Vintage transport, culture, history coupled with the unique Manx experience and our 10th birthday celebrations will make the 2014 Isle of Man Walking Festival a sensory delight. You don’t even need to bring your car as all the walks are linked to our extensive transport system.

The Isle of Man is undoubtedly one of my favourite places for walking in the British Isles.

Despite its size, I find something new every time I visit. The last time it was the delights of the Herring Way. The time before, the part of the Coast Path between Port St Mary and Port Erin. Every time different. Where else can you walk from the coast, through woods, dales and glens before reaching a mountain – all within a 3 hour walk?

And what better time to experience walking on the Island than the Walking Festival?

Because here, you’re not just visiting for the walking, you’ve got entertainment laid on too. A complete package holiday with walking as its theme.

Gradings: How easy is this walk?

LEISURELY - walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience.

The route will include un-surfaced rural paths and tracks. Walking boots and suitable clothing are recommended.

MODERATE - walks for people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness.

The route will include some steep paths and open country. Walking boots and suitable clothing are essential.

STRENUOUS - walks for experienced country walkers and a very good level of fitness.

The route will include some hills and rough country. Walking boots and suitable clothing are essential.

Please note: These walk gradings provided are a general guide only. If you have any doubts about your fitness for a particular walk please contact the organiser or leader in advance.

Bear in mind the distance of the walk, regional differences and the possibility of inclement weather, may make a walk more difficult than anticipated. It is at the guide’s discretion to change the route of a walk should the weather conditions, or other extraneous circumstances, deem it necessary to change a route.

Summary:

Douglas is not all that it seems. Scratch the surface to find hidden Victorian delights such as the Gaiety Theatre and the Great Camera Obscura. Explore the town to find out its secrets during its heyday.

A Foxdale Railway Walk

Summary:

Foxdale was one of the great mining centres of the Isle of Man and this walk gives you an insight into the extensive use of the railways before their decline and then closure in the mid 20th century. There will also be an opportunity to visit the Foxdale Heritage Centre. The walk finishes at St John’s, the site of the interchange station. There will then be plenty of opportunity to explore Tynwald, the site of the ancient Manx Parliament.

Summary:

The route starts with a cliff walk to Dhoon Bay and then up through the spectacular Dhoon Glen, the steepest and longest glen on the Isle of Man. A short trip on the Manx Electric Railway then follows before a stunning walk to the magical Ballaglass Glen. A day of vintage transport, sea, stunning waterfalls and beautiful wildflowers.

Summary:

A beautiful and invigorating moorland walk takes you from Glen Mona up to the famous Black Hut on the TT Course. After admiring the stunning views there is a steep, but very rewarding, climb to the summit of Snaefell. After taking the Manx Electric Railway down to Laxey, there will be plenty of time to visit the historical Laxey Wheel before returning to Douglas.

The Southern Peaks and The Whisky Run

Summary:

If you are looking for a challenge then this is the walk for you. From Port Erin there is a steady climb up to South Barrule. After admiring the views, hill fort and hut circles, you then join The Whisky Run as you descend to Castletown, the ancient capital of Mann.

Summary:

Would you like to tackle the Coastal Footpath year by year? If so, then this is the first stage. Walking at the required speed from Douglas to Castletown, this is a stunning introduction to the Raad Ny Foillan Challenge. Stage 2 will be next year.

Is Peel really the picturesque fishing village, or are there mysterious stories of industry and fishing hidden amongst its tiny lanes? Find out by joining this walk, after which you can sample the delights of Manx ice-cream and a kipper bap.

Spend a day on the remote Calf of Man accompanied by a Manx twitcher to help you identify the amazing number of bird species. There may also be an opportunity for you to meet the Warden.

After admiring the sweeping bay of Port Erin, you join the coastal footpath to Spanish Head. Magnificent views abound as you explore the prehistoric wonders of the Meayll Peninsula. There is then ample time to discover the traditional Manx skills and customs in Cregneash village before returning to Port Erin.

Summary:

A breathtaking walk in many ways! From the top of Snaefell, the Island’s only mountain, there is a short climb to Clagh Ouyr. You will be able to admire spectacular views from the ridge as you then head towards North Barrule. A steep descent will then bring you into the town of Ramsey for a much deserved refreshment!

