What to buy?

Everything the visitor could wish to purchase can be found in Lima.

There are representative items from all corners of the country in the handcraft markets of Miraflores and Pueblo Libre. In shopping centers there is a wide range of products and national and international brands.

Fine and modern alpaca and vicuña garments, as well as antiques and works of art can be obtained from exclusive stores along Avenida La Paz and Kennedy Park in Miraflores. Striking designs in gold and silver jewelry are on sale throughout the city in sophisticated boutiques.

What to eat?

Peru has been named Best Culinary Destination in the World for six consecutive years (2012-2017), and Lima is known as the gastronomic capital of Latin America, because it brings together and enriches coastal, Andean, and jungle traditions. A number of its restaurants figure among the best in the world (50 Best). The creativity and the skills of its chefs play an important role in this success, but so do the variety and the freshness of the ingredients.

Signature dishes such as lomo saltado (beef stir fry) express this union, while ceviche, arroz con mariscos (rice with shellfish) and conchitas a la chalaca (scallops cooked in lemon) are dishes that pay tribute to the ocean that bathes the city. Purple corn is transformed and becomes the key ingredient for mazamorra (a sweet rice pudding) and chicha morada (a sweet beverage).

It is impossible to visit the city without trying at least one of its varied dishes, such as ají de gallina (shredded spicy chicken with walnuts, potatoes, and rice), anticuchos (beef skewers), causa (potato salad stuffed with vegetables or seafood), cau cau (tripe stew), and desserts such as the suspiro a la limeña (caramel meringue) or picarones (sweet fritter with syrup). In the capital, the elements of each dish, whether served in a simple market stall or in a sophisticated restaurant, create an endless recipe.

What to see?

Lima Historic Center The center of Lima is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site thanks to its architectural and historical wealth. The heritage sector consists of what is known as Pizarro’s Checkerboard (or Square Lima) and the district of Rímac.

The Main Square Located in the heart of Pizarro’s Checkerboad, this square is surrounded by the Cathedral, the Government Palace, and City Hall. A 17th century bronze fountain is one of its features.

Basilica Cathedral and the Archbishop’s Palace Museum Main Square Opening hours: Mon-Fri 9:00 am - 5:00 pm / Sat 10:00 am - 1:00 pm (Basilica Cathedral) / 9:00 am - 1:00 pm (the Archbishop’s Palace Museum) / Sun 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm (except the Archbishop’s Palace Museum). Ticket entry.

The Cathedral stands on the foundations of an earlier church. In addition to works of art, it holds the remains of Francisco Pizarro and houses the Museum of Religious Art. The Archbishop’s Palace Museum has a collection composed of paintings, sculptures, and liturgical ornaments dating from between the 16th and 19th centuries.

Jirón Áncash A number of beautiful buildings are located on the second block of Jirón Ancash, particularly the houses of Trece Puertas, Rastro, Mendoza, and Balcón Ecléctico.

The Church and Convent of San Francisco Jirón Ancash at the intersection with Jirón Lampa. Museum opening hours: Mon-Sun 9:00 am - 8:00 pm. Church opening hours: Mon-Sun 7:00 am - 11:00 pm and 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Ticket entry.

Built in the 17th century, the church has a baroque facade with two imposing towers. This monumental complex stands over a foundation of catacombs—an old underground cemetery. It includes the church, a museum, the Shrine of Our Lady of Solitude, and the Capilla del Milagro (Miracle Chapel): World Heritage Site listed by UNESCO. The museum cloisters are decorated with Sevillian tiles. It also has well as a beautiful Mudéjar style dome and houses a library with approximately 25 thousand volumes.

Bodega y Quadra Site Museum Jirón Áncash 213. Opening hours: Tue-Sun 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.

The house of the distinguished Bodega y Quadra family is today one of the greatest testimonies to life in the Vice royal city. Its rooms display objects from the era, as well as some from the Republican era.

House of Peruvian Literature Jirón Áncash 207. Opening hours: Tue-Sun 10:00 am – 7:00 pm.

The history of Peruvian literature is housed in the former Desamparados railway station, a beautiful building constructed in 1912. It is a meeting place for writers and readers and the site of cultural activities such as concerts, conferences, and theater.

