Step inside the Cosmosphere, a Smithsonian-affiliated museum and science education center, where the lobby explodes with an SR-71 Blackbird spy plane! Guests from all over the world come to glimpse at some of the unique artifacts including the largest collection of Russian space artifacts outside of Moscow. The flown Gemini X spacecraft and the actual Apollo 13 command module, Odyssey, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in April, are also favorites. Other notable pieces include the V-1 and V-2 rockets, a flight-ready back-up Sputnik and an actual Moon rock brought home from the first Moon landing by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. In addition, visitors can see rocket science brought to life with a bang in Dr. Goddard’s Lab, see beautifully filmed documentaries in amazing scale in a 4K digital dome theater, and gain new insight into the universe in the Cosmosphere’s state-of-the-art Planetarium.

Hedrick Exotic Animal Farm

Venture 650 ft. deep below the earth’s surface at Strataca, located in an active salt mine. As the only attraction of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, guests are able to explore the mine by taking a train ride through one of the largest salt deposits in the world. Or take part in the Salt Safari – a guided experience into not-so-explored parts of the mine where unusual formations are pointed out by trained guides. Exhibits on the self-guided museum tour underground include heavy equipment, dynamite displays and other items that are a window into another time. Cars and a tractor, as well as the mining equipment, illustrate the ingenuity that was required. Items once abandoned as trash are now fascinating displays.

FAMILY FUN

Grab your bowling shoes and load up the family! The Alley Indoor Entertainment complex in Hutchinson is a must-see for visitors young and old! The large-scale complex boasts 20 lanes for league and open bowling and six lanes for private parties or drop-in bowlers. Non-bowlers will enjoy the laser-tag area, an arcade area with 80 video games, and the Spin Zone Bumper Cars! Head outdoors for some family fun at Hutch Putt, Hutchinson’s 18-hole miniature golf course. This vibrant course features a ball-in-water shot, a pipe shot, and a boulder arch for added difficulty. For some family bonding time, head over to The Room, where you will work to decipher clues, solve puzzles, and open locks at Hutchinson’s one and only escape room. Get creative and learn something new at one of the many children and young adult programs provided by the Hutchinson Public Library. From the children’s area and Teen Zone to the Library Makerspace, the whole family can enjoy an afternoon of fun!

Whether it is petting a zebra, admiring a kangaroo, riding a camel or observing the ostriches, Hedrick Exotic Animal Farm offers an opportunity to come face-to-face with unusual animals. It’s an animal adventure truly unlike any other in the Midwest. For another animal adventure jump on the Prairie Thunder Railroad and explore the 100 different species that can be found at the Hutchinson Zoo, located in the heart of Carey Park. Enjoy the interactive exhibits designed for children and families including climb-through prairie dog tunnels, fish feeding and a Dino Dig. Surround yourself with the beauty of the great outdoors at Dillon Nature Center, a 100-acre ‘wild arboretum’ designated as a National Urban Wildlife Sanctuary. Discover more than 300 species of woody plants, 200 species of birds, and a large variety of other wildlife along three miles of National Recreation Trails. It includes a spring fed pond stocked with fish, beautiful flower gardens, outdoor sculptures, and a natural children’s playscape area. During the long summer days, cool off at Salt City Splash, Hutchinson’s exclusive water park. There is something for the whole family to enjoy with everything from four pools, including a regulation 50-meter pool with basketball goals, fitness lap lanes and diving boards to slides, large floating toys, and a Tiny Tot Pool.

