A 150 km nature experience on foot round the island of Mors in the Limfjord. A trip that takes you through a completely unique and fantastic variety of landscapes and natural formations. The route follows beaches, woodland roads, narrow paths, field paths, passes through meadows with grazing animals and along small asphalted roads. The Coastal Route opens up a host of possibilities for a trip or holiday with plenty of quality time, healthy challenges and fairytale experiences, no matter if you are on your own or with others. It’s wonderful to walk along the water’s edge, but also good to vary the trip so you also have terra firma underfoot and come inland. It is from here you have the fantastic views – in over the island and out across the fjord.

NOTABENE When there is a southwesterly wind, especially during autumn and winter, the water from the North Sea is pressed into the Limfjord. The resulting rise in water level can prevent your passage through certain coastal stretches, particularly along the steep slopes where the sea erodes the coastline. Information about wind direction and water levels can be had from the Danish Meteorological Institute or from the tourist office. Along the many coastal stretches there are a host of good angling spots. The Limfjord population of sea trout is considerable, as a result of the many rivers that flow into the fjord. Garfish like to breed in the large areas of eelgrass. Herring is fished for from jetties and harbours. Eel can be caught practically everywhere during the summer. You come close to the farm animals and pass through unique nature areas with a rich fauna and bird life. Your dog is welcome, but must be kept on a lead. Show consideration and take care of nature! 05

Easy or tough If you are a seasoned walker, you can get round the island in six days. If you prefer short trips, you can divide up the Coastal Route to fit your requirements. There are 18 suggested Coastal Route round trips of various lengths. The coastal route crosses other routes at various points. These are marked with arrows in various colours. The actual main route ‘The Coastal Route’ is marked with the mussel on an orange background and white arrows on a green background. The round trips are shown at parking area info points and marked with green signposts where they either leave or join the actual Coastal Route. Remember, though, that it is always an advantage to be equipped with the maps. If you prefer a simple, free life in beautiful scenery, you will find 15 attractive shelters along the Coastal Route as well as tent pitches at selected natural sites. More comfortable accommodation is also available at private hosts’, campsites, inn or hotel. You can pit your strength against nature on the Coastal Route. The landscape and the fjord – rough and smooth, noisy and still, overcast and sunlit, calm as a millpond and seething with life – agitated and peaceful... in short, rough and gentle for body and soul.

Tailored trips You can use this booklet when planning your trip. Find your own balance between capacity and challenge. This will enable you to enjoy the experiences on offer en route. Be attentive and use your common sense. Information about the Coastal Route is only intended to guide you. You must assess your own safety – and remember you are always responsible, wherever you are. The route descriptions in the present folder are from Nykøbing to the northern part of the island. With a little ingenuity, it ought to be possible to follow the route in the opposite direction. Levels of difficulty Levels of difficulty are indicated for each of the round trips by the Roman numerals I-V I

Suitable for non-walkers and trips with small children (pram, pushchair, wheelchair)

Suitable for normal walkers and trips with small children over three years of age

Walking along beaches can be tiring. Categories I and II have no such stretches. The stretches on the actual Coastal Route that are suitable for prams, pushchairs and wheelchairs are indicated on the maps. NOTABENE

ALWAYS REMEMBER to have drinking water, sound shoes or hiking boots and ‘emergency rations’ (raisins, nuts, peanuts, dates, pistachio nuts, chocolate, almonds, etc.) with you.

Island – a home from home Maintained by two bridges pitching almost imperceptibly on the waters of the fjord, centre of one of the world’s largest welkins such is this folded expanse of three hundred and sixty-three unobtrusive green square kilometres covering dramatic depths filled with millions of tons of chalk and moler sand and ice-age clay mixed with prosaic gravel and covered with poetic topsoil, all of it called Mors and despite the name’s medicinal meaning alive even so, chewed through by earthworms felt over by insects flown over by birds trod by four-legged creatures with good-natured voice and by humans for humans too walk about here adding speech to voice and hands to the pursuits of day and night humans too breathe out their dreams of everyday life while time’s blue ripples glide past out there on the fjord. MAP 1 From northern Nykøbing – the purification plant at the end of Strandparken – the Coastal Route follows the fjord northwards, with a view to the east of Fur and Salling. Unless the water level is extremely low, you will either need rubber boots or to take off your shoes and socks and paddle past the slopes at Urhøj. From Årnakke you can choose an alternative route. Take part of the ‘Alsted Church’ round trip to Skarum Strand. Here the coastal slopes are as if ‘let into the fjord’ and at Dråbyvig a completely new landscape appears. Here the route crosses Feggesundvej and takes you directly into the elongated village of Sdr. Dråby before turning east and following Strandvænget to Jørsby, from where you are once more led out to the fjord along a small green path. From here you continue north towards the harbour of Ejerslev Havn. ROUND TRIPS IV