Government Palace Main Square. Opening hours: Sat-Sun 9:00 am and 9:45 am with prior arrangement by telephone (01) 311-3908 / 311-3900, extension 4308 / 4309.

Also known as the House of Pizarro for having been the site where the conqueror settled in 1535, this building is the center of political power in the country. The current structure was built in the 1920s.

The halls named after important figures in Peruvian history. The changing of the guard can be seen at 11:45 am each day in the Courtyard of Honor.

Aliaga House Jirón de la Unión 224. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 9:30 am - 5:00 pm with prior arrangement by telephone (01) 427-7736 or email: reservas@casadealiaga.com. Ticket entry.

Built in 1535 over a pre-Hispanic construction, the house features attractive courtyards and a republican balcony on its facade.

Ownership remains in the hands of the Aliaga family.

House of Peruvian Gastronomy Jirón Conde de Superunda 170. Opening hours: Tue-Sun 9:00 am 5:00 pm. Ticket entry.

Peru pays homage to its gastronomic tradition in the old Post and Telegraph House through an exhibition of the history, influences, and evolution of its cuisine and the most emblematic dishes.

Santo Domingo Convent Church and Museum Sanctuary of Peruvian Saints Jirón Camaná 170. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 9:30 am - 6:00 pm.

Ticket entry.

The National University of San Marcos, the first in the Americas, was founded here in 1551. In the museum, the visitor can also see the tombs of Santa Rosa de Lima and San Martín de Porres, and in the church, the Altar of Peruvian saints.

Osambela House Jirón Conde de Superunda 298. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8:00 am 1:00 pm / 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm / Sat 8:00 am - 1:00 pm (courtyard only).

The construction of this house was completed in 1812. Its facade has eight balconies. The liberator José de San Martín stayed here after the proclamation of independence. It is currently the headquarters of the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega Cultural Center.

Morro de Arica Combatants Museum Jirón Cailloma 125. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 9:00 am - 4:00 pm / S 9:00 am - 2:00 pm.

The national hero Francisco Bolognesi was born in this house in 1816.

Today it exhibits his dress uniform and other personal items. There are rooms dedicated to other fighters such as Joaquín Inclán, Alfonso Ugarte, and Roque Sáenz Peña.

Opening hours: Mon-Fri 10:00 am - 5:00 pm Since its opening in 1920, important national and world stars have performed here. It was restored and reopened in 2010 after a fire in 1998. The Plazuela de las Artes and the Municipal Theater Museum, which houses the history of theater in Peru, complement its monumentality.

Church of San Agustín Jirón Ica 225. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 9:00 am - 12:00 pm / 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm / Sat 9:00 am -12:00 pm and 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm / Sun 10:00 am - 1:00 pm.

Originally built in 1573, the church’s imposing baroque facade had to be restored after the devastating earthquake of 1746.

Riva Agüero Institute Museum of Art and Popular Traditions Jirón Camaná 459. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 11:00 am - 8:00 pm.

Since 1979 this museum has been exhibiting more than 10,000 pieces of popular art, including textiles and imagery.

Casa Grau Lima Naval Museum Jirón Huancavelica 170. Opening hours: Tue-Sun 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Admiral Miguel Grau and his family lived for a time in this house at the end of the 18th century. Today it is a museum that exhibits photographs and furniture of the era, as well as letters written by the Peruvian hero to his wife.

O’Higgins House Jirón de la Unión 554. Opening hours: Tue-Sun 10:00 am - 8:00 pm.

This 19th century house was home to the Chilean politician and military hero Bernardo O’Higgins. It is currently a cultural space that hosts temporary exhibitions.

Jirón de la Unión This street is of historical importance for commerce. It is lined by beautiful buildings, for example, Courret House with its Art Nouveau facade.

Our Lady of Mercy Church and Convent Jirón de la Unión 621. Church opening hours: Mon-Sat 8:00 am - 1:00 pm / 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm/ Sun 7:00 am - 1:00 pm / 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm This religious center founded in 1535 boasts a beautiful door made of gray and pink stone. Every 24th of September the Virgin of La Merced leaves the church in procession on the shoulders of cadets of the armed forces.

