What to eat? Seafood dishes such as cebiche, is very popular in the coastal zone of the region. Other emblematic Piuran dishes are seco de chabelo (a dry beef stew with kneaded banana), seco de cabrito (a goat stew tenderized in corn beer and vinegar, served with beans), majado de yuca con chicharrón (cooked and mashed cassava with chili pepper) and chifles (fried plantain slices). Piura’s dessert par excellence is natilla, made from goat's milk, chancaca (a caramel-flavored sugar product) and rice flour.
What to buy? Piura is home to skilled craftsmen. Fine filigree objects and jewels in gold and silver can be found in Catacaos, as well as fabrics of knitted straw and carvings in timber and wood from the sapota tree. Chulucanas is famous for its ceramics, while Talara, Sechura and Paita are known for their work with marine objects such as seashells. In Huancabamba, Ayabaca and Montero, craftsmen weave blankets and ponchos using the traditional backstrap loom technique.

What to see? Piura Province Main Square The Main Square is found in the heart of the city, surrounded by tamarind trees planted in 1870. A marble statue representing liberty shines in the center, a gift from President José Balta in 1870 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Peruvian independence.
San Miguel Arcángel Basilica Cathedral Jr. Huancavelica 362. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 6:30 am - 12:30 pm / 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm The temple was founded in 1588 and dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and Saint Michael the Archangel. It houses an important altarpiece of the 18th century, dedicated to the Virgin of Fatima, crafted in Nicaraguan cedar and gold leaf. After the 1912 earthquake, the main altar was rebuilt by the Spanish sculptor Julián Alagua.
Churches • Church of San Sebastián Intersection of Calle Tacna and Calle Moquegua. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 7:00 am - 11:30 am / 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm. The church was built on top of the San Sebastián de los Indios Chapel during the colonial period and was a center for evangelism of the indigenous population. • Church of San Francisco Malecón Eguiguren 516, intersection with Calle Lima. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8:00 am - 11:00 am and 4:00 pm - 7:30 pm / Sat 7:00 am - 10:00 am and 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm / Sun 9:00 am - 11:00 am and 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm. Built in the 18th century, the independence of Piura was proclaimed in the vestibule of this church on January 4, 1821. • Church of El Carmen Jr. La Libertad 366, opposite the Plazuela Ignacio Merino. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm This church is regarded as the most baroque in Piura and houses important works of vice-royal art, including paintings from the Quito School.
Museums and Galleries • Central Reserve Bank Museum - MUCEN Piura Jr. Huancavelica 346. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Tel. (073) 329-070. Ext.77272. It has three rooms which exhibit pieces of Vicús archaeology and goldsmiths, a numismatic collection and an art room with paintings by Piura artists like Ignacio Merino, Felipe Cossio del Pomar and José Aldana. • Gran Almirante Miguel Grau Museum and House Jr. Tacna 662. Opening hours: Tue-Fri 9:00 am - 1:00 pm / 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm / Sat-Sun 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Tel. (073) 326-541. This is the mansion where Miguel Grau was born and lived. It preserves furniture of the era and exhibits family photographs and documents of the “Gentleman of the Seas”. • Vicús Municipal Museum and Gold Room Intersection of Avenida Sullana and Jirón Huánuco. Municipal Museum opening hours: Tue-Sat 9:00 am - 5:00 pm / Sun 9:00 am - 13:00 pm. Gold Room opening hours: Tue-Sat 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. Tel. (073) 302-803. Ticket entry (Gold Room). The Municipal Museum has eight rooms with free entry and the Gold Room, which exhibits a collection of 62 goldsmiths pieces which date back to the Vicús culture.
Catacaos 12 km to the southwest of the city of Piura (15 min. by car). This village is known for its artisans' skills when crafting with clay, weaving with toquilla straw and cotton and when making delicate gold and silver filigrees. As it is also known for its flavors, it is a good place to try regional cuisine.
Narihualá Fortress Cl. Olmos s/n, Narihualá (3 km from Catacaos, 5 min. by car). Opening hours: Tue-Sun 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. Tel. (073) 322-307. Ticket entry. This archaeological center occupies six hectares. It is composed of adobe and mortar and today is regarded as the capital of the Pre-Inca Tallán culture.
