Your Ultimate Check List
Planning a wedding can be a little daunting, with so much to think about, organise and implement we have created the ultimate checklist to help you with the most important details.
18 months to go First thing’s first is getting that guest list sorted. You can’t determine the budget nor venue without this vital information. If you’re struggling for who to invite (or who not to invite), check out page 20 for our handy flow chart to give you a better idea of who are the VIPs and the VI nos! It’s numbers time. This is when all that detailed (and boring) spreadsheet experience finally becomes useful. Breakdown your budget within a spreadsheet to be able to see the big picture and understand priorities. The booking of the venue is one of the most important decisions to be made on our checklist. Wedding venues often get booked up well in advance, so be sure to shop around early. Take everything into consideration – themes, location, seating and don’t forget to check if they have a Registrar free! Now is the time to appoint your wedding party. These will be the people who will help you on the day. From bridesmaids and best men, to ushers and ringbearers, choosing those who will be most helpful will ease your mind on the day.
16 months to go If you haven’t already, now is the time to create a Pinterest account. You can create boards to visualise how you want your day to look and feel. So, decide the theme which best represents you both as a couple and get pinning! Book your florist. Flowers are a statement piece on your big day. One of the key trends this year is to have more potted plants rather than fresh cut flowers, helping to reduce your carbon footprint. Although don’t be disheartened, you can still impress with flower arches and outstanding flower installations. Other key things to book at this point in the process are your photographer, wedding band or DJ and caterers if needed. Get ahead and order your cake too, although this can usually wait until 8-10 months before.

6 months to go
A key and often unknown part of the pre-wedding planning is registering your intention to marry. You will need to book an appointment with your registrar where you will register your intention to marry, pay for your marriage certificate and give details of your wedding ceremony. Of course you don’t have to have a registrar conduct the ceremony on the day, there are some fantastic Celebrants in Lancashire who can help you create your dream ceremony, entirely bespoke to you.
Send out wedding invitations. They’ve saved the date but now make sure all your guests know the finer details of the day. Venue, timings, dress code and local accommodation should all be included.
Send out your save the dates! What’s a wedding without your loving friends and family there? If you’ve used our handy ‘wedding guest’ flow chart, then this process just got easier. With the time you’ve saved, why don’t you try your creative flair and design/make the invites yourself. It can be a fun activity with your future partner. The second biggest decision (we believe) is your wedding outfit. It’s likely from an early age you’ve dreamt of the perfect dress or suit, whether it’s classic, glamourous or something completely unique – make sure you allow plenty of time for alterations.
Taste testing. Probably the most fun part of organising a wedding is to make sure that everything being served on the day is absolutely perfect. From the canapes to the main meal (and not forgetting the cake!), you need to be sure the food being served hits the spot. This is the time to start pulling all the little bits together. Wedding rings, accessories, bridesmaid and groomsmen outfits, thank you gifts, and hair and make up trials can all be done now. Lancashire is the perfect place to celebrate your upcoming wedding with your closest friends, on a stag or hen do. Whether you hire a quaint cottage, visit a luxury spa or play a round of golf, it’s the perfect place to let your hair down and begin the final countdown to the day.

3. Don’t practice posing, practice getting lost in the moment. Wrap your arms around each other and forget everything else... your pictures will be beautiful natural moments. 4. Tell your photographer what type of pictures you love but avoid telling them what pictures to take. You have chosen someone who’s work you love, now trust them to do their thing. Every wedding is different, and photographers thrive with the freedom to get creative. 5. Nominate a bridesmaid or friend to keep an eye on your hair and make-up and carry spare hair pins and lipstick, especially just before your couple portraits. Most photographers will tell you if you need a lippy top up but it’s good to have someone on hand to help.

From cupcakes, to cheese wheels, chocolate ganache to a traditional fruit cake, choosing which flavour might not be the only decision to make when selecting your wedding cake. Sugar Fancies, Colne, give their top tips to help make the process easier; 1. With cakes, as with all suppliers, if you have seen a cake designer and you love their work, get in touch as early as possible. You don’t need to have the design finalised straight away as this can be done when you’ve made more decisions around the look of your wedding. Often cake designers work alone and therefore only take on a couple of wedding cakes per week so can get booked up quite quickly. 2. Whether you’re paying a professional to make your wedding cake or a friend has offered, always think about the presentation. The cake should be fully incorporated into your day, don’t stick it in a dark corner! This is especially important if you’ve paid someone to create your dream cake. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, think about the stand you might use or adding some flavour cards along with some foliage or flowers to tie in with your bouquet. 3. Think about how much you’d like to spend on your cake. The overall cost must include any delivery and set up charge along with the cost for a consultation or samples. If you’re thinking of having fresh flowers added to the cake, your wedding florist would usually supply these to the cake designer and would be an additional cost to factor in. When you contact wedding cake designers do explain your budget from the start. 4. Following on from budget DON’T choose a cake designer purely on price! Look closely at different designs and think about if you would be happy with them compared to another designer charging only slightly more. If you discuss your budget with your cake designer, they may be able to suggest options to reduce the overall cost of the cake order without compromising on the finish. If you have a large number of guests, you could have fewer tiers for the main cake with an extra cutting cake for additional portions. This is more cost effective as a cutting cake would be simply iced and served along with the main cake. 5. Do choose the design and flavours that you as a couple like! It’s your wedding day and it should represent you as a couple. If you really love a wacky flavour discuss it with your cake designer and see how it could be incorporated into your day. Don’t be scared to show your personality through your cake design. It’s great to make a statement. And although a four-tier cake might look imposing in your own kitchen when it’s sat in a large room at your venue it’s a great focal point.

Although your wedding day will likely be the happiest day of your life, it can also be one of the most stressful. With people coming and going, lots of things to think about, timings to stick to and the thought of getting your lines right in front of your family and friends! Do not fret, here are some helpful ways to relieve some of that stress and make sure you enjoy every moment;

1. Pull together a timeline for the morning
A rough guide to when you and your wedding party are getting make-up and hair done, when the photographer is arriving, and what time you need to get into your dress to be ready to do any final details all help on the day. Our tip – if you have time, get the wedding party’s hair and makeup done first so they can be free to run about with any last minute tasks.

2. Lay out your outfit the night before
Make sure you collate everything together in one area, including shoes and accessories. Not only will this help in the morning rush, but it may be useful if anyone, such as the photographer, needs access to them.
3. Make sure you have an early night With all the last minute preparations and excitement it is very easy to want to stay up and re-check everything or spend extra time with loved ones before the day, but your wedding day is a long day and those few extra hours will help carry you through.

4. Eat Breakfast
It might sound simple, but once the nerves and excitement settle in this is likely the last thing you will feel like doing. Try to have something filling, like cereal and fruit, but if all else fails a couple of pieces of toast is better than nothing!

5. Do something that calms you
This may be listening to some of your favourite songs, laughing with friends, meditation or sipping a glass of fizz. Whatever it is make sure you have what you need to hand and if you need anything else this is what the wedding party are for.

6. During the ceremony take a deep breath

Once the wedding starts everything can move very quickly, when you are stood together make sure you take a pause to take it all in. Look around the room, at your friends and family and most importantly that incredibly special person you are marrying.
7. Food to go
We may sound like a broken record, but you will need to eat, however taking time to enjoy the full wedding breakfast in between guests coming to see you or pulling you away can be difficult. Try to carve at least five minutes with your other half, but if all else fails ask the venue to pack it up for later.
8. Let your hair down
Once the speeches and formalities are over don’t forget to have fun! Grab your new spouse and hit the dance floor, chat with friends and family and fully enjoy this celebration of your love.
