And is it only because history is not known that we are repeating it?” Reena said. “We want to have occasions to lay out history, and more importantly, truth, fully on all sides and be able to address it in working towards positive social change for everyone.”

The events will touch on people and places that have made a marked difference in helping to close the gap of disparities in education, health care, women’s rights, criminal justice, trauma work, and more.

“It’s not just my story. It’s your story. It’s everybody’s story,” Reena said. “Empowerment is for everyone. We’re excited to bring to the table some fellow Mississippians and non-Mississippians. We’re not just focusing on ourselves but on the world. Because this world is small.” Reena notes that other than California, her father vowed he would never leave Mississippi because of his love for its people.

“I want it to be impactful in the way that it shows off our community, where visitors can come in and see that it’s at the heart of everything we do,” Reena said. “At the end of the day, it’s about helping each other. I’m hoping we can show the goodness of Mississippi.”

A Tuscaloosa, Alabama native, Keena Graham has had an extensive career with the National Park Service, including time at the Arlington House, the National Mall, the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, and the Russell Cave National Monument. Keena helped commemorate the Trail of Tears and the 50th Anniversary of the March from Selma to Montgomery. Now, she calls Jackson home, where she is the first superintendent of the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Home National Monument.

The Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center educates and enlightens the public about the roles of African Americans in Mississippi’s and America’s Civil Rights Movement.

The MIS SIS SIPPI MUSEUM OF ART presents its permanent collec tion in a new ongoing exhibition of more than 170 works that illuminates and expands the boundaries of Mississippi’s identity. Exploring the themes of ancestry and memory; migration, movement, and home; shared humanity; the natural environment; and liberty for all, the exhibition is inspired by Margaret Walker Alexander’s epic poem, “This is My Century: Black Synthesis of Time.”

Niche, a private organization that annually ranks schools in the United States, has once again ranked St. Andrew’s as the #1 Best Private K-12 School in Mississippi and within the top 6% of private schools in the country. Criteria includes academics, caliber of faculty, teacher/ student ratio, diversity, college prep, sports programs, clubs, and extracurricular opportunities. These annual national rankings are based on statistical information and reviews.

In 1973, trailblazing poet and writer Margaret Walker invited 30 leading black female authors to Jackson State University for a pioneering conference and bicentennial celebration of Phillis Wheatley’s “Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral,” the first-ever published volume of poetry by an African American author. Lucille Clifton, Nikki Giovanni, June Jordan, Audrey Lourde, Sonia Sanchez, and Alice Walker, among others, gathered to create and converse at Walker’s recently-established Institute for the Study of the History, Life, and Culture of Black People (c. 1968), now the nationally-renowned Margaret Walker Center.

A half-century later, JSU is proud to host the 50th Anniversary of the Phillis Wheatley Poetry Festival, November 1-4, 2023. Alongside ten original participants, a new generation of female writers like Jesmyn Ward and Angie Thomas will guide intergenerational discussions by, about, and for Black women authors, scholars, creatives, and the public, commemorating the legacy of 1973.

“I argue all the time that what Margaret was doing with the Black Studies Institute in Jackson, Mississippi, was very much Civil Rights activism, and it’s a pretty common notion within scholarship today that art is a form of activism,”Dr. Robert Luckett, Director of The Margaret Walker Center and History Professor, said. “That’s not a new idea, but Margaret certainly expressed it in the work she was doing at Jackson State.”

With major support from the Mellon Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities, the festival will feature four days of events, including authorled keynote sessions to listen to and participate in. The Margaret Walker Center will also invite submissions of creative writing and academic literary analysis from attendees to be featured.

Dr. Luckett points out that 2023 is also the 60th anniversary of the assassination of Margaret Walker’s friend, neighbor, and fellow Civil Rights activist, Medgar Evers. “When it comes to this emphasis on Civil Rights activism and the movement, Margaret was situated in the middle of it and knew exactly where she was and what she was doing,” he said.

“When she hosted this conference in 1973, it still wasn’t clear that it was safe to host a conference like this in Jackson, Mississippi. And still, all of these women came and cared deeply for the work they were doing.”

