What to eat? Stews made from chicken (locro de gallina) and guinea pig (picante de cuy) are popular. The potato is used in salty dishes, such as pachamanca (meat, potatoes, and corn cooked in a pit), and in desserts such as dulce de papa (potato sweet). Other not-to-be-missed desserts include pastries, such as prestiños (made from flour and honey) and rosquitas, as well as mazamorra de calabaza (a pumpkin porridge) and alfajores (biscuits filled with blancmange). Popular drinks include chicha de jora (fermented corn), aguajina (made from filtered and sweetened aguaje palm fruit), and chicha de molle (fermented liquor of the Peruvian pepper tree). Options in Tingo María include juane (steamed rice with chicken wrapped in a leaf) and, tacacho with cecina and patacones, sauteed cecina and frozen coffee.
What to buy? Huánuco’s craftsmen work with straw and cabuya fiber, a local cactus species. The region also has its own traditional embroidery, as well as masks, ceramics, carving work in leather, horns and Topa wood ( wood bump).

What to see? Huánuco Province Main Square and Cathedral
Main Square most notable feature is its central fountain which dates from 1845. Its sculptor, the Italian architect Julio Sere i, used a large granite stone (pacarina) that was an object of cult for the ancient inhabitants of the area. The Cathedral houses paintings from the Cuzco school and a carving by Jerónimo Scorceo of the Señor de Burgos, king and patron of Huánuco. Silver candelabras of almost two meters in height are also an a ractive feature of the Cathedral.
Daniel Alomía Robles Mausoleum
Jr. General Prado 634. Opening hours, Mon-Fri: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Huánuco's musicologist and composer (1871 - 1942). His melody "El Cóndor Pasa" was declared cultural Heritage of the Nation and is recognized worldwide. His remains are housed here.
Leoncio Prado Regional Museum
Jr. Dos de Mayo 680. Opening hours Mon-Fri: 8:00 am - 1:00 pm and 3:00 - 6:00 pm / Sat: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Ticket entry. Huánuco’s archeological, historical, artistic, and ethnographic history is conserved in this museum. It includes a replica of the Crossed Hands of Kotosh. An Archeology and Natural History Room and the Leoncio Prado Hall, hero of the Ba le of Huamachuco.
Churches
The city’s colonial architecture is best appreciated by visiting its churches (either at mass time or with prior arrangement through the parish secretaries).
San Francisco Church, Jr. Dámaso Beraún 391. Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm. It is of neoclassical style and its altars are in gold leaf, of colonial barroque and mestizo style. Cristo Rey Church Jr. Dos de Mayo 899. Opening hours, Mon-Sun 6:30 pm 08:00 pm. Has an altar coated in gold leaf. San Cristobal Church Jr. Dámaso Beraún, block 10), Opening hours, Mon-Sun 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm, was the city’s first, built in 1542. Other outstanding churches include San Sebastián Jr. Dos de Mayo block 3 and La Merced, Jr.Hermilio Valdizán, block 4.
Calicanto Bridge
300 m from Huanuco's Main Square (5 min. on foot). Built over the Huallaga River between 1879 and 1884, the bridge’s 60 meter structure consists of three arches, two bu resses, and four stone benches to the sides for resting and enjoying the view. Made of granite, the bridge joins the districts of Huánuco and Amarilis.
Churubamba Municipal History and Art Museum
Jr. Javier Lindo Zárate 110, Churubamba, 21 km to the north of the city of Huánuco (30 min. by car). Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. The museum displays a collection of mummies discovered in the Papahuasi archeological complex, as well as stone and ceramic items.
Kotosh Monumental Archeological Site
5 km to the west of the city of Huánuco (15 min. by car or mototaxi). Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. This monumental architectural area from 2000 years BC, of history consists of three temples: Nichitos, Blanco and Manos Cruzadas. The la er means “Crossed Hands” and is named for two sculptures located in the main niche that represent duality. Kotosh is the earliest evidence of public and ceremonial architecture in the Andes. It has a magnetic point that amplifies the visitor's voice in front of others equidistant to him.
Quillarumi Cave Paintings
5 km to the west of the city of Huánuco to Kotosh (15 min. by car) and 2 km from Kotosh (40 min on foot). The name of this group of red ocher zoomorphic and geometric cave paintings means "moon shaped stone". It is believed that the Kotosh started to practice astronomy here, approximately in 2000 BC.
Shismay Plantation House
17 km to the east of the city of Huánuco (45 min. by car) along the Huánuco Esperanza - Paucar - Shismay route. Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. This home was built by Austro-German se lers in 1857. It sits over a stone platform supported by 12 stone bu resses of eight meters height. The facade is distinguished by a corridor with arches that leads to a chapel housing a colonial altar. This is dedicated to the Virgen de las Mercedes and to San Sebastián, both of whom are patrons of the plantation. Declared a Historical Monument, it is also a site museum. It offers accommodation and local food with identity based on fresh products from its gardens.
