Lierne/Lijre NATIONAL PARK
Lierne National Park has a diverse flora and fauna in untouched surroundings – the perfect spot for eager hunters, fishing and wild camping enthusiasts. The landscape is also a fantastic exhibition of how the Ice Age left its mark on the area. The national park is characterized by lowlying, open mountainous areas, apart from the Hestkjølen mountain range, 1,300 metres above sea level. The varied landscape is home to a number of different bird species, especially waders, ducks and divers. You may also observe dotterel, rednecked phalarope and longtailed skua there. Moreover, due to its wildernesslike character, the area is great for species requiring sizeable territories such as wolverine, lynx and bears. There are also a wide range of cultural monuments in the park, signalling the local Sámi heritage. With guides from Visitor Centre National Park Lierne you can go “Bear tracking” and learn about the life of bears. Explore the bear’s natural habitat: the beautiful forests.
The national park is a safe bet for those who enjoy foraging mushrooms and wild berries. The area is wellsuited to walking, but there are few marked trails or open cabins. How ever, the Lierne Fjellstyre mountain authority has cabins for rent both inside and outside the national park. The mountain authority also has boats for rent on some of the lakes.
