Throughout Jackson, public art has become both more common and more widely celebrated. Our city has long been vibrant, but now, our streets, walls, and common spaces match our soul. Public art gives a human element to the cityscape, connecting those that walk its streets. When you head downtown, you’re sure to see the “Welcome to Jackson” mural by artist Scott Allen off of State Street, exemplifying the hospitable and colorful city you’re entering. Essentially, public art puts us all in a better mood and makes us feel more connected as a community. That’s something we can certainly get behind. Midtown mural as part of an Our Town grant through the National Endowment for the Arts, the vibrant façade of Fondren Fro Yo, and a variety of painted traffic signal boxes throughout the city. Allen believes that public art gives the city a vibe that’s as unique as those that inhabit it. On the corner of Capitol and Monument Streets, artists joined forces to help lift spirits of passersby with a collection of murals from artist Justin Ransburg and others. Local artist Eli Childers, along with friend and fellow artist Ahza Sanders, designed and painted a mural for Wilkins Elementary School on Castle Hill Drive, which depicts an array of black heroes—Marcus Garvey, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Barack Obama, Medgar Evers, and Mary McLeod Bethune. Childers’s mission was to add a bit of sunshine and inspiration to the area. Since, he has painted many more murals throughout the city for local businesses like Midtown’s Coffee Prose and Good Samaritan Center, and Downtown’s Arts Center of Mississippi. In Belhaven, you’ll find an uncanny depiction of celebrated Jacksonian Eudora Welty on the side of “her Jitney,” home to a grocery store she frequented. The piece is by Belhaven resident, artist Laurin Stennis. Flying into Jackson? You’ll notice creative depictions of famous Mississippians like Oprah Winfrey and Elvis Presley by Azha Sanders at Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport. PAINTING THE TOWN

ANDREA PATTERSON Andrea Patterson is the Marketing Director at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum and was involved in creating the state’s first museum district. You can often find her enjoying community-hosted events with her husband and daughter. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MEAL IN THE CITY? With seasonal ingredients and a rotating menu, The Manship will challenge you to try something new each time. But, you can’t go wrong with any of their wood-fired pizzas, especially if you add a fried egg! If you catch the general manager and sommelier, Steven, behind the bar, ask him to curate a bourbon flight for you.
As you venture to the Mississippi Museum of Art and Art Garden, you will see the work of Jackson artist William Goodman, on the north wall of the museum. This ephemeral mural was created by the artist to reference pop culture moments, and people who inspired him. It’s recognizable in Goodman’s signature graffiti style. “Subconscious View Mater” has become a staple of the museum’s identity. Like many Jacksonians who are dedicated to the public art movement, visual artist Will Brooks has researched and plotted a public art map presented by Visit Jackson. As you paint the town, pay a visit to some of our public art installations to experience more of what makes Jackson special.

