Wondering what to add to your Franklin itinerary? You certainly won’t lack options; the town and its surrounding communities are filled with fun things to do, see, eat, and experience. Here are a few “must-do” attractions to get you started!

MAIN STREET

Lined with sophisticated shops, restaurants, art galleries, and more, Main Street runs through the heart of Franklin’s 16-block historic district and has been the commercial epicenter of this historic town since 1799. While you’re browsing the boutiques, note the street’s unique mix of architecture, which includes buildings from the Federal, Victorian, and Art Deco periods. Inside, you’ll notice many of these structures still have their original hardwood floors and tin ceilings.

LEIPER’S FORK

Less than ten miles from downtown Franklin, you’ll find Leiper’s Fork, a quaint, quirky village that epitomizes Tennessee’s easy Southern charm. Shop for antiques, gifts, and local art; listen to some of the region’s best singers and songwriters perform at Fox & Locke; sip grain-to-glass spirits at Leiper’s Fork Distillery; or simply relax on a front porch and enjoy the stunning pastoral landscape and slower pace. Leiper’s Fork is the location of choice for a number of world-class singers and actors, so don’t be surprised if you spot a familiar face while you’re here.

THE FACTORY AT FRANKLIN

Travel a mile down East Main Street from downtown and you’ll find The Factory at Franklin, a carefully restored 1929 stove factory that’s currently being expanded into an exciting hub of Franklin shopping, dining, and live music and shows. Whether you catch a concert at the Mockingbird Theater, pick up some new vinyl at Luna Record Shop, or chow down on delicious 100-layer doughnuts at Five Daughters Bakery, you’ll find plenty to do at The Factory, even while it’s undergoing renovations. Be sure to check out the incredible Franklin Farmers Market held here each Saturday morning!

NATCHEZ TRACE PARKWAY

Considered one of the most scenic drives in the nation, the 444-mile Natchez Trace Parkway starts in Nashville, continues through Franklin, and follows the original Natchez Trace trade route all the way to Natchez, Mississippi. Spend an hour or two on this winding two-lane road and you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of nature and stops along the way that include stunning overlooks, hiking trails, waterfalls, and historic sites. From downtown Franklin, head 10 miles down Highway 96 West until you see the iconic double-arch Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge. The entrance ramp for the parkway is right beside it.

CIVIL WAR ATTRACTIONS

On November 30, 1864, the bloody Battle of Franklin left an indelible mark on the town and its people. Evidence of that day, which left thousands of soldiers dead, can still be found in many of the historic district’s homes and businesses. One of the best ways to understand the impact of that fateful day is to tour one (or more!) of downtown Franklin’s three historic homes. Built in 1826, Carnton is a carefully preserved estate that served as the town’s largest field hospital after the battle was over. At the nearby Lotz House, you’ll learn how German immigrant Johann Albert Lotz and his young family survived the bloody Battle of Franklin as it played out on their front lawn. Across the street at the Carter House, another family endured the battle while hiding in their cellar. Their story is unforgettable.

ARRINGTON VINEYARDS

One of Tennessee’s most picturesque and popular outdoor venues can be found just outside of Franklin at Arrington Vineyards. Bring a picnic dinner and a blanket one weekend and take in gorgeous views of Williamson County’s lush, rolling hills while listening to live music and tasting some of Arrington’s wines. Don’t have time to pack a picnic? No problem! Snacks are available for purchase or you can pre-order a gourmet basket.

Franklin was made for family fun! You’ll find plenty of family-friendly activities here sure to satisfy everyone from toddlers to teens and beyond. Whether your family loves outdoor exploration, virtual gaming, farm experiences, or kid-friendly restaurants, Franklin truly has something for everyone.

AWESOME ADVENTURES

Looking for the perfect playground? Pinkerton Park boasts two fantastic playgrounds, as well as restrooms, picnic tables, and grills. The community playground in Brentwood’s Crockett Park is another great option. Shaded by large trees, it includes castle architecture, lots of slides, tire swings, rubberized paths, and shaded picnic tables.