Summary:

From Groudle Glen a delightful track takes you to the historic St Lonan’s Church with its medieval crosses and the Ballannette Nature Reserve. Turning inland, you explore beautiful farmland and a reservoir before returning via Molly Quirk’s Glen. A very relaxing mid-week walk.

Continuing with our town walks, Ramsey is known as the island’s agricultural town but it also has a strong history of shipbuilding. Close to England, Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia, Ramsey has seen many invasions in the past. It also boasts as being the sunniest spot in the Isle of Man.

Summary:

Ever wondered how to use your compass properly? Does walking on open moors worry you? Would you like to know more about contour lines? If so, then this is the course for you. Day one of a two-day course leading to the National Navigation Award Scheme Bronze Award. Please note numbers are limited to 12 for this course. The second part of the course is on Thursday 15th May.

Organised by the Manx National Farmers’ Union (MNFU) as a means of thanking the 2013 Walkers for their generosity in raising money for the (Isle of Man) Agricultural Benevolent Trust after the devastation caused by the March snow. We would like to use this opportunity to thank the Walkers and the MNFU for their kindness.

The famous horserace ‘The Derby’ hasn’t always been run at Epsom. This delightful coastal walk to the hidden bays of Port Grenaugh and Port Solderick will also give you some inside information about The Derby. There will then be plenty of time to explore Castletown, the ancient capital of Mann.

A Taste Of The Interior

Summary:

A beautiful and interesting walk taking you into the interior of the Isle of Man. After a short climb around Sartfell Hill to admire the views over Kirk Michael, Jurby and the Scottish Hills the route takes you through valleys and plantations to Ballaugh Bridge.

Farm Walk

The snowfall in the Isle of Man that fell during the Spring of 2013 was the heaviest rec orded since 1963. About 700 homes lost power and five people were rescued from their hom es when they were stranded by sno w drifts.

The Isle of Man’s farming community faced catastrop hic losses, despite the efforts of hundre ds of volunteers who helped farmers search for thousands of ani mals buried in the snow.

A Glimpse into the Past

Choose this walk to find out about the Isle of Man’s volcano. A gentle stroll along the Silver Burn takes you to the historical Monks’ Bridge before returning to Ballasalla to walk along the river to Castletown. A walk along the coast takes in an extinct volcano, a Viking Ship Burial Site and Keeill Vael before returning to the ancient capital of Mann, Castletown.

Summary:

This route covers part of the Island’s first long-distance footpath. Starting at the highest point of the Isle of Man, the walk meanders through moors and gorse-covered hillsides as it makes its way to Sky Hill on the outskirts of Ramsey. A little road walking takes you into the town of Ramsey with plenty of time for exploring.

Summary:

Starting in Kirk Michael, on the west coast, this strenuous but satisfying walk encompasses open moorland, hills and plantations as it heads towards Snaefell. You then descend to Laxey on the east coast, passing the ruins of the Snaefell mines. There are beautiful views throughout this walk, including the famous Laxey Wheel.

Booking Conditions Your Holiday Contract. When you make a booking you guarantee that you have the authority to accept and do accept on behalf of your party the terms of these booking conditions. The Inclusive Holiday Contract is with Isle of Man Event Services Ltd and commences on receipt of deposit or payment in full. This contract is made on the terms of these booking conditions, which are governed by Manx law and the jurisdiction of the Isle of Man Courts. In the event of a telephone booking, a copy of the terms and conditions will be forwarded to you. If you do not accept the terms and conditions, you must advise Isle of Man Event Services Ltd in writing within 7 days and you are entitled to a refund of all monies paid.

1. HOLIDAY PAYMENT. At the time of booking, please send a deposit of £60 per adult and £30 per child. The balance is payable 6 weeks before your holiday commences. If the booking is made within 6 weeks of your departure date, the full cost of the holiday must be paid at the time of booking.

2. YOUR HOLIDAY PROTECTION. We are a member of ABTA which means you have the benefit of ABTA’s assistance and Code of Conduct. We provide financial protection for your money when you buy a package holiday. If you buy other travel arrangements such as accommodation only this protection doesn’t apply.