IF YOU HAD 24 HOURS TO LEARN ABOUT LOCAL HISTORY, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? I’d start at the Old Capitol Museum, Jackson’s oldest building and the site of some of the most significant legislative moments in Mississippi history. Then, I’d head over to the Museum of Mississippi History which features galleries full of Mississippi stories. Next, I’d head to Fondren for a burger and milkshake at Brent’s Drugs, which has served our community for over 70 years. Stroll around the shops of Fondren like Studio Chane Screen Printing and The Beacon to find local treasures to take home. To end the day, head to Hal & Mal’s, where hopefully it’s Blue Monday and local musicians have come out to jam and celebrate. FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP? I actually love to shop at our local museum gift shops. They have great gifts! Child’s birthday gift? Mississippi Children’s Museum. Mother’s Day gift? CELTICFEST MISSISSIPPI MARCH 20 - 21 CelticFest has been held at the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum since the early 1990s to celebrate the traditional music and dance of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Brittany. The festival has welcomed many well-known Celtic musicians and artisans on multiple stages, workshop areas, exhibits and more. Here, you can take part in workshops on dance, music, the Gaelic language, genealogy, literature, culture, and art. One of the highlights of the festival is the Céilí Mór dance. LYNCH STREET CULTURAL ARTS FESTIVAL APRIL 24 - 25 Every April, Lynch Street comes alive, celebrating the culture of the city and West Jackson at the Lynch Street Cultural Arts Festival. Here, you’ll support the West Jackson Community Development Corporation as you dive into the rich history and tradition of Lynch Street, which was the major center for business and industry in the early 1900s. This two-day event begins with a cabaret-style banquet on the last Friday in April and a full, free outdoor festival on Saturday.
HAL’S ST. PADDY’S DAY PARADE & FESTIVAL MARCH 28 In the early 80s, Malcolm White grabbed some friends, dressed like Tennessee Williams characters and strolled up Capitol Street. He certainly started something. Since then, an entire culture has emerged around what is now the Hal’s St. Paddy’s Day Parade & Festival, a celebration of all things uniquely Mississippi and the rebirth of our capital city. Thousands of visitors and locals descend on downtown Jackson to let loose, march, commune and support our local children’s hospital. Throughout her career, Aisha Nyandoro has worn a lot of hats, including academic, evaluator, philanthropist and nonprofit visionary. Now, she serves as CEO of Springboard to Opportunities, an organization providing strategic, direct support to residents of federally subsidized affordable housing. “I was taught you grow where you are planted,” she says. “I have been very fortunate to build my career in the community that raised me; I am a proud product of Jackson Public School District. Working in my purpose, in the city that I love, is a wonderful blessing.” Springboard’s approach is designed to improve the quality of life and end the generational poverty trajectory. “Five of the communities that my organization serves are located in Jackson,” says Aisha. “Given the comprehensive holistic nature of Springboard’s work, we have an opportunity to partner with multiple organizations within the community, as well as the City of Jackson.” Aisha’s commitment to community and her passion for social change is evident in her volunteer work with Delta Sigma Theta and a wide range of board of directors and advisory councils on which she has served. Aisha has received multiple honors, including recognition as a fellow of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Leadership Network and Ascend at the Aspen Institute. She is a TedX speaker and her work has been featured in both print and news media outlets including: The Washington Post, Essence Magazine, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, CNN, MSNBC, Fast Company and The Nation to name a few. 22 |

In 2017, Salam Rida moved from Detroit to Jackson with her partner to work on the Ecoshed, a sustainability demonstration space that serves as an incubator for entrepreneurs and nonprofits interested in green industry and green infrastructure. Salam’s work on the Ecoshed led to helping create a Long Range Planning division within the City of Jackson’s Planning Department. “My work aims to inspire and imagine what a future sustainable Jackson can look like through urban design,” she says. “Jackson faces challenges that require creative, out-of-the-box thinking. Jackson has been an incredible space to pilot experiment urban design concepts.” Within a two-year period, Salam and others have managed to secure several million dollars in grant funding to realize visionary projects through the city’s Long Range Planning design team. “This creative and experimental design team tackles major issues within the city such as the future of food access, mobility and transit, stormwater flooding and the creation of public space,” explains Salam. Three notable projects include the Fertile Ground Project, the Congress Street Parklet and the Oneline Project. “Jackson has been an incredible city to experiment with creative urban design ideas. I’ve worked mostly within the research and academia setting for most of my career and being able to bring big ideas to a place that really needs them is fulfilling.”

As a teen, Jeff Good moved to Jackson from Salt Lake City and went on to attend Millsaps College and stayed put, planting deep roots in the city. As owner/operator of Jackson restaurants BRAVO! Italian Restaurant & Bar, Broad Street Baking Company and Sal & Mookie’s New York Pizza & Ice Cream Joint, Jeff Good’s face and welcoming persona is one that’s ever present in the City with Soul. When he’s not hard at work running his successful hospitality empire, Jeff serves as the Chair and founding board member of the Refill Jackson Initiative, a nonprofit workforce development program housed within a restaurant setting, Refill Café, located on the Jackson State University Parkway. Through Refill, Jeff and his team provide job training, soft skill development, social service and educational support, mentoring and employment services. He is on a mission to empower young adults to enter, navigate and stay in the workforce. Jeff is also a founding principal and managing partner of Soul City Hospitality, a Social Business Enterprise focused on developing Mississippi’s local food economy. PAVING THE WAY

