Celebrate 125 Years with Mt. Gretna
This small community is a must visit any summer - but this year’s calendar is full of celebration and festivities. Make sure to find time to explore this quaint summer getaway!
Just relax on a bench or stroll through the picturesque streets to enjoy the beauty, tranquility, history and broad array of activities that Mt. Gretna offers. What started as a summer picnic grove and home to the PA National Guard in 1885 became a well-known resort area and home to the Pennsylvania Chautauqua and a United Methodist meeting ground known as Camp Meeting in the early 1890’s. The Chautauqua – with its full schedule of summer arts, education and cultural programs that are open to the public – and the Camp Meeting – with its own array of summer programs and activities – continue to this day. Both areas, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, are filled with distinctive, century-old cottages located on tree-lined streets. This year, Mt. Gretna celebrates the 125th anniversary of Mt. Gretna Campmeeting and Chautauqua. There are many activities planned for the year including a family skating date at the Mt. Gretna Roller Rink. The roller rink is the oldest remaining building in Mt. Gretna. built in 1890 as the Farmers Encampment, it was the original home to PA Farm Show.
The Jigger Shop, a summer attraction, will be unveiling an ice cream treat to celebrate the 125th anniversary. This unique ice cream shop has been offering unriviled ice-cream creations for over 100 years. The Mt Gretna Tabernacle hosts yearly a Heritage festival and a Bible Festival highlighting worship and concerts. A major supporter of the arts, First Friday Art walks are held each month - featuring the works of local artisans. Each summer, the community is home to the Mt. Gretna School of Art. In August each year is the Mt. Gretna Outdoor Art Show. The show is a major attraction for artists, music and visitors from near and far. Gretna Theatre is a professional summer theatre at the historic open-air Gretna Playhouse. Performances include Broadway musicals, comedies, musical revues as well as children’s theatre. Take in world-class jazz and classical music performances at Gretna Playhouse. Music At Gretna’s more than 40 years of performances have featured dozens of

Grammy Award winners and nominees. To celebrate the 125th anniversary, the first concert will feature a brass band playing music from the 1890s. Timbers Restaurant and Dinner Theater offers a summer musical review with dining in their intimate lounge. Mt.Gretna is also surrounded by plentiful hiking and biking trails and other venues for the outdoor enthusiast. The Mt. Gretna Bird Club meets every Friday morning. Mt. Gretna Lake & Beach is perfect for swimming, canoeing or walking the shores of this beautiful lake. The Clarence Schock Memorial Park at Governor Dick Environmental Center. This 1,100-acre forest and nature center offers educational programs, guided hikes, nature walks and outdoor events. Explore Mt Gretna’s museum located at 206 Pennsylvania Ave. Open from 1 - 4 pm on weekends during the summer. Learn about the two amusement parks that once existed in Gretna with a giant roller coaster, carousels and million gallon swimming pool. View pictures and memorabilia from the historic Conewago Hotel that overlooked the lake in the early 1900’s and the narrow gauge railroad that brought passengers to its doors from the main Gretna train station. This tiny community is rich in history and entertainment that you will love to explore. LeSorelle Porch & Pantry is a quaint, casual restaurant in the Chautauqua area that has a large, loyal following among Mt. Gretna residents and visitors. Just down the street, you’ll find The Gallery at La Cigale Features the works of local artists and artisans. Enjoy a beverage or meal under the trees on the Mt. Gretna Hideaway’s large deck or inside this popular eatery.