Carpish Cloud Forest
40 km to the northeast of the city of Huánuco towards Tingo María (1 hr. by car). Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. Covered by a dense mist, the forest marks the passage from the mountains to the jungle and is an ideal place to observe a wide variety of wildlife and flora of high jungle. The mountain coatis, an endangered species, is notable. is notable. Also the exotic orchids and endemic birds of Peru such as the "colibrí cobrizo”, the “pardusco”, the “tangara de bufanda dorada”, the “cola espina de Plenge”, the “cucarachero peruano”, the “hemispingo de ceja parda” and the “tangara de lomo dorado". Thus, it is considered as an important center for birdwatching.

Ambo Province Jatun Uchco
24 km to the south of the city of Huánuco - Ambo (40 min. by car and 20 min. on foot). Opening hours: Mon-Sun 9:00 am - 03:00 pm A mysterious cave 2570 meters south of the main square of Ambo, Jatun Uchco (large hole in Quechua), has galleries where remains of a saber-toothed tiger were found, which is currently exhibited at the Ambo Municipality. A panoramic view of the entire city and the Huallaga river valley can be seen from the cave entrance.
Tomaykichwa
19 km to the south of the city of Huánuco (30 min. by car). This town is the birthplace of Micaela Villegas, known as La Perricholi, Viceroy Amat y Junyent's lover during the 18th century. A walk through its narrow streets reveals traditional houses with large courtyards. Its beautiful landscapes are another a raction.
Perricholi's House
19.4 km to the south of the city of Huánuco (35 min. by car). Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. Built of adobe in 1739, this was the home of the beautiful Micaela Villlegas. Original furniture from the era can still be seen, as well as some replicas. Its location on a steep slope affords it a pleasant view of the village of Tomaykichwa.
Quicacán Plantation House
16 km to the south of the city of Huánuco (25 min. by car). Opening hours: prior coordination with Dircetur Huanuco. Built by the Mercedarian Order in 1600, it has a mestizo architecture, and retains the furniture of that period. It has a patio surrounded by corridors with arches and well carved pillars, and in the front of the hacienda there is a cane field and a sugar mill where sugar cane brandy was made.
Cachigaga Plantation House
16 km to the south of the city of Huánuco (25 min. by car) along the Huánuco Las Pampas - Cachigaga route. Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 7:00 am - 4:00 pm. This sugar cane plantation is found in the village of Las Pampas. At the mill the visitor can watch liquor production, while in the mansion itself, the plantation’s products can be enjoyed. The property also includes a small zoo exhibiting the area’s animals.
Pichgacocha Lagoons
35.4 km to the southeast of the city of Huánuco (1 hr. by car and 15 min. on foot), along the Huánuco - Conchamarca - Yaurin - Pichgacocha route. There are five lagoons here lying between 3700 and 4000 meters above sea level. They are connected by streams and waterfalls. In its water mirrors boat rides and sport fishing are available.
Yarowilca Province Garu Monumental Archeological Area
75 km to the northwest of the city of Huánuco (2 hr. 30 min. by car) along the Huánuco - Choras - Garu route. Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. The accommodation, administrative, religious and defense structures here indicate that this place served as the political and administrative headquarters for the Yaros. It was one of the most well organized complexes in ancient Peru. Lacshahuarina (otherwise known as the Crown of the Inca) is a mountain that can be seen on the journey here. It is an ideal place to appreciate the mountain range.
Lauricocha Province Huayhuash Mountain Range
Route 1: 166 km southwest of the city of Huánuco (4 hr. by car and 6 hr. on foot) along Huanuco - Jesus - Baños - Queropalca - Carhuacocha lagoon – Huayhuash mountain range. Route 2: 101.7 km southwest of the city of La Union (4 hr. by car and 6 hr. on foot) along La Union - Baños - Queropalca - Carhuacocha lagoon - Huayhuash mountain range. Its highest and most challenging snow-capped peaks are Yerupajá (6634 m), Siula (6344 m), Sarapo (6127 m), and Rondoy (5879 m). A nine-day walk begins in Queropalca.
Yerupajá Peak
166 km southwest of the city of Huanuco (4 hr. by car and 6 hr. on foot) along the Huanuco - Jesus - Baños - Queropalca - Carhuacocha lagoon - Yerupajá. Available: April - October. Ticket entry. Yerupajá (6634 meters) is the second highest snowfall in Peru and is a challenge for climbers because of the steep form of its ice walls. The lower limit of the ice is approximately 4300 meters and occupies an area of 2.1 km2.
Carhuacocha Lagoon
155 km southwest of the city of Huanuco (4 hr. by car and 3 hr. on foot, by Queropalca) along the Huanuco - Jesus - Baños - Queropalca - Carhuacocha lagoon. Available: April - October. Ticket entry. Located at the foot of the Yerupajá Peak (at 4150 meters), it has beautiful scenic beauty and is one of the most beautiful lagoons of the trekking route in the Huayhuash mountain range. Sport fishing, boating and camping can be practiced in its waters and animals such as tarucas, vizcachas, foxes and skunks can be found, as well as diverse species of birds such as ducks, huachas, puffins and hawks.