Paita Province Paita Bay 60 km to the west of the city of Piura (1 hr. by car). This bay’s lovely seascape is worthy of its designation as “Paita’s window”.
Manuela Sáenz House Jr. Nuevo del Pozo 390, Paita. Today only the facade can be visited of what was once the home of Manuela Sáenz, partner of Simón Bolívar and a pioneer of feminism in Latin America. A plaque reads “Here lived the emancipator of the Liberator Simón Bolívar”.
Foca Island 30 min by boat from La Islilla cove This island is located in front of La Islilla cove. Its location favors the presence of a great biodiversity of species because of the convergence zone of the Humboldt and the equatorial current. Here you can see species such as humpback whales, Humboldt penguins, green turtles and sea lions.

Beaches circuit • Yacila 17 km to the south of the city of Paita (25 min. by car). This beach with tranquil waters is ideal for swimming. • Cangrejos 2 km to the south of Yacila (10 min. on foot). Lovers of nautical sports come to this small beach to swim, dive and fish. • Colán 65 km to the west of the city of Piura (55 min. by car) / 15 km from the city of Paita (10 min. by car). By the side of its gentle and warm sea, this traditional resort town contains wooden mansions built on stilts. • La Islilla Cove 22 km to the south of the city of Paita (30 min. by car). This fisherman’s cove includes the beaches of La Laguna, Hermosa and Las Gramitas. Opposite the cove and 30 minutes away by boat, is Foca Island, where sea lions, penguins and seabirds can be seen. • Las Gramitas 10 min to the north of La Islilla (on foot). Sea lions and Humboldt penguins rest on this beach of sand and stones.
Church of San Lucas de Colán 1 km from the spa La Esmeralda de Colán (10 min on foot). It is considered one of the first churches built in the South Pacific during the 16th century. Made of limestone, it has a wooden tower. Inside, the main altar made of gold leaf stands out, where you can see the royal shield of the Habsburg family. It also has colonial images of the 16th century.
Elba Aranda de Sarango Museum Carretera Sullana-Paita, 30 km to the northwest of Piura. Opening hours: Tue-Sat 9:00 am - 5:00 pm / Sun 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm Ticket entry. The region’s only paleontology museum displays marine and land fossils preserved since the Pleistocene. The history of La Huaca is also told through old objects and photographs.
Sullana Province Sullana Church Facing the Main Square. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 6:30 am - 9:00 am / 6:00-8:00 pm. This neoclassic church is crowned by a tower on each side.
San Miguel de Tangarará Village 15 km to the north of the city of Sullana in the Marcavelica district (25 min. by car). With the name of San Miguel, in 1532 this was the first Spanish city founded in the South Pacific. Commemorating the event, an obelisk was built in the center of its main square in 1932 and still impresses today.
Chira Valley 39 km to the north of the city of Piura (45 min. by car). Rice fields, lemon plantations and Marcavelica palms thrive in the fertile soil of this valley. In its center lies the city of Sullana, also known as the Pearl of Chira.

El Angolo Hunting Reserve 115 km to the north of the city of Sullana (3 hr. in a 4x4 vehicle). The reserve’s elevation ranges from 540 meters in the village of El Angolo to 1613 meters at the top of the mountain Cero Carrizal. The summits of the Amotapes mountain range can be discerned, a zone of dry forests and gorges. It is the habitat of 17 species of mammals (the white-tailed deer, the puma, wild cats, the anteater, among others), 15 bird species (the condor, the kestrel and the king vulture), 13 reptile species, seven amphibian species and ten types of fish. The plentiful flora includes faiques, Peruvian carobs, almonds and the ceibo. Hunting in the reserve is regulated.
Amotape Hills National Park 90 km to the north of the city of Sullana (3 hr. by car), as far as the village of El Papayo, the entry point to the park. This equatorial dry forest occupies territory in the regions of Piura and Tumbes. It has great biodiversity since its elevation ranges from 200 to 1613 meters. It is inhabited by species native to arid zones, to the Andean mountain range and to tropical forests, such as the red deer, the Andean condor and the red headed parrot. Its most emblematic trees are the Peruvian carob, the hualtaco and the sapota.
