Walk on the wildside

Whether you want a gentle stroll, hearty hill walk or a challenging hike, a visit to the Isle of Man will soon highlight why it’s something of a paradise for those on two feet. With extensive coastal footpaths, rolling hills and forest trails the variety of the terrain here is abundant – it’s also the perfect place to spot wildlife, totally undisturbed in a natural environment.

Ways to Walk Regardless of whether you have an hour, a day or a week you’re guaranteed to find a walk to suit: Experience our most famous walk the Raad Ny Foillan or “Way of the Gull”. It’s a 95 mile coastal footpath which can be walked in sections – your chance to circumnavigate an entire country’s coastline. Looking for peace and tranquillity? The Island has 18 mountain and coastal national glens which combine beautiful scenery, tumbling waterfalls and in most cases a route to the coast.

Alternatively why not try… Guided Walks: Walk safe in the knowledge you won’t get lost with Go Mann Adventures which offers guided walks of varying lengths - you can even design your own! www.go-mannadventures.com Steam Railway Walks: Guided walks focussing on the south – these trails all factor in the Steam Railway, each starting at a different station along the line. A perfect way to combine Victorian travel with a stroll and then a leisurely journey home. www.visitisleofman.com/walking Warden’s Walks: Self-guided walks around the Island’s plantations varying in difficulty, distance and terrain - you’ll find any climbs are included early on so you’ll be met with fantastic views before beginning your descent. www.visitisleofman.com/walking Ghost Walks: Experience a spine tingling walk around some of the most historic and haunted places on the Island – its a real test of nerve. Will you be brave enough? www.iomghosttours.com or www.manxmacabretours.com Endurance Walks: Feeling competitive? The 85-mile Parish Walk takes in all of the Island’s parishes within 24 hours whilst the End to End, at 39.22 miles, is a race from north to south. www.parishwalk.com and www.end2endwalk.org Download the Isle of Man Walking Guide at www.visitisleofman.com/activeguides , or pick one up when you arrive – it highlights seven of the best self-guided walks and also includes a handy map.

pedal POWER

Best known as the home of the TT Course, the Island’s roads have another twowheeled story to tell – one which is producing superstars of its own. Here’s your chance to take in the varied terrain which has propelled some of the world’s best cyclists – think Mark Cavendish and Peter Kennaugh - to success.

Arguably one of the best places in the British Isles to ride, variety is the spice of life when it comes to the Island’s cycling landscape. Explore the quiet country roads, coastal footpaths and plantations at your leisure or tackle steep climbs – dubbed the ‘Manx Alps’ - to be rewarded with sensational scenery before feeling the adrenaline rush as you start your descent. Mountain bikers who are keen to get off the beaten track will find a wealth of off-road trails – particularly popular are the vast plantations, several of which are waymarked to help you make the most of your visit. Suitable for all ages and levels of ability it’s no wonder the Island breeds young cycling talent - in fact two of the greatest cyclists of the modern generation started here.

Manx Missile Mark Cavendish MBE – the fastest man on two wheels – has competed on the road since 2006 winning 25 Tour de France stages, currently sitting in third place in the all time stage victory table. Alongside Cav, who uses the Isle of Man’s road climbs to train for international meetings, is Peter Kennaugh MBE. The Olympic gold medallist, who rides for Team Sky, took victory at the London 2012 Olympics – his medal making him the first Manxman in 100 years to claim a gold. Continuing his winning streak he took the top spot in the Tour of Austria in 2014 as well as a silver medal for the Island at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

A mecca for

motorsport Welcome to the road-racing capital of the world - it’s time to experience what the Isle of Man does best. Each year thousands of visitors return to this mecca for motorsport to sample the thrills of racing at its finest. Our public roads play host to a number of events throughout the year – topping the bill and dubbed as the ‘greatest road-racing event in the world’ is the TT. For the last 100 years the Island has opened up the throttle and roared into life as riders compete for the Tourist Trophy. Taking place on the 37 ¾ mile Mountain Course world famous riders, and some locals, pit themselves against each other and the road. Skill, bravery and determination is needed as riders reach speeds of 200mph in their bid to be crowned champion.

And it doesn’t end there… Why not try the reinvigorated Festival of Motorcycling? Incorporating the Manx Grand Prix, Classic TT, Festival of Jurby, Manx Classic Trial and the Manx Two Day Trial this event turns back the clock to the golden age of motorcycling reliving the sights, sounds and smells of classic racing. www.iomfom.com The Southern 100 in July sees mass starts on the smaller 4.25 mile Billown Course in the south. It’s where many British and World Champions cut their teeth – the late great Joey Dunlop won 42 races on this track. www.southern100.com For those more at home on four wheels look out for the three-day Rally Isle of Man event in September. It’s one of the most challenging and demanding courses in the British Isles and makes up part of the British Rally Championship. www.rallyisleofman.co.im

Packed to the rafters and bursting with artefacts and treasures unique to the Isle of Man, the Island’s 10,000 year history is presented through film, galleries and interactive displays. It’s the perfect place to start your journey around the heritage sites without spending a penny. www. manxnationalheritage. im

