Wildlife & Bird Watching

With 354 recorded bird species, native mammals such as red deer and otters, and millions of creepy crawlies that include tiger moths and common lizards, Lancashire’s wilder side offers up some great days out.

Ribble Coast & Wetlands

From the rugged moorlands of Bowland to the dramatic sands of Morecambe Bay, Lancashire is renowned for its birds and wildlife. The county’s varied countryside is home to world-famous breeding grounds and attracts birdwatchers from across the globe eager for a sight of its rare species. From the hen harrier in its hillside home to the red throated diver on the shores of the Irish Sea, Lancashire is a mecca for bird lovers throughout the year. Whatever part of the county you are exploring, take your binoculars and prepare to be rewarded for your patience by a real wildlife show. This is a part of England rich in nature as well as heritage and be prepared to be dazzled if you’re lucky you will see one of the country’s rarest plants – the Lady’s Slipper Orchid, Cypripedium Calceolus.

St Annes Beach and Pier Miles of beautiful sandy beaches, perfect for budding sandcastle builders and kite flyers. A visit wouldn’t be complete without a stroll down St Anne’s historic Pier.

Beacon Country Park, Upholland

The Leeds-Liverpool Canal, Burnley

Perfect for family picnics and impromptu games of rounders this beautiful park has been awarded Green Flag Status for its natural beauty. Look out for free family events throughout the summer.

Take a walk or gentle bike ride along the Burnley Straight Mile, one of the ‘Seven Wonders of Britain’s Waterways’. You’ll see a lovely mix of rural and industrial heritage as you stroll or wheel by.

Great Promenade Show, Blackpool

Samlesbury Hall

Take a walk along Blackpool’s famous promenade to see a dazzling array of lighting features, sculptures and structures. And don’t miss the Comedy Carpet right outside The Tower – it will give you a case of the giggles!

Happy Mount Park Splash Park, Morecambe Open daily throughout the summer – just bring your swimming stuff! The free brass band concerts every Sunday throughout the summer are a blast!

Ribble Valley Sculpture Trail The 20 sculptures aren’t the only thing to see in this nature reserve – be on the look-out for kingfishers, salmon, otters, bats and even deer.

Rossall Tower, Fleetwood Leaning into Morecambe Bay, the area’s newest attraction offers an impressive view point and is in a prime position for bird watching. If you like this try Rivington Pike near Chorley for great inland views.

Discover the history of Samlesbury Hall and Gardens, complete with ghosts, Henry VIII and witches. (Small fees apply for tours and events)

Rivington Pike With a fascinating and fantasic history involving the decadent Lord Leverhulme, who built a retreat complete with fabulous chinese gardens here, it’s well worth a visit. See if you can climb all the way to the famous ‘Pike’ in clear conditions from the tower you can see the Cumbrian Fells in the Lake District, Blackpool Tower and the Isle of Man.

Pendle Sculpture Trail The fascinating true story of the Pendle Witches is being told in “stone”. The Pendle Sculpture Trail has ten ceramic plaques; enjoy finding the plaques as they are presented in a treasure trail style quiz to be hunted down and found!

Bay Cycle Way Cycle the stunning coastline of Morecambe Bay on the brand new Bay Cycle Way from Glasson Dock to Barrow.

Animal attractions

With so much open countryside it’ll be no surprise to learn that Lancashire is a haven for wildlife, both in the wild and at animal attractions or zoos. Explore

Lancashire is home to a number of castles, towers and ruins spread out across the county. The famous Lancaster Castle, owned by Her Majesty The Queen.

Whalley Abbey, 14th Century Cistercian Abbey ruins set in beautiful gardens and woodland beside the River Calder in The Ribble Valley.

Clitheroe Castle in the Ribble Valley has overlooked Clitheroe for over 800 years and with the Castle museum down below, this is an interesting day out for the whole family.

Hoghton Tower, the ancestral home of the de Hoghton family, has been part of Lancashire’s landscape since 1565. Darwen Tower, built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

Historic Houses

Discover the history and stories behind Lancashire’s grand houses and halls including the story behind the knighting of Sir Loin at Hoghton Tower; how JRR Tolkien was inspired by the countryside around Stonyhurst College; the tragic tale of the white lady at Samlesbury Hall and the gruesome severed head at Towneley Hall.

Browsholme, Hoghton and Leighton are still family homes and have passed through generations and still display wonderful possessions created by world renowned artists and craftsmen.

Follow in Shakespeare’s footsteps and visit one of Lancashire’s finest Tudor buildings, Rufford Old Hall. Be wowed by this National Trust property with its fantastic furniture, arms, armour, tapestries and the carved oak screen, a rare survivor from the 1500s.

Visit our very own ‘Downton of the North’, Gawthorpe Hall was redesigned in the 1850s by Sir Charles Barry, designer of the Houses of Parliament and the ‘real’ Downton Abbey, Highclere Castle.

Sheltered by ancient trees, bordered by rolling lawns and framed by high stone walls, Turton Tower is a wonderful place to explore. Beyond the stately buildings there are formal gardens and extensive grounds to explore, many featuring adventure playgrounds, sculpture trails, seasonal flower walks and farm animals – perfect for all the family to enjoy.