Talara Province Punta Balcones 1 km to the south of the village of Negritos, after the San Pablo fisherman's cove. This beach has the shape of the moon’s crescent and good waves for surfing. Its rocks are the habitat of the sea lion.
Lobitos 18 km to the north of the city of Talara (30 min. by car). Because of its waves and strong winds, this beach is a favorite of surfers, as well as wind and kite surfers.
Cabo Blanco 3 km to the north of the El Alto district (5 min. by car) / 153 km to the north of the city of Piura (2 hr. 15. by car). With waters rich in fish, this village is very popular with deep sea fishermen, scuba divers and surfers. The marlin and golden swordfish are its most plentiful species.
El Ñuro 17 km to the southwest of Máncora (30 min. by car). This fisherman's cove has become a magnet for people wanting to swim with the sea turtles which can be seen close to the fishing pier.
Los Órganos 175 km to the northwest of the city of Piura, on the Panamericana Norte Highway, 1153 km from Lima (2 hr. 15 min. by car). This beach at the foot of the Peña Mala mountain is wide, long and has an artisanal fishing pier. It is possible to visit an aquarium and a marine museum during the tour.
Vichayito 177 km to the northwest of the city of Piura, Panamericana Norte Highway, 1155 km from Lima (2 hr. 30 min. by car). Kitesurfers and windsurfers come to practice their sport on this open beach with fine sand. It has a peaceful atmosphere and tourist facilities.
Punta Veleros 600 m southwest of Los Órganos (10 min on foot). This beach has a good climate throughout the year, with fine white sand and gentle waves.
Máncora 187 km to the northwest of the city of Piura, on the Panamericana Norte Highway, 1165 km from Lima (2 hr. 30 min. by car). Máncora is one of the most popular resorts on the coast because of its year-round sun. Its waves make it a surfer’s paradise. It has a quite varied range of hotels and cuisine.
The Pillars of Fernández Gorge 45 km to the southeast of Máncora (1 hr. by car to the village of Fernández and then 1 hr. 15 min. on foot to Los Pilares). Camping enthusiasts come to this equatorial dry forest, which has three natural pools and small waterfalls.
Morropón Province La Encantada 5 km to the south of Chulucanas (15 min. by car). This traditional village is a legacy of the Vicúsz culture. Its ceramic craftsmen still use the techniques of their forebears to represent their customs.
Chulucanas 60 km to the east of the city of Piura (45 min. by car). Chulucanas is renowned for the ceramic work which its craftsman use to portray their customs. They use good-quality clay, which they paint with green, yellow and black ochre and natural dyes, just as the Pre-Hispanic cultures did. For example, the black shade is obtained by burning the mango leaf.
The Caracucho Waterfall 12 km north of Morropón (15 min by car to the Caracucho peasant community, then a 1 hr 30 min hike). With a height of 14 meters approx. this waterfall has 3 falls; its waters are crystal clear and of a pleasant temperature so that the visitor can bathe at any time of the year.
Ayabaca Province The Sanctuary of Señor Cautivo de Ayabaca In the center of the locality of Ayabaca. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 6:00 am - 12:00 pm / 2:00 pm - 9:00 pm. This 17th century temple, where the image of Señor Cautivo de Ayabaca is venerated, is one of northern Peru’s most fervent places. Its facade contains 13 arches, which represent Jesus and the Twelve Apostles. Inside, it is adorned with gold-leaf altar pieces and paintings from the Quito School.
Yantuma Mountain 2 km to the north of the locality of Ayabaca (5 min. by car). From the 2836 meter summit of this mountain, there is a breathtaking view of the countryside, bettered only during the thermal inversion phenomenon, which forms a blanket of clouds covering all but the highest peaks.
Cuyas Forest 5 km to the north of the locality of Ayabaca in the campesino community of Cuyas-Cuchayo (10 min. by car). This cloud forest reaches 2900 meters in elevation. There are more than 100 species of birds among its varied fauna (the bearded guan, the stygian owl, the sword-billed hummingbird, to name a few). A hike through its landscapes laden with clouds leads to beautiful waterfalls. The best time to visit is between May and December.