Your chance to take part in a high-tech treasure hunt that is popular worldwide. Try and find more than 600 caches, which are hidden the length and breadth of the Island, using your GPS device and trusty coordinates. Once you find one, sign the record, and replace it ready to be found by the next seeker. www.geocaching.com

Recognised as being one of the best places in Britain for stargazing, the Island has 26 Dark Sky Discovery Sites – the largest concentration in Europe. Lack of light pollution means you’re in with a real chance of seeing the Milky Way, numerous planets and even the world famous Northern Lights. The Island’s skies really do light up when the sun goes down so pick a clear night, wrap up warm and go stargazing. See the back cover of this guide for some of the spectacular sites you may see or visit www.visitisleofman. com/darkskies

Hit the park with a visit to one of our excellent open spaces – perfect for a family friendly day out. Wide-open spaces are perfect for ball games, walking or simply relaxing with a picnic. Try Mooragh Park in Ramsey, which boasts an extensive playground, boating lake and ‘wet play’ area or Silverdale in Ballasalla - as well as a boating lake it has numerous walking trails and a Victorian water powered carousel.

Scheduled tours of the world’s oldest continuous parliament offer visitors the chance to visit the home of Manx politics. Watch the court sitting, tour the Legislative Chambers and learn more about the Island’s political history. Why not tie it in with a visit to Tynwald Hill in St Johns where once a year on Tynwald Day – the Island’s national bank holiday - parliament sits in the open air? www.tynwald.org.im

, y d a e t s Ready, go... With so much to see and do on the Island you’ll find your most pressing problem will simply be how to find the time to fit it all in! Why not use these sample itineraries as a guide to show you just how much you can accomplish during your visit?

Day 1 Douglas is home to the Manx Museum, and nearby iMuseum, both of which are packed to the rafters with history and heritage and a perfect place to start before boarding the Steam Railway. Railway The longest narrow gauge steam line in Britain will take you to the ancient capital Castletown where you’ll find Castle Rushen, one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval castles. From here continue your journey to the end of the line at Port Erin, where you’ll see the Railway Museum, before heading further south to Cregneash – a secluded 19th century crofting community. Nearby is the Meayll Hill Neolithic passage grave and The Chasms which offers perfect abseiling terrain if you have a head for heights. Follow the coastline on foot to the most southerly point The Sound – the footpaths here make up part of the 100-mile Raad ny Foillan. Extra time? See more of the Island’s capital, Douglas, by taking a whistle-stop tour aboard the open-top sightseeing tour bus. Follow this with a spot of retail therapy or a hike to the Great Union Camera Obscura on Douglas Head, which provides panoramic views across the bay. When night falls be sure to pay a visit to the Gaiety Theatre, which was designed by famed architect Frank Matcham, or the Villa Marina for a yearround programme of entertainment.

Day 2

Day 3

Embrace the great outdoors and attack the Ape Mann adventure course nestled in the South Barrule plantation – you’ll also find a wealth of mountain bike and walking trails here, perfect if you enjoy fresh air and beautiful surroundings.

Journey to the north of the Island in the 100-year-old Manx Electric Railway tramcars to Ramsey along a 17-mile stretch of beautiful countryside.

Afterwards head to St Johns to the Tynwald Arboretum - made up of trees from the 17 parishes, it’s a perfect picnic spot. Don’t miss the Tynwald Mills retail outlet for a boutique shopping experience as well as Tynwald Hill, which is where the Manx parliament sits in the open once a year. Respite over, it’s time to head west for some more adrenaline fuelled adventure – the coastline around Peel Castle is perfect for watersports. Take a chartered boat trip or sample coasteering or kayaking – try a sunset paddle or overnight expedition where you can sleep under the stars.

Visit the Grove Museum of Victorian Life or Mooragh Park, which has its own boating lake, before venturing to Milntown – an impressive historic house set in 15.5 acres of beautifully maintained gardens and a perfect spot for afternoon tea. Board the tram back to Laxey, in the east, where you’ll find the world’s largest working waterwheel Lady Isabella, as well as the Laxey Woollen Mills where Manx tartan is made. Nearby in Maughold you’ll find the largest Neolithic tomb in the British Isles at Cashtal yn Ard. There are numerous Dark Sky Discovery Sites across the Island – one of the most popular spots is at the top of the Island’s only mountain. Take the Snaefell Mountain Railway to the summit, as night falls, for supper and stargazing.

Extra time? Start your day with a round of golf at one of nine impressive courses – wherever you choose you’ll be well placed, when finished, to take in one of the Island’s stunning national glens. With 18 to choose from you’ll find most usually lead to the sea – Groudle Glen, near Onchan, has its own two-foot gauge railway, which runs to the remains of a zoo complex. If you want to take things at a leisurely speed try a quad biking experience through the valleys or a gentle hack through the countryside on horseback.

