6000 B.C. | STONE AND BRONZE AGE
The earliest traces of humans in Innherred can be seen at Bøla, where you find Bølareinen, a more than 6000-year-old rock carving. At that time, the sea level was higher, and people hunted and lived off what nature provided. There is also a concentration of large burial grounds in Innherred, and the numerous rich grave findings testify to intense trade with distant lands.
800 - 1500 A.D. | VIKING AGE AND MIDDLE AGES
The Viking Age in Innherred was characterized by powerful chieftains, Norse religion, and blood revenge, culminating in the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030, that changed Norway’s history and laid the foundation for a modern Norway with Christianity and a legal system. Stiklestad National Cultural Centre conveys this story throughout the year.
1940 - 1965 | WORLD WAR II AND POST-WAR PERIOD
In April 1940, 82% of the buildings in the center of Steinkjer were destroyed by German bombers. Throughout the postwar period, a modern and cohesive city rose from the ruins. Steinkjer is now considered one of the country’s most successful and well-preserved reconstruction cities. The city was rebuilt according to plans from “Brente Steders Regulering”, with Sverre Pedersen as the city architect. Many historical buildings are signposted.
In 1965, the new Steinkjer Church opened its doors, marking the conclusion of the reconstruction and post-war period in Innherred.
Based at Gjefsjøen mountain Farm near Lake Gjefsjøen in the Snåsa mountains, Operation Rype was the only mission led by American forces on Norwegian soil during World War II.
Norwegian and American commandos sabotaged railway lines, preventing German reinforcements from reaching the final battles in Europe.
On 7 April 1945, a plane carrying additional personnel and supplies to Gjefsjøen crashed on Plukkutjønnfjellet, killing all 12 on board. In 1949, a memorial was erected at the crash site, where wreckage from the plane can still be seen. The house that served as the OSS Gjefsjøen base is now a museum.
The demolition of the Jørstad Bridge in Snåsa and other sabotage missions involved many local resistance fighters and Allied soldiers in secret operations.
MODERN TIMES | CULTURAL HERITAGE AND TRADITIONS
The agricultural history of Innherred extends far back in time, and through exhibits at Egge Museum, ancient grain production in Steinkjer, and visits to mountain farms in Snåsa, you can learn more about how people in Innherred put food on the table in the past. In the 1700s and 1800s, mountain farming was essential in Snåsa, with around 300 mountain farms in the village during the summer. Today, 10-15 mountain farms are open to the public every summer.
The folk costume collection at Bjerkem and Bunadsaum in Inderøy have, through many generations, done significant work in collecting and documenting old clothing and costume traditions from Innherred. Today, these traditions are expressed through reconstructed bunads (Bjerkem) and the Nord-Trønderbunad, Fjellbygd-bunad and Kvardag-bunad (Bunadsaum).
The Sami population in Innherred, like in the rest of the country, has experienced abuses through the assimilation process, loss of land, language, and culture. Saemien Sijte in Snåsa is now a hub for South Saami culture and language, with varied exhibitions and skilled communicators who tell the story.

Innherred is known to many for its very special dish: Sodd. A traditional dish made according to an ancient recipe using pure ingredients. It has been a dish for important gatherings for generations. Today, the food from Innherred is so much more than just Sodd, but one thing remains the same: the quality!
The Trondheimsfjorden is Norway’s third-longest fjord. It faces south, and in combination with the Gulf Stream, it provides excellent conditions for growth in and around the fjord. You can find a rich variety of fish species here, and in the undulating landscape, agriculture is a significant occupation.
During the last ice age, deposits from the glacier formed large mounds around the fjord, which today constitute a valuable resource for food production. Rich in minerals such as calcium, these deposits promote strong growth, and long, bright summer nights impart flavour and sweetness to all the berries and fruits grown here.
Terroir Innherred
When the French term “terroir” is combined with Innherred, it denotes the qualities and flavours of the products produced here in Innherred.
These qualities can all be traced back to our culture, production methods, and our natural surroundings: the clean air, the long bright summer nights, the land that emerged from the sea, and our longstanding agricultural traditions. The combination of all these factors imparts its unique character to the food produced here.

South Sámi culture is rich in history, mythology, and natural knowledge, closely intertwined with reindeer herding. In Innherred, there are many traces of South Sámi influence, and today, Snåsa/Snåase is a focal point in preserving South Sámi culture.
The Sami culture has a total of 8 seasons, all originating from the Sami culture’s proximity to and fundamental respect for nature. These seasons are linked to the reindeer’s migration and the tasks of reindeer herders throughout the year. The 8 seasons are as follows: gïjre-daelvie (spring-winter), gïjre (spring), gïjre-giesie (early summer), giesie (summer), tjahktje-giesie (late summer), tjahktje (autumn), tjahktje-daelvie (autumn-winter), and daelvie (winter).
Innherred is a core area for reindeer herding with five yearround reindeer grazing districts. Each season, reindeer are moved between summer and winter pastures, with timing varying based on weather and snow conditions. During migration and the calving period in spring, it is essential to be considerate of the reindeer if you are out hiking. Avoid approaching the reindeer and keep dogs on a leash!

