1. The Importance of Reducing, Reusing and Recycling
We started this session by screening a video showing Loggerhead Turtles hatching at Golden Bay which led to a discussion focusing on how our waste is badly affecting turtles. Our speaker highlighted the importance of effective waste management and its benefits to marine life. Later, we provided the children with a batch of old newspapers where we emphasised the importance of reusing and storing items for future use rather than disposing of immediately. The participants started to work on their activity by creating a papier-mache mix. This activity was held over two days in order to have enough time for the papier-mache turtle to dry before we could proceed with the painting activity. Eventually the children’s painted turtles were displayed in all Blue Flag beaches in Malta adjoining a banner encouraging the public to keep turtles safe.