‘The Golf Course’ 3 km, approx. 3/4 hour (shore and trodden paths)

Follow the marked path (round posts) from the parking area. Follow the Coastal Route northwards along the water’s edge. Leave the Coastal Route at the sign ‘Round trip of the golf course’ and follow the golf course’s marked route until it once more takes you out to the water. Follow the Coastal Route southwards and leave the path (marked with round posts) once more to return to the parking area. IV

‘Alsted Church’ 7 km, just under 2 hours (small road, beach and paths)

Follow Kirkesvinget and Strandgaden down to Skarum Strand. Walk southwards along the water’s edge to Årnakke. Follow Årnakke inland to Alsted. Leave Strandgaden to pass through the village and follow Kirkesvinget back to the church.

SELECTED SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS THE GOLF COURSE The beautiful scenery of the island is obvious at the golf course. Every hole lies on its own, surrounded by conservation and agricultural areas. The course and clubhouse were established in 2008 and are said to be able to rival some of the best in the country. ALSTED AND THE CHURCH The village is one of the few to have preserved its village pond. The small, unassuming church, without a tower, lies opposite the village. From the graveyard there is a magnificent view out across the water towards Fur, Livø and Himmerland. SDR DRÅBY Sdr. Dråby lies on the border between arable land and salt meadow. When walking through the village you can picture yourself back in the early 20th century when, apart from the merchant’s house at its centre, the village also included a baker, miller, dyer, clockmaker, doctor’s practice, vet, parish hall, brewery, sawmill, wheelwright’s workshop, etc. The fishermen used to be down at the jetty, and goods were brought to the merchant’s house by merchant ships. The church is kept open. You are welcome to go inside and light a candle. There are tables and benches outside. 12

DRÅBYVIG AND BUKSØRODDE The area around the cove of Dråbyvig is now a game reserve and is used by a host of coastal birds as a breeding ground and resting place. It is visited in spring and autumn by, among other birds, the rare Brent goose. In the salt meadows you will find orchids and natterjacks, which breed in the many shallow lagoons. If you walk along the coast, you may see the seals that come from the protected areas of Ejerslev Røn, Blinde Røn and Livø Tap. The entire area is zoned as a game reserve, and from 1/4–15/7 there is no admission to the southern part of the spit of Buksørodde. OPERATION ‘SAVE THE BARN OWL’ The barn owl has been called the world’s most beautiful bird. From the 1960s onwards their numbers declined rapidly, and in 1990 only about 20 pairs were known to exist in the entire country. Operation ‘Save the Barn Owl’ started in 2005. At that time, only five pairs were known to exist on Mors. A number of barn owl nesting boxes were set up at suitable spots, close to the low-lying meadows and common that are protected against the use of pesticides. In 2008, the population exceeded 20 pairs, with approx. 48 young. 13

MAP 2 From Jørsby the route follows the coast northwards to Ejerslev Havn. From the harbour, follow the small roads to the highest point in the area, Hulhøj. From Hulhøj the route takes you down across the salt meadow and northwards, where it once more crosses Feggesundvej. From here you can choose a trip out past the grave of King Fegge to the inn, ferry terminal and the northernmost tip of Mors ‘Feggerøn’. The coastal route continues westwards down across the salt meadows at Feggeklit Hals and follows the water’s edge until turning up past the Moler Museum. ROUND TRIPS III

‘Ejerslev Lyng’ 5 km, approx. 1 ¼ hours (path, beach and small roads)

Walk from Ejerslev Havn out to the water and southwards. Follow Lyngen and Utkærvej back to the harbour. II

’Hulhøj’ 1.5 km, approx. 20 mins (salt meadow, paths and small roads)

Follow the Coastal Route down across the salt meadows and northwards. Leave the Coastal Route at Hulhøj and turn left back to the parking area.