Central Museum (MUCEN) Jirón Ucayali 271. Opening hours: Tue-Thu-Fri-Sat 9:00 am - 5:00 pm / Wed 9:00 am - 7:00 pm.

After passing through its imposing iron doors, the visitor finds interesting 20th century architecture. It has four rooms dedicated to archaeology, popular art, and republican and contemporary Peruvian paintings. It also exhibits the gold collection of Hugo Cohen and has a cinema and children’s theater.

Goyeneche House Jr. Ucayali 358.

The facade of this private property can be viewed from the street.

Dating from 1771, it is Rococo in style and was one of the first mansions to display French influence.

Torre Tagle Palace Jirón Ucayali 323. Opening hours: Sat-Sun 10:00 am - 5:00 pm.

The current headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, its lattice balconies boasting finely carved details make this building a fine example of 18th century Lima residential architecture.

Inca Garcilaso Cultural Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jirón Ucayali 391. Opening hours: Tue-Fri 10:00 am - 8:00 pm / Sat-Sun, Public Holidays: 10:00 am - 6:00 pm The former house of the Aspíllaga family dates back to the 19th century and today houses a cultural center with exhibition halls, a large library, and auditoriums for diverse activities.

The Church of San Pedro At the intersection of Jirón Azángaro and Jirón Ucayali. Opening hours during mass: Mon-Sat 8:00 am, 9:00 am, 12:00 pm, 6:00 pm, 7:30 pm / Sun 7:00 am, 9:00 am, 11:00 pm, 12:00 pm, 6:00 pm.

Opened in 1638, the church has an impressive collection of 17th and 18th century altarpieces, its main neoclassical altarpiece from the 19th century and colonial paintings.

Lima Public Library Avenida Abancay, block 4. Opening hours: Mon-Sat 8:00 am - 8:30 pm The National Library was located here for its first 184 years. The existing construction dates from the 1940s.

Barrio Chino Intersection of Jirón Ucayali and Jirón Andahuaylas, Barrios Altos.

The epicenter in Peru of Chinese culture is found by crossing the Monumental Gate that welcomes visitors to this emblematic neighborhood. Chifa restaurants offer an extraordinary fusion of Chinese and criolla food. Traditional Chinese products can be purchased in the numerous shopping galleries.

National Afro-Peruvian Museum Jirón Áncash 542. Opening hours: Mon-Sat 9:00 am - 1:00 pm / 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm.

Through the exhibition of shackles, musical instruments, release letters, and items of clothing, this museum recounts the story of Afrodescendant people of Peru and their culture.

Presbítero Matías Maestro Cemetery and Site Museum Jirón Áncash 1611. Opening hours: Mon-Sat 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. Night visits with prior coordination at (01) 352-6208. Ticket entry.

Opened in 1808, the cemetery is named after the Spanish architect who designed it. Its 766 monuments are examples of the finest colonial and republican art. Important figures from Peruvian history are buried here. Guided night visits are organized throughout the year.

Shrine of Santa Rosa de Lima Avenida Tacna, block 1. Church opening hours: Mon-Sun 8:00 am 12:00 pm / 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm Court yard opening hours: Mon-Sun 9:00 am - 12:50 pm / 3:00 pm - 5:50 pm The sanctuary was built during the 17th and 18th centuries around a hermitage that the patron saint of the Americas, India and the Philippines had built in 1614, the lemon tree she planted and the well where she threw the key to her girdle, the same well the faithful still approach to ask for wishes.

Amazon Ethnographic Museum Jirón Callao 574. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 9:00 am - 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry.

This museum is dedicated to diffusion of the culture and traditions of the ethnic groups that inhabit the Peruvian jungle.

San Martín de Porres House Jirón Callao 535. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 9:00 am - 1:00 pm / 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm / Sat 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Ticket entry to the museum.

In this 16th century building San Martín de Porres was born and lived until he was five years old. A chapel was built in his mother’s room and a museum is located on the second floor that exhibits relics from his life.