John Evans is the owner of Jackson’s treasured independent bookstore, Lemuria Books. He grew up in the Fondren neighborhood, just a stone’s throw from where his store sits in Banner Hall. “It was the early 70s, I was 24 years old, and I couldn’t find the books I wanted locally,” remembers Evans. “So I opened my own place.”

John says being a bookseller in Jackson has been extra special thanks to an extremely supportive community and rich literary history. “We have a lot to offer folks coming through town.”

Since 1946, Brent’s Drugs has been the Fondren neighborhood’s go-to spot for classic soda fountain treats like milkshakes, malts, banana splits, and ice cream sodas. Seasonal milkshake flavors are rotated monthly, with options like King Cake, S’mores, and Thin Mint. Don’t miss the Cookie Monster sundae, made with cookies and cream ice cream topped with hot fudge, Oreo cookie crumbles, graham cracker pieces, whipped cream, and a cherry on top.

Broad Street Baking Company & Cafe

1173 East County Line Road, Fondren

Broad Street Bakery is located inside Banner Hall on “the Hill” on I-55 Frontage Road South. Known for its delicious madefrom-scratch loaves of bread, pastries, and sandwiches, the bakery has indoor and outdoor patio dining options available, as well as counter service for placing orders and pick up. Stop in for breakfast lunch or dinner, and be sure to try one of their signature daily soups or quiches. If you’re in town during Mardis Gras season, Broad Street has made a name for itself in the king cake world (but don’t fret if you travel later in the year - they now carry their signature New Orleans-style treats year-round).

Campbell’s Bakery

Campbell’s, famous for its petit fours, tea cakes, custom cakes, and other offerings, has been a core part of the Fondren community since its opening in 1962 by Louis and Jessie Campbell. Over the last 60 years, the establishment has satisfied sweet tooths across central Mississippi with its case offerings. Purchased in 2022 by Jackson business partners and husband-and-wife duo Mary Sanders Ferriss Cavicchi and Damien Cavicchi, they are honoring the bakery’s long-held traditions as well as putting new twists on Campbell’s classics.

Coffee Prose

With two locations in the city - Highland Village and Midtown - Coffee Prose is part coffee shop, part used bookstore, and part frozen pop shop. Coffee Prose’s primary focus is on creating a gathering space that will bring the entirecity together. Sip on a specialty latte with literary inspiration – Moby Dick, My Dog Sip, and The Gatsby, for starters – while nibbling on their fresh baked goods.

Jackson native Eddie Wright is a United States Marine Corps veteran who served eight years. When the pandemic began, Wright lost his job in technology but got his feet wet with a new hobby - the art of barbecue.

“We used our hobby to bridge the gap and create a safety net. We had no idea it would turn into the beautiful food truck operation we have today,” Wright said.

And beautiful it is. Alongside quality ‘que, Wright was a selectee of the Kingsford “Preserve The Pit” Program in 2020, spotlighting pitmasters committed to preserving and investing in the culture, history, and future of Black barbecue in America.

The heart of our capital city is where government buildings, galleries, and historic architecture flourish alongside a growing residential and public art scene. Six state-of-the-art museums exist only a few blocks from each other, including the Mississippi Museum of Art, which hosts visiting exhibitions, a permanent collection, and an outdoor garden that’s open to the public. The Two Mississippi Museums - the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and Museum of Mississippi History - feature rotating exhibits on the rich history of the state and the Civil Rights Movement. In the lobby, stop by Top Chef Competitor Nick Wallace’s Nissan Cafe for a taste of the South with a twist. The International Museum of Muslim Cultures is the country’s first Muslim museum solely dedicated to Islamic history and culture. The Mississippi State Capitol - a Beaux-Arts, classical revival masterpiece - is worth a visit, as is the newly renovated Old Capitol Museum. At Thalia Mara Hall, a calendar of top-tier musical acts and performances by talents like the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and the once-in-four-year International Ballet Competition take to the stage.