Discover local and regional masterpieces at the Hutchinson Art Center, featuring a wide variety of gallery exhibits by regional and national artists displaying paintings, sculpture, photography and other art forms. The gallery also offers artwork for sale by many local artists through their gift shop, Consignment Art Gallery, Annual Art Fair in May and Annual Members Art Show in October. Find an all new appreciation for the arts at the Tech Art Gallery and Clayworks. Shop for original paintings, scarves, greeting cards and calendars all done by individuals with disabilities at Tech Art Gallery in Downtown Hutchinson. Then head down Main Street to Midtown Hutchinson to find custom made pottery and jewelry made from individuals of all ages and abilities at the newly opened The Clayworks by Disability Supports. In a new state-of-the-art building, The Clayworks not only features handmade pottery and jewelry, but also includes an art gallery that features regional artists, a culinary kitchen, and local coffee shop. Take a step back into the past at the Reno County Museum as it shares the stories of Reno County through its exhibits featuring transportation, community, business, sports and more. The Museum holds over 100,000 artifacts and is continuously growing. The museum also features the Oodleplex, an interactive, historical and fun childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s area based on traditional pioneer themes with a schoolhouse, general store, costume shop, telephone booth, Native American setting and much more. Looking to do some research of your own? The Hutchinson Public Library has all the resources you need from digitized books and archives to government documents and Kansas Room, filled with genealogical and local history materials. Take a moment to honor those that have sacrificed for our country at the Reno County Veterans Memorial and the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial. The Reno County Veterans Memorial represents the commitment of the citizens of Reno County to honor those who have served in our military. The final phase of this project will be the addition of 14 granite panels displaying the names of over 15,400 Reno County veterans from the Civil War through today. The memorial site also features the flags and emblems of all the branches of service, as well as tribute to the POW/MIA service members. The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial, completed in 1919, is a Grand Army of Republic commemorative Civil War monument and one of only three multi-figure memorials in Kansas, combining a statue of Abraham Lincoln with statues of a sailor, and artilleryman, an infantryman and a cavalry man - representing the four branches of the Union Army.

The 2020 Kansas State Fair kicks off September 11-20, and with the opening of the gates, comes a lot of fond memories. Nothing says so long summer like the Fair. It’s the ultimate celebration of Kansas culture, industry, agriculture, people, communities and, of course, food. It’s a place where all the iconic features of Kansas life – from prized livestock and vegetables to 4-H to music to tractor sales – and everything else in between come together. Today, the Fair is the largest gathering of Kansans in the state, drawing in an average of 340,000 people annually. It continues to be a family tradition mixed with new and exciting thrills. It’s still the place to see the famous butter sculpture, giant pumpkins, grandstand entertainment, the legendary Ye Old Mill and the Governor’s Cookie Jar. The Fair offers tremendous opportunities for commerce with about 700 vendors on display across the Fairgrounds. Plus, more than 40,000 youth and adults enter contests – which represents all 105 Kansas counties. Also, about 14,000 youth come to the Fair each year with Kansas’ Largest Classroom to learn more about agriculture, art, science and math. That includes about 100 high school bands that represent about 75 percent of Kansas counties.

This 7th annual family-friendly event, held in the Meadowlark Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds, is a fan extravaganza of celebrities, artists, writers, creators and vendors involving super-hero, science fiction, anime, fantasy, steampunk, horror, gaming, movies and television, as well as Costume Contests, competitive Car Show and activities for all ages! 14

Every year the Hutchinson Sports Arena plays host to the best men’s junior college basketball teams in the country. Basketball fans from around the country travel the ‘Road to Hutch’ each year and this long-standing event, known widely as ‘The Tournament’, has helped make Hutchinson a sports destination. It consistently features players who go on to play at the major college level, and attracts some of the nation’s top college coaches to town for recruiting. “The Tournament” features the top 24 teams in Division I men’s basketball of the NJCAA. The single-elimination seeded bracket is comprised of 16 District Champions and eight at-large selections. The top eight seeds receive first-round

Every summer the small town of Pretty Prairie hosts a four-day event, attended by thousands of rodeo fans from all over the world. The rodeo, sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), is known as Kansas’ Largest Night Rodeo. The first two nights are considered family nights at the rodeo with free admission for children 12 and under.

Yoder Heritage Day

The NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship is held annually in March at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The first official NJCAA National Championship was in 1948 in Springfield, MO. The event moved to Hutch in 1949, and has been here ever since.

Cheney State Park 12 miles south of Hutchinson

Cheney State Park offers a great weekend getaway with sailing, fishing, boating and a host of other outdoor activities. Cheney Reservoir is a camperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s delight. The Reservoir covers 9,537 surface acres and has 67 miles of shoreline. Its 849-square mile drainage basin encompasses parts of three counties: Reno, Sedgwick and Kingman. Accommodations include: park office, 223 electrical hookup sites (water available), about 400 primitive camp sites, shower houses, marina and much more! Quivira Wildlife Refuge 28 miles west of Hutchinson

Quivira National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1955 to provide and protect vital habitat for migratory waterfowl in the Central Flyway. Its 22,135 acres features rare inland salt marsh and sand prairie. The prairie is considered to be a diverse community of hundreds of species of plants, with many species of mammals, birds, reptiles and other organisms that are prairie-dependent. Roughly 7,000 acres of wetlands hosts thousands of Canada geese, meadowlarks and other migratory birds as they pass through the refuge on their annual migrations.

