The Capital of the Slovenian Alps

3 Kranj special features

Welcome to Kranj, a lively city in the heart of nature

#1 THE CAPITAL OF THE SLOVENIAN ALPS

Kranj grew up on the rock and is like a balcony under the Alps at the first sight. Kranj inhabitants are very proud of the Gorenjska region centre. Having one leg in the city crowd and the other in nature and on the mountains is one of the biggest advantages for the Kranj inhabitants and visitors. Therefore, we are often active by cycling and trekking, while in the evenings we enjoy in the theatre and other artistic gatherings.

Kranj is the only town in Slovenia with the view of Triglav, Stol and Grintavec, the peaks of the Slovenian Alpine mountains. You can experience mightiness and character of each of them accompanied by experienced guides or just admire them from the distance. With a mountain scenery of the three kings among the thousand-metre-high mountain peaks, Kranj is the capital of the Slovenian Alps.

PSST! Follow your heart because it will always bring you to the right place and among the right people. It would be my pleasure to be your guide of this brochure. See you while browsing, when I will suggest you something special. France from Kranj

#3 CULTURAL HEART OF SLOVENIA The old town of Kranj is one of the most charming in Slovenia. An interesting contrast are the high modernist buildings, behind which the city centre hides. At every step, you can feel the affection for culture and the greatest Slovenian poet, France Prešeren. Several interesting personalities have left their mark in the city in its 6000-year old history. Among the walls of the castle, towers and old town houses, cultural events and a vivid art scene take place.

Discover the cultural beat of Kranj, secrets of the old town and rich 6000-year old history. We wish you to experience the city in an authentic way. Reserve your time for traditional events, where Kranj shines in the most beautiful light and do not forget to taste the local delicacies. Chatting with the locals, Kranj character will jump out. We are very talkative and direct, romantic when dealing with rhymes and sharp when we want to win in a debate. Kranj tradition boast many interesting features that it is worth getting to know. Did you know that once we painted a device on apiaries, on which a real devil sharpened tongues of our women? We still today love to have a sharpened tongue and we swear to a merry mood. Last but not the least; Prešeren is the name that we always like to bow in memory of our greatest poet from the 19th century. Experience the capital of the Slovenian Alps and cultural heart of Slovenia. Mag. Tomaž Štefer, Director of Tourist and Culture Board Kranj

ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN MASTERPIECES The towers of the main Gothic church of St. Kancijan and ancient defence towers shape the city. An important mark has also been left by renowned architects, such as Jože Plečnik and his student Edvard Ravnikar. In The City

P R E Š E R E N ’S CI T Y

The old town centre is protected as a cultural monument. You can experience everything on a walk. Is there anything more beautiful than enjoying in the middle of galleries, cafes and small shops, while discovering architectural and cultural heritage? In the main squares around the world there are often statues of political or military leaders; Kranj, on the other hand, honours poets and artists. The biggest sculpture of Prešeren is located between the city theatre and the gothic Church of Saint Kancijan.

In Slovenian history, culture and national consciousness have played a key role. In Kranj, almost every corner pays tribute to France Prešeren, the greatest Slovenian poet, a cosmopolitan philanthropist marked by the spirit of the Romantic period. When he was not writing, he helped his fellow citizens with legal advice.

Khislstein Castle and cit y walls with defence towers

The old town is surrounded by the walls, once consisting of eight towers. Today, three of the towers, which once had a defence function, have been renovated and transformed into excellent venues for cultural experiences. The walls offer a view over the magnificent gardens and summer theatre of Khislstein Castle, which is one of the most beautiful scenes of cultural events in Slovenia.

Prešeren Prize Winners’ Galler y

The Pavšlar House hosts the eminent Prešeren Prize Winners’ Gallery, exhibiting the works of the recipients of the highest awards for fine arts in Slovenia and offering the best insight into the contemporary art scene. Close to the gallery, there is Kranj Prešeren Theatre, famous for its excellent ensemble and socially engaged performances.

Gorenjska Museum with the Museum Trail

Prešeren’s House and Prešeren Grove

The central regional museum will impress you with discoveries from the early Stone Age and the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Lamellar armour is a rarelypreserved finding of the local elite of the 6th century, just before Kranj became the largest centre of the Slavs in Slovenia. The museum trail reveals the city’s history at a glance and connects the four famous buildings: Prešeren’s House, Town Hall, Ossuary and Khislstein Castle.

The poet lived in Kranj in the middle of the 19th century. The best way to get to know him is to visit his house with its original furniture. The poet found his final resting place in a beautiful grove which is a memorial park of famous Slovenes from Kranj. The atmosphere is really calming.

Town halls

The old town is rich with houses which are a vivid memory of the early Bourgeoisie Era in Kranj. Take a look at the most beautiful ones: Mitničar House, Pavšlar House and old Town Hall, which are an important part of the “life in the city” identity. For centuries, they have combined business activity on the ground floor with residential space on the upper floors. The Layer House is now a famous cultural meeting point.

Kranj Cit y Librar y

Prešeren’s verses in his handwriting adorn the facade of the City Library, which is like a ‘living room of Kranj’. Here you can spend a whole day reading magazines, books or browsing the web free of charge and visit the film and music room. The modern architecture of the library is also very attractive in the building Globus, designed by the renowned architect Ravnikar.
