Getting Here Parkes is ideally located in Central NSW along the major inland touring route the Newell Highway. From Sydney you can be out there in just 45 minutes by plane or enjoy the scenic drive or train ride through the Blue Mountains to regional NSW.

ACCESSIBILITY Parkes Region aims to provide accessible experiences and amenity for visitors including pram ramps and wheelchair access to major attractions and an array of accessible bathrooms and baby change facilities in our public amenities. The footpath network has improved to allow for shared paths and ramps for easy access throughout the main townships.

TRUNDLE Situated 55km north-west of Parkes, Trundle is a rural community, with production consisting mostly of wheat, sheep and cattle farming. If you’re looking to capture a classic photo of an Aussie country town, look no further than Trundle. Picture yourself standing on New South Wales’ widest main street, next to one of the longest wooden verandahs in Australia!

TULLAMORE Tullamore is situated on the Bogan Way, an alternate north-south route to the Newell Highway and positioned centrally to the larger towns of Parkes, Forbes, Condobolin and Narromine. Tullamore has become best known for their incredible hospitality. Keep an eye out for their program of intimate events.

BOGAN GATE

GETTING HERE

Bogan Gate is derived from the local Aboriginal word meaning “the birthplace of a notable headman of the local tribe”. Bogan Gate is a short 20 minute drive west of Parkes and is the first stop along the Bogan Way Tourist Drive. Stop in for traditional Devonshire tea at the Arts and Craft shop or have a hearty meal at the Bogan Gate pub.

A Proud History Parkes and the surrounding smaller towns combine as a progressive regional centre; from our foundations as an early gold discovery settlement, to our roots in the agricultural engine room of NSW; our anchor as an inland transport hub and our rich mining landscape.

The traditional owners of the Parkes Shire region are the Wiradjuri people who have lived in these lands for more than 40,000 years. Wiradjuri culture is alive in the community with the language being taught in our local schools and public spaces featuring traditional artworks and storytelling.

In 1862, the discovery of gold led to a hastily erected ‘canvas’ town known as “Currajong” which accommodated thousands of hopeful gold seekers.

A further discovery of gold in 1871 at the nearby Bushman’s Gold Mine helped the district to become one of the richest gold producing areas in the colony.

In 1873 the then Premier of New South Wales, Sir Henry Parkes, showed his interest in the district by visiting the diggings. On December 1, 1873 the name of the settlement was changed from Bushmans to Parkes in honour of the great statesman.

Sir Henry Parkes visited Parkes in 1887 and gave the town the Fontana Bust, which is displayed at Parkes Shire Council. In that same year Parkes changed the name of its main street to ‘Clarinda’ - Lady Parkes’ Christian name.

Parkes’ sister city relationship with Coventry in the UK was initiated in 1939 and is the oldest sister city link of any Australian town or city. The link was forged as Coventry was the birthplace of Sir Henry Parkes, in 1815.

A replica of Sir Henry Parkes’ birthplace, the Moat House Cottage can be seen when visiting the Henry Parkes Centre, alongside the Parkes Visitor Information Centre.

Also visit the landmark bronze statue of Sir Henry Parkes that stands proudly in the Parkes CBD at the intersection of Clarinda and Welcome Streets.

There is an array of iconic festivals that should be part of everyone’s bucket list delivering a plethora of entertainment across the calendar year.

Thousands of visitors flock to Parkes in the second week of January each year for the Parkes Elvis Festival celebrating the King of Rock n Roll’s birthday.

Be out there and sample some delicious bush tucker at the annual Trundle Bush Tucker Day on the first Saturday in September.

Trundle also transforms as the ABBA Capital of Australia with the annual Trundle ABBA Festival in May offering retro fun and entertainment attracting visitors from around the nation and across the globe.

PARKES ELVIS FESTIVAL Dust off your blue suede shoes and swivel your hips to Parkes in the second week of January, each year, for Parkes Elvis Festival.

Celebrate the life and music of the King of Rock’n’Roll with hundreds of events over five days, featuring world renowned Elvis tribute artists, look-a-like competitions, car shows, rock’n’roll dancing, the ever-popular Street Parade and more.

