Over 1,000 years ago the Vikings crossed the seas in their longboats and descended on the Island and to this day, it remains an attractive destination for modern day explorers. The Vikings loved it so much they decided to settle here and during their reign they created the Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. It was decided the Kingdom’s capital would be St Patrick’s Isle and so Peel Castle was built on the site of a Celtic monastery. Now one of the Island’s most photographed attractions, you can stroll the castle’s extensive ruins, step underground into the crypt and climb to the top of the gatehouse where you can enjoy panoramic views of Peel and beyond.
quick fact It is possible to see many of the Island’s heritage attractions by travelling on the impressive network of heritage railways powered by steam, electricity and even horsepower.
Travel even further back in time with a visit to the Manx Museum and discover artefacts belonging to the earliest traces of people on the Island. As well as artefacts from the Mesolithic Period, the museum is bursting with many other treasures unique to the Island’s colourful history.
Go Explore Heritage cards, which include unlimited travel plus admission to all Manx National Heritage attractions, are available online www.rail.im or in person from various tourist information points, main stations and the House of Manannan in Peel.
Or visit one of Europe’s best preserved medieval castles, Castle Rushen, to find out how the Kings and Lords of Mann lived. The castle holds many stories within its walls, originally built for a Norse king and later besieged by Robert the Bruce, the castle has been a royal residence, a mint and a prison. Explore its rooms and furnished chambers, hear from the past inhabitants and discover who shaped its future.

Make History...
NAUTICAL
The Isle of Man has a unique and varied heritage which is as evident today as it was many thousands of years ago. With an abundance of authentic experiences on your doorstep you won’t have to go far to exercise your children’s imaginations. But don’t just take our word for it. We asked some budding historians to tell us about their favourite history and heritage attractions on the Isle of Man.
HOUSE of
MANANNAN
Journey through a life-sized reconstruction of a Celtic roundhouse, join the crew of Odin’s Raven Viking longship and find out what life was like in a Viking longhouse. During your journey from past to present you’ll also come face to face with characters telling you stories and superstitions from the Island’s past.
WHAT WAS THE MOST INTERESTING FACT YOU LEARNED? I think the most interesting bit was getting to see the replica Viking longship. I thought it was really interesting because you think it is just a ship that has been built and put in a museum but it was actually built in Norway and in 1979 a crew from Norway and the Isle of Man sailed it here using the same route that the Vikings would have used to reach the Isle of Man all those years ago.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE NAUTICAL MUSEUM? I loved getting to dress up like a captain in the fancy dress costumes and I loved the cabin room. At first when you go in you think it is an empty room but when you start looking properly there are loads of secret cupboards and stash holes to find. The fireplace looks like a normal fireplace but it is a secret safe and there is also a secret door to find.

GREAT LAXEY WHEEL & MINES
This feat of Victorian engineering and ingenuity is the largest surviving waterwheel of its kind in the world. The Lady Isabella as she is also known, served the mine for 70 years and became the Island’s most dramatic tourist attraction. Beyond the wheel you can explore the mine and the trail to the mine ruins to learn more about the lives of the Laxey miners. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE GREAT LAXEY WHEEL & MINES? I really liked getting to climb up to the top of the wheel and watching it go round and round. You can see really far from the top and we were seeing how many things we could spot. I wished it was a ride so I could slide back down! I also thought the mines were fun, like a secret tunnel, but they were quite dark and wet.
Settled on an upland plateau, in the shadow of Meayll Hill and overlooking the Calf of Man, Cregneash was one of the last strongholds of the Manx language and customs which characterised the traditional crofting way of life. Step inside the Manx cottages to see how crofters lived through stories, skills and craft demonstrations. Borrow a ‘busy bee’ explorer pack and head out into the surrounding area. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF CREGNEASH? I really enjoyed looking for all of the animals like the Manx cats (cats with no tail), Loaghtan Sheep (four-horned sheep) and plough horses. I loved finding out how they used to do the farming in the olden days. I also enjoyed going into the different cottages and seeing the people in the costumes and learning about their stories, they were really good actors. I am going to come back in October for the Hop-tu-Naa celebrations and activities, like turnip carving, that sounds really cool. WHAT WAS THE MOST INTERESTING FACT YOU LEARNED? That Cregneash is the last surviving crofting village on the Isle of Man and that the houses have been kept exactly the same as they were. It is really interesting to compare the furniture, tools and clothing to what we have nowadays. I also learned that at night time Cregneash is the perfect place to watch the stars. I would like to come back on a clear night and use the picture boards to help me find the different stars and galaxies.
WHAT WAS THE MOST INTERESTING FACT YOU LEARNED? I learned that the big wheel is next to the mines for a very special reason. There were lots of men going to work in the mines and the mines were full of water, so they built the wheel and it pumped the water out of the mine so it was safe for the men to go to work. You also need to wear a helmet in the mine so you don’t bump your head!