Lauricocha Lagoon
120 km southwest of the city of Huánuco (4 hr. 30 min. by car) along the Huánuco - Jesús - Cauri - Lauricocha route. Opening hours: Mon-Sun: 8:00 am 5:00 pm. Located at an elevation of 4000 meters at the foot of the Raura mountain range. Totora grows on its banks and trouts predominate on its waters. Animals such as vizcachas, foxes and skunks can be found, as well as various species of birds such as ducks, huachas, cranes, puffins, partridges, bandurrias, Dominicans and hawks. In its surroundings is the Cave of Lauricocha where the remains of the oldest man of America (1000 BC) were found.
Baños Hot Springs
111 km to the southwest of the city of Huánuco (3 hr. 30 min. by car) along the Huánuco - Jesús - Baños route. Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. Formerly the Inca would bathe in two wells, each with channels for hot and cold water, giving rise to the name Baños del Inca (The Inca’s Bath).
Dos de Mayo Province The Huánuco Pampa Monumental Archeological Area
149 km to the west of the city of Huánuco (4 hr. 30 min. by car). Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. The construction of this Inca administrative center began in 1460, but was cut short in 1539 by the Spanish Conquest. The most important of its buildings are the ushno, the Inca Wasi, the Baño del Inca (the Inca’s Bath), the Palacio de las Tres Puertas (the Palace with Three Doors) and the The Unfinished Temple and the Ushno from where the Inca celebrated the Inti Raymi (unique in all of Peru). In its facilities the staging of the Fiesta del Sol takes place on July 27 every year.
Conoc Hot Springs
3 km to the north of the city of La Unión (10 min. by car or mototaxi), on the La. Unión - Pachas route. Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 6:00 am - 8:00 pm. Ticket entry. Beautiful landscapes surround these springs of healing water, excellent for fighting rheumatism. The approximate temperature is about 45 ºC.
Tauripampa Hot Springs
3 km to the south of the city of La Unión (10 min. by car or mototaxi), on the La. Unión - Huallanca. Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 6:00 am - 8:00 pm. Ticket entry. The waters here have a temperature of approximately 45 °C. A cavern of 30 meters in depth is one of its a ractions.
Huamalíes Province Tantamayo Monumental Archeological Zone
160 km to the northwest of the city of Huánuco (5 hr. by car) on the Huánuco Tingo Chico - Tantamayo route. Opening hours: Mon-Sun: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. These Pre-Inca constructions are organized according to their function: accommodation, administration, worship and defense. Some of them have five levels. The Piruro, Susupillo and Selmin Monumental Archeological Area is the most outstanding.
Leoncio Prado Province Tingo María
120 km to the northeast of the city of Huánuco (2 hr. 30 min. by car). On the banks of the Huallaga River, the province’s capital offers accommodation, food, and transport options. Close to the jungle, it boasts beautiful scenery and is a base from which to take a series of tours. The Santa Carmen waterfall is located 3.5 kilometers from the city (20 min. by car and then 2.5 km on foot). It is 18 meters high, with a natural pool of crystal-clear water. Along the same route, the visitor will find El Velo de las Ninfas (the Nymphs’ Veil) and enjoy its fresh waters. Adventure sports such as trekking and rock climbing are also possible here.
Tingo María National Park
6 km to the southwest of Tingo María (past the Las Lechuzas cave) / 17 km from Tingo María (through Tres de Mayo). Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 8:00 am - 5:30 pm. Ticket entry. The park covers the Bella Durmiente (Sleeping Beauty) chain of mountains, named for the silhoue e of peaks that resemble the profile of a woman in repose. It is home to 104 species of wild animals. The park includes the Lechuzas Cave, a large gro o of limestone that is home to the guacharo, a bird endemic to the area.
Gloriapata Waterfall
13 km (30 min. by car), then 4 km (45 min. on foot) On the right bank of the Tingo María National Park, the entrance to this beautiful natural landscape is made by Tambillo Grande suspension bridge. From there, after a 45 min. walk you reach the Gloriapata waterfall. Throughout the tour you can see rocky mountains, bu erflies, beetles, birds, as well as medicinal, forest and ornamental plants. Its crystalline waters both refresh and fill people with energy.
Las Pavas Cave
8 km to the south of Tingo María (20 min. by car). Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. This site is a ravine with lush vegetation. A rock formation a racts a ention for its similarity to the figure of a woman: the water goddess. Restaurants serving regional cuisine can also be found in the area.
Los Milagros Lagoon
25 km to the north of the city of Tingo María (30 min. by car) towards El Milagro, and then a 200 m walk (5 min). Fed by two small ravines, this lake is home to a wide variety of fish and birds. It has restaurants that serve local food and offer boat rental and excursions toward Cerro Belén and surroundings. Along the route, the visitor will find the Villa Hidalgo fish farm, which specializes in paiche breeding.