Extra days... The Point of Ayre, at the northern tip of the Island, is home to the Ayres Visitor Centre, which lies in low-lying sand dunes and is home to a wide array of wildlife. Nearby you’ll find the Jurby Transport Museum, housed in a Second World War hangar, and Curraghs Wildlife Park, which is home to around 100 animal species many of which are endangered in the wild.

Please note it is illegal to drive any vehicle whilst using your mobile phone.

Car Parking There is free parking available in designated spaces in all the main towns; however, there is a time limit to how long you can stay. Parking Discs are required to display in the windscreen showing the time you arrived. These discs are widely available – your hotel may have a supply but if not you can obtain them from the Welcome Centre at the Sea Terminal in Douglas, or on the Steam Packet ferries. Car hire companies will provide these in each car.

Cash Machines Automated cash machines are available in all the major towns around the Isle of Man. Isle of Man bank notes are dispensed from all cash machines apart from those situated at the Sea Terminal and the Airport, where English notes are issued.

Chemists Dispensing chemists are open from 9.00am to 5.30pm Mondays to Saturdays. Outside of these times there are limited opening hours and a duty chemist rota is in operation. This list can be obtained from the Department of Health prior to travel. Alternatively, these are posted in the local press and your hotel should be able to provide you with details. Duty Rota hours are from 5.30pm to 6.30pm Monday – Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) and Sundays and Bank Holidays from 12 noon to 1.00pm.

Currency Information The Isle of Man has its own currency with the same denominations as the UK and still has £1 notes. UK currency is legal tender in the Isle of Man but Manx currency is not accepted in the UK, although notes can be exchanged at UK banks.

Doctors and Hospitals The Manx Emergency Doctor Service (MEDS) operate an ‘Out of Hours’ emergency service when doctors’ surgeries are closed. The service is contactable on +44 (0) 1624 650355 and is ONLY available from 6.00pm to 8.00am Monday to Friday, with 24-hour cover over weekends and Bank Holidays

In the case of an emergency please attend A&E (telephone +44 (0) 1624 650040 for A&E enquiries), or for life threatening emergencies please call emergency services on 999. The Isle of Man Nobles Hospital is situated just outside Douglas at The Strang, Braddan. Should you need to contact the hospital the telephone number is +44 (0) 1624 650000. Ramsey Cottage Hospital in the north of the Island can be contacted on +44 (0) 1624 811811. RECIPROCAL HEALTH AGREEMENT: UK residents visiting the Isle of Man will receive free NHS treatment if they become ill whilst in the Isle of Man. Statutory charges are applicable for both residents and visitors e.g. prescription charges. It is strongly recommended that all visitors ensure they have appropriate insurance in place which will cover repatriation to the UK by air ambulance if it should prove necessary. The information regarding the Agreement is correct at the time of publication but visitors are recommended to check the position prior to their visit.

Group Travel The Isle of Man remains a popular destination for group travel. For more information about group travel to the Isle of Man and to request a group travel guide please log on to: www.visitisleofman.com/groups

Taxis Taxi ranks are present directly outside the entrance of the Sea Terminal and airport buildings. Taxis are available to meet flights and sailings and most destinations are covered by fixed tariff charges.

Weather and Shipping Forecasts Accurate and up-to-date forecasts are provided by the Ronaldsway Met Office: Recorded weather forecast: 0900 624 3300 (Premium rate) Weatherman - 24 hours: 0900 624 3200 (Premium rate) Recorded shipping forecast: 0900 624 3322 (Premium rate) Online Information www.gov.im/infocentre

Wi-Fi Hotspots Free Wi-Fi access is readily available on the Island at the Sea Terminal, airport, libraries and many cafes and hotels.

Identification and passports Passports are not required to enter the Isle of Man if you are travelling from the UK or Ireland although airlines will require customers to provide some form of photographic identification. European and global travellers generally have to clear customs and clear passport control on arrival in the UK or Ireland before travelling on to the Isle of Man. If you are planning a night at the Casino you will require some form of photographic identification.

Mobile Phones There are two mobile phone networks operating on the Isle of Man - Manx Telecom and Sure. Each mobile network has commercial agreements with mobile phone networks in the UK, Europe and the rest of the world and it is advisable to check with your own mobile network to determine the level and charges of the roaming services with the Isle of Man providers. Please note the Isle of Man is outside the EU jurisdiction and as such does not benefit from the tariff caps operating within the European Union.

Postal Services The Isle of Man Post Office has, since its formation in 1973, issued distinctive Manx stamps by the Philatelic Bureau. You will need to purchase Manx stamps to post any mail from the Isle of Man.

Police

Make sure you’re covered All visitors to the Isle of Man need adequate insurance cover for any health care needs that may arise during their stay on the Island, including repatriation to their home country. UK residents receive emergency care free under a reciprocal agreement with the UK Government, but insurance to cover repatriation to the UK, if required, is still needed.

The Isle of Man Police are easily recognisable and are very approachable should you need any assistance. The Police Headquarters is at Glencrutchery Road, Douglas and the telephone number is +44 (0) 1624 631212. In an emergency please dial 999.