Uncover the story of the inventive Captain George Quayle and his most significant surviving creation ‘Peggy’, the earliest known example of a British armed yacht. Find out what excavations revealed about nautical life in Castletown and the exploits and ingenuity of the Captain who designed his own cabin room and private dock. Hear about the work the Nautical Museum are doing to conserve Peggy to ensure she survives her third century.
WHAT WAS THE MOST INTERESTING FACT YOU LEARNED? I learned that in the 1930’s they found Captain Quayle’s yacht underneath the house. Maybe nobody had known about it because Captain Quayle might have been a smuggler and didn’t want to get caught so he carefully hid the boat from sight. The boat had been there since the 1790s, which means it was nearly 150 years old before it was discovered.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE HOUSE OF MANANNAN? There were a few bits I really liked, I enjoyed getting to go on the replica captain’s deck and see what it is like to steer an Isle of Man Steam Packet Company ship. I also thought the kipper factory section was quite cool, the fake blood on the walls was really realistic and the smell was too!

My Favourite Walk Dr Andrew Foxon owner of Go-Mann Adventures, which offers guided tours, walks and adventures. Q. What’s your favourite walk on the Island? A. The Raad ny Foillan long distance coastal footpath
that runs for almost 100 miles around the Island has a lot of variety. But the stretch from Port St Mary, past the Sound and then on to Port Erin is, for me, the best of the lot. And if coastal walking, cliffs, islands, tidal races, seals, birds and plants make a good walk for you then you’ll love it too!
Q. What makes this walk special?
xx 16
A. For most of the walk you’re right by the sea,
sometimes at sea level, then as you follow rising tracks along the coast it’s one ‘reveal’ after another as each view opens up a new headland, bay and the Calf of Man. A (very careful) visit to the Chasms is an essential for me, the deep fissures in the rock and the call of the birds on the Sugarloaf are astonishing and unique.
Q. What can you expect to see on this walk? A. Every day the bird, plant and animal life is a delight.
With rugged cliffs, rolling hills, wooded valleys and hidden coves the Isle of Man offers some of the most dramatic landscapes in the British Isles making it a leading destination for walkers. Get started with over 40 downloadable selfguided walking trails allowing you to search by level of difficulty, length and location. I love to watch the racing tide, the crashing waves and the colours of the vegetation on the Calf of Man. Then I try to work out where the seals are. Often they poke their heads up out of the water and stare at me as I stare at them, staring back at me staring at them.
There are some astonishing rock formations on the way, like the giant’s head in Bradda, and some great views. On clear days you can see the Mountains of Mourne in Northern Ireland so clearly, you’d think you could just reach out and touch them.

Custom printed pinstripes, wigs and robes, and an incredible 15,000 pieces of Lego® make up a new model of Tynwald Day at the Island’s cultural centre in St John’s, located opposite the famous Tynwald Hill itself. Visit page 34 to find out how you can join in the annual Tynwald celebrations and see how our cultural heritage is still alive and kicking.
In so many ways, it’s the people who make the Island such a wonderful place, that continue to shape our culture today. Think of the Isle of Man as a meeting place for cultures, one that mixes Norse and Celtic roots with influences from all of the surrounding nations and then makes it its own – that’s what it is to be Manx today.

A decade of
deliciousness Q & A with ANDY HARDY MANAGING DIRECTOR, THE COURTHOUSE Q. What do you think makes Taste Isle of Man so
Food and drink has long been an important part of our Island’s heritage, as well as informing our cultural identity. With a legacy of world-class seafood, rare breed livestock and a rich tradition in farming, it is no wonder that an exciting food and drink scene has emerged.
important?
A. The fact that we are judged by an independent,
experienced assessor who does the job for a living. This means you get valuable feedback and a means of benchmarking yourself against what you hoped to achieve and your competition. Also, as we have received the highest quality award for food, drink and service for the last eight years since we opened this is a source of great pride for me and my team and should also give our customers confidence in our consistency and high standards.
24
Q. What level of commitment do you have to local produce?
In 2008 the independently assessed quality assurance scheme ‘Taste Isle of Man’ was introduced to recognise establishments serving quality food in order to help our visitors make an informed choice about where to eat.
A. We were very proud to be the first hospitality
establishment on the Island to be recognised and awarded the provenance award for supporting local suppliers - this proves that we take the provision of food very seriously. The Island is blessed with some incredible producers and as a business we believe that quality food must be made from the freshest and best ingredients available. By having this award it proves we source our ingredients from local, high quality food producers.
Ten years on and we now have over 60 Taste members providing a consistently high quality dining experience across a range of restaurants, cafes & tearooms, pubs & wine bars, street food and takeaways throughout the Island, so you’ll never go hungry!
Q. What dish would you recommend from your menu
Simply look for the Taste logo in the establishment window, registered eateries are awarded ‘quality assured’ or ‘highest quality assured’ accolades in recognition of their commitment to quality and service for visitors.
for a true taste of the Isle of Man?
A. We have a large and varied menu so this is a difficult question!
Our Harvest Award recognises businesses that celebrate the very best of local Manx produce and place it at the heart of their menus. So whether you fancy sampling our world-famous Queenies or locally made cheese, these are the eateries to visit for real local flavour. You can pick up your Taste directory when you arrive on the Island or visit www.visitisleofman.com to browse the listings ahead of time.