Church of the Nazarene and Sanctuary of the Señor de los Milagros Jirón Huancavelica at the intersection with Avenida Tacna. Church opening hours: Mon-Sat 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Museum opening hours: Tue-Sat 9:00 am - 4:00 pm / Sun 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. Ticket entry to the museum.

In this church the Señor de los Milagros (Lord of the Miracles) is venerated on the high altar. This image was painted on a wall and survived the earthquakes of 1655, 1687, and 1746. During October of each year, the image of the Purple Christ (or Christ of Pachacamilla) as it is known, is carried along the main streets of the city in one of the most multitudinous and important processions in the country.

The museum’s collection includes archaeological samples, as well as Vice royal and Republican items. These demonstrate a continuity right up to the present day of artistic processes within traditional popular art from different regions of the country.

San Martín Square The intersection of Jirón de la Unión and Avenida Nicolás de Piérola.

Inaugurated officially in 1921 on the eve of the centenary of Peruvian independence, this square is a tribute to the Argentine Liberator José de San Martín. It is lined by beautiful examples of architecture, including portals, old cinemas, the Colón Theater, and the Hotel Bolívar. There is also a variety of interesting bars.

Andrés del Castillo Minerals Museum Jirón de la Unión 1030. Opening hours: Mon-Sat 9:00 am - 6:00 pm / Sun 10:00 am - 6:00 pm. Ticket entry.

This 18th century mansion contains the largest collection of crystallized minerals in the country, as well as ceramics from the Chancay culture, and clothing from ancient Peru.

Josefina Ramos de Cox Archeological Museum Jirón Rufino Torrico 1164, Plaza Francia. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8:30 am - 1:00 pm / 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm This archeological exhibition consists of collections donated to the museum as well as items found during excavations carried out mainly in Tablada de Lurín and Pando from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Plaza Francia (La Recoleta) Jirón Rufino Torrico block 12.

This triangular-shaped plaza is bordered by the Church of the Sacred Heart and the so-called Hospice for Shamed Women. The latter has a neoclassical facade and sheltered women who had fallen into bankruptcy during civil wars and the War of the Pacific. The area was also formerly occupied by a market, and the sculpture of Liberty was a contribution of the French community.

San Marcos Mansion Avenida Nicolás de Piérola 1222, Parque Universitario. Opening hours: Mon-Sat 9:30 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry.

The mansion was built in the 17th century as part of a Jesuit convent.

It is currently the headquarters of the Cultural Center of the National University of San Marcos and includes an art museum.

University Park Avenida Nicolás de Piérola The park is a venue for political and intellectual debate between students of San Marcos University. It was inaugurated in 1921 as part of the country’s independence centenary celebrations.

With an architecture and decoration that evoke Italian masters such as Michelangelo or Donatello, the Italian community built this museum in commemoration of the centennial of Peruvian independence.

Paseo Colón Paseo Colón or Avenida 9 de Diciembre.

The Paseo Colón was built over the old colonial wall that was the southern limit of Lima. It was named for a statue of Christopher Columbus that was moved here from the Alameda de Acho. There are sculptures of the four seasons and large mansions that provide a glimpse of the city at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Palace of the Exposition, built in the 19th century, hosts an important exhibition of Peruvian art. The permanent collection today consists of almost 18,000 works that span the pre-Columbian period up to the present.

This park was inaugurated in 1872 and has monuments such as the Moorish and Byzantine Pavilion, the Seismograph, the Chinese fountain, the Botanical garden and the Japanese garden. In addition, it houses entertainment areas, such as the Kusi Kusi puppet theater and is the headquarters of the National School of Dramatic Arts (ENSAD).

Park of the Reserve Magical Water Circuit Avenida Arequipa, block 6. Opening hours: Tue-Sun: 3:00 pm - 10:30 pm / Light show Tue-Sun 7:15 pm, 8:15 pm and 9:30 pm. Ticket entry.

The Park of the Reserve was inaugurated in 1929 in tribute to the reservists that trained in the area to fight in the War of the Pacific.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, it currently contains the world’s largest fountain complex in a park. Thirteen fountains create a wonderful spectacle of water and light.