SELECTED SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS

EJERSLEV HAVN Behind the harbour moler is excavated. In former times it was shipped out from the harbour. There is now a plan to deepen the harbour and create a marina, with jetties and clubhouses. At the harbour there is a mini-museum about moler. Behind the harbour lies the lagoon, from where there are short walks out into the countryside. HULHØJ From the top of Hulhøj, 41 m above sea level, there is a fantastic view of Feggeklit dune, the seal sanctuaries, Ejerslev Røn and Blinde Røn, as well as of Livø, Himmerland and Fur. Salt meadows and slopes are 16

grazed by livestock and have a rich flora, including several varieties of orchid. FEGGEKLIT Feggeklit is a moler protuberance that in the Stone Age used to lie in the fjord as an island. On its east side you can see Denmark’s longest moler profile with carpet folds. According to legend, Hamlet killed his wicked stepfather, King Fegge, here. On the west side lies King Fegge’s Grave. Farthest out, sheltered, at the foot of the dune lies Feggeklitgård, which almost seems to have grown out of the dune itself. 17

MAP 3 From the Moler Museum, the Coastal Route takes you through countryside around the ancestral farm of Skarregaard. From here, several walks are possible, but follow the Coastal Route signs (the mussel against an orange background). The route continues through the game reserve down to the wood Skranderup Skov. From here you are led once more out to the beach, where you follow the coast southwards past the cliff Skærbæk Klint. If the tide is high, you can choose part of the ‘Skærbæk Klint’ trip as an alternative route. ROUND TRIPS II

’Skranderup Skov’ 3½ km, approx. 1 hour (woodland paths and small roads)

Follow Skranderup Skovvej from the parking area down to the fjord. Turn left and follow Ropsøvej up to Skranderup Skovvej, which then takes you back to the parking area. IV

’Skærbæk Klint’ 9 km, approx. 2 hours (beach and small roads)

Follow the Coastal Route northwards along the water’s edge from the parking area at Kokkedal. Turn right up along Ropsøvej after the cliff Skærbæk Klint, turn right along Dybdalsvej and right again along Søbugten. Follow back to Kokkedal.

SELECTED SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS

THE MOLER MUSEUM At the Moler Museum you can learn about the history of moler clay. There is a large collection of 55 million-year-old fossils of fish, birds, insects and plants as well as the sea turtle ‘Luffe’, who was found by the head of the museum in 2007. It is also possible for you to hunt for fossils in the moler yourself, and to get help having finds identified. SKARREGAARD The ancestral farm of Skarregaard has been donated to Morsø Municipality and is now an agricultural museum. Enter the farmyard and experience how it was on a farm in the 1950s. The farm is run organically and the farm animals are of old Danish country breeds. There are a shop and café. The area has been designated a game reserve and Natura 2000 area. In the meadows there are many rare plants, including globe-flower and orchid, and the place is an important bird locality. The rich bird life can be observed from the bird hide. SKÆRBÆK KLINT At Skærbæk Klint cliff you have a good chance of finding fossils – including petrified wood that often has a fine red colour. 20

MAP 4 From Kokkedal the route follows the coastline, which turns westwards. If the tide is high, go up Saltbækvej and descend along Skibstedvej. If you follow the water, you continue a short way past Skibsted Strand. Here the Coastal Route takes you to the highest point on the island ‘Salgjerhøj’, from where you descend along small roads to Hanklit. From here you can for the most part follow the beach to Gullerup Strand Inn. Continue from there along small roads to Ny Klitgård, from where the route takes you via paths and field paths down to the water at Mosebjerg and westwards to the hills of Klov Bakker. ROUND TRIPS IV

’Salgjerhøj’ 4 km, approx. 1 hour (path, beach and small roads)

Follow the yellow walk route from Salgjerhøj down to the water. Walk up Skibstedvej to Flade. Turn right up Salgerhøjvej, which you follow back to the parking area. III

’Gullerup Strand’ 3 km, approx. ¾ hour (beach and small roads)

Follow the Coastal Route to Gullerup Strand Inn. Walk from inn up to Hanklitvej and follow this road back to the parking area. V

’Mosebjerg’ 8 km, approx. 2 hours (beach, path and small roads)

Follow the Coastal Route down to the fjord and continue westwards. Take the route up to Klov Bakker and then on to Sundby. Leave the Coastal Route and turn left, then passing through Sundby, leaving via Skolebakken and along Molervej back to Mosebjerg. Turn out towards the water just after Molervej No. 12.