SOUTH SÁMI TRACES THROUGH INNHERRED

Låarte-Skæhkere
The Blåfjella–Skjækerfjella/Låarte-Skæhkere National Park is a significant South Sámi area that Sámi families have utilised for centuries. Those who know what to look for can still see remnants of old settlements, gathering places, burial sites, and sacred locations. Within the national park, two reindeer grazing districts are located: Skjækerfjell Reindeer Grazing District and Luru Reindeer Grazing District.
In Verdal there are numerous traces of Sámi activity. If you follow the cultural trail from Sul up to Brenntjønna, along the DNT trail leading to Meråker, you traverse a Sámi landscape and a vital settlement area for the Sámi people until 1976.
There have been several rural Sami settlements in Innherred throughout history. An example of this can be found in Volhaugen, where there has been a Sami settlement since the 17th century. At Leklemvatnet, on the border between Verdal and Inderøy, there was one such Sami settlement - Finnheimen.
Finnheimen in Inderøy was an old Sami settlement from 1865 - 1916. The Sami had reindeer and farmed here and the last resident, Ole Liljestrand, moved to Fleskhus in Verdal in 1916. Finnheimen is a 1.8 km walk from the car park, the trail is well marked and can be found on ut.no.

Inderøy municipality
Inderøy is beautifully situated at the innermost part of Trondheimsfjorden. The municipality comprises the large peninsula of Inderøy, Røra on the east side of the fjord, and Mosvik on the Fosen Peninsula on the other side of Skarnsundet. Agriculture, forestry, and cultural activities thrive and play a significant role in the community.
NORWAYS MOST ATTRACTIVE TOWN
In 2020, Straumen was honoured as Norway’s most attractive locality, winning the Attractive City Award. Straumen, according to the jury, is a role model for other places because they use what they have, refine it, and create a strong and clear identity for the place.
Inderøy has one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes in Norway, which, along with the sea and special light, has inspired artists and authors for hundreds of years.
Inderøy is centrally located, with both Trondheim and Namdalen within a 1.5-hour drive. This lush peninsula features an extensive coastline, well-maintained outdoor areas, and a rich history. Additionally, Inderøy is in close proximity to Værnes airport, railway, and the E6 motor way passes through the municipality.
Straumen, the municipal centre, takes its name from one of the country’s strongest tidal currents, which runs through the narrow neck of water between the Trondheimfjorden and the Borgenfjorden.
Amidst the wooden houses in Straumen, you’ll discover galleries, cafes, and charming niche shops. The small red-painted house Klokkarstu (which houses the second-hand shop and cafe Kjerringa me ‘Straumen), Nils Aas Kunstverksted, Rødbrygga restaurant, Galleri Mitsel, Inderøy Landhandleri, Inderøy Slakteri, Marens Bakeri, and
Jostu Lysstøperi are all located here.
On the other side of the Skarnsund Bridge, you’ll find Selsethloftet and the Landhandelmuseet in the old trading post Venneshamn in Framverran. The 120 years of continuous store operation in Venneshamn ceased in 2008. Today, the old store has been restored, featuring an open café and occasional concerts during the summer months.
Mosvik village includes Mosvik Brygge, Jekta Fjordstue, a hairdresser, and a grocery store. Mosvik Museum is housed in the old Grande School and features an exhibition of antique village agricultural tools from the local area.
The fertile soil and the expansive sky over Inderøy provide excellent ingredients for small-scale food production. Inderøysodd, produced in Straumen, is a cherished variant of the traditional Trøndelag dish.
16 DEN GYLDNE OMVEI
The Golden Road passes through beautiful cultural landscapes along Fv761/FV755 (with detours), offering a variety of interesting stops with rich family-oriented offerings. Locally produced food, special accommodations, dining establishments, artisans, exhibitions, landmarks, and farms are among the attractions. www.dgo.no.