Rímac District Since 2015, this district, located across the river of the same name, which is also part of the Historic Center of Lima, is a member of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC). Although Rimac presents vestiges of pre-Hispanic life, it mansions and convents are above all a reminder of the colonial past.

Acho Plaza At the intersection of Jirón Hualgayoc and Jirón Marañón.

Opened in 1766, this bullring is the third oldest in the world and was the first in the Americas.

Paseo de Aguas Jirón Madera This great public work of the time was ordered by the Viceroy Manuel de Amat and Junyent in 1770. This project is characterized by its design of extensive gardens, French-style arches and a series of waterfalls, supplied by a channel from the Rímac River.

This 16th century franciscan convent is located at the foot of Mount San Cristóbal. It houses important paintings from the Lima, Cusco, and Quito schools.

Alameda de los Descalzos The original purpose of this mall, constructed in 1611, was to improve the access for worshipers to los Descalzos Convent. It is lined with 12 marble sculptures (representations of the zodiac) and iron gates imported from England.

Pueblo Libre District Also known as the Villa of the Liberators because of the illustrious people who once resided here, the history of this district goes back to the times of the prehispanic cultures such as the Lima and Ychsma, and the Curacazgo de Maranga. It was during the Viceroyalty that an Indian doctrine (community) originally known as “Magdalena Vieja“ was first established.

Bolívar Square Avenida General Vivanco, block 8.

This is the historic center of Pueblo Libre and where the liberators José de San Martín and Simón Bolívar stationed their troops during the Emancipation. It has a bronze pool dating back to 1742 and a monument to Bolivar donated by Venezuela.

Santa María Magdalena Church Avenida San Martín 1138 This church is the oldest rural church in Lima, founded in 1557 by Franciscan priests on land ceded by Gonzalo Taulichusco, a cacique (chieftain) of Lima. Although its facade is Neocolonial in style, it has baroque pulpits as well as colonial paintings and beautiful altars.

This museum, considered amongst the 25 best in the world, is located in an 18th century colonial mansion with beautiful gardens.

It holds ceramics, gold objects, textiles, and other expressions of pre-Columbian art. Its collection of erotic huacos is outstanding.

Its storage facility with approximately 45 thousand archaeological objects, is the only one in Peru and one of the few in the world that is open to the public.

Mateo Salado Archeological Complex Avenida Mariano Cornejo (between blocks 12 and 13) 200 meters from Plaza de la Bandera. Opening hours: Wed-Sun 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

The Ychsma or Ichma (A.D. 1100-1450) built this administrative and ceremonial center with five truncated step pyramids. Between 1450 and 1532 the Ychsma were under the rule of the Incas, who connected the center with Qhapaq Ñan (the Inca Trail).

San Miguel District Ancient inhabitants of this district included the Lima and Ychsma culture. It was occupied by Curacazgo de Maranga, who constructed the huacas that still exist today.

Legends Park (Parque de las Leyendas) is a zoo that is home to animals grouped according to their place of origin (coast, mountains, jungle, or from other countries). It has a botanical collection, a site museum, huacas, and recreational areas.

Through interactive games and active participation, this park introduces children and visitors in general to the world of science.

Santiago de Surco District This traditional and historic district saw enormous agricultural development. From the middle of the 19th century grapevines were cultivated and the first wineries appeared. Visitors today continue to enjoy its green spaces and temperate climate.

Miguel Mujica Gallo Foundation (Gold of Peru and Weapons of the World museums) Avenida Alonso de Molina 1100, Avenida Primavera, block 18.

A large variety of gold items from the pre-Inca and Inca period are displayed in the halls of this museum, where the visitor can also view huacos, textiles and ceramics, and an interesting collection of weapons from around the world.

Friendship Park Intersection of Avenida Caminos del Inca and Calle Nazarenas.

The lungs of the district, Friendship Park (Parque de la Amistad) has an area of over 30 thousand square meters. The Moorish Arch, 29 meters high, is a highlight and provides a panoramic view of the city.

