Nærøysund has fjords, mountains and a wonderful archipelago with thousands of islands and islets. There are also several historic fishing villages, and a lot modern fishing industry in the municipality. The coastal town of Rørvik has shopping centres, a hotel, an airport, and is a daily port of call for Hurtigruten. North of Rørvik is Kolvereid, the smallest town in Norway with just over 1700 inhabitants, a hotel and a camping site. White sand beaches, fiery red sunsets, seaside mountains and excellent hunting and fishing grounds welcome you to have an active vacation.

In the area around Salsbruket you can drive along the beautiful Skrøyvdalsveien road, stop at a visitor’s farm or enjoy hunting and salmon fishing. Lush valleys, fishing lakes of all sizes and wild mountains are linked by several rivers. A visit to this magnificent area will allow you time and space to unwind and appreciate the outdoor life, undisturbed, and at your own pace.

The vast Norwegian sea surrounds the Nærøysund islands and deep-sea fishing has always been an important part of life in the area. Try fishing with a guide, rent a boat or joining a thrilling rafting tour. At the coastal museum in Rørvik children and adults of all ages can learn about local culture and the life of traditional fishermen. You can also go on a unique journey in the history of sea food by boat, with a fish farming tour and a tour of Sør-Gjæslingan fishing village. There are many renowned sea food specialities in Nærøysund and throughout the year there are several interesting festivals, e.g. the Cod Festival in March.

Discover our story through our exhibit at Norveg, a guided tour in Rørvik, Berggården trading post, our historic wharf buildings and Vågsengtunet. There is a museum shop, a café and tourist information at Norveg.

Sør-Gjæslingan - a protected fishing village

Experience wonderful Sør-Gjæslingan by staying overnight in traditional and authentic fisherman’s cabins. Day trip to Sør-Gjæslingan with MS Sunniva or express boat (Saturday/Sunday). Join a unique journey through time and seafood history with MS Sunniva!

The trip starts with a guided tour of the exhibit at Norveg, before we head out to our facility where you can learn about fish farming, up close. On the way there we guide you through the archipelago. At the edge of the fish farm you will meet some of our attendants who will tell you about their days and answer any questions. The tour then continues by boat to the protected fishing village Sør-Gjæslingan. We get a guided tour of the village and a warm lunch before returning to Norveg. Regular departures between June 21st and August 5th 2022, every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. We meet at Norveg at 10:30. Price including lunch: 750, - Nok for adults, 399, - NOK for children.

In its heyday Sør-Gjæslingan was the biggest and most important fishing village south of Lofoten. Today, the island settlement is a protected and historic gem where you can find peace and quiet in authentic surroundings. You can do as the fishermen do, and stay in charming and traditional fishermen’s cabins by the sea. Fish racks, the

23 old landing station, manor house, shop, saltery, and old cod-liver oil refinery have all been preserved for posterity. Visit Sør-Gjæslingan by express passenger boat (atb.no) or as part of the coastal museums day trips during the summer.
