Welcome to Kranj, lively city in the heart of nature
3 reasons why Kranj is love at first sight
Let´s meet at the rock, where Kranj was created like a balcony under the Alps. Having one leg in the city and the other in nature makes you want to sing at the top of your voice. Kranj is the capital of the Slovenian Alps and the cultural heart of Slovenia. It is the centre of the beautiful Gorenjska region.
#1 CULTURAL HEART OF SLOVENIA
As a true local from Kranj, I am extremely proud of our city. I want you to have an authentic experience and chat with many locals. We have quite an interesting character. Talkative and direct, romantic when it comes to rhymes, and sharp when it is necessary to win a debate. Back in the old days, we drew special pictures on beehives with a motif of the devil sharpening women’s tongues.
#2 ONE FOOT IN THE CITY, THE OTHER IN NATURE
The old town of Kranj is one of the most charming in Slovenia. At every step, you can feel the affection for culture and the greatest Slovenian poet, France Prešeren. His poem ‘Zdravljica’ (A Toast), the national anthem, celebrates friendship between all nations. Many peoples have crossed Kranj in its 6000-year history. Today, the old town host many events and a vivid art scene..
Pssst, I will gladly be your guide in this brochure. Browse the pages and we will meet every time I advise you something special.
Even today, we love spicy humour and a cheerful good mood, or as we say it - “prešern” mood. After all, this word in Slovenian is not only a synonym for joy but also the name of the greatest Slovenian poet, France Prešeren. Discover Kranj’s cultural atmosphere, the old city’s secrets and its rich history. Follow your heart because it will always bring you to the right place and among the right people. This is why my signature is like a heartbeat, pulsing in the rhythm of Kranj. France from Kranj
A unique feature of Kranj is its special location; the town rises above a 30-metre deep canyon. The locals like to spend their afternoons on hiking adventures – why not join them! The hills of Šmarjetna and Saint Jošt are ideal for a short trip and offer stunning views of the mountains and the valley. You will be particularly welcomed at the farmsteads in the countryside if you arrive on foot or by bike. Greenery is all around.
#3 THE CAPITAL OF SLOVENIAN ALPS Each inhabitant of Kranj with even a pinch of mountaineering spirit climbs the 2000-metre mountain of Storžič, which gives Kranj its characteristic image.. Join experienced alpine guides in the Alps. When the snow falls, Kranj is an excellent starting point for visiting our alpine ski resorts. Popular Krvavec is so close that we could almost call it the Kranj ski slope. Welcome to the capital of Slovenian Alps.

THE PLEASURES OF DELICIOUS CUISINE Kranj cuisine should not be missed. Most of the names of the typical dishes begin with the adjective ‘kranjski’ (originally from Kranj). Kranjska sausage and the local beer are a culinary couple. On a hiking trip it is great to stop at one of the farmsteads, while the market of freshly prepared delicacies called KRanska Kuhna invites you to visit the old town.
A CITY BREAK IN THE HEART OF NATURE
FRESH CREATIVE ENERGY
The unspoilt nature around Kranj offers a playground for hiking and cycling
The city is permeated by the urban artistic rhythm. Exhibitions open one after
all year round and for skiing in winter. The views of the mouintain peaks give
another; here is a new photo exhibition, while over there is an exhibition by

THE CHARMING TOWN AND ITS RESIDENTS Kranj has one of the most charming old town centres in Slovenia. The easiest way to feel the local vibe is by visiting the cafes and events. Hospitality in the countryside always inspires with its warmth and cosiness. People from Kranj are famous for being friendly and talkative - younger generations like to chat in English, while the elderly are more accustomed to German.
A LEISURELY STROLL AROUND THE SHOPS The boutique shops are filled with local products and a friendly atmosphere, and the vendors will quickly spice up your visit with an anecdote or some interesting advice. The ground floors of Kranj’s old houses maintain artisan activities, offering hand-made jewellery and unique clothing.
A CANYON IN THE HEART OF THE TOWN The people of Kranj live in harmony with nature and the power of two rivers. The Kokra River canyon just below the city is a unique phenomenon. A walk along the river banks is a refreshing experience. On the other side, the old town is embraced by the river Sava, a true paradise for anglers and fishermen.
GREAT MEN OF KRANJ The history of Kranj has been marked by several important Slovenes. In addition to the Slovenian poet France Prešeren, many other Kranj inhabitants have been renowned, such as the enlightened patron of the arts Žiga Zois, second greatest Slovenian poet and visionary Simon Jenko, painter Leopold Layer, publicist Janez Bleiweiss and the inventor of glass photography Janez Puhar.
ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN MASTERPIECES The towers of the main Gothic church and ancient defence towers shape the city. An important mark has also been left by renowned architects, such as Jože Plečnik and his student Edvard Ravnikar. Kranj is also the birthplace of industrial designer Davorin Savnik, famous for his telephone ‘Fittipaldi’, which is now an exhibit at New York´s MoMA.
MAGICAL SCENERY FOR SMALL AND LARGE EVENTS Each year on 8 February, the traditional Prešeren Fair transforms the old town of Kranj into the image of the 19th century, attracting 20,000 visitors. The locals have the most fun at the peak of the summer at the music festival Kranfest, while in November the Tunnels under the old town Kranj are turned into the ‘Wine Road’ gastronomic labyrinth.

