VISITHUTCH.COM
While you’re in town visiting, we hope you notice our new Hutchinson flag! A grassroots effort began in 2018 to design a flag using community input and specific guidelines. The result, chosen by a selection committee from more than 50 designs, was the white, gold and blue flag with a gold compass rose. The white resembles the salt industry that grew the city in the early 20th century; gold is for agriculture and blue for open skies in a geographically flat area that has vast sunrises and sunsets. The eight-point star, or compass rose, has to do with Hutchinson’s central location. It also fits with the state motto — Ad Astra Per Aspera or “to the stars through difficulty” — along with the different perspectives and cultural heritages that call Hutchinson home.

Kansas State Fair | September 6-15 2000 N Poplar St. kansasstatefair.com | 620.669.3600
In 1913, Henry Ford started the assembly line and the Panama Canal was built. Charlie Chaplin began his film career and The New York World invented the crossword puzzle. And, for one week in September that year, residents from across Kansas descended on Hutchinson to open the state’s first official Kansas State Fair. A lot has changed in 106 years. But one thing remains the same. The Kansas State Fair is still a place to celebrate everything Kansas—from its people, its industry, its agriculture, its education, its tourism and so much more. Today, the Kansas State Fair is the largest fair in the state, drawing about 330,000 people in 2018. It continues to be a family tradition filled with nostalgia: rides, slides, livestock, concerts, commercial exhibits, contests and epic Fair food of all things fried and on a stick. It’s still the place to see the famous butter sculpture, the largest pumpkin and watermelon, the Ye Old Mill, the champion steer and Governor’s Cookie Jar. The Fair offers tremendous opportunities for commerce, about 700 vendors. Moreover, nearly 40,000 adults and youth enter contests. For instance, the Kansas State Fair’s Grand Drive, the state’s largest youth livestock competition, will celebrate 20 years in 2019. The Fair is also about education. More than 12,000 youth come to the Fair each year to learn more about agriculture, art, science and math. Also, 105 high school marching bands perform at the Fair, representing 75 percent of Kansas counties. Yet, beyond the 10-days of the Fair, the fairgrounds operate as a premier event and expo center. Each year, the fairgrounds plays host to national livestock shows, RV rallies, serves as a wedding venue, along with a variety of other events. For more information about the 2019 Kansas State Fair, slated for Sept. 6-15, and non-fair facility rentals, visit www.kansasstatefair.com

Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. | Sunday 1 p.m.-5 p.m. | Closed Mondays except for Holidays Strataca has celebrated 11 years of taking visitors 650 feet underground into a working salt mine. Another option is the salt safari – a guided experience into not-so-explored parts of the mine. Unusual formations are pointed out by trained guides. Exhibits on the self-guided museum tour underground include heavy equipment, dynamite displays and other items that are a window into another time. Cars and a tractor, as well as the mining equipment illustrate the ingenuity that was required. Items once abandoned as trash are now fascinating displays. Museum exhibits include some of the unusual items stored underground by Underground Vaults and Storage. The climate is perfect for safe storage and this company preserves items from every state and many foreign countries. On display are costumes from Hollywood blockbusters. One of the Eight Wonders of Kansas, Strataca is the only attraction of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. Visit underkansas.org for more information or to make a reservation.

In 2015, TECH purchased the former Midwest Feed Building and moved their Adult Life Skills (ALS) program to this location. With the early success of the art program, TECH had the vision for an on—site art studio in the unused portion of the building, but needed to raise the funds before completing this remodel project. Through fundraising efforts, which included a benefit concert featuring Suzy Bogguss, as well as a generous gift from the Bobby Megli Estate, the TECH Art Studio quickly became a reality in the newly revitalized Wiley Plaza Building. Hours are Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. — 5 p.m.
The museum’s impressive collection includes: photographs and archival materials, household items, artifacts of farming and industry. With more than 38,000 pieces, the collection of artifacts is substantial and continues to grow. The museum also features the Oodleplex, an interactive, historical and fun children’s area. Based on traditional pioneer themes, the Oodleplex features a one room school house, a general store, a costume shop, a telephone booth, a Native American setting and much more. While there is a lot to view inside, be sure to check out the museum’s grounds, which offer a further glimpse into the past.

Soldiers and Sailors Memorial First Avenue and Walnut Street
The memorial, constructed in 1918 and 1919, combines two bronze cannons with a 41-foot white granite monument. It was designed by Hugh Price and built by Hutchinson Monument Works. It is a Grand Army of Republic commemorative Civil War monument, and one of only three multi-figure memorials in Kansas, combining a statue of Abraham Lincoln with statues of a sailor, an artilleryman, an infantryman and a cavalryman, who represent the four branches of the Union Army. Even more significant, though, is that the cannons flanking the monument are actually from the Confederate Army. One of the cannons is one of only eight remaining. The other is one of a kind. This unique attraction is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This 1,123 acre state park was established in 1974. For the first 40 years, the park was maintained as a natural sand hill park with a trail system of 15 miles. Hiking is allowed on all trails and horseback riding is allowed on two-thirds of the trails. A campground has been established with 64 utility sites; 44 sites have water, sewer and electricity; 20 sites have just water and electricity. All sites have 50 amp service; 14 sites have horse pens made up of two 12’ X 12’ pens. These 14 sites are Prime Sites with an additional $2/day fee. Twenty of the sites have concrete camping pads and living areas. All sites include a fire ring, lantern stand, picnic table and upright covered grills. A four-unit family shower building/restroom is on site, and cabins also are on the list for Sand Hills. The campground surrounds a five-acre pond stocked with mainly channel catfish.