Santiago de Surco Main Square Between Avenida Batalla de Ayacucho and Jirón Francisco Bolognesi At this traditional meeting place the visitor can admire the fountain, a rotunda surrounded by gardens, and the church of Santiago Apóstol, a historic construction dating from 1571. During Easter this square revives the customs of yesteryear, with a floral carpet competition.

Voices for the Climate Park Intersection of Avenida Los Castillos and Jirón General Belisario, Avenida Jorge Chávez, block 12. Opening hours: Tue-Sun 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.

Surco is home to first climate change theme park in South America. It consist of five thematic pavilions, a recycling plant, a nursery, and a bamboo house. This space seeks to raise awareness of the importance of caring for the environment.

San Borja District San Borja is a district recognized for its green areas and sustainable practices. It is also a new home for the monarch butterfly, an endangered species that can be found in the district’s parks.

The largest theater in Peru hosts national and international performances, as well as presentations by national folkloric, ballet, and symphonic music groups. It also offers guided tours and open rehearsals.

Inaugurated in 2006, the new headquarters of the National Library has rooms of manuscripts and collections of great historical and academic value. It is venue for exhibitions and conferences.

San Isidro District In addition to its exclusive residential neighborhoods, San Isidro is known for its varied cuisine and for being the city’s business center.

El Olivar Forest Between Avenida Los Incas, Calle La República, Constancio Bollar Passage and Calle Antero Aspíllaga.

Located in the heart of San Isidro, this extensive forest has olive trees, some more than 350 years old, including one that was planted by San Martin de Porres in 1620. It is home to 22 species of birds and so is one of the best places in the city for sightings.

This temple has the shape of a truncated pyramid. It was used as a cemetery by the Lima, Huari, Ychsma, and Inca cultures.

Miraflores District An important ceremonial center dominated this area in pre-Hispanic times. Spanish religious centers were later established and during the War of the Pacific it became the last bastion of the Peruvian resistance. Today Miraflores is one of the most important residential and commercial neighborhoods in the city.

Miraflores Central Park Between Avenida Larco and Avenida Diagonal.

Formed by two parks, Parque 7 de Junio and Kennedy Park, this green space is one of the emblematic sites of Miraflores. It contains the Chabuca Granda Amphitheater. Visitors can consume traditional Lima desserts and wander along a path where painters exhibit their work.

Vargas Llosa Trail On a tour along this trail the visitor can see places where Mario Vargas Llosa, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010, spent part of his life and where scenes of his most famous novels are set. The tour begins in Parque 7 de Junio (in front of the main church in Miraflores) and continues through Champagnat Passage and Avenida Pardo, reaching RaĂşl Porras Barrenechea Museum and Institute, and finally Salazar Park.

This museum conserves items from its original decoration such as furniture and photographs that belonged to Ricardo Palma, author of The Peruvian Traditions.

Larcomar Malecón de la Reserva 610 Located in Salazar Park, Larcomar is a modern shopping center with an unparalleled view of the Pacific Ocean. It has shops, restaurants, and a theater.

Miraflores Cliff Walk Lining the edge of the cliff and with beautiful views of the bay of Lima, this pathway is a perfect place to walk alone or with pets, and for leisure activities such as skateboarding, cycling, yoga classes, juggling, and roller-skating. Paragliding is also possible at a point along the way.

Along the cliff walk there are several restaurants and a shopping center (Larcomar), and open parks such as the lighthouse, María Reiche and Parque del Amor (Park of Love) stand out. The visitor will also come across sculptures by important artists such as Fernando de Szyszlo and José Tola.

Amano Pre-Columbian Textile Museum Calle Retiro 160. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry.

The museum exhibits textiles and instruments from Chavín, Paracas, Nasca, Wari, Chimú and Chancay cultures.

Huaca Pucllana Calle General Borgoño, block 8. Opening hours: Wed-Mon 9:00 am - 5:00 pm / Day visits: Wed-Sun 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Night Visits: Wed-Sun 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm Between the years A.D. 200 and 700, the Lima culture occupied this area and their adobe ceremonial and administrative center is testimony to their dominance. Pieces found during the excavations are on display in an exhibition hall. There is also a restaurant.