3. YOUR FINANCIAL PROTECTION. When you buy an ATOL protected flight or flight inclusive holiday from us you will receive an ATOL certificate. This lists what is financially protected, where you can get information on what this means for you and who to contact if things go wrong. We or the suppliers identified on your ATOL certificate, will provide you with the services listed on the ATOL certificate (or a suitable alternative). In some cases, where neither we nor the supplier are able to do so for reasons of insolvency, an alternative ATOL holder may provide you with the services you have bought or a suitable alternative (at no extra cost to you). You agree to accept that in those circumstances the alternative ATOL holder will perform those obligations and you agree to pay any money outstanding to be paid by you under your contract to that alternative ATOL holder. However, you also agree that in some cases it will not be possible to appoint an alternative ATOL holder, in which case you will be entitled to make a claim under the ATOL scheme (or your credit card issuer where applicable). If we, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL certificate, are unable to provide the services listed (or a suitable alternative, through an alternative ATOL holder or otherwise) for reasons of insolvency, the trustees of the Air Travel Trust may make a payment to (or confer a benefit on) you under the ATOL scheme. You agree that in return for such a payment or benefit you assign absolutely to those trustees any claims which you have or may have arising out of or relating to the non-provision of the services , including any claim against us, the travel agent (or your credit card issuer where applicable).

You also agree that any such claims may be re-assigned to another body, if that other body has paid sums you have claimed under the ATOL scheme.

4. ALTERATIONS MADE BY YOU. If you wish to change any of the details of your holiday after we have sent the confirmation, you may be liable to a charge of £25 per booking to cover any administration costs incurred.

5. CANCELLATIONS. Should you cancel your holiday, a cancellation fee is payable. The fee is calculated from the table below. A cancellation is regarded as valid only if stated in writing to Isle of Man Event Services Ltd. The lead name of the booking must also sign the written cancellation.

PLEASE NOTE: Refunds will not be made unless travel tickets and documents are returned to Isle of Man Event Services Ltd. Period before departure within which notice of cancellation or major change is received by writing to us or notified to you.

6. CANCELLATIONS OR CHANGES TO YOUR HOLIDAY MADE BY US. A. WITHIN OUR CONTROL. In the unlikely event that we cancel or make major changes to your confirmed holiday, we will offer you an alternative. If we are unable to offer you an acceptable B. BEYOND OUR CONTROL. Should we be forced to cancel your confirmed holiday, or make major changes to it we will inform you or your travel agent as soon as reasonably possible if there is time before your departure. You will have the choice of either accepting the change of arrangements, accepting an offer of alternative travel arrangements of comparable standard from us if available or cancelling your booked holiday and receiving a full refund of monies paid, In all cases except where the major change arises due to reasons of force majeure, we will pay compensation as detailed in the table above. Minor Changes include alteration of your outward/return flights/sea crossing by less than 12 hours, changes to aircraft type, change of accommodation to another of the same standard. Should we have to make minor changes to your holiday details you or your Travel Agent will be notified at the earliest opportunity.

C. FORCE MAJEURE. This means that we will not pay you compensation if we have to cancel or change your travel arrangements in any way because of unusual or unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control. These can include, for example, war, riot, industrial dispute, terrorist activity and its consequences, natural or nuclear disaster, fire and adverse weather conditions. Coastal resorts occasionally suffer from sea mists and fog. Should either your outward or return journey be delayed we recommend that you have sufficient funds to obtain additional meals and accommodation. Under certain circumstances these costs may be covered by insurance which is strongly recommended.

7. TRAVEL DELAYS. In the event of a delay to your departure, Isle of Man Event Services Ltd will assist as much as possible. Should your delay be greater than 12 hours, Isle of Man Event Services Ltd. will pay £20 for the first full 12 hours that a client is delayed, and £10 for each 12 hours thereafter, up to a maximum of £60 per person. This compensation will be paid provided you do not have any insurance cover offering the same or similar compensation scheme. This action will only be undertaken provided the delay has been caused by a direct result of strike, industrial action, or mechanical breakdown of sea vessel or aircraft.

Summary:

Spend a day on the remote Calf of Man accompanied by a Manx twitcher to help you identify the amazing number of bird species. There may also be an opportunity for you to meet the Warden.

PLEASE NOTE: • This trip is weather dependent. If the boat is unable to run or to land on The Calf of Man, then we shall instead take a wildlife walk to the spectacular coastal scenery of The Chasms.

