A day or two out in Hampshire can be crafted to suit everyone’s expectations: walk in the footsteps of Jane Austen in Winchester and Chawton, discover the marine heritage of Southampton and naval experiences of Portsmouth. Key Events Across the County Jane Austen is one of England’s most celebrated and greatest novelists, 2017 is the 200th Anniversary of her death. Jane was born and lived most of her life in Hampshire and was inspired by the county for many of her novels. Many places in Hampshire are associated with Jane Austen which means Hampshire is the ideal destination for visitors who are looking to discover more about Jane’s life. Visit the village of Steventon, North Hampshire where Jane lived and spent the first 25 years of her life, later moving to Southampton with her mother and sister. Visit the village of Chawton and Jane Austen’s house where she is known to have written her greatest novels. After becoming ill Jane then moved to a house in College Street, Winchester where she passed away and is now laid to rest at Winchester Cathedral where you can visit her grave.

Located in the city centre, this historic National Trust owned mill is a surviving example of an urban working corn mill, powered by the fast-flowing River Itchen. It features hands-on experiences and there is the rare opportunity to see the mill’s unique inhabitants – otters.

Jane Austen’s Hampshire Follow in the footsteps of Hampshire author Jane Austen with a visit to her former home, now an intimate museum in east Hampshire. Spend time exploring the rooms in which she used to live and write and see some of the fascinating artefacts she once owned.

New Forest Delights
