The historic “Stabbur” was a timber unit, used for food storage on the farm. Most farms had one. Today stabbur are often repurposed into cosy accommodation or dining rooms. There are several places in Namdalen where you can eat or sleep in stabbur, or in a “Trønderlån”. The Trønderlån was the residential building on the farm, with its own distinctive architecture.

Meet the farm animals

Proximity to animals and encounters with animals is a common part of countryside living. On vacation in Namdal you can take riding lessons at Jørum in Grong and learn about the animals in Namsskogan Wildlife Park. Several farms and farm shops let you meet the animals who live there. At Setran Farm you can stay on the farm, join in on the daily care and feeding of the animals and enjoy the idyllic surroundings and the fjord view!

Visit a charming farm shop

You will find farm shops in varius forms, all over Namdalen. Some sell eggs or baked goods, some sell vegetables, fish or smoked meat products, and some sell artisan food or craft products. There are several of these farm shops in Grong, among them Strikkeburet, one of Norway’s best yarn shops, and “Læmmen”, the farm shop for Traktorpikene who produce women’s clothes and overalls. Segelsund on Jøa island is worth visiting when in Namsos.

Join a course

If you want to learn more about life in the countryside a course or beginner’s session may be right up your street. In Namdalen you can join a course in traditional, creative, or practical topics you want to try or learn more about. Jørem ved Namsen have their own bakery and put on courses in baking with ancient grains, Holstad Gård teaches wool spinning and Jørum offer beginners sessions and courses in riding. Lensmannsgården in Namdalseid offer “Magical recesses” in their glass art workshop.
