Let Hamina’s thousands of stories enchant you
The world-class fortress city of Hamina is eye candy for those of an artistic eye. It is the oldest city on the East Coast and is built in a rare circular shape. In the middle of the circle, the city is dominated by the Town Hall, from which the streets of the old town and their colourful wooden houses, museums, churches, boutiques and cafes radiate. Walking through the historic streets of Hamina, it’s easy to imagine the clatter of horses’ hooves and the rattle of a horse-drawn cart.
You can see a lot in Hamina by foot. Explore the star-shaped fortress city’s rampart hiding places, stop by Galleria Ruutikellari (the gunpowder cellar) and admire the charming worldclass town from its fortress path. The fortress walls built at the beginning of the 18th century surround the city in all directions.
Go and marvel at the restored Hamina Bastion, which today serves as an international event arena. Experience the history of Hamina by walking the entire Fortress Trail, which starts from Lipputorni, goes around Hamina’s fortress ramparts and ends at the
Town Hall Square. The tiny, worldclass Hamina boasts a multitude of stories. Cosmopolitans and merchants from the East and the West used to meet here, in the storms of fate, conquerors were defied, flames were fought and progress was made from rags to riches - or sometimes the other way around. All the stories of Hamina’s old town are within your reach when you walk the circular streets with your senses open. There is an incredible amount of things to see in this charming little town, such as the neo-classical, Byzantine round temple said to have been designed by Louis Visconti.
On the terraces of Tervasaari on the Hamina coast, you’ll spend a relaxing summer’s day while the sun glistens on the waves of the sea, admiring the passing boats and marvelling at the world’s largest Finnish flag. You can sail to the archipelago with taxi boats or moor your own boat in the guest marina.
Built in a rare circular station plan, Hamina is straight out of a fairy tale! Fall in love with its sweet old buildings, thousands of stories and atmospheric cafes!