This space preserves a redoubt from where the people of Lima (including children and adolescents) defended the capital against the Chilean occupation in 1881 during the War of the Pacific. The park houses the Mariscal Andrés Avelino Cáceres Museum, which holds the remains of this national hero. On Saturdays products are on sale at an organic market.

Place of Memory, Tolerance, and Social Inclusion (LUM) Bajada San Martín 151, pedestrian access via the Niño Manuel Bonilla Stadium. Opening hours: Tue-Sun 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.

This venue exposes and dialogues around the acts of violence that took place in Peru between 1980 and 2000. It has permanent displays, and cultural activities such as film screenings, exhibits, concerts, performances and host talks.

Barranco District Lima’s quintessential old seaside resort and now bohemian neighborhood has a vibrant cultural scene and nightlife with traditional bars, nightclubs, and musical performances.

This is Lima’s only museum focused on modern and contemporary art. It displays temporary exhibitions of renowned Peruvian and foreign artists.

Bridge of Sighs (Puente de los Suspiros) From the Barranco Main Square via the Chabuca Granda Passage.

From Avenida San Martín via the Bajada de Baños.

Traditionally a place where people in love come to meet, this bridge was originally constructed in 1876 but was rebuilt after the War of the Pacific. It inspires musicians and poets. A path (la Bajada de Baños) beneath the bridge provides a wonderful view of the ocean and was used by fishermen to reach the water.

Ermita de Barranco According to legend, a luminous cross appeared near this ermita (shrine) and guided fishermen lost at sea.

Mario Testino Museum Avenida Pedro de Osma 409, Opening hours: Tue-Sun 10:00 am 7:00 pm. Ticket entry.

The work of the renowned Peruvian photographer, Mario Testino, is on permanent exhibition at this museum. It also houses temporary exhibitions of the work of other national and international artists.

Pedro de Osma Museum Pedro de Osma 421, Opening hours: Tue-Sun 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.

The museum is located in the house of Pedro de Osma and was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Here fourteen centuries of southern Andean art are exhibited covering the Tiahuanaco, Inca, Colonial and Republican eras.

Chorrillos District Fishermen from Surco and Huacho were the first to use this area circa 1688. This district was home to José Olaya, a martyr of the Emancipation. It also was the scene of fighting during the War of the Pacific. Old mansions with a spectacular views of the ocean still line its esplanade.

Friar’s Leap Paseo Billinghurst on the beach circuit.

Chorrillos legend includes the tragic story of a friar who threw himself into the sea after a romantic disappointment. Today, modern day friars regularly recreate this myth by plunging from the rocky outcrop whilst secured by a rope. It was also one of the last points of the resistance at the Battle of San Juan on January 13th, 1881.

Morro solar This location is a natural lookout across the ocean. It is also the site of a monument to the unknown soldier, paying homage to those who died during the War of the Pacific. In addition, there is a planetarium and the Cruz del Papa (the Pope’s Cross), a symbol built with the remains of high-voltage towers to mark of the visit of John Paul II in 1988.

Los Pantanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge 18 km to the south of the city of Lima (40 min. by car). Opening hours: Mon-Sun 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. Ticket entry.

This refuge is the city’s only protected natural area. Its fauna is highly varied and includes a large number of migratory bird species that have made the wetlands their habitat. It is a very popular place for bird watching.

The most important ceremonial center on the Peruvian coast consists of palaces, squares and temples made of mud, all constructed at different times. During the period of Inca rule these formed part of the Acllawasi and the Temple of the Sun. The archaeological center has a modern museum that explains the site’s importance in prehispanic history. From the top of Pachacamac, and when the sky is clear, the visitor can see the mythical island of Cavillaca, where legend evokes a princess and her son who were lost in the sea.

San Pedro Cathedral Jirón Huáscar 328, on the Lurín Main Square.

This baroque rural temple was built around the year 1700. The San Pedro Cathedral is the center for all the parishes in the south of Lima and it has been declared Cultural Patrimony of the Nation.

Lúcumo Hills Pachacámac district. Opening hours: Low season Mon-Sun 8:0011:00 am. High season Mon-Sun: 8:00 am - 1:45 pm. Ticket entry.