Dr. Reed Hogan seemingly never sleeps. As an accomplished physician, husband and father of four young daughters, his schedule stays full. But, the Jackson native is on a mission to make his neighborhood and his city the best it can be. He pours himself into his work with the Belhaven Improvement Association, Friends of Laurel Street Park, Jackson United, the Community Foundation of Mississippi and his role as a co-developer of the new Belhaven Town Center. “I’ve been blessed to travel to and live in many great cities, but there is nothing like home and the sense of community that you experience in Jackson,” says Reed. “Jackson is a place full of talented individuals and so much untapped creative potential that I hope to be a part of pushing to fruition.” He has burned the midnight oil to beautify, preserve and secure Mississippi’s largest historic district and can often be found landscaping common areas, installing historic markers, meeting with city officials and planning events in his spare time. “I’m passionate about The Belhaven Historic District and Belhaven Town Center,” says Reed. “Nationwide, there has been a movement back into urban systems and the revitalization of traditional neighborhoods. Belhaven is Mississippi’s largest historic district and has been vital in creating the very fabric of the city. It’s primed to be the center of urban revival for the city.”

Omaha, Nebraska native John Tierre came to Jackson to study and play tennis at Jackson State University in 1995. It was here that he found his home. “After college, I chose to stay in Jackson because of the people,” he says. “The hospitality, along with the overwhelming support I received from my first small business showed me that there was no way I could pass up the opportunity to plant my roots in the capital city.” John settled in Jackson and started his career as an entrepreneur, opening a t-shirt printing business, Block Wear. In 2006, John opened a barber shop and hair salon while working in the music industry as a promoter and local producer. His success as an entrepreneur led him to venture into the restaurant industry. He set his sights on the building that was once Crystal Palace in the historic Farish Street District of downtown Jackson. Now it is home to his successful venture, Johnny T’s Bistro and Bar, which draws visitors from all over the world to the historic district. “Farish Street is on the horizon and that makes me super excited,” says John. “The Farish Street area is so rich in history that it’s truly an honor to be a part of its renaissance.” 24 |

As an architecture student, Jackson native David Lewis dreamed of moving away to a big, bustling city to build buildings. “Architecture school afforded me the opportunity to travel to some remarkable places and cities,” he says. “The more I traveled to these places, the more inspired I became to take Jackson’s innate potential and bring the city to a place of flourishment.” Lewis went on to work as an architect in Jackson and earn his Master’s degree in Urban Planning from Jackson State University. David soon joined the Greater Jackson Arts Council, where he oversaw a significant amount of public art projects, like the many vibrant murals seen throughout the city. He has worked on the Mississippi Light Festival, the Bicentennial Storytelling Photographic Gallery project and served as Vice Chairman of the Board for Team JXN. Now, in his role overseeing the Cultural Division of the City of Jackson, he has been instrumental in creating new and innovative opportunities to elevate the five cultural institutions and facilities owned and run by the City of Jackson, including Thalia Mara Hall, the Arts Center of Mississippi, Russell C. Davis Planetarium, the Smith Robertson Museum and the Municipal Art Gallery. “Our city has so much energy and excitement around arts and culture,” explains David. “What’s happening that is new and innovative drives much of the conversation—‘Have you seen the new mural?’ ‘Have you eaten at that new restaurant?’ Hearing and seeing the city all abuzz is electrifying.” David credits much of the excitement in the city to Mayor Lumumba. “Having a young and visionary mayor has allowed for new blood and young talent to enter the workplace for the city government,” he says. “That group of young people is intricately woven into the fabric of the young community at-large of our city. Having that voice present in so many spaces where change is and decisions are made is powerful and exciting. It prepares our city for a remarkable amount of healthy and progressive change.”