Parkes Elvis Festival has become a must-see Festival that now attracts more than 25,000 visitors from across the world.

WHY ELVIS IN PARKES? Thousands of people Australia-wide and indeed all over the world have fallen in love with Parkes Elvis Festival. From its humble beginnings with a packed out dinner show at ‘Gracelands’ (now known as Hotel Gracelands), we now have more than 200 events across five days at 30 venues, with in excess of 25,000 people flocking to Parkes for the biggest celebration of the life and music of Elvis.

The first Parkes Elvis Festival was held in January 1993 thanks to a passionate group of local Elvis enthusiasts. Bob and Anne Steel OAM, who owned Gracelands, led the group and hosted the first festival in their restaurant.

January was picked to coincide with Elvis’ birthday and, because it was traditionally a quiet time of year for the region, the Festival brought the town to life.

The Festival has grown dramatically over the years both in visitor numbers and quality of the performances and program content.

There are two Festival train services and a specialised flight that transport passengers to Parkes from Sydney and return, along with many other transport providers providing great packages to the Festival from around Australia.

The Festival continues to attract widespread media attention with more than 400 million media hits generated across the globe in 2019.

The Festival will celebrate its 29th year in 2022 with 27,000+ visitors set to enjoy the music, fun and atmosphere of the Festival which has cemented itself as a premier event on the world stage.

TRUNDLE ABBA FESTIVAL Is the ‘ABBA Gold’ album your favourite playlist? Are you a singing and dancing queen?

Do you secretly wish sequins on everything and men in flares were still in fashion? Or are you simply interested in having great fun and seeing new places?

The Trundle ABBA Festival was founded in 2012 by a local Trundle couple. After visiting the nearby Parkes Elvis Festival and thinking “how great would an ABBA Festival be?” they searched for an event to attend but couldn’t find one to go to and so thought…“Ok, let’s put one on!”

If you answered yes to any of these questions then Mamma Mia, the Trundle ABBA Festival is for you!

Now, Trundle has the only ABBA Festival in Australia and the event has experienced significant growth to over 5,000 people in 2019.

Given the town’s population is just over 500 people, the ability of this vibrant, passionate and thriving community to deliver a major event is inspiring to everyone who attends.

Held in the rural township of Trundle, Central Western NSW, the Trundle ABBA Festival is Australia’s only and original ABBA Festival. Held on the first weekend in May each year, Trundle ABBA Festival provides two days packed full of family friendly entertainment. With highlights including Bjorn Again, the World’s No. 1 ABBA Tribute Band and Fashions of the Festival there will never be a dull moment!

Science at The Dish

Parkes Township Map Reference C1, page 27 Tune into the universe with a visit to the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope, star of the movie ‘The Dish,’ (2000), it is one of Australia’s most prominent landmarks and a must-see attraction on every driving holiday through inland New South Wales.

The 64 metre wide dish stands impressively over surrounding farmlands – a sophisticated piece of scientific equipment ironically in the middle of sheep paddocks! Located 20km north of Parkes and just a short 5km detour off the Newell Highway.

Built virtually in the shadow of The Dish, the Visitor Discovery Centre is where visitors can explore the world of astronomy and discover the role The Dish plays in ‘listening to the stars’.

Visitors can help astronomers exploring the universe by turning off mobile phones and wi-fi devices or placing them in flight/airplane mode. This reduces ‘radio frequency interference’ and greatly improves the ability of the scientists to capture tiny radio signals coming from distant stars and galaxies.

The Centre features many displays hands on exhibits and a 3D theatre screening programs on space and astronomy. The Dish Shop features a range of astronomy and space science books, DVDs, science toys and souvenirs. Enjoy a coffee stop or a meal at the award winning Dish Café onsite, or make use of the free BBQ and picnic facilities.

The King’s Castle Elvis Exhibit and Parkes Motor Museum adjoin the Visitor Information Centre and one pass gains entry to both of these impressive collections.

