46 Overhalla

Overhalla municipality is located on both sides of the Namsen salmon river. While journeying through Overhalla you may appreciate the idyllic cultural landscapes, well-kept farms, and the timber “Trønderlån” buildings along the river. On an old railway bridge over Namsen there are old NSB train carriages, converted into unique accommodation and a summer café. Here you can wake up on the bridge and revel in the view of the river as salmon jump along. The Sørsivegen road along Namsen is a particularly nice drive, with excellent backdrops for photographing moose, opportunities for fishing and other activities in the Vesterå area. There are plenty of accommodation along the river, most of which sell fishing licenses. A lot of focal foods and beer are produced in Overhalla.

HISTORIC OVERHALLA:

Overhalla is first mentioned in the saga of Harald Hairfair. The name of the municipality originates from the Norse “Æfri Halfa”. There are more than 50 burial grounds, with in excess of 800 burial mounds in Overhalla, mainly along the rivers of Namsen and Bjøra. The rivers were used for transport. The burial mounds at Bertnem almost 7 meters high and nearly 50 meters in diameter. There are also large burial grounds in Skage and Hunn. The medieval church (from 1187) in Ranemsletta is worth a visit.

HIKING SUGGESTION: Koltjønnhytta Cabin, Overhalla

Koltjønnhytta Cabin, Overhalla Koltjønnhytta is a cabin in Overhalla, popular among hikers and skiers all year around. This is an easy walk in beautiful terrain, well suited for families. Drive east on Fv17 from Namsos, then turn left towards Skage on Fv437. Turn right at Reinbjør and drive to the parking area at the end of the road. From the parking area in Reinbjør there are 3 km (one way) of cross-country ski trails in wintertime. If you prefer a longer hike up the mountain, you can ski from Koltjønnhytta towards Liasetran and Liakammen mountain. This trip is approximately 8 km, each way.