The dense mist that characterizes the Lima region between the months of June and November condenses and populates the hills and gorges with vegetation. During the hike (of between three and six hours, depending on the route) the visitor will see caverns, rock paintings, and varied flora and fauna such as vizcachas and scarlet flycatchers.

Cieneguilla 20 km to the southeast of Lima.

This district is suitable for day trips or camping. There are various country-style restaurants and a warm climate that can be enjoyed all year round.

Arturo Jiménez Borja Site Museum - Puruchuco Avenida Prolongación Javier Prado Este, block 85. Opening hours: Tue-Sun 8:30 am - 4:00 pm. Ticket entry.

More than 2200 graves and funeral bundles were discovered in this site, making it the largest Inca cemetery in the country. A museum displays some of the site’s discoveries.

Huachipa Zoo Avenida Las Torres, Ate Vitarte (9.5 km along the Central Highway).

The zoo is home to more than one thousand animals. Its attractions include an aquarium and the Bird Forest—the latter simulates a tropical environment.

This architectural complex was built by the Lima culture around A.D. 600. One of the best-preserved areas is known as The Labyrinth.

Constitutional Province of Callao Just 14 km from the center of Lima, Callao is the country’s main port and the location of Jorge Chávez International Airport. Both are vital for Peru’s tourism and trade. Its attractions include churches, mansions with balconies, and a fortress that protected the port from attack by pirates.

Originally known as the Church of San Simón and San Judas, this temple was built in 1833. Images of these two saints, are notable features of the facade. It was rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century, following the neoclassical style.

Monumental area of Callao Jirón Independencia and Jirón Constitución together with the Callao Cathedral, the Ronald building and pasaje Gálvez form the new cultural boulevard of the first port. While the architectural wealth of the zone is the main attraction, it is also a venue for cultural activities open to the public.

This 1929 construction was considered the most modern of its time.

Inside it has an English style passage, decorated with the busts of fourteen universal artists including Wagner and Michelangelo. Casa Cor, the country’s principle design and architecture exhibition, is located between the Ronald Building and Casa Valega (Jirón Independencia).

One of the largest fortresses on the continent, Real Felipe was built in 1747 to defend the capital of the viceroyalty from attacks by pirates. On May 2nd, 1866, it was the site of a fierce battle in the war with Spain. It can be toured as part of a visit to the Peruvian Army Museum, which displays uniforms and weapons.

The museum recounts the country’s maritime history through the exhibition of photographs, jewelry, weapons, oil paintings, and navigation instruments. It also has a collection of archaeological discoveries from the Nasca, Moche, Chimú, and Lima cultures.

Naval Submarine Abtao Site Museum Avenida Jorge Chávez 120 A. Opening hours: Tue-Sun 9:30 am - 4:30 pm. Tel. (01) 453-0927. Ticket entry.

A tour includes the torpedo, the control room, the bow and stern batteries, and the machine and engine room. The visitor can learn about the routine of the naval officers who served on the vessel, often remaining under the sea for up to 40 days.

Chucuito Chucuito is a traditional and colorful fishermen’s neighborhood.

Some of the houses are Gothic or Neo-Renaissance in style and were built between 1900 and 1920 by Italian immigrants who sought to replicate European architecture popular at the time.

Dársena Pier The contract to build this emblematic pier was awarded to the English company Templeman Bergman. Construction began in 1870 and was completed in April 1875. It was later managed by Societé Generale de Paris. It was center for port activity during the 19th century and for a good part of the 20th. The lighthouse that guided the merchants on the high seas still stands proudly today.

La Punta This resort occupies the end of the peninsula of Callao. Republicanstyle mansions still remain. Marine cuisine can be enjoyed in the restaurants that line the boardwalk beside its pebbly beach and cold waters.

Islas Sea lions, guano birds, a mysterious center of moon worship and an old prison are all part of the experience of visiting the Palomino islet and the islands of Cavinzas, San Lorenzo, and El Frontón. The nature and history of Callao can be enjoyed on four-hour cruises that depart from the quays of Callao and La Punta between 10 am and 2 pm.