A separate admission gains you access to the Henry Parkes Museum and Antique Machinery Collection featuring exhibits from traditional family history collections and agricultural machinery and equipment.

You can learn all about Sir Henry Parkes at the theatre experience in Moat Cottage, it tells the story of Sir Henry Parkes and his connection to Parkes.

MEMORIAL HILL Parkes Township Map Reference D3, page 27 Provides the best vantage point for magnificent views all over Parkes and the surrounding farmlands.

Memorial Hill is the most visible landmark in town, with its 33 metre high Shrine of Remembrance standing high over Parkes. The hill offers the opportunity for a leisurely bush walk around the monument surrounds, or a picnic in Rotary Park Peace precinct and adventure playground on the northern side of the hill.

BUSHMAN’S HILL Parkes Township Map Reference D2, page 27 Visit the site of one of Parkes’ first gold mines, which operated over 100 years ago. Bushman’s Hill is an enjoyable place to take a walk, with walking tracks to the top of the hill passing by some interesting historical relics. Access the hill via the Newell Highway across from Kelly Reserve, or from Wentworth Street.

KELLY RESERVE Parkes Township Map Reference C2, page 27 The perfect place to stop and relax with amenities, covered BBQ area & picnic facilities, play equipment for the kids, fully enclosed, off-leash dog park for the furchildren and idyllic view of Bushman’s Dam and wildlife. The Dam was built to service as a tailings dam for the Bushman Hill Mine located across the highway. Snap some great photos with the 3075 ‘S’ Class steam locomotive which stands as a memorial to the magnificent contribution made by the railway pioneers of Parkes.

Located in the centre of town in Cooke Park, the memorial, unveiled on April 23rd 2004, identifies the names of Parkes Shire residents who paid the supreme sacrifice in the World War I, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War.

WIRADJURI CULTURE Parkes Township Map Reference C2, page 27 Learn about the local indigenous culture of the Wiradjuri people at the newly built amphitheatre facility at the southern side of Bushman Hill (access from Wentworth Street). Marvel at the indigenous artwork created by local Wiradjuri artists, take in the ambience and spirituality of the site.

The traditional land owners of the Parkes Region are the Wiradjuri people who have lived in these lands for more than 40,000 years. The Wiradjuri tribe was the largest in the state, ranging from Albury in the south to Coonabarabran in the north covering approximately one fifth of NSW. The Wiradjuri lands were signposted with carved trees which marked burial grounds.

SIR HENRY PARKES STATUE Parkes Township Map Reference C4, page 27 Located in Parkes’ CBD, get your photo taken with the impressive Sir Henry Parkes Statue which marks an important piece of Parkes’ history. Parkes changed its name from Bushmans in 1873 in honour of Sir Henry Parkes who was the then Prime Minister of NSW.

ELVIS PRESLEY STATUE Parkes Township Map Reference C4, page 27 The perfect place to get a photo with the King himself. This lifesized statue of Elvis Presley on stage, stands as a tribute to Elvis Revival Inc and the hard working volunteers who introduced and delivered the Festival for the Parkes community. Located on the eastern side of Cooke Park, strike a pose and capture a memory with ‘The King’ and take in many of his famous quotes which are displayed around the statue.

ELVIS WALL OF FAME Parkes Township Map Reference C2, page 27 Located on the Newell Highway near Kelly Reserve, reminisce at the Elvis Wall, an interpretation of the gates of Graceland showcasing a history of Australia’s most iconic entertainers.

A new artist is honoured at the annual Parkes Elvis Festival each January.

PARKES AVIATION MUSEUM Parkes Township Map Reference F4 View historical aircraft exhibits in the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) Hangar at Parkes Regional Airport. It is currently housed in a former RAAF hangar from the airport’s time as a World War II air force base. ROTARY PEACE PRECINCT Parkes Township Map Reference D3 Wander through the Parkes Rotary Peace Precinct, a place for contemplation and reflection about world peace. Explore the five carved timber sculptures along the trail which are carved with Wiradjuri iconography to acknowledge the First Peoples and our local history.