SKIBSTED STRAND You can find shelter here from the wind and the rain in the small fishermen’s shacks. SALGJERHØJ With its 89 m, Salgjerhøj is the highest point on the island and is part of the ridge that stretches from Saltbæk to Hanklit. From Salgjerhøj you can see a number of barrows in the area – and in clear weather 22 of the island’s 34 churches.

Legend has it that ‘the old man’ comes out when the sun shines on the south side of the hill. He sits down, makes himself comfortable and peers at the sun. ‘The old man’ of Salgjerhøj is not some nasty or evil troll. He is at one with the hill, the fjord, the cliff and time that never moves and never stands still. He guards the language and lore of the people. He sees everything and remembers it all, and is more than willing to talk about it, but not everyone who climbs Salgjerhøj is able to hear him... 24

HANKLIT In 1920, a private company began to extract gravel from the 66-metrehigh cliff. This caused a considerable outcry, but there was no legal way to stop the work. So an ‘Association for the Preservation of Hanklit’ was founded, and in 1933 enough money had been collected for the association to be able to buy Hanklit, lay out a road and parking area, build a bridge over the stream and raise a flagpole on the top, where in earlier days an attendant used to hoist the flag on sunny Sundays. NY KLITGÅRD In former times, this place housed the manager of the brickworks that once lay on the flat plateau east of the farm. The lighthouse keeper dwelt in the outbuildings. KLOV BAKKER The hills, which now are a recreation area with paths and a campsite, were used for extracting moler until 1979. Find out more about the moler at the info point at Mosebjerg. 25

MAP 5 From Sundby the Coastal Route takes you out along Fælleden (the common) down to the water at Volbjerg. The route follows small paths from the purification plant until the end of Fjordkær. At low tide you can follow the coast from the sports ground in Rovvig by making use of part of the ‘Vestermarken’ round trip. From the end of Fjordkær the route takes you through the wood to the salt meadows in Dragstrup Vig and then along the water’s edge until you take the path up at Tæbring Church. Here you follow small roads and field paths past Susvind holiday camp. ROUND TRIPS V

‘Vestermarken’ (only at low tide) 9 km, approx. 2½-3 hours (beach, path and small roads)

From the sports ground you can follow the coast round the cove of Rovvig, out around Vestermarken and back to the end of Fjordkær. Follow Fjordkær back to the sports ground. II

”Hellig Kilde” 5 km, approx. 1¼ hours (paths, beach and small roads)

From the church keep to the left along Dragstrupvej. Then turn left along Kr. Koldsvej. Once past the trees, follow the red walk route over the river until you meet the Coastal Route at the dike. Follow the Coastal Route to Fjordvangen, where you turn up to Dragstrupvej, which you follow, keeping on your left back to the church.

SELECTED SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS

HELLIG KILDE DRAGSTRUP At Dragstrup Church, which is from the 13th century, there is a small stone well. Close by is the Holy Spring of Maria Magdalena. It is said that water from the Holy Spring can cure illnesses. In the river nearby there are a number of old oak posts. They possibly come from a former water mill. 28

TÆBRING The small Romanesque church that lies right out on the edge of the steeply sloping coastline can only be called Tæbring’s landmark. Tæbring is a good example of how settlement has often followed the landscape. Around the church unique traces have been found of a large Viking village. 29