I would probably start with the Manx Queenies or the slow roasted Manx pork belly slices. Then for main course it would be the 12oz Manx ribeye, cooked rare with our Courthouse jus, or the slow braised Manx lamb shank with the red wine, shallot and wild mushroom jus. And if I had space, I’d probably pretend to share a sticky toffee pudding!

“Quality time spent with family is really important to us and we love getting away from it all with the grandchildren. We enjoy being active and outdoors and love to try new things, without having to travel too far from home, so our trip to the Island was perfect.” Where we stayed: We stayed in a lovely B&B in Ramsey. Our favourite day: Our favourite day was spent exploring Ramsey and the North of the Island.
the
short breakers “We travel a lot but had never visited the Isle of Man before as we didn’t think it would be different enough from the UK to warrant the travel. But after it was recommended to us by some friends who were planning on a return visit we decided to go along with them. We were able to book well in advance so the flight prices were far lower than we expected, and that wasn’t the only pleasant surprise, we were blown away by the amount of amazing experiences to discover. The only downside was that we didn’t have time to experience them all, we will definitely be returning.”
How we got there: We came to the Island by boat and brought our own car, we used Sat Nav to find our way around. Where we stayed: We stayed in a self-catering property near Peel Our favourite day: Our favourite day was spent exploring Peel and the West of the Island.
What we did:
30
We packed up the car with a picnic and our buckets and spades and headed to the beach at the Ayres Nature Reserve. The beach there is huge and we had a whole section to ourselves.
How we got there: We came to the Island by plane and used a combination of public transport and taxis to get around.
The kids got straight to work building sandcastles and we took it in turns to spot some of the local wildlife, including a couple of friendly seals who came over to say hello.
What we did: We took a short five minute walk into Peel and from there a short bus journey down the west coast of the Island to a place called Niarbyl. We are keen walkers and wildlife enthusiasts and had found out that this was one of the best places on the Island to spot the local species of bird and marine life.
One of the kids’ favourite traditions is to hold beach races, and this stretch of sand was so long they were able to work up a great appetite ahead of our picnic lunch.
After lunch we dusted off the sand and travelled the 15 minute journey to the Ballaugh Curraghs. This is an area of small woods, meadows, ponds, bogs and grassland, and most excitingly, it is home to the Island’s wild wallabies.
We used the Manx Wildlife Trust’s interpretation boards and binoculars to identify all the species and managed to tick quite a few off the list including guillemots, oystercatchers and grey seals.
We had seen the family friendly wallaby walk trail on the visitisleofman website and printed off the maps before we came. This meant we were able to hand over to the kids and let them take charge of the search. Unfortunately we didn’t spot any of the Manx marsupials, but that’s to be expected with three loud children, and we still had a great adventure. Next time we think we will go later in the day and may even look to hire one of the local tour guides to help us catch a glimpse. The kids had been eyeing up Mooragh Park near our B&B in Ramsey all week so we decided to finish the day off with a short visit. There was so much to do there, including tennis, a water play area, crazy golf and a BMX track, that we really could have spent a whole day doing it all. But as we only had a couple of hours, the kids opted for a play in the park before spending some of their hard-earned pocket money on ice creams and a go on the pedalos. We had a quick bite to eat and then went back to the B&B and chilled for the rest of the night, we were all sandier, muddier and sleepier than we had been for a long time, but all the richer for it. #loveiom