PUBLIC ART TRAIL Parkes Township Map Reference C4 Wander the Parkes CBD and marvel at the public art installations representing the region’s local culture and icons. Explore the Parkes Shire townships which also feature public art installations.

Local artist Jac Clark was commissioned by Parkes Shire Council to provide the works in the Parkes CBD which all reflect elements of the region’s character and include an Elvis, a Priscilla, an astronaut, a literacy themed work, a mural fronting Cooke Park and a community art wall featuring interchanging artworks inspired by local artists and icons throughout the year. Installations have now been added to Peak Hill, Trundle and Tullamore.

GOOBANG NATIONAL PARK Goobang National Park, one of the state’s newest National Parks, is located 30km north-east of Parkes. It is approximately 42,600 hectares in size, 55km long and ranges in width from 200 metres to 20km, forming the largest area of remnant vegetation in the central west of New South Wales.

The Park incorporates Hervey, Curumbenya and Bumberry mountain ranges and surrounding country. Travellers on the Newell Highway between Tomingley and Parkes can see the park to the east. Goobang National Park can be accessed via a number of roads, including the Tomingley-Yeoval Road in the north, the Parkes-Manildra Road in the south and from Peak Hill along the Baldry Road.

TRAVELLER’S TIP Free camping is available within the Park at two sites, Wanda Wandong and Greenbah. Basic visitor facilities include non-flush toilets and picnic tables, (no water or power available), interpretive signage and parking bays for recreational vehicles. There is limited mobile service, visitors must bring their own firewood and remove their rubbish as no bins are provided.

Visitors are welcome to undertake passive recreation activities such as bushwalking, bird watching and camping.

If you plan on horse riding in the park, you’ll need a permit. Goobang National Park provides protection for the diverse range of plant and animal communities found in central west NSW, as well as the rich scenic, cultural and natural features of the area. More than 300 plant species have been recorded in the park, including 40 species of orchids. Brochures are available from the Visitor Information Centres in Peak Hill and Parkes.

The park’s main trails are accessible to 2 wheel drive vehicles, however they can become very boggy after heavy rain. Caloma Trig lookout offers fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.

BUMBERRY DAM Open to the public for recreational activities including camping, fishing, canoeing and bird watching. Head out the Orange Road and turn left onto Bindogundra Road, which is the dirt road opposite the 100 year old Bindogundra Church approximately 13km east of Parkes, then a further 7.5km to Bumberry Dam.

LAKE ENDEAVOUR Lake Endeavour Dam is located on the Billabong Creek approximately 25km east of Parkes and is open to the public to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Access permits are available from Parkes Shire Council for passive recreational activities such as canoeing, bushwalking, bird watching, fishing and picnicking.

Peak Hill

Peak Hill, the town with a heart of gold is waiting to be explored. There are treasures waiting to be found in the quaint and leafy main street with lots of eateries, antique stores, craft shops and local Artist’s gallery.

Located on the Newell Highway, 48km north of Parkes and 70km south of Dubbo, Peak Hill offers visitors an affordable alternative stop over to visit The Dish, Goobang National Park or the Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo. Nestled close to the Hervey Ranges, Peak Hill’s proud history is indelibly linked with the discovery of gold in 1889; with an open cut gold mine, now a tourist gold mine, located just 400 metres walking distance from the main street of Peak Hill, Caswell Street. Like many western centres, Peak Hill has endeavoured to preserve a proud and colourful history.

The Peak Hill Gold Mine provides a great example of mining techniques used historically and today.

A history museum and artefacts are located in the Peak Hill Visitor Centre. The historic Peak Hill mine operated between 1893 and 1917 producing about 60,000 ounces from 500,000 tonnes of rock.

Alkane Exploration re-excavated for gold on the site between 1996 and 2002 retrieving 145,000 ounces of gold from 4.9 million tonnes of rock. While most of the historic operations were consumed by the recent mining activity, some of the old workings have been preserved. The Peak Hill Gold Mine includes both the historic works and the more recent mines with several walking trails interpretative signage and various viewing areas along the way.

