Sydney art exhibition celebrates 100 years since Machu Picchu’s rediscovery This year’s Machu Picchu Centenary celebrations have reached Australia with Sydney-siders being treated to a fascinating, free exhibition by renowned Peruvian photographer, Michael Tweddle, from the 23 November 2011 to 30 January 2012 at the Instituto Cervantes. Hosted by the Australia Peru Chamber of Commerce Inc, with the support of the Embassy of Peru, the Consulate General of Peru in Sydney and PromPeru, the exhibition titled ‘Machu Picchu – 100 years since its discovery’, will tell the story of this fascinating archaeological site. Peruvian chef opens 'fine dining' restaurant in Sydney Morena, a fine dining Peruvian restaurant is now up and running in Surry Hills, one of the most exciting suburbs in Sydney. Morena is Peruvian chef Alejandro Saravia’s first restaurant, and he is showcasing the variety of flavours, ingredients and dishes of Peruvian and Latin American haute cuisine. Gaston Acurio receives standing ovation at the Crave Sydney International Food Festival Peru’s international food ambassador, Chef Gaston Acurio, cooked up a storm at the World Chef Showcase as part of the Crave Sydney International Food Festival. Acurio’s ceviche cooking demonstration took place on the second day of the two day event held from October 1-2 and the standing ovation at the end of Acurio’s demonstration showed that Australians are becoming increasingly interested in the unique Peruvian cuisine. Mick Jagger named honorary ambassador for tourism in Peru’s Amazon Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger has been distinguished as honorary ambassador for tourism in the Madre de Dios region in the Peruvian Amazon. As an ambassador to the region Jagger is responsible for raising awareness about the area while helping protect it from outside influence. The 68 year old rock superstar visited the country for a nine day holiday with his girlfriend, former model L'Wren Scott and their son. As part of his Peruvian travels Jagger met with Peruvian president Ollanta Humala, visited Machu Picchu, explored the Peruvian Jungle and greeted fans at Cusco’s Alejandro Velasco Astete airport. Orient Express’ Hiram Bingham train has a capacity for 84 passengers to travel in luxury between Cusco and Machu Picchu.
Upcoming festivals in Peru Marinera Festival in Trujillo Discover the lesser known north of Peru by visiting the city of Trujillo and witnessing the Marinera Festival in late January. This festival and competition celebrates the most elegant northern dance, ‘The Marinera’, performed by couples. The dance involves a great deal of flirting between the couple, who each twitch a handkerchief in their right hand. The male dancer wears a poncho and hat, while the lady wears a beautiful typical regional lace dress called a ‘Moche’. During the dance competition the city comes alive with processions and music where hundreds of revelers and visitors will be sure to be toe tapping and hip swinging! Peru to host first ever World Standup Paddle and Paddleboard Championship The International Surfing Association (ISA) is to hold the first World Standup Paddle (SUP) and Paddleboard Championship on Lima’s coastline in Miraflores from 6-11 February 2012. This event, which will showcase some of the best beaches and waves on the Peruvian coastline, is bound to attract Aussies with a love of surfing. Over 100 competitors from over 20 countries are expected to attend and take part in this inaugural World Standup Paddle and Paddleboard Championship bringing Peru into the limelight of this sport. Party in Puno Get ready for one of the biggest festivals in Peru, the Fiesta de la Candelaria celebrated in Puno, the Folkloric Capital of Peru. It comes to life in a grand spectacle at the beginning of February each year with 200 bands of musicians and 200 groups of dancers parading behind the Virgin in the streets and stadium of Puno. The festival is a spectacular array of colours and sounds and links back to the pre-Hispanic farming cycles of planting and harvesting and worshipping the Pachamama (Mother Earth).