17 MUUSTRØPARKEN
The award-winning Muustrø Park is an idyllic oasis in the heart of Straumen. Here, you can engage all your senses while strolling through the park. Nils Aas’s large and small sculptures, as well as a mill, are among the attractions. Ringstu is one of the oldest preserved houses in Inderøy and is located right in the middle of the park.
At the mouth of the Grana River, you can walk across Muusbrua Bridge from 1816 to the sculpture ”Flounder” by Nils Aas.
THE VIEW FROM FLAGET LENA JOHNSEN
An audio installation by Øyvind Brandtsegg is integrated into the sculpture.
20 SKARNSUNDET BRIDGE connects Mosvik on the Fosen peninsula to the rest of Inderøy. It is one of the world’s longest cable-stayed bridges, where the distinctive red cables stretch into the sky like a giant harp. The National Heritage Board designated the bridge as a protected monument in 2008.
Skarnsundet is a marine conservation area and a popular diving and fishing location. It links the Trondheimsfjord with the Beitstadfjord.”
ACTIVE HOLIDAY
Enjoy one of the many cultural- and hiking trails in Inderøy. Try the cultural trails from Gulburet to Straumen and Straumen to Vangshylla, the Northugrunden, Letnes Cultural Trail or the trail up to Storknuken Mountain. Many also choose to make Inderøy their destination for a cycling holiday. Whether on a bike or on foot, the journey follows ancient routes from fjord to fjord through beautiful cultural landscapes dotted with burial mounds and standing stones. Between hiking and cycling, you’ll have plenty of time for gallery visits, shopping, and enjoying good food.
”Trimtrappa” in Prestlia is 150 meters long, consisting of 312 steps, and is illuminated for use around the clock.
Cross country ski trails: Petter Northug ski stadium close to Straumen, Vårlonken in Mosvik or Solbergrunden ski trail in Framverran.

Steinkjer municipality extends from the high mountains in the east to the coast and Fosen in the west. The town centre is located at the innermost part of Beitstadfjorden and presents itself as a modern small town with charming niche shops, restaurants, and a cultural centre, along with large commercial establishments just outside of the town centre.
Steinkjer farm is the common thread in Steinkjer’s history from the saga era. The town emerged as craftsmen and merchants settled in the area around Steinkjer farm. The schooners and the garrison environment at Sannan brought new impulses and increased activity to Steinkjer.
The wooden empire-style buildings disappeared with the city fire in 1900 and were replaced by impressive structures with towers and spires in the characteristic Art Nouveau style. Steinkjer was carpet-bombed in April 1940, and 80% of the city was leveled. Reconstruction began in 1941 and was completed in 1965.
THE RECONTRUCTION of Steinkjer was planned by the Burned Places Regulation, under the leadership of Professor Sverre Pedersen. His urban planning interventions are easily visible in the cityscape: Kongens gate is a baroque visual axis with the fire station tower in the north and Oftenåsen in the south as the backdrop motif.
CULTURE QUARTER - THE NEW SQUARE
The square is surrounded by the new cultural centre, the Community House, and the church, together forming the cultural quarter. Steinkjer Cultural Center opened in September 2023 and includes a cinema, Steinkaret (digital exhibition room), art rooms, a museum, and a library spread across three floors.
30 STEINKJER CHURCH also known as the Weidemann Cathedral, is adorned with Weidemann’s art. The church stands prominently with a 38-meter free-standing bell tower. Jakob Weidemann is considered one of the most important artists in Norwegian modernism.
HISTORICAL STEINKJER
Norway’s first registered Stone Age settlement is located at Våttåbakken north of the town centre. Several burial sites indicate significant activity over thousands of years. Snorre’s King Sagas tell the tale of Egge as a long-standing chiefdom. The man who led the peasant army in the battle at Stiklestad in 1030 lived here. The Battle at Mære in 1021 is not as well-known, but it set the stage for the Battle at Stiklestad.
39 At Egge Museum, the history is conveyed from the Stone Age to the present day - with burial mounds, a complete 19th-century farmstead, an intriguing city street, and the County Governor’s Residence from 1919.
43 At Bøla near Snåsavatnet, people from the Stone Age carved symbols and figures of various kinds. The most famous are the 6000-year-old Bølareinen (Bøla reindeer) and Bølamannen on skis. There is a summer café and hiking trails with views over Snåsavatnet. www.bolarein.no
40 More than 400 Neolithic and Bronze Age rock carvings can be found in the Bardal field. Humans, animals, and boats are among the motifs. The figures are best viewed when the sun is low in the sky. It is easily accessible and close to the farm Bardal.
MINING - HISTORICAL CULTURAL HERITAGE
41 Fosdalen’s mining facility in Bergmannsparken in Malm is the deepest iron ore mine in Northern Europe and was in operation until 1997. This laid the foundation for prosperity and made Malm one of the country’s wealthiest municipalities.

The Cultural Scene “Vårt Hjem” has a unique atmosphere and offers concerts with local, national, and international artists throughout the year.