Sand Hills State Park

A campground has been established with 64 utility sites; 44 sites have water, sewer and electricity; 20 sites have just water and electricity. All sites have 50 amp service; 14 sites have horse pens made up of two 12’ X 12’ pens. These 14 sites are Prime Sites with an additional $2/day fee. Twenty of the sites have concrete camping pads and living areas. All sites include a fire ring, lantern stand, picnic table and upright covered grills. A four-unit family shower building/restroom is on site, and cabins also are on the list for Sand Hills. The campground surrounds a five-acre pond stocked with mainly channel catfish.

This 1,123 acre state park was established in 1974. For the first 40 years, the park was maintained as a natural sand hill park with a trail system of 15 miles. Hiking is allowed on all trails and horseback riding is allowed on two-thirds of the trails.

One of Hutchinson’s newest parks, it encompasses 72 acres and continues to be developed. One unique feature is The Winwoods Enchanted Playground, which is designed to be enjoyed by children of all ages and abilities. The variety of golf courses will definitely delight visitors looking for a day of golf or an entire vacation built around tee times! Prairie Dunes Country Club, the legendary course known for its challenging play as well as its beauty is a gift to the golf world from the Emerson Carey family. The private course has hosted the 2002 U.S. Women’s Open, the 2006 Men’s Senior Open and the 2014 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. It is described by golf legend and honorary member Tom Watson as, “A touch of Scotland in the Land of Oz. Sunflowers instead of heather, oceans of grain instead of the sea.”

Course honors include Golf Digest’s American’s Greatest Golf Courses (#25), Golf week’s Best Classic Courses (#12), Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Courses in the U.S. (#16), Top 100 Courses in the World (#25) and MSN’s 30 Most Beautiful Golf Courses (#25) Carey Park Golf Course offers very reasonable rates and a relaxing atmosphere. Eighteen holes of challenging yet enjoyable golf are found at one of the best municipal courses in the state. Tee times can be made up to a week in advance. A driving range, pro shop, snack bar, club and cart rental are also available. Crazy Horse Sports Club & Golf Course is described as a challenge in a relaxing, picturesque backdrop. The 18-hole championship golf course includes 6,650 yards of golf. The course is cut out of the sand hills and features Zoysia fairways lined with native grass. Tee times at this semi-private course can be made up to a week in advance. With a variety of courses, golfing in Hutchinson is a must for both the casual and avid player. Crazy Horse Golf Course

Disc Golf Looking for the perfect spot to play disc golf in the Hutchinson area where you can show off your skills, incorporate strategy, compete with friends and be in nature? The 18-hole disc golf course at Carey Park winds its way along the park’s outer edge. Set around a fishing lake with a little elevation created by man-made berms, this course is mostly open with a mix of mature and new trees. With a variety of challenges, this course is good for the experienced and amateur alike. The course has concrete tee pads throughout and is considered cart friendly. It plays host to the Salt City Open every August. The newest disc golf course is at Rivers Banks Orchard Park and was developed in 2018 in cooperation with a local group of disc golfers. This course is a moderately wooded technical course with plenty of elevation and challenging holes. It has cement tee pads, multiple pin positions and is considered somewhat cart friendly.

ATHLETIC COMPLEXES Catch a game and cheer on your favorite teams as Hutchinson frequently hosts sports fans and players at one of our many athletic complexes that are home to several state, regional and national events. Home to the NJCAA Division I Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Basketball Championship, the Hutchinson Sports Arena is one of the premier sports venues in Kansas. After a $30 million renovation, the Sports Arena has three full sized auxiliary gyms and can seat over 5,500 in the Main Arena. The Kansas State High School Activities Association has called the Sports Arena home for the 3A Basketball Championship for over 20 years. Other recent events at the Sports Arena include multiple Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball events and the 3A & 4A State Volleyball Championship. The North American Sport Taekwondo Association will host their National Championship for the first time this summer. And the NJCAA DI Volleyball Championship was hosted here from 2017-2019 and will return in 2021 and 2023. Gowans Stadium is among the crown jewels of football facilities in the Midwest. This venue draws a variety of high school and college, state and national football and track championships. The facility includes a state-of-theart, eight-lane track, ample seating capacity, new entrance gates, public restrooms, locker rooms and concession areas. Gowans Stadium also boasts a video board, which enhances the game day experience for fans with instant replays and highlight videos. A modern multi-use facility, the Hutchinson High School Salthawk Activity Center is home to Hutchinson High School basketball, volleyball and wrestling programs. The Hutchinson High School campus features three regulation sized basketball courts and is located directly across the street from the Hutchinson Sports Arena, bringing the total number of courts to seven between the two facilities.