ART + CRAFT Peak Hill is rich in arts and crafts resources with all venues situated in the main street, Caswell Street.

The Open Cut Gallery and Peak Hill Country Crafts has been a popular stop over for many a traveller.

The store offers a full range of antiques, hand-made crafts, gifts and souvenirs. It also displays many historical photographs and memorabilia. This is a community-based craft shop which also operates as the town’s visitor information centre, containing an array of brochures and maps of the town’s heritage and tourist drives.

Peak Hill Art Gallery is home to many local artists, with a selection of art in various mediums, woodwork, ceramics and metalwork. Browse antiques and collectables while sampling some of the old time favourite treats from one of the many eateries and coffee shops.

Take a walk through the beautiful Commercial Gardens and appreciate the public art installation featuring artwork by local Wiradjuri Artist Scott ‘Sauce’ Towney. Wander further up Caswell Street to Memorial Park with amenities and playground.

Why not meet ‘Melvin’ the Ram one of the newest public art installations by local artist Jac Clark, located on the corner of Caswell and Mingelo Street.

FLORA AND FAUNA RESERVE - a leisurely stroll south east from the centre of town, providing opportunity to enjoy a variety of birdlife. Rosellas, Red-rumped Parrots and Zebra Finches are included among the species as are colourful orchids in the cooler months.

BOGAN WEIR - the site of Peak Hill’s original water supply, has shady picnic areas and provides pleasant opportunities for bird watching and fishing. Bogan Weir is located 7km west of Peak Hill on the Tullamore Road.

AUSTRALIA’S FIRST UPRIGHT WHEAT SILO - The first vertical wheat silo to be built in Australia in 1918 and is still in use today. After viewing the current silo it will become apparent that they have grown substantially over the years to cope with the local grain production. The Peak Hill silo can be viewed from Lindner Avenue, which runs parallel with the railway line.

Tullamore Tullamore is situated on the Bogan Way, an alternate north-south route to the Newell Highway. With a district population of 500 people, including the township and surrounding farms, there is a strong sense of community and mateship.

The area was first called Bullock Creek in 1870 and then Gobondery in 1895. George Tully, who came from Tullamore in Ireland, built a hotel and called it Tullies Exchange Hotel and pressed the point that the town be named Tullamore. He succeeded and the town has been called Tullamore ever since.

Sheep and cattle grazing and crop production is the basis of the Tullamore economy.

Wheat, barley and oats, oilseeds and winter legumes are grown annually, bringing the town alive during November for harvest. Tullamore offers an insight into rural activity during the annual show in August.

The town boasts strong Irish links with Irish born settlers moving into the area in the 1900’s. Today, up to 80% of the community retain Irish family connections. Many rural properties around Tullamore are named after Irish towns, such as Omagh, Kinvara, Cadungle, Fermoy and Carlyle.

FLORA & FAUNA Tullamore area has a substantial area of native vegetation with all the associated native animals, kangaroos, wallabies, emus, echidnas, and goannas. There are also many bird species in the area.

Bogan Gate

The name ‘Bogan Gate’ is derived from the local Aboriginal word meaning “the birthplace of a great leader in an Aboriginal Tribe”. The members of the Wiradjuri tribe were known to have a camping ground in close proximity to the Bogan River.

The ‘Gate’ part of the town name is derived from the historic positioning of the boundary gate between the gigantic Burrawang (once 208,000 hectares in size) and Gunningbland sheep and cattle stations. Bogan Gate provided access to the stock routes to the Bogan River country, which lies further to the north – it was an active bushranger territory in the mid 1800’s.

The GOLF CLUB is located 2km north of the town (Bogan Gate Map Reference D1) with a scenic 9 hole course with sand greens. Annual tournaments include a Men’s Open Tournament the second Sunday in September and a Ladies Open Tournament on the fourth Sunday in May. Social players are welcome on weekends.

The village lies on the Sydney - Broken Hill rail line, and it is the junction for the Trundle-Tottenham Branch line. The world famous ‘Indian Pacific’ train still passes through the station twice a week from Sydney to Perth and return.
