SCENIC ROUTE
ROAD TRIP GUIDE
3 HIP & HISTORIC SCENIC BYWAYS
Escape
THE HISTORIC NATIONAL ROAD
Here, the journey is the destination. Carved through forests, mountains and rivers, it was the marvel of its age. It stoked the dreams of untold thousands who followed this macadam and cobblestone ribbon into the American frontier. Begun in 1811 to carry settlers and trade from the great capital of Baltimore into the then-wilds of Illinois, it took four decades to complete. Through city and town, iconic history and welcoming present, trace a route once run by horse drawn wagons and coaches.
THE ANTIETAM CAMPAIGN
The “Bloodiest Single-day of Battle” of the Civil War took place at Antietam, near Sharpsburg. Park living history programs at Antietam National Battlefield provide a glimpse into the lives of Civil War soldiers. Learn about Civil War medicine at the Pry House Museum. Annual events include various living history events in September and December’s Antietam Memorial Illumination, with 23,110 lights placed along a five-mile driving route.
THE C&O CANAL SCENIC BYWAY
Originally built to move goods from Washington, DC to the West, the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal is now a hub of recreational activity, with hiking, biking, bird watching, horse-back riding and more. Williamsport, MD is its geographical center, and visitors here can experience the Canal first-hand with ranger-led towpath tours. Stay at a Lock House to experience life as it was “back in the day” and scarf up a healthy lunch at Lotus Moon Café while there. In Hancock, MD, visitors can pick up the Rail Trail, a paved portion that runs alongside the towpath, to Fort Frederick State Park. But first, grab some pie at the Blue Goose Fruit Market & Bakery!

ROAP TRIP GUIDE ROAD TRIP
TOP 5 SCENIC VISTAS
HIKE TO NEW HEIGHTS
The Best View is YOURS in Washington County!
Our iconic scenic overlooks provide some of the most breathtaking vistas in the Mid Atlantic. Some are easy to get to, some are the payoff for a moderate to difficult hike. All are near quaint small towns that offer great dining, shopping, hiking gear and more.
Know Before You Go! We encourage you to check information on weather and in-depth trail conditions via the Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources website and AllTrails.com.
ANNAPOLIS ROCK
Located along Maryland’s Appalachian Trail (A.T.), at an elevation of 1,700’ this hike is moderately strenuous with some steep inclines and non-level footing. A 2.2 mile hike, this is a popular spot for both hikers and rock climbers, and the gorgeous vista includes a westward view of Greenbrier Lake and the Cumberland Valley. If you are still more ambitious, continue north on the A.T. one mile to Black Rock, which also offers a similar view.
>> Access Point: Parking lot on Route 40, onequarter mile east of Greenbrier State Park. Follow blue blazed trail from the parking lot to white blazed A.T. signs. Turn right to go north on A.T. Return the same way to parking area. Check website for parking fees and other info.
>> Best Time to Go: Mid-week hikes are the best! Parking is limited and becomes very crowded on weekends and holidays.
HIGH ROCK
Also located along the A.T., High Rock Overlook is part of Pen Mar Park, and is located on Mount Quirauk, along the Mason Dixon Line. With an elevation of 1,400’, this site is easy to get to via car. There are two ways to view this overlook; one is from a covered pavilion in the park, and the second is ¼ mile drive to the end of Pen Mar High Road. There visitors can sit atop a high rock outcropping to soak in the view. This scenic vista gives a northern view into Pennsylvania.
>> Access Point: Pen Mar High Rock Rd., 11400 Pen Mar High Rock Rd., Smithsburg, Maryland, 21783. Parking is free.
>> Best Time To Go: Busier on weekends. The Pen Mar park pavilion has festive musical entertainment with dancing on Sunday afternoons.
MARYLAND HEIGHTS
Along the Appalachian Trail is Maryland Heights Overlook, and here hikers can see the most famous view of the town of Harper’s Ferry, in Harper’s Ferry National Historic Park. Surrounded by the Potomac and the Shenandoah Rivers, the payoff for this moderate to strenuous hike is one the very best. The trail is 4-6 miles round trip, depending on which access point is selected.
>> Access Points: Park at the Visitor Center parking area in Harper’s Ferry, WV, and use the park’s free shuttle system or the Visitor Center to Lower Town Trail to access the trail from Lower Town. Check website for fees to enter the park and for parking, maps, and more information. https://rb.gy/cwbl2d
>> Best Time to Go: Mid-week is less crowded, so we recommend a Monday-Friday visit.
WASHINGTON MONUMENT STATE PARK
Located atop South Mountain, along the Appalachian Trail, Washington Monument State Park is named for the first completed monument dedicated to the memory of George Washington. The monument is a 40’ rugged stone tower that was initially erected by the citizens of Boonsboro in 1827, sitting at 1,600’ elevation. The park is an ideal site for spotting migratory birds such as hawks, eagles and falcons, especially in mid-September. Stop by the park office or museum to learn more about the first major Civil War battle fought in Maryland. After, take the short hike up to the monument. This is a fairly easy hike for hikers and non-hikers at 3 miles round trip.
>> Access Point: Washington Monument State Park, 6620 Zittlestown Road, Middletown MD 21769. Park in the main lot, access the trail from the marked entry point.
>> Best Time To Go: There are rangers and docents who can talk about the historical aspects of the park on weekends. It is less crowded during the week.
SIDELING HILL CREEK STATE PARK –POTOMAC RIVER OVERLOOK
A highway stop, no hiking is required to see this amazing area. When the highway was under construction, it was determined that a cut through the mountain rather than to building over it was
more advantageous. According to the MD Geological Survey website, “One of the best rock exposures in Maryland and indeed in the entire northeastern United States is located approximately 6 miles west of Hancock where Interstate 68 cuts through Sideling Hill. Almost 810 feet of strata in a tightly folded syncline are exposed in this road cut.” Sideling Hill is a geographic marvel, and there is a state welcome center with restrooms and brochures available. With 865 acres of mountainous forest land, the Potomac River Overlook provides a majestic view of the Potomac River Valley.
>> Access Point: Route 68 West, Mile Marker 74, 11110 Ziegler Road SE, Hancock, MD 21750
>> Best Time To Go: Anytime – park is open during daylight hours.

