Saša J. Mächtig: Systems, Structures, Strategies - retrospective exhibition 26 Nov - 20 Mar 2016, Museum of Architecture and Design

The designer and architect Saša J. Mächtig is considered to be one of the most important figures in Slovenian industrial design. His best known work is the K67 kiosk, a multi-purpose modular unit that became a familiar feature of cities and towns across Slovenia and a number of other central European cities in the second half of the 20th century. The exhibition Saša J. Mächtig: Systems, Structures, Strategies offers a retrospective overview of Mächtig’s major design achievements, which include, among others, the Žaba (Frog) litter bins, the Ekos recycling containers, wall-mounted acoustic phone booths, and a number of other street furniture elements. 31st International Biennial of Graphic Arts 28 Aug - 3 Dec, International Centre of Graphic Arts, other venues The thematic point of departure for the main exhibition of this year’s Biennial is ‘Over you / you’, a quick note borrowed from the corner of a drawing by the German contemporary artist Martin Kippenberger that led to all kinds of considerations that have come to underlie the conceptual framework of this year’s edition of the Biennial. The main exhibition, whose curator is Nicola Lees, brings together both traditional and contemporary forms of graphic production, emphasizing their common political and aesthetic foundations. The Biennial’s main exhibition is accompanied by exhibitions of work by the winner of the 30th edition of the Biennial and a number of other exhibitions and artistic events held at various exhibition venues. www.mglc- lj.si/bienale/bienale_2015

Water 24 Jun - 8 May 2016, City Museum of Ljubljana Through four main themes and various timelines, the exhibition presents the importance of water. It is essential for our survival, the mobility of humans, goods, ideas and knowledge, our mythologies and beliefs, art and language. The exhibition is also discussing water cycles in nature, their meaning and ecology. The first three themes build their stories through museum artefacts among which a larger wooden boat, presented to the public for the very first time, deserves a special mention. Other artefacts also include a rich glass collection, famous artworks by Slovenian artists and a selection of the most important artefacts from the collection of the Potočnik family, originating from the riverbed of the Ljubljanica. The fourth theme is presented with an interactive experimental element, primary intended for children’s experiential workshops. Guided tour in English on Sunday, 8 November at 13:00 Open 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00 21:00. Closed: Mondays, 25 Dec and 1 Jan Giles Round: Ljubljana, 1955 28 Aug - 3 Dec, Jakopič Gallery Exibition within the scope of the 31st Biennial of Graphic Arts Jakopič Gallery hosts Giles Round. The English artist’s project is the interpretation of the history of the Biennial of Graphic Arts. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays. Tomaž Lavrič: The Magical Language of Comics - exhibition 18 Nov - 14 Jan 2016, CD Gallery Cartoon artist, caricaturist and illustrator Tomaž Lavrič boasts a fascinating

career and rich bibliography. Highly proficient in all elements of comics, Lavrič’s visuality can switch between narrativeness and realism, or alternate between constructivist abstractness and tender lyricism. The cartoonist draws from various elements of visual culture, ranging from cinema and painting to drawing and video, fusing them idiosyncratically in a language that is very much his own. The exhibition thus highlights those series that establish the particularities of this idiom. Open: 10:00- 19:00, Sundays 10:00- 14:00 Branko Čeak, Domen Pal, Jože Maček: Ljubljana. A Different Perspective. 28 Nov -13 Dec, Cankarjev dom congress and cultural centre “And while one begins drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes the brainstorming sessionyields a plan: let’s direct all our lights into the spaces of our city that are invisible to the eyes of the broader public, purposefully overlooked or seen from certain viewpoints. However, there are alternative, as yet unseen and surprising perspectives. We have lights galore and the urban spaces are incalculable.” www.unknownljubljana.com Open: 10:00- 19:00, Sundays 10:00- 14:00 Plečnik Collection The new permanent exhibition at the Plečnik House in Trnovo presents the most important projects of the late architect. Plečnik’s creativity comes to life through the plans, models and photographs of his creations such as the Zacherl House in Vienna, Prague Castle, the National and University Library in Ljubljana, the Ljubljana Central Market, Žale Cemetery, the Church of St. Michael at the Ljubljana Marshes and numerous other masterpieces. Several plans of Plečnik’s never realized visions are also

on display. The Cathedral of Freedom, the master’s vision of the Slovenian parliament, is especially worthy of our attention. Guided tours: every hour, on the hour (the last guided tour at 17:00). Groups must not contain more than seven people. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays. One planet, one water, photography exhibition 3 Dec 2015 -1 Feb 2016, Tivoli Park, Jakopič Promenade Water has been associated with the creation of our planet and the existence of human beings. A building block of the planet Earth, water covers almost three thirds of its surface -which is almost the same ratio as within the human body. Water was also precisely what inspired these photographers, travellers and humanitarians to take pictures and display them at the One Planet, One Water exhibition in Ljubljana’s Tivoli Park. Their works demonstrate beauty, remind us of the injustices, chronicle life and search for inspiration.

Archaeologists found more than 10,000 artefacts from different historical periods in the Ljubljana Marshes. The most important find of all is the world’s oldest wooden wheel, dating approximately between 3,350 and 3,100 B.C. The wheel is surprisingly accurate and extremely skilfully constructed. The taking of wood contraction and expansion into account, the manner of attachment and joining and other details point to an exceptionally skilled master craftsman and a real connoisseur of various types of wood. The technological perfection of the wheel and the axle besides it age are what places these items at the very pinnacle of world cultural heritage. The Oldest Wooden Wheel with an axel in the world is exclusively put on display for one month. Open 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00-21:00. Closed: Mondays, 25 Dec and 1 Jan.

The British band The Editors are wellknown for their hit songs Munich, Blood, Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors, and many others. Since the release of their debut album in 2002, they have been defying genre categorization by trying to develop a unique sound, which could be described as a dark brand of guitar rock. Music reviewers and critics have compared them to the legendary Joy Division and U2. Earlier this year, the Editors have released their fifth album, In Dream, on which the band take their rock sound to a new level by drawing inspiration from '80s electronic music. Over the years of their career, The Editors have sold more than two million copies of their albums, created hit songs that have scored high on the European charts, and performed on major stages across the world.

Monkey King is a magical character with supernatural powers: he has diverse magical skills, he is shrewd and dexterous, and the only one that can defeat him is the Buddha. He does particularly well as an escort and aide of the famous Buddhist monk Xuanzang, also known by his spiritual name of Tripitaka, who is on a mission to bring original Buddhist scriptures from India to China. The China National Peking Opera Company was founded in 1955 on the initiative of the famous Peking opera actor Mei Lanfang, who was appointed the company’s first president and was admired by the likes of Bertolt Brecht, Charlie Chaplin, and Albert Einstein.