The Salthawk Sports Complex is home to Hutchinson High School soccer teams, Hutchinson Community College soccer teams as well as the Club Azzurri soccer group. The complex has a main stadium field with a new scoreboard and two other regulation-sized fields as well other smaller fields for younger soccer teams to utilize. To the east of the stadium field are two practice baseball fields. Westar/Prairie Ridge Park, the 5-kilometer cross-country course, winds around 200 acres of vacant land between Prairie Hills Middle School and Dillon Nature Center. This course provides a beautiful, scenic trail with a mix of hills and flat areas for joggers and walkers. 32

Featuring seven natural turf fields, Fun Valley Sports Complex spans 35 acres and recently went through nearly $1 million worth of facility improvements, to be completed in the Spring. Fun Valley has hosted more than 40 USSSA world tournaments, 14 USSSA divisional tournaments, 74 USSSA NITâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and currently hosts numerous local and state USSSA baseball and softball tournaments, NBC baseball tournaments, and USA Softball tournaments. The complex includes a large concession and merchandise area, air-conditioned sports bar, upper deck mezzanine, sand volleyball courts and a playground.

A former minor league and semi-pro baseball park, this natural turf field serves as the home field for local baseball teams, including Hutchinson Community College, Hutchinson High School and the Hutchinson Monarchs. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a host site for numerous USSSA and NBC state and local tournaments.

Wheatland Park Ballfield Complex is the newest baseball and softball complex in Reno County. The complex features two baseball and two softball fields, practice batting cages, a brand new concession stand, and is located within walking distance of Buhler High School. The varsity baseball field features the only turf infield in Reno County.

The brand new Haven ball fields feature turf fields, as well as top-notch practice facilities. Haven Public Schools have had great support in maintaining high-quality athletic facilities that focus on the experience of players and fans.

PLEASANTVIEW In July 1883, the families of Abraham Nisly and Christian Bontrager got off at the last stop on the Santa Fe line in Hutchinson, Kansas and established roots. Today, more than 100 years later the descendants of these Amish families still live in Reno County, now called the Pleasantview Community. PRETTY PRAIRIE It may be the rodeo that brings you to town for the first time, but the friendly people and unique brand of Western hospitality keep visitors coming back. You’ll love the fun-filled, family atmosphere of Kansas’ Largest Night Rodeo every July. Enjoy a round of golf at the Links at Pretty Prairie, a challenging 9-hole, links-style golf course with bluegrass fairways and bentgrass greens.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON In 1887, the first salt in this area was discovered in South Hutchinson by the town’s founder, Ben Blanchard. Salt has continued to be an important part of the town’s history. At one time, South Hutchinson was home to 17 salt companies, and still today Morton Salt has a large plant located in South Hutchinson. While in town, stop by to see the Reno County Veterans Memorial and experience the small town atmosphere.

YODER

In 1906, A.M. Switzer plotted the little town of Yoder as a central point for surrounding Amish communities. Though many businesses and homes have moved in around Yoder, the picturesque town has stayed the same size. The town is a quaint mixture of the past and present, as horse buggies are intermingled with cars and trucks. Stroll down the streets in the quiet and quaint community that boasts several unique and timeless treasures in its welcoming stores. Yoder welcomes its visitors to enjoy the simplicity of the past with comforts of the present.

YODER THE QUIET LITTLE TOWN OF YODER

When the town of Yoder was founded by Eli Yoder in 1889 it was considered to be the hub of the surrounding Amish community. Today, Yoder is still considered to be that. Though many businesses and homes have moved in around Yoder, the picturesque town has stayed that same size, and is only 15 minutes away from Hutchinson.

With the emergence of new business, Yoder has prospered, inviting visitors to take a step back in time and enjoy the Amish settlement. The town is a quaint mixture of the past and present, as horse and buggies are intermingled with cars and trucks.
