The Cristo Blanco Lookout Cerro El Siglo, Moquegua district. The Cristo Blanco (White Christ) that crowns this natural lookout is the city’s guardian. Photographs of Moquegua’s impressive panorama and surroundings can be taken from the top of the hill.
The Chen Chen Geoglyphs 1.5 km to the southwest of the city of Moquegua (15 min. by car). This site is one of the most important settlements of the Tiwanaku culture on the southern coast of Peru. The geoglyphs are primarily zoomorphic representations of camelids, drawn on the soil of a chain of hills. The silhoue es are best appreciated very early in the day or at dusk.
Samegua District 3 km to the northeast of the city of Moquegua (5 min. by car). This district is known as the “Avocado City”, because of this fruit high quality.
Torata District 20 km to the northeast of the city of Moquegua (25 min. by car/40 min by bus). This is a traditional village of houses with mojinete roofs, set in beautiful countryside. It is notable for its archeological richness. The Inca administrative center of Sabaya is located in the surroundings, as well as the archeological sites of Torata, Camata and Cerro Baúl. The Torata stone mills are a reminder of its colonial past.
Cerro Baúl Archeological Site 18 km to the northeast of the city of Moquegua (20 min. by car). Opening hours: Mon - Fri 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. This walled city built by the Wari (A.D. 600 - 1100) is located at the top of a mountain with the shape of a trunk. It attracts those interested in rituals and offerings to the earth and the apus (mountain spirits). Every year in Holy Week, thousands of people make the journey to its peak.
The Mollesaja Waterfalls 20 km to the northeast of the city of Moquegua, in the Mollesaja Grande sector, the town Yacango in the Torata district (35 min, by car and 10 min. on foot). After walking through mountainsides, the visitor arrives at this waterfall of more than 100 meters in height, fed by the Pasto Grande Lagoon.
Cuajone Mine 32 km to the northeast of the city of Moquegua (20-30 min. by car). From a lookout, the visitor can see how copper is extracted from this modern open-cut mine. Permissions for access must be managed beforehand.
The Tixani Valley 192 km to the north of the city of Moquegua (3-4 hr. by car). The villages of the districts of Carumas, Cuchumbaya and San Cristóbal are located in this Interandean valley, home to potato and oregano cultivation with a growing livestock. In addition to its beautiful landscapes, it has geysers and hot springs. Its main attractions are mountaineering and its traditions of Aymara origin, such as the dance of Sarawja, La Palomita and Los Pules, declared as National Cultural Heritage. The Putina Hot Springs 141 km to the north of the city of Moquegua, Calacoa village (4 hr. by car). The water at these hot springs is expelled to a height of 5 meters, creating a truly natural spectacle. Pools of varying sizes have formed in its surroundings. Av . Circunvalación Pr . Amazonas Cl.