Snåsa / Snåasen tjïelte is a paradise for outdoor activities, hunting, and fishing, and it is a designated area for the preservation of the Southern Sami language and culture. The municipality has a rich tradition of agriculture, and visitors can also experience traditional mountain farming culture.
Snåsa town centre is located at the northern end of Lake Snåsavatnet You can reach it via the E6 highway, County Road 763, or by train.
47 Before the railway arrived in 1926, Snåsa was connected to the outside world by a steamboat, and the harbour town of Viosen was the central hub of that time. The buildings in Viosen stretch down to the water’s edge and are characterised by unique architecture, with the stately community house, Vonheim, standing proudly at the top.
A great alternative to the E6 between Snåsa and Steinkjer is County Road 763. This route takes you through beautiful natural scenery and cultural landscapes. Along the way, you can visit the Bølareinen rock carvings, the Jørstadelva and Tangen war memorials, and the Grønnøra beach. From Breide, you can turn off towards an access point for Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park. Most of Snåsa’s charming accommodations are located along County Road 763. Dining can be found in the town centre, in Viosen, and at Snåsa Kroa by the E6.
SOUTH SAMI CULTURE
Snåsa is a central hub for Southern Sami culture, hosting several Sami institutions, including a kindergarten, a primary school with a dormitory, and Gïelem nastedh – a Southern Sami language and competency center. The County Governor and the Sami Parliament also have several functions based in Snåsa, and modern reindeer herding is practiced in large parts of the municipality.
45 Saemien Sijte - the national Southern Sami museum and
cultural center – is open year-round and plays a key role in conveying Southern Sami history and culture. www.saemiensijte.no
“SETER” CULTURE IN SNÅSA
Snåsa has a rich tradition of mountain farming, upheld today by dedicated farmers. In the summer, you can visit selected mountain farms in Snåsa, where cows graze on fresh, herb-rich grass, giving the milk and farm products distinctive qualities. Relax in the serene surroundings of the pasture and enjoy traditional farm fare made on-site. Farms are located along Snåsavatnet, near roads, and in the high mountains.
LOCAL FOOD
Beyond the farms, you can also enjoy locally sourced food from the many producers in the municipality. In the town centre, you’ll find the store Arv Lokalmat, offering local foods from Snåsa and the Innherred region. It also serves as the tourist information centre.
GJERSTADHUSET
MUSEUM
The childhood home of “The Snåsa Man” Joralf Gjerstad (19262021) is located between the old tannery and Snåsa Church. The house remains largely as it was during his upbringing, containing photos and awards that Joralf and his wife Signe received over their long lives.
EVENTS/FESTIVALS
From June 27-29, 2025, Snåsa will host the Snåsa Game Fair, featuring a fishing competition, numerous exhibitors in outdoor and wilderness equipment, and lots of entertainment. In autumn, the local food festival Meirsmak takes place, offering multiple days of events centered around local cuisine and entertainment. There are also many standalone events throughout the year.
PLACES OF WORSHIP
49 Snåsa Church is a cruciform church in the neo-Gothic style. The oldest part, now serving as the choir and sacristy, was built in the first half of the 1200s. Megard Church site is an open-air church located by the St. Olav’s Spring in Imsdalen, a spring historically known for its healing powers.

For multi-day mountain hikes, you can follow the “Mountain Farm Route,” passing through Snåsa’s stunning mountain areas with overnight stays and meals available at four mountain farms: Gressåmoen, Gjefsjøen, Holden, and Gaundalen.
Snåsa Fjellstyre manages the state commons in Snåsa, Norway’s second-largest common land. They rent out cabins, providing excellent bases for hunting, fishing, and outdoor activities.
There are around 2,500 lakes in the area, ideal for anglers. Snåsavatnet, Norway’s 6th largest lake, is known for its excellent trout and Arctic char fishing. It’s also well-suited for canoeing and kayaking, with five marked paddling routes. And if you’re lucky, you might spot the mythical lake serpent Kudulla!
The municipality offers several marked hiking and cycling routes. One of them, the Town Center Loop, passes through the 46 Bergsåsen Nature Reserve in the heart of Snåsa, featuring scenic trails and a stairway to one of the lookout points. Both here and in Finsåsmarka, you can find a rich variety of wild orchids in June and July. Snåsa’s official flower is the Lady’s Slipper orchid, which also appears in the municipal coat of arms. A total of 17 different orchids have been recorded in the municipality.
The hike to the ancient hillfort Roaldstein offers a fantastic view of the lake, village and mountians. The hike is short and family-friendly, with a campfire site and benches at the top.
‘Tuppturer’: Walking along the peninsulas jutting into Snåsavatnet offers unique experiences, allowing you to get far out into the lake without getting your feet wet. These spots are perfect for recreation and fishing from the shore.