• The trip is limited to 12 people.

Ever wondered how to use your compass properly? Does walking on open moors worry you? Would you like to know more about contour lines? If so, then this is the course for you. Day two of a two-day course (day one Wednesday) leading to the National Navigation Award Scheme Bronze Award. Please note numbers are limited to 12 for this course.

The Ballaugh Curragh is a unique wetland that is home to numerous plant and bird species. Steeped in history, this fascinating area is also home to a herd of red-necked wallabies. An opportunity for you to explore a hidden and little-known area of the Isle of Man.

Maughold Delight

Summary:

Leaving The Corrany, we head towards the beautiful Ballaglass Glen before following the Raad Ny Foillan past the Quaker burial ground. Continuing along the coast, we walk to Maughold Church with its extensive and famous collection of Celtic Crosses. An exceptionally beautiful section of coastal walking then takes us to the town of Ramsey.

Summary:

A beautiful walk which also gives you a glimpse into some Manx history. After walking along the Heritage Trail (an old railway track) to St John’s there will be plenty of time to explore the ancient seat of Parliament at Tynwald. The climb towards Lhergydhoo and the walk along the Raad Ny Foillan to Peel then gives you some stunning views of the west coast.

Coastal Splendour

Summary:

Arguably, Port St Mary to Port Erin is one of the best coastal walks in the British Isles. In places the footpath is narrow and steep, but the views, feeling of remoteness and great variety of wildlife makes it all worth while. The descent into Port Erin, with its numerous refreshment outlets, also brings a joy to the heart!

The Southern Peaks and The Whisky Run

Summary:

If you are looking for a challenge then this is the walk for you. From Port Erin there is a steady climb up to South Barrule. After admiring the views, hill fort and hut circles, you then join The Whisky Run as you descend to Castletown, the ancient capital of Mann.

Summary:

This walk has been organised by the Manx National Farmers’ Union as a means of thanking the 2013 Walkers for their generosity in raising money for the (Isle of Man) Agricultural Benevolent Trust after the devastation caused by the March snow. We would like to use this opportunity to thank the Walkers and the MNFU for their kindness.

Summary:

No visit to the Isle of Man is complete without greeting ‘The Little People’ at the original Fairy Bridge. Some very pleasant grassy tracks take us to The Fairy Bridge before we join some quiet lanes that lead us to the historic bay of Port Soderick. Stunning views accompany you as you return to Douglas along Marine Drive.

Such an auspicious title, but this walk gives you a unique opportunity for you to discover the numerous archaeological sites and keeills (ancient chapels) as part of a beautiful, thought-provoking and relaxing walk covering the Ballasalla, Santon and Castletown areas of the Island.

Summary:

Walking around the desolate glacial plain north of Ramsey is a unique experience.

Whilst there is some road walking, The Ayres Nature Reserve makes up for it. The site is internationally important for many breeding birds and the home for numerous rare plant species. The peace and solitude will make this walk a truly memorable experience.

Manx Northern Railway Walk

Summary:

This fascinating walk follows the track bed of the Manx Northern Railway which connected Ramsey with Peel. From St John’s, the walk explores sheltered cuttings, exposed embankments and two huge viaducts as the route ran along the west coast.

There is then a gentle walk to the village of Ballaugh, passing through a halt which was used exclusively by the Bishop of Sodor and Man.

Following the Raad Ny Foillan coastal footpath from Port Erin to Peel, this could be your outstanding finale for the 2014 Walking Festival. You climb three summits, each higher, wilder and more remote than its predecessor but the outstanding views, amazing diversity of wildlife and feeling of remoteness makes every step worthwhile. There will be ample time in Peel to reward yourself with an ice-cream and a kipper bap.

Are you up for the Raad Ny Foillan Challenge? Five days, twenty miles a day and the satisfaction of knowing you have circumnavigated an entire country’s coastline. An astounding variety of scenery and terrain helps to make every section of this longdistance footpath a memorable walk. Rugged cliffs, remote mountain moorlands, unspoilt glens and beaches, rare flora and fauna and places of historical interest are just a few of the delights you will encounter. The demanding Raad Ny Foillan (The Way of the Gull) is suitable for experienced walkers only. However, every step of your way will be under the expertise of an knowledgeable guide.
