1. Across Northern Aukštaitija The pride of northern Lithuania is Biržai castle, home-brewed beer, and karstic sinkholes. The Biržai Regional Park, which protects the karstic relief of the environs, has been established there. There is the longest footbridge (525 m) across the oldest artificial Lithuanian Lake Širvėna in Biržai connecting the city with the Astravas estate. In Sėla museum and Radziwiłł castle, one can get acquainted with the exhibits of the city and environs and see an authentically recreated tile stove of the castle. The route Road of Beer will take you to several breweries, including Biržų Alaus brewery, which is one of the oldest breweries in Lithuania, where you can taste as many as 13 kinds of beer of different proof. The Lėvuo and the Mūša Rivers, watermills and windmills, sites of old estates make the landscape of Pasvalys land more attractive. The inhabitants of Kupiškis take pride in Palėvenė Church and the monastery complex, the Noriūrai manor house. The pearl of the cultural heritage of this part of the country is Rokiškis manor-house-museum (which houses an interesting collection of the clothes that were worn at estates and other exhibits) and next to it, in the former officina, a unique exhibition of Lionginas Šepka, Lithuania’s most famous 20th century rural wood carver and creator of over 1,500 various size wooden sculptures, is mounted. A onekilometre-long avenue connects the estate to the most impressive spacious rectangular square, now dominated by the red brick neogothic style Church of St. Matthew (1868–1885). 2. Across Hilly Aukštaitija that Abounds in Lakes This land is also referred to as Lithuanian Switzerland. The Aukštaitija National Park (40,600 ha), the first and largest park in Lithuania, has been established there. The Park is studded with more than a hundred sparkling lakes connected by 34 rivers and streams, forests, rolling hills, ethnographical farmsteads and old villages. The impressive landscape and magnificent nature offer excellent opportunities for relaxation and travelling: on foot, on bicycles, by boats or cars. The Administration of the Park and the Visitor Centre are located in Palūšė. You can book sleeping accommodation, meals, and rent tourist equipment there. The highlights of the cultural objects are as follows: Palūšė Church, the old watermills of Ginučiai, Minčia, the Museum of Beekeeping in Stripeikiai, the old villages of Meironiai, Šuminai, Varniškė, Strazdai, Ladakalnis Hill, and the Reškutėnai Museum. On the edge of Ignalina district, not far from the Belarus border, there is the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. The town of Dusetos on Lake Sartai cherishes centuries-old traditions of winter horse races, usually held on the frozen lake. The Gražutė Regional Park has been established in the lake district of the upper reaches of the Šventoji (70 lakes) and around the Antalieptė Sea. It offers excellent opportunities for travelling on bicycles, on foot, by canoes or motor cars. The centre for water tourism is located in Bikėnai. The most impressive building is the stone neo-romantic church (the beginning of the 20th century) in the town of Salakas (on Lake Luodis). Zarasai is also the land of lakes. The old (ca 2000 yr.old) oak tree, the oldest one in Lithuania, can be seen in the village of Stelmužė on the border with Latvia, 13 km north of Zarasai. A network of the culinary heritage has been developed in this region. 3. Across Molėtai and Anykščiai Environs Molėtai and Utena area abounds in lakes. It offers excellent opportunities for relaxation and watersports. There are many interesting objects of cultural heritage there: historical settlements of Dubingiai, Videniškiai, Giedraičiai, the Alanta estate, and hill forts, not far away from Molėtai there is the Molėtai Observatory, the only one in Lithuania, and the Ethnocosmologic Museum, an old celestial lookout. Two regional parks: Asveja (on the longest lake in Lithuania – Lake Asveja) and the Labanoras Regional Park, the largest park in the country. Labanoras is a large old forest with chains of lakes (over 285 lakes), meandering rivers, raised bogs and swamps. It abounds in earthly blessings, a large variety of animated nature, offers excellent opportunities for engaging in ecotourism. By lakes you can sail to the lake district of the Aukštaitija National Park and by rivers – as far as Vilnius. There are plenty of camping sites and farmsteads of rural tourism there. The town of Labanoras (14th century) takes pride in its belfry and the wooden Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (the 18th19th century), there is also a hotel and the Park Visitor Centre there. North of Molėtai district you will find an interesting Anykščiai region, which is rich in its natural and cultural heritage. Nature is magnificent and there are many interesting sites to visit there. The Anykščiai Regional Park covers the most picturesque places. In the town of Anykščiai you will find the memorial museums of writers Antanas Baranauskas, Antanas Vienuolis and Jonas Biliūnas as well as Laimės Žiburys (Jonas Biliūnas tombstone), Šeimyniškėliai hill fort with the newly recreated wooden castle, a Horse Museum (housing many unique exhibits), the legendary Puntukas rock lauded in a famous poem Anykščių Šilelis (Anykščiai Forest) by Antanas Baranauskas, Lake Rubikiai with its 16 islands, the narrow gauge railway museum, exposures of quartz sand, mythological rocks, and other sites. Foot and cycling tracks, horse riding, trips by narrow-gauge railway to Rubikiai, a rest on the Šventoji River and lakes await you there. 4. Across Central Lithuania This is the most fertile region of Lithuania encompassing Panevėžys and Kėdainiai districts, where agricultural traditions are cherished. South of Panevėžys, along the Nevėžis valley, there stretches the Krekenava Regional Park. The highlights of the region are as follows: Pašiliai farm of aurochs (established in 1969), Upytė Museum of Flax (situated in a mill), the Čičinskas Hill lauded in legends, the old Vidugiriai Barn, a museum dedicated to book-carriers in the village of Ustronė. Agricultural Academy in Dotnuva is located in the former manorhouse. Dotnuva Church and monastery complex, the Park of Dendrology in Skinderiškis, a rich collection of liturgical attributes (vestments, vessels, bells, lamps, etc.) collected by Father Stanislovas and the place marking the geographical centre of Lithuania (a symbolic border between Samogitia and Aukštaitija) in the village of Roščiai are worth a visit. Kėdainiai is one of the oldest Lithuanian cities (the 15th century). Its Old Town (covering 87 ha) is an urban monument. The old planning and the name of Didžioji Rinka (Great Market) (the 17th century), buildings (the 16th-17th century), the Church of St. George (the 15th century), the Evangelical Reformed Church (the 17th century) and vault with the Radziwiłł family mausoleum have been retained, the museum of that part of the country is rich in exhibits.

The region covers the largest part of the Central Plain and the Aukštaičiai Upland of Lithuania. In the north and north-east it borders with Latvia, in the east – with Belarus. In the northern part, in the Mūša-the Nemunėlis plain, there stretch fertile, clayey plains and karstic Biržai-Pasvalys region. The north-eastern part has the largest number of lakes in Lithuania. There are Lake Districts of Zarasai, Dubingiai (Asveja), Molėtai, and Ignalina-Kaltanėnai here. The Aukštaitija National Park, which is the largest national park in Lithuania, has been established in the region. There are many forests and woods in the environs: Žalioji Giria (Kupiškis-Panevėžys region), Labanoras (Molėtai-Švenčionys region), Ažvinčiai (Ignalina district.). Northern-eastern Lithuania is especially suitable for recreation. Water sports in lakes and rivers and ecological tourism are developed. The largest rivers are the Nevėžis and the Šventoji. The largest city of the region is Panevėžys. The highway VIA BALTICA runs via Pasvalys and Panevėžys.