MAP 6 The Coastal Route continues along the water’s edge around Torsbjerg. At Dyrehavevej it takes you along a field path through the home farm of Ørndrup Hovedgård a short distance along Ørndrupvej. After this, it turns out towards Mågerodde and then proceeds southwards along the coastal slope. The route then crosses Spand Å river and takes you via Ørndrup Enge to the end of Madsbjergvej and then in through Karby. From Karby you are taken via the salt meadows of Skyttevej, after which the route turns sharply up the stairs to Årbjerg Torn. From here it continues through enclosures and along the beach to the ferry terminal at Næssund. From the ferry terminal, follow Næssundvej for a while before crossing over to Næsørevej. From Enggården you are taken over meadows and dikes to Kringsholmen. ROUND TRIPS III

”Mågerodde” 6½ km, approx. 1½ hours (meadow, trodden paths and small roads)

Follow the Coastal Route in the opposite direction across the meadow. Use the bridge at Spang Å and continue along the windbreak and along the field path out to Ørndrupvej. Turn right in towards Karby and later follow Madsbjergvej back to Ørndrup Enge V

”Årbjerg Torn” ½ km, approx. 1½ hours (trodden path and small roads)

Walk up to Årbjerg Torn, follow the Coastal Route southwards. Turn left up along the field path where the Coastal Route turns down towards the water. Cross Næssundvej and continue along the meadow road until you meet up with the Coastal Route once more. Follow the signs across the meadow and on to Kringsholmen. Here, turn left and go out to Næssundvej, then turn left back to the parking area at Årbjerg Torn. 31

SELECTED SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS

MÅGERODDE Mågerodde is owned by the Åge V. Jensen Foundation, which seeks to preserve nature and protect wild animals. The area is part of a large Natura 2000 area. As a bird locality is it particularly valuable as a breeding ground for avocet, arctic tern, dwarf star and ruff, as well as for the migratory birds Brent goose and golden plover. Otter are also to be seen here. SKOVKIRKEN (the woodland church) The hen house at Karby Vicarage had been empty for a number of years. In 1997, a team of mini-confirmands established a ‘woodland church’ in the hen house, together with the vicar, and Astrid Grundtvig, who is a great-great-grandchild of the theologian and thinker Grundtvig, decorated the interior. The ‘church builders’ were aided by several farmers, who took care of the heavy work. There is sand on the floor, there are tea lights on the former perches and the altar is a large slab of raw granite that used to lie on the slope outside the vicarage. Wayfarers and people from the parish look it, light a tea light, sit down and enjoy the quietness and the special atmosphere of the simple, unassuming yet wonderful church interior. ÅRBJERG TORN There is a wonderful 300-degree panoramic view from the bronze-age barrow. If you stand on top of it on a quiet evening at dusk, you can see the bronze-age girl come out of the barrow and come over to your side and look out over the fjord. Like you, she sees the same landscape that people have viewed from the barrow for thousands of years. NÆSSUND The ferry terminal, which has a history going back over 1000 years, lies at the foot of the range of hills, with a fine view of Thy. Finn, the ‘ferryman’, who has sailed the ferry route for more than 40 years, says that the ferry was a rowing boat until about 1920. The ferry terminal dates from 1868. When the Vildsund bridge was completed in 1939, one of the ferries from there was put in on the Næssund route. The ferry terminal was modernised again in 1980, when the ferry ‘Legind Bjerge’ was transferred to Næssund, as the Sallingsund bridge was now completed and linked up with Salling. To this day, the ferry still connects Mors with Thy. 33

MAP 8 From Serupsvej the Coastal Route turns right along Ålekistevej, following small roads until it passes through the wood on Fjordlundsvej and takes you down to Hesterøodde. From here the Coastal Route follows the fjord to Sillerslev Havn. The route continues from the harbour along the coast, finally leaving the beach and taking you up along Skallevej to Ørding Kærvej and on up to Ørding. At high tide, can use parts of the round trips as alternative routes. From Skallevej, if the tide is normal, you can make use of part of the ‘Ørding Kær’ round trip along the water’s edge towards Ørding. ROUND TRIPS IV

‘Hesterørodde’ 13 km, approx. 3½ hours (beach and small roads)

Walk eastwards along the water’s edge to Sillerslev Havn. Follow Havnevej, Skibdalsvej, Pederslundvej and Hesterøroddevej back to the parking area. IV

‘Sillerslev Havn’ 5 km, approx. 1½ hour (beach and small roads)