Hungry? Downtown is an epicenter of culinary talent where you can find 40 restaurants and nightlife spots to explore, ranging from Southern cuisine to international menus and beyond. Swing by the Mayflower Café, Hal & Mal’s, Martin’s Downtown, or Sugar’s Place for a taste of classic Jackson fare. If you’re looking for after-hours drinks or networking space, 4th Avenue Lounge JXN is an upscale cocktail lounge and events venue that provides guests with first-class service.

On downtown’s Farish Street, take a tour through the Historic Farish Street District , the city’s African American cultural and business center until the 1970s. Celebrated sites include The Alamo Theatre and the Smith Robertson Museum & Cultural Center , the first museum dedicated to the African American experience in Mississippi. ABOUT

From June 10 – 24, 2023, The USA International Ballet Competition will bring in dancers from all over the world for a two-week, “Olympic-style” contest to showcase their technical and artistic skills for a chance at the ultimate prize - a spot with a renowned ballet company. Not only is the audience for directors and ballet enthusiasts, but USA IBC XII is also open to everyone that wants to attend and experience a rare opportunity to see some of the world’s best talent on one stage.

HISTORY

In 1964, the first International Ballet Competition premiered in Varna before rotating among the three cities of Varna, Moscow, and Tokyo. It wasn’t until 1975 that the real magic started happening in The City With Soul. The Jackson Ballet Guild invited Thalia Mara, the renowned ballet teacher, to develop a professional ballet company and school for the state of Mississippi. At the time, she introduced city leaders to the idea of ballet competitions as a means for economic and artistic development, helping them secure Jackson’s position with the USA IBC. In 1978, the nonprofit corporation, Mississippi Ballet International, Inc. (MBI), was created to produce the first International Ballet Competition in the United States, and in 1982, the United States Congress passed a Joint Resolution designating Jackson as the official home of the International Ballet Competition.

USA IBC provides many opportunities for intercultural exchange, star-studded performances, special events, and education on the importance of dance. At the Dance School, advanced and intermediatelevel dancers ages 12 and up can receive instruction from the dance world’s finest. Meanwhile, Teacher Training is offered for ballet and dance instructors to hone their craft. The artist-in-residence program brings in an acclaimed company for performances and a meaningful lecture series, while Master Classes provide students with a oncein-a-lifetime chance to be up close and personal with careered professionals.

In a reunion of past USA IBC medal winners, galas are held where performers take to the stage that launched them into stardom. Finally, CityDance is provided by generous donors, giving Jackson Public School District Students ages 7-12 a no-cost

With a drawing or painting instrument always at the ready, McGrigg went from being a student at the Mississippi School of the Arts to an internationally-showcased artist, with works featured in galleries as far away as New York City, Paris, and South Korea. Painting full-time at her home, her unique style of layering texture and color results in multidimensional pieces that equally ignite powerful conversation on race and reality.

Gavin Bird

Artist and muralist Gavin Bird grew up in a creative household, his dad giving him drawing and illustrating lessons from when he was little. Bird’s ever-growing portfolio of work can be seen all over town, including The Slab - a Mill Street DIY skate park, on the side of LD’s Beer Run, along the Museum Trail, and on the side of the bus for Capital City Kayaks, among other spots. Knowing art is a therapeutic outlet for himself, Bird hopes viewers can find calm and a creative spark in his work.

Justin Ransburg

Jackson native Justin Ransburg took his childhood love of Japanese art and animation and transformed it into a career as a professional artist. Along with sculptor Sam Clark, Ransburg realized there was a missing niche for other like-minded artists to gather, critique, and create together. The JXN Drawing Club was born, where free meetups at local coffee shops lead to newfound friendships and constructive instruction on drawing. You can catch Ransburg freehanding caricatures of Jacksonians and visitors alike, including chef and TV personality Carla Hall.

Azha Graham

Tattoo artist and muralist Azha Graham (pronounced like the continent) has always had an affinity for the fantastical. Taking a seemingly ordinary flower or creature and giving it a touch of magic, Graham is just as skilled behind a tattoo gun as she is in painting vivid murals in places like the Museum Trail and Jackson-Evers International Airport. A Fondren resident, she believes in the power of public art and gives people a fresh perspective of their city and surroundings.