SOAR Adventure Tower is a massive, outdoor four-level climbing tower that features 110 different climbing elements for every age and stage, as well as an 18-hole mini golf course and a bar for adults.

Featuring 17 miles of trails, Bowie Nature Park in Fairview is a fantastic place for a hike. The trails wind around multiple ponds and lakes and are mostly flat, making it perfect for family walks. Be sure and download a map before you go. With so many trails, it’s easy to get turned around!

Enjoy a leisurely float down the Harpeth River with Cumberland Kayak & Adventure Company. The outfitters will provide single or double kayaks and shuttle service for your float, which departs from The Park at Harlinsdale Farm’s canoe launch.

Rent canoes, kayaks, or stand-up paddleboards from Paddle Dog and spend an hour paddling around Westhaven Lake. This is a great opportunity to teach your kids how to kayak in a relaxed environment.

EXCITING EXPERIENCES

In the heart of downtown Franklin, the historic Franklin Theatre always has plenty of family-friendly movies and live shows on its schedule. You’ll find everything here from children’s theater performances to magicians and dancers to classic family films.

Rabbit Hole VR offers a virtual gaming experience your entire family will love. The 6,000 square foot virtual reality arcade has both arcade game sessions for 1-12 players and escape games for two players or four players. Ages 8 and up are welcome to come and play!

Franklin’s history comes alive on a guided children’s tour with Franklin on Foot. The 90-minute tour was created in collaboration with The Heritage Foundation, so it’s both entertaining and educational!

Some of the region’s best farm experiences can be found right here in Williamson County. Book a tour at Noble Springs Dairy to cuddle baby goats and learn how cheese is made, or visit Mistletoe Farm for an encounter with the adorable alpacas.

Teach your older children about the Battle of Franklin and the Civil War as a whole with a tour at Carnton, where they’ll learn how the battle affected the lives of the people who lived there and saw it all happen. If they’re intrigued, continue the story at Carter House and Lotz House

You won’t regret making room for a scenic drive in your itinerary. Whether you want to spend an hour absorbing Williamson County’s natural beauty or make a day of it, here are six stunning scenic drives guaranteed to enchant.

OLD NATCHEZ TRACE

For a short, scenic drive that’s truly lovely, head down Old Natchez Trace in Franklin. This beloved four-mile road is one of Williamson County’s best-kept secrets; a drive down it, particularly at sunset, won’t soon be forgotten. The narrow road beside the Harpeth River dates back to the early 1800s and follows the original Natchez Trace, a trade route used by Mississippian Native Americans for centuries. Today, you’ll still see plenty of remnants from the past along the road, including historic homes and structures, stone walls built by enslaved people in the 1800s, and a marker denoting the original location of Old Town, a highly developed Native American society that flourished here between 900 and 1450 A.D.

If the day’s a hot one, check Google Maps for the Harpeth River Rope Swing location, located just off the Trace. It’s a popular place for families to cool off in the summertime.

31A

Route 31A includes charming countryside views and plenty of exciting roadside stops that will satisfy everyone in your party. You’ll want to take this road when you visit historic downtown Nolensville, a fantastic place to spend a few hours shopping and enjoying a Southern-inspired lunch or dinner. The historic 31A Trail will also take you to Arrington Vineyards, considered to be one of the most beautiful picnic spots in the region, as well as the Mill Creek Brewing Co. and Morning Glory Orchard

FRANKLIN TO THOMPSON’S STATION

Take Highway 31 from Franklin to nearby Thompson’s Station to enjoy this scenic drive. Within minutes, you’ll leave the city behind and encounter sprawling farms and gentle green hills that have inspired many a country music songwriter over the years. End your drive at Preservation Park for a walk on a trail that takes you up to the top of a Sound of Music-style hill with 360-degree views of the countryside. Once you’ve burned off some energy, have a bite in nearby Spring Hill. A few favorite options include Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint and Big Bad Breakfast—two local eateries joined together by a light-filled dining atrium.

Want to go a little farther? Continue on Highway 31 from Thompson’s Station to Pulltight Hill Road in College Grove with an overlook offering another glorious view of your surroundings.