Follow the Coastal Route eastwards along the beach, go up along Skallevej. Return to the harbour via Gl. Færgevej and Havnevej. IV

‘Ørding Kær’ 11 km, approx. 3 hours (beach and small roads)

Leaving Ørding church, walk down along Stranden. Follow the coast southwestwards past the pump house. Turn in along Gl. Færgevej and follow the Coastal Route back to Ørding church. 39

HESTERØRODDE From here the rowing boat ferry used to go out to Jegindø. When the flag was hoisted, it meant that there were customers for the ferry. Jegindø was an entailed estate under Lund Hovedgård (Gl. Lund with the castle mounds on Hesterøroddevej) and the ferry used to ferry the copyholders back and forth. Local people – until the rowing boat ferry was discontinued in the early 1960s – used to make use of the connection for annual summer excursions to Jegindø. SILLERSLEV HAVN Features a fishing harbour, marina, boat-building yard with slipway, cafeteria, clubhouse, fishmonger and shelter for primitive stop-overs as well as one of the island’s best bathing beaches. 40

MAP 9 From Ørding the Coastal Route takes you down Stranden to Årbæk Mill, where it continues along the water’s edge to Bakkevæld. From here, follow small roads to the village of Ljørslev and then continue through Lilleris and Legind Wood until you emerge under the Legind– Vejle bridge south of Nykøbing. ROUND TRIPS II

‘Legind Bjerge’ 8 km, approx. 2 hours (woodland paths and small roads)

From the parking area, turn right along Sallingsundvej. Then turn right along Højrisvej up past Højris Castle. Follow the Coastal Route from Lillerisvej through Kårup and Legind Bjerge. Leave the Coastal Route at the ‘Round trip of Legind Bjerge’ sign and take the woodland path back to the parking area.

HØJRIIS CASTLE Mystery surrounds the castle in the wood. In the summer you can also try to solve ‘the murder mystery at Højriis’ and visit the lovely park with Denmark’s only garden of poisonous plants, or the café and Karna Blom and Frøken Rose’s shop. LEGIND SKOV This area was formerly heathland covered with heather, but in 1892 far-sighted people from Nykøbing founded a tree-planting society. They planted trees in the area in order to create a recreational woodland area for the people of Mors. The area consists of steep hills and deep gorges, with small rivers that meander out to the fjord. There are a number of barrows in the area, the remains of kitchen middens and deep old sunken roads that all bear witness to considerable activity ever since prehistoric times. 44

LEGIND SĂ&#x2DC; The lake was originally a loop of the fjord that was drained in 1925 by local plot owners, so that they could cultivate the area. In 1991, the lake was temporarily re-created. In the meadow there grow rare plants such as grass of Parnassus, marsh lousewort and the protected May orchid. LEGIND BJERGE In Legind Bjerge, sheep carry out important nature preservation. They keep the heath landscape open and ensure that the recreation areas do not become impenetrable underwood. At the same time, they help ensure that there is a rich and varied fauna, flora, bird life and insect life. Occasionally, one can meet the shepherd and his dog at work. 45

MAP 10 The Coastal Route goes from the Legind–Vejle bridge along the fjord in to Refshammer. The route continues in past Nykøbing Mors harbour and out along Strandvejen. It then goes northwards along the water’s edge and along Fjordvej and Jasminvej. At the lighthouse, it returns to the fjord and continues northwards past the golf course.

DUEHOLM ABBEY The museum, established in 1901, took over the main building of the former abbey of Dueholm Kloster in 1909, and converted it into an exhibition venue and dwellings. The riches of the past can be enjoyed to the full at the museum’s exhibitions, which fill all three floors of the old house to bursting point. Meet the exciting history of the people of Mors at the island’s national museum – a treasure trove of experiences. You can buy attractive, unusual gifts at the museum shop. There is a café as well as a delightful garden. 48

NYKØBING MORS CHURCH The church lies at the centre of the town, raised 1_ metres above street level. It was built in 1891 in the neo-Gothic style on the site where the former Sct. Clemens Kirke once stood. This was a lateGothic longhouse church which was demolished in 1889, after it had been ascertained that, because of its dilapidated state, it was no longer suitable to be used as a church.