The LeFleur’s Bluff Education and Tourism Complex is the shared campus between the MS Museum of Natural Science and the MS Children’s Museum, and, an innovative playground featuring 80 play activities. 73 of these features are inclusive to children with accessibility needs. The 30,000-squarefoot playground is separated into different play areas based on age, for children 6 months to 12 years old and features the Wedra, the first play structure in the world with this design. Shade structures cover 75% of the playground, making the area below up to 30 degrees cooler for year-round outdoor play. Spotter’s Adventure Trail (a museum walking trail) and The Den (an outdoor pavilion) opened in 2022.

This city library located in Evers’ former neighborhood, along with the street on which it sits, was renamed in memory of Medgar Evers. A life-sized bronze statue of Evers was erected at the library site by local citizens.

Evers was the first field secretary for the NAACP in Jackson at the time of his death, June 12, 1963. The small house and site of his assassination, and the neighborhood of similar houses that surround it, make palpable the very simple longings for freedom and opportunity that drove the Civil Rights Movement. As a museum and a house in a historic district, the renovated structure informs those who visit of the many sacrifices that took place in Jackson and in Mississippi and presents a modern link in the succession of Mississippi landmarks that communicate the history of the state. The “Merci Train” was given to the state of Mississippi by France after World War II. The wooden train cars were given in gratitude to each state by France after the war. Few of the boxcars still exist. The restored train car is located behind the Old Capitol Museum.

Outside, the FortenberryParkman Farm restoration and Bisland Cotton Gin, both circa 1860, tell the story of farm life in early Mississippi. Walk down Main Street of the “Small Town, Mississippi” restoration (circa 1920) and imagine a day in the lives of the people who once toiled and worshiped in these buildings. The Museum of Mississippi History encourages people to explore more than 15,000 years of state history. THE MUSEUM TRAIL

The Museum Trail 1s an approximately 3-mile multi-use trail connecting the Mississippi Farmers Market to the Mississippi Children’s Museum. The trail provides access to LeFleur’s Bluff State Park, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, the Mississippi History Museum, and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. Nearly two miles of the trail is Jackson’s first “rail trail” along the old GM&O line on the eastern border of the Belhaven and Belhaven Heights neighborhoods. The trail connects three parks and provides safe passage across 1-55 for pedestrians and nonmotorized vehicles.

This Greek Revival-style home is the oldest continuously-occupied residence in the city. Built around 1853 by Jackson Mayor James H. Boyd, it survived the devastating fire of 1863. The home may have served as headquarters for General William T. Sherman during the siege of the city by Union troops. James Hervey Boyd was mayor of Jackson for four two-year terms. Lovingly restored and furnished with period antiques by its present owner, the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Mississippi, The Oaks remains a treasured part of Mississippi history.

A National Historic Landmark and one of America’s finest examples of Greek Revival architecture, the Old Capitol building served as state capitol from 1839 to 1903, housing such notable events as the passage of the Ordinance of Secession. The Old Capitol was restored from 1959 to 1961 for use as the state historical museum. Restored to its original glory, the Old Capitol returned as a state house museum in 2009. It was again renovated in 2022.

Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center is a comprehensive depository of artifacts portraying African American Misissippians’ experience in the fields of history, art, music and literature. Situated on what was once the Boddie Plantation, Tougaloo College, a historically black, private, liberal arts institution, was founded in 1869 by the American Missionary Association. Tougaloo, located on a beautiful site with centuries-old magnolias and oaks, played a vital role in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Students of history will appreciate the Lillian Pierce Benbow Room of Special Collections in the Coleman Library where thousands of documents, tapes, photographs and artifacts tell the story of the Civil Rights struggle.

OTHER NOTABLE TOUGALOO SITES:

The Boddie Mansion (1848), originally erected as a planter’s home, now houses the college administration offices.

Woodworth Chapel (1901), built mostly with student labor, remains a center of religious life and cultural activity for the college and surrounding community.

The Tougaloo Art Collection features over 1,000 pieces, including paintings, sculptures, wood carvings and artifacts from around the world. The African American collection is considered one of the most exhaustive in the southeastern United States.