One of our beloved hometown heroes, famed writer Eudora Welty, spent her life calling Jackson home. The Jackson she knew and loved consisted of familiarity— neighbors, family. While what seemed a sleepy town was her home, it has long been a springboard for some of the greatest literary giants of all time—a fact she perhaps proved for us. “A sheltered life can be a daring life as well,” Welty famously said. “For all serious daring starts from within.” In the footsteps of Welty, many have followed suit from their home in Jackson, daring to write. Eudora Welty’s home and gardens, located in the historic Belhaven neighborhood, is where the Pulitzer Prize winner lived and wrote for 76 years. In 1925, when she was 16 years old, her parents completed the home, and the writer remained there until her death in 2001 at the age of 92. At The Smith-Robertson Museum, you can dive into the history of the African American experience in the Deep South while walking the halls writer Richard Wright walked as a schoolboy. Visit Jackson State University, where the renowned author Margaret Walker spent a 30-year teaching career. In her foreword to her beloved novel Jubilee, Walker thanked Jackson State College for permitting her to take leave to write her novel. It was here that she established an institute to preserve and interpret black history and culture. Today, the Margaret Walker Alexander National Research Center at JSU preserves African American history through archival records and “living memories.” In 1975, John Evans opened Lemuria Books, a local shop chock full of signed first editions, hardbacks, paperback and children’s books. Lemuria has stood the test of time and the rise of big box and online bookstores. The knowledgeable staff revel in sharing their love of reading and you can often catch authors on tour or browsing the collections themselves. “Here, we are booksellers, not just clerks,” says Evans. Lemuria is the perfect spot to get lost in a real book. “I’VE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR 45 YEARS AND DURING THAT TIME, SOME OF THE GREATEST WRITERS HAVE LIVED IN JACKSON,” says Evans, referencing Eudora Welty, Willie Morris, Margaret Walker Alexander, Ellen Douglas, Angie Thomas and more. “The support of these writers and others has played a huge part in the success of Lemuria. The concept for Elvie’s was inspired by executive chef and owner Hunter Evans’s grandmother, Elvie, a New Orleans native. This city library located in Evers’ former neighborhood, along with the street on which it sits, was renamed in memory of Medgar Evers. A lifesized bronze statue of Evers was erected at the library site by local citizens.

MANSHIP HOUSE MUSEUM 420 E. Fortification St. 601.961.4724 mdah.ms.gov Craftsman and former Jackson mayor Charles Henry Manship built this Gothic Revival house for his family in 1857. Restoration efforts continue at the site.
The “Merci Train” was given to the state of Mississippi by France after World War II. The wooden train cars were given in gratitude to each state by France after the war. Few of the boxcars still exist. The restored train car is located behind the Old Capitol Museum.

The Gertrude C. Ford Academic Complex houses the music, art and political science departments and features a 450-seat recital hall for concerts by the Millsaps Singers and the Chamber Singers, special guest performances and the popular Millsaps Arts and Lecture Series. The third floor Lewis Arts Gallery and new Hall Gallery (on the campus's western edge) showcase traveling art exhibits and work by Millsaps students and faculty.

MEDGAR EVERS HOME 2332 Margaret Walker Alexander Dr. 601.977.4440 A Evers was the first field secretary for the NAACP in Jackson at the time of his death, June 12, 1963. The small house and site of his assassination, and the neighborhood of similar houses that surround it, make palpable the very simple longings for freedom and opportunity that drove the Civil Rights Movement. As a museum and a house in a historic district, the renovated structure informs those who visit of the many sacrifices that took place in Jackson and in Mississippi, and presents a modern link in the succession of Mississippi landmarks that communicate the history of the state. Tougaloo, located on a beautiful site with centuries-old magnolias and oaks, played a vital role in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Students of history will appreciate the Lillian Pierce Benbow Room of Special Collections in the Coleman Library where thousands of documents, tapes, photographs and artifacts tell the story of the Civil Rights struggle.

The Boddie Mansion (1848), originally erected as a planter’s home, now houses the College administration offices. Woodworth Chapel (1901), built mostly with student labor, remains a center of religious life and cultural activity for the College and surrounding community. The African-American collection is considered one of the most exhaustive in the southeastern United States.