BIG EAST FORK ROAD

This road is a local secret that almost no one knows about. Williamson County’s Big East Fork Road is a breathtakingly beautiful country road that will have you stopping for pictures every chance you get. You’ll pass grazing cattle, an old covered bridge, the lovely East Fork Creek, and charming farmhouses as you wind your way through the emerald hills surrounding the Natchez Trace Parkway, as well as points of interest that beg to be researched, like Graveyard Hollow, Tobacco Patch Hollow, Big Ivey Hollow, and more. Look out for wildlife as you drive—you’re likely to see wild turkeys, deer, raccoons, coyotes, and more. Stay on the road when it crosses under the Natchez Trace Parkway and becomes Stillhouse Hollow Road, and you’ll eventually end up at Highway 46.

NATCHEZ TRACE PARKWAY

Did you know one of the most popular scenic drives in the U.S. runs right through Franklin? The Natchez Trace Parkway is a federally protected, 444-mile road that stretches from Nashville to Natchez, Mississippi, and the scenery on either side of this two-lane road is spectacular. Hop on the parkway at Highway 96 in Franklin and you’ll see the award-winning Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge, famous for its breathtaking views of Franklin’s famous countryside. Just beyond the bridge, you’ll find Timberland Park, a favorite with locals for its hiking trails. The 2.5-mile Big East Fork Reserve Trail is a special favorite here. Ask for a map at the park’s visitor center to find it. A fterward, continue on down the parkway for a few minutes or a few hours—you’ll find plenty to do along the way, including an exit that takes you into Leiper’s Fork, two waterfalls, and the historic Gordon House, one of only two remaining structures that stood when this road was originally traveled by horses and wagons.

Whether you prefer hiking, bicycling, fishing, or kayaking, Franklin has outdoor activities for every age and skill level. Here are some fun-filled ways to enjoy a memorable outdoor adventure during your visit.

HIKING

Timberland Park: Located on the Natchez Trace Parkway just past the Highway 96 entrance ramp, Timberland Park offers more than three miles of secluded trails through lush forests and meadows. Each of the 10 trails offers a variety of difficulty for all hiking levels, including an ADA accessible trail.

Preservation Park: This bucolic 200-acre park in Thompson’s Station is a little-known Tennessee treasure. It’s also the site of the Civil War’s Battle of Thompson’s Station. Take the 3.4-mile Battlefield Trail through serene pastures up to the top of a massive grassy hill with stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside. Continue on the Depot Trail to see the local dog park and community garden!

Marcelle Vivrette Smith Park: This lovely, lush park has nine miles of mostly forested hiking trails, as well as a paved multi-use trail that connects to Brentwood’s extensive greenway trail system. You’ll also find the stunning and historic Ravenswood Mansion here, dating back to 1825.

Owl’s Hill Nature Sanctuary: Tucked away in the hills of Brentwood, Owl’s Hill Nature Sanctuary is a fantastic option both for hiking and learning about wildlife. You’ll find six different trails here for new and seasoned hikers. Expect to see plenty of whimsical surprises along the paths. On November 30, 1864, the bloody Battle of Franklin left more than 10,000 American soldier casualties and changed the town forever. The effects of the battle can still be seen throughout Franklin, and each year thousands of visitors come to learn more about the fateful day that marked a devastating loss for the Confederate Army and helped determine the course of the Civil War.

Tours at Franklin’s historic homes, including Carnton, Carter House, and Lotz House, plus Rippa Villa in Spring Hill, tell the story of the battle from the perspective of the people who lived here, lost loved ones, and tended to wounded soldiers after the battle was over. Markers at Franklin’s local parks tell of the events that happened on that spot 150 years ago, and walking tours take a deep dive into the battle’s impact on the city and its residents.

But there’s much more to Franklin’s history than the Civil War, and until recently, it was a story that seldom was told. The history of Franklin’s African American residents includes enslavement, brutality, lynching, and, ultimately, survival against the odds. Local residents now are working with city leaders to make sure that part of Franklin’s history is told as well. The project has become known as “The Fuller Story.”
