfect place to snap pictures of wintery scenes. If you’re feeling even more adventurous, bring your sled and take an action video of your ride. Nearby Metea Park also offers five miles of trails to take in the crisp winter air and stroll in the freshly fallen snow. In addition, you can bundle up for more sledding at Franke Park or skating at Headwaters Park!
Summer Check out the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, open April-October. Their magical menagerie features animals from around the globe. No matter where you point your camera, you’ll be sure to capture something enchanting on your photo safari.
From pumpkin patches to apple orchards and fall festivals there are dozens of places to snap a great family picture – including the Kuehnert Dairy Farm & Fall Festival, Cook’s Orchard and Farm, Hilger Family Farm, or DeGrandchamp’s Pumpkin Patch.
You can also enjoy great views from any seat at Parkview Field. Catch the action in one of America’s top-rated minor league stadiums, and stroll the promenade, taking in the panoramic views of Downtown.
If you’d like to take it a little easier, explore any of Fort Wayne’s parks. Hidden in Headwaters Park downtown, you’ll find a bridge connecting you to The Old Fort. The apex of the bridge offers a great view of Downtown’s buildings that look spectacular when framed by the changing leaves.
For the more adventurous, check out a river tour for great views of the city you can’t see on land. Kayaks and canoes can be rented at Fort Wayne Outfitters.
Of course, if you aren’t an outdoor person, you can head to the Botanical Conservatory for some indoor photography. Warm up your winter with photos of beautiful tropical and desert plants. You’ll also love our many indoor holiday displays at the Botanical Conservatory, the Festival of Trees at the Embassy Theatre, the Festival of Gingerbread at The History Center, and more!
