Exhibitions

Water 24 Jun - 8 May 2016, City Museum of Ljubljana Through four main themes and various timelines, the exhibition presents the importance of water. It is essential for our survival, the mobility of humans, goods, ideas and knowledge, our mythologies and beliefs, art and language. The exhibition is also discussing water cycles in nature, their meaning and ecology. The first three themes build their stories through museum artefacts among which a larger wooden boat, presented to the public for the very first time, deserves a special mention. Other artefacts also include a rich glass collection, famous artworks by Slovenian artists and a selection of the most important artefacts from the collection of the Potočnik family, originating from the riverbed of the Ljubljanica. The fourth theme is presented with an interactive experimental element, primary intended for children’s experiential workshops. The controversial Shroud of La Higuera is on public display for the first time. The world’s premiere is taking place in the Treasury of the City

The Biennial, held since 1955, is one of the world's most acclaimed events of its kind. The thematic point of departure for the main exhibition of this year's Biennial is 'Over you / you', a quick note borrowed from the corner of a drawing by the German contemporary artist Martin Kippenberger that led to all kinds of considerations that have come to underlie the conceptual framework of this year's edition of the Biennial. The main exhibition, whose curator is Nicola Lees, brings together both traditional and contemporary forms of graphic production, emphasizing their common political and aesthetic foundations. The Biennial's main exhibition is accompanied by exhibitions of work by the winner of the 30th edition of the Biennial and a number of other exhibitions and artistic events held at various exhibition venues. www.mglc- lj.si/bienale/ bienale_2015

Slovene National Theatre in Maribor: Peer Gynt - ballet 24 Nov at 19:30, Cankarjev dom cultural and congress centre

The Slovene National Theatre in Maribor’s current production of Peer Gynt is choreographed by Edward Clug, a dancer and choreographer trained in classical ballet, but committed to speaking a dance language combining various contemporary aesthetics and elements from different cultural backgrounds. Clug’s choreographic interpretation of the protagonist of Henrik Ibsen’s famous play hovers on the edge of objective surrealism, the rational absurd, and witty self-irony, which represent Peer Gynt’s fundamental psychological traits. The ballet is set to the original music that Edvard Grieg, today the best-known Norwegian Romantic composer, wrote for the premiere of Ibsen’s play in 1876. Choreographed by: Edward Clug, Music by: Edvard Grieg, Set design by: Marko Japelj Costume design by: Leo Kulaš