CREEKS & RIVERS
ANTIETAM CREEK WATER TRAIL
A tributary to the Potomac River, Antietam Creek offers year-round paddling for those who want a cold water winter trip or just a serene summer time paddle experience. The Antietam Creek Water Trail identifies access points and float times to help boaters plan trips on this iconic waterway. Best floats occur when the river gauge reads 3.4 ft. With 12 places to launch, visit the online map for additional resources and information to plan your adventure. Click on the link to view the story map of the trail.
CONOCOCHEAGUE CREEK
The Conococheague Creek (aka the Jig) is a tributary of the Potomac River. It originates near Chambersburg, PA, and crosses under the old C&O Canal aqueduct near Williamsport, Maryland, and then into the Potomac River. It is 80 miles long, with 23 miles in Washington County. The word “Conococheague” is translated from a Delaware Native American tribe, Unami-Lenapi term, òk’chaxk’hanna, which means “many-turns-river.”
We recommend these locations:
The boat ramp in Williamsport is just upstream from its confluence with the Potomac River, with plenty of parking and picnic tables.
River Bottom Park West Salisbury St., Williamsport, MD 21795
To Paddle the Jig near Clear Spring: 12360 Earth Care Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740
Parking is on left hand side of the landfill, prior to crossing the Conococheague Creek.
POTOMAC RIVER
Also known as the “Nations River” because of its prominent place in history, the Potomac River offers many opportunities for boating, kayaking, and more. There are white water locations, and more calm locations.
LAKES
For beginner paddlers, we recommend these lakes and ponds for ease of input and paddling. They offer lovely mountain views and calm serene waters that are easier to navigate.
BIG POOL AT FORT FREDERICK STATE PARK
During the C&O Canal days of operations, this 1.5 miles long pool was a convenient turning point for canal boats. It is a natural depression that was filled with water during C&O Canal construction, within Fort Frederick State Park. There is a boat ramp, gas motors are prohibited.
Fort Frederick State Park, 11100 Fort Frederick Road, Big Pool MD 21711
BLAIR’S VALLEY LAKE AT INDIAN SPRINGS WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA
Paddle your way around the lake and the songbirds fill the air with color and sound all year long. Visitors may catch a glimpse of white-tailed deer enjoying an evening snack in the farm fields maintained to help feed the animals. In the spring, a hollow drumming fills the forest as ruffed grouse announce their territories and breeding condition.
Blair’s Valley Lake, Blairs Valley Rd, Clear Spring, MD 21722
GREENBRIER STATE PARK
For families, Greenbrier State Park is the ideal place to camp, picnic, put your kayak in the lake and soak in the great outdoors. The 42-acre man-made freshwater lake and white sandy beach draw many visitors who enjoy swimming, canoeing, boating and fishing.

The Underground Railroad in Hagerstown
From the 1740s through the Civil War era, slavery was part of life in Washington County. In 1820, about 14% of the county’s population, or 3,200 people, were enslaved. When the Civil War broke out, almost 1,500 people were still enslaved in the county. Slavery was finally abolished in Maryland in November 1864.
Hagerstown and Washington County are rich in significant and fascinating Black history sites.
Over the long period of slavery, many Washington Countians fled from bondage. Escapes were common, though it’s impossible to know how often they succeeded. Most of the help that freedom-seekers received locally was from free people of color.
Existing mainly in Pennsylvania and other northern states, a network of activists known as the Underground Railroad helped people escape from slavery to safety. To reach the organized Underground Railroad, a freedom-seeker from Maryland or Virginia usually had to cross the Mason-Dixon Line (the Pennsylvania State Line) first. At times the Underground Railroad did stretch into Western Maryland.