The regional museum will impress you with discoveries from the early Stone Age and the times of the acient Greeks and Romans. Lamellar armour is a rarely-preserved finding of the local elite of the 6th century, just before Kranj became the largest centre of the Slavs in Slovenia. The museum trail reveals the city’s history at a glance.
The poet lived in Kranj in the middle of the 19th century. The best way to get to know him is to visit his house with its original furniture. The poet found his final resting place in a beautiful grove which is a memorial park of famous Slovenes from Kranj. The atmosphere is really calming.

The old town is rich with houses which are a vivid memory of the Bourgeoisie Era in Kranj. Take a look the most beautiful ones with a Renaissance touch: the Mitničar House, the Pavšlar House and the old Town Hall. They have beautiful paintings on their walls. For centuries they combined business activity on the ground floor with residential space on the upper floors. The Layer House is now a famous cultural meeting point.
Prešeren’s verses in his handwriting adorn the facade of the City Library, which is the true ‘living room of Kranj’. Here you can spend a whole day reading international magazines, books by Slovenian authors in foreign languages, or browsing the web free of charge. The modern architecture of the library is also very attractive and fits in with the building of post-war modernism.

Spend some time walking the streets, chat with vendors of organic food, try local cheeses, and do not miss the local artist’s exhibition or the alternative music concert.
Town cafes
Start your day in one of the lovely cafes of the old town. Coffee or tea? What else? A beautiful view, street hustle and bustle, a peaceful corner… Kranj has it all. Ask the staff for a weekly calendar of events in English and plan how to spend your days.
Town craf tsman workshops
Kranj has always been a well-known craft and artisan centre. Today you can observe the skills of handicraft masters making patchwork in the Ethno Gallery Desetnica, or discover a successful story of social entrepreneurship in the shop Štacuna Rokodelc.

Visit some of the textile designers in their small studios – maybe you will catch them while they are creating a new collection. A number of Kranj designers present themselves together in occasional POP-UP shops in the old town. The hidden House at the End of the Tunnel has an interesting range of designer clothing and modern jewellery.
In recent years, Kranj has been experiencing a real boom in sustainable supplies. Catch a Saturday market or a special organic market on Thursdays. The locals like to shop in authentic stores called Krajček and Eko škrnicl. Take a walk along Prešeren Street, which has local products from all over Slovenia.

The easiest way to find the concerts in the summer months is to prick up your ears and follow the music. One of the best venues for music events is Kihslstein castle, clubbing goes on in KluBar and Bazen. Kranj also has a strong alternative culture with its centre by the railway station; Trainstation SubArt is much more than a music venue, it is also a real community of local creators.

Climb the peaks with experienced guides, who love to talk about their merry mountaineering adventures.
One of the best ways to discover the beauty of Gorenjska is by bike. Marked trails lead past hospitable farmsteads. You can rent bikes at Kranj Tourist Information Centre. The cycling routes around Kranj are linked to the long-distance trail along the Sava River, which runs from its source to where it joins the river Danube. We recommend organised cycling tours – you can book guided tours with lunch and rent cycling equipment at www.visitkranj.com. Stay in Kranj and cycle around the Slovenian Alps!

The alpine peaks near Kranj also lead to more demanding climbing. Did you know that the first couple who made it together to the Roof of the World in the Himalayas were from Kranj? With their ascent of Everest, Andrej and Marija Štremfelj entered the Guinness Book of Records. With 40 years of experience they now work as guides, leading climbing tours on the walls, waterfalls and ridges.
The embrace of two rivers and the vicinity of lakes represent a real heaven for fishermen. You can get permits at the local fishing associations, who take care of the regulations and the preservation of the environment in the fishing areas. The river Kokra downstream is the perfect choice for lovers of fly-fishing. Numerous possibilities – boat fishing, spin fishing and whitebait fishing – are offered by the river Sava.
