While it may be quiet on the prairie, it’s anything but at Klipsch Music Center in Noblesville (Indiana’s largest and one of the nation’s finest outdoor music venues), where on any given weekend you’ll find more than 20,000 people jamming to the live music of their favorite artists. Nothing says charm more than a bustling courthouse square. You’ll find that and a whole lot more in Noblesville with its square surrounded by locally owned boutiques, antique shops, cafés and an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. At the center of it all is a historic courthouse and restored sheriff’s residence and jail, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Even though Carmel’s Center for the Performing Arts has been open just three years, it already has gained national attention for having some of the finest stages in the world and playing host to the globe’s most gifted performers, all under the direction of the five-time Grammynominated entertainer Michael Feinstein. The venue, which includes The Palladium, Tarkington Theater and Center’s Show Studio, is in the heart of the bustling Carmel Arts & Design District, where it’s just as common to see working artists in studios as it is to see someone hula hooping along the pedestrian Monon Trail.

A Taste of Hamilton County When you’re looking for something to tempt your taste buds, you don’t need to travel far. In Hamilton County, you’ll find Hoosier favorites (see Tenderloin Trail pg. 19), cute cafés, farm-to-fork eateries, and chefs who like to mix things up. Among them is Richelle Rider, chef and proprietor, along with husband Kevin “Woody” Rider, of divvy. Sip. Savor. Share. When you see “Ooey, gooey goodness” on the menu, you know this is not your typical Midwestern fare. That was the intent when the couple opened this small plate, over 21 restaurant. The duo is not new to the restaurant scene. They also own Woody’s Library Restaurant inside the historic 1913 Andrew Carnegie Library on Carmel’s Main Street.

Delullo’s

Italian Farm-to-Fork Style New to the Hamilton County restaurant scene is Delullo’s Trattoria in Atlanta, which specializes in, local and organic, hearty Italian specialties, inside an 1895 building that feels as authentic as the food. On the way to dinner, wind your way through Hamilton County back roads where you’ll find artists’ studios along the Nickel Plate Art Trail or the Indiana Glass Trail. After dinner, catch live entertainment at the Atlanta Music Hall on Saturdays and second and fourth Wednesdays.

Bub’s Burgers & Ice Cream

While Woody’s offers a more traditional menu, divvy’s menu has 93 items, all created to sip, share and savor, hence its divvy’s name. The same concept goes for the bar, where diners may sample a variety of brews (many of them local) and wines, which also are served by the glass, carafe or by the bottle. Also introduced its own special divvy bourbon, which is a blend of the Kentucky artisan bourbon Angel’s Envy. divvy

Matteo’s Ristorante Italiano

Authentic Italian There’s no escaping the smells of pungent garlic, Bolognese sauce and fresh-baked bread wafting from Matteo’s Ristorante Italiano on Noblesville’s downtown square. Everything here is homemade and offers the vibrant flavors of owner and Chef Matteo DiRosa’s home in Salerno, Italy.

DiRosa and his wife, Emily Herner, opened Matteo’s in 2003, and quickly the accolades began pouring in, first getting the honor of the best lasagna in the Indy area, and then listed as one of the best dining spots, hitting high marks for its authentic food, extensive wine list, and affordability.

Named one of the top 25 restaurants within metropolitan Indianapolis, Matteo’s serves up fresh, authentic Italian in a setting fitting any piazza. It’s just the place to sneak away for a romantic dinner, or just as easily, it welcomes diners before and after special events on the Downtown Square.

The Local

Going Local The Local in Westfield specializes in – well – being local. That means taking advantage of fresh produce, meats, cheeses and locally crafted ales, lagers and cocktails. The restaurant is on its way to becoming the first independently owned restaurant in Indiana to earn “green” certification. Owners Chef Craig Baker and Derek Means purchase products from more than 20 local growers and food artisans in Hamilton County and throughout the region, such as sauces and mustard from Steve and Anita Spencer’s farm in Sheridan or elk from Carley Elk Farm in Atlanta, where visitors can tour the farm. The Local’s mission is to be socially and environmentally responsible serving great-tasting, fresh foods that often can be a little edgy. If frog legs are in season, and Baker can buy them locally, chances are he’ll put them on the menu, which changes at least twice a month. Not to worry, there are plenty of less exotic items on the menu, including homemade pot pies and stews. The kids almost always go for tater tots, which come plain or Cajun Style.

There’s nothing like a juicy tomato or sweet, plump blueberries plucked right from the vine. Fresh is in, and Hamilton County has plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and farm-raised meats and eggs ripe for the picking at weekly farmers’ markets in Carmel, Fishers, and Noblesville. In addition to locally grown foods, you’ll find salsas, cheese, wines and prepared foods such as walking waffles, egg rolls and mouthwatering baked goods. If you can’t wait until the weekend, you can pick your own apples at Stuckey Farm in Sheridan, which has more than 4,000 trees and 27 different varieties. A trip to Stuckey Farm is not complete without an apple cider slushy, just as fall isn’t complete without a popular gourmet caramel apple from Conner Prairie’s Apple Store. Volunteers hand dip more than 14,000 apples each season. Of course, you don’t need to wait until fall to satisfy that sweet tooth. As the name indicates, the crust, middle and all comes ready-to-eat in a jar. Where you’ll find the best sweet treats is a matter of taste. Some will send you north along Ind. 19 in Cicero to Sugarbean Cupcakes, which has a cute tea room and bakery inside a turn-of-the-century Victorian house. At Rosie’s, along the courthouse square in Noblesville, you can’t go wrong with the homemade coconut cake or gooey butter cookies. Maybe to some, pizza should be reserved for pepperoni and sausage, but at Rockstone Pizzeria Pub in Fishers, Nutella dessert pizza has become a crowd-pleaser, as are the homemade ding-dongs at Blu Moon Café in Carmel. Regardless of which path you choose, you’ll find plenty of tempting treats all around Hamilton County.