We arrived back in Peel over the top of Peel Hill, with amazing views over the harbour, beach and Castle and could smell the kippers smoking in the factory as we began our descent into the town.
We returned to Peel on foot following ‘The Way of the Gull’ (‘The Raad ny Foillan’ to locals), the Island’s coastal footpath that encompasses the Island in a near 100 mile loop. Our stretch of the walk was only six miles but was packed full of stunning views, varying terrains and interesting things to see, such as a gorgeous glen waterfall, an old water wheel and a glimpse of Tynwald Hill.
So that was lunch decided, and the kippers tasted as good as they smelled. We also tried the local Queenies and crab, which were equally as delicious and the freshest we had ever tasted. Local seafood is super easy to get your hands on in Peel with an abundance of lovely restaurants, kiosks and takeouts selling the catch of the day. In the afternoon we decided to further explore some of the local attractions including the House of Manannan and Peel Castle. Both were steeped in fascinating Viking history which kept us intrigued and occupied for the rest of the day. Then it was back to our accommodation for a bit of downtime before revisiting the harbour for a beautiful fish supper-another astounding meal. And just when we thought the day couldn’t get much better, we went for a post-meal stroll along the beach just in time to see the most glorious sunset over the castle. the FAMILY EXPLORERS
the work hard Play hards
“We are busy working parents looking for an escape from the routine to relax and explore as a family unit. Essentials for us are familyfriendly accommodation, restaurants and plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained. This was our third visit to the Island, and each year the family offering has been better than the last. We will definitely be returning for a fourth visit!”
“We work long hours in pretty demanding jobs so our days off are really precious to us. We often go on mini-breaks and weekends away and love trying new experiences. We packed loads into our short break, had great fun living like locals, and came away feeling recharged and reinvigorated.” Where we stayed: A beautiful holiday cottage in Laxey.
Where we stayed: A self-catering property near Ballasalla.
Our favourite day: Our favourite day was spent exploring the Island’s capital, Douglas.
Our favourite day: Our favourite day was spent exploring the South of the Island.
How we got there: We used the Manx Electric Railway to get from Laxey to Douglas and returned by taxi.
How we got there: We invested in ‘5 Day Go Explore’ heritage cards which included unlimited travel on public transport and admission to all Manx National Heritage attractions.
What we did: We got up early and went for a morning kayak session with a local activity provider. It was challenging but we saw some beautiful scenery and were introduced to many of the species of local wildlife.
What we did:
32
We walked the short distance from our accommodation to Rushen Abbey in Ballasalla where we spent a couple of hours. The children had a great time following the ‘Monky Business’ activity trail and we all had a good giggle dressing up in the Monks’ robes.
The trail finished in the gardens where we had a wander around the medieval ruins before taking to the lawn for some serious space hopper racing.
Our ‘quick visit’ turned into an entire day of basking in the sunshine, chatting to local food and drink producers, sampling their delicious produce and listening to the fabulous local entertainment. We felt so at home and couldn’t believe how friendly everyone was.
We then walked to Ballasalla Railway Station where we boarded the steam train to Castletown. We used the steam train a lot during our stay in the South of the Island, and our Harry Potter and Thomas the Tank Engine super fans loved it. After arriving in Castletown we popped into a local restaurant for a bit of lunch and a quick re-charge of our batteries before heading to the Nautical Museum.
One of the ladies we had been chatting to told us about the resurgence that Douglas Quayside had undergone in recent years so we decided that that’s where we would head for our evening meal once the festivities had died down. She also introduced us to one of the restaurant owners who kindly made a reservation for us.
What looks like a fairly understated museum from the outside turned out to be a hidden gem with an exciting story that really captured the kids’ imaginations – helped of course by our second lot of fancy dress that day.
#loveiom
33
After a quick shower and change we then hopped on one of the morning trams to Douglas, from nearly right outside our cottage. Our friendly tram driver had mentioned the Isle of Man Food & Drink Festival was on that day, so we decided to pay it a quick visit. The sun was shining so we decided to stretch our legs and walk the mile and a bit along the promenade to the venue.
When we emerged from the museum the sun was still shining so we took a nice walk around to Scarlett Point and let the children burn off a bit more steam while we took in the beautiful views.
After having learned so many great things about the local produce earlier that day we were delighted to find that so much of it was available on the menus of all of the restaurants in the area. When it comes to clean, sustainable and ethical food and drink, this area is one of the best we have visited in Britain.
We stayed so late that we missed the last train but this wasn’t a problem, we popped into the local supermarket in Castletown for supplies and then hopped on a bus back to our property where we spent the rest of the evening.
Even the after-dinner cocktails served at the bar we visited were made from local produce, so of course we had to sample a few! We returned to the cottage suitably fuelled for our six hour bike ride the next day.