Aypate Archaeological Complex 45 km to the south of the locality of Ayabaca (2 hr. 30 min. by car). This Inca administrative center was built in the 15th century. Still standing are the Inca’s sleeping chamber, the central plaza, the acllahuasi and the platforms. Some 100 meters east is the Moon Pyramid, which served as a ceremonial center. The complex is surrounded by a cloud forest where orchids and bromeliads grow.
Huancabamba Province Canchaque 142 km to the southeast of the city of Piura (2 hr. 30 min. by car). Canchaque is a village in the mountains of Piura, which reach 1300 meters. Its countryside is the perfect stage for excursions and hiking. Coffee and beautiful fabrics are among its most popular products.
Citán Waterfall 5 km to the south of the village of Sóndor (30 min. by car). This 25 meter cascade is located in the Curlata Gorge. The best time to visit is between March and November when the water flow is at its minimum.
Los Peroles de Cascapampa Touristic Complex District of Sondorillo. 1 h 20 min northwest of Huancabamba. A place where you can visit a trout farm, a mini zoo and a natural lagoon where you can take a boat ride. Nearby, you will also find rock formations naturally carved by water.
Los Jaguares Temple 19 km to the north of Huancabamba in the district of Sondorillo (1 hr. by car). This religious center was built in the 12th century and features a stone sculpture portraying a pair of jaguars. The pair is surrounded by altars where offerings were made during rituals. When the Incas conquered the area in the 15th century, they imposed the Sun Cult and covered the temple with red clay.
Las Huaringas Lagoons 27 km to the north, from Huancabamba toward the village of Salalá (2 hr. 30 min. by car), then 15 km to Laguna Negra (2 hr. 30 min. on foot, mule, or horseback). It is a lagoon complex, whose cold waters are well-known for their curative properties. The main lagoon, which gives its name to the complex, is La Negra or Huaringa (The Inca’s Lagoon) and is the favorite among healers. The Shimbe Lagoon is the largest and the only one in which fishing is possible. In the surrondings the ichu (Peruvian feathergrass), the chilhua and totorales (bullrushes) all grow.
Sechura Province San Pedro Mangroves 45 km / 28 miles south from Piura (50 min by car) It covers some 1,500 hectares of which 400 are full of mangroves. The terrain is flat in the mangrove forest, but the rest undulates because of the sand dunes. The most abundant plant life is the black mangrove, and as representatives of the animals, there are seventeen different bird families.
San Pedro Beach 47 km / 29 miles south from Piura (1 h by car). Its waters are known for being calm and transparent with a warm temperature. It hosts an exuberant biodiversity of birds due to its proximity to the San Pedro Mangroves.
The Church of San Martín de Tours In the center of the city of Sechura, Cl. Constitución, block 6. Opening hours: Mon-Sat 8:00 am - 11:45 pm / 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm / Sun 8:00 am - 12:00 am. Tel. (073) 377-480. This colonial church was built in the 18th century in the late Baroque style. Its towers of up to 44 meters in height are a feature, as are the pulpit carved in wood, the main altar handmade from tree trunks and the balconies, which were used by the locality’s distinguished families to attend mass discreetly.
Médano Blanco 10 km from Sechura (20 minutes by car). Big dune of 300 m long by 20 m high, located in Sechura desert. Here you can practice sandboarding and take a buggie ride.
Ñapique Lagoon 15 km to the east of the city of Sechura (20 min. by car). This lagoon is shallow and has tranquil waters. It is of particular interest for those who love birdwatching, as it hosts a wide variety of birds, especially migratory species in summer.
Virrilá Estuary 20 km to the south of the city of Sechura (26 min. by car). Boat trips, sport fishing and hiking are just some of the activities that can be enjoyed at this salt water mirror. Flamencos and other migratory birds arrive here in search of warmth and food.
Chulliyachi Beach 7 km from Sechura (10 min by car). Its waters are known for being warm and transparent and a diversity of birds, such as gulls and pelicans can be observed.
Punta Nunura Beach 75 km to the southwest of the city of Sechura (55 min. by 4x4 vehicle and 30 min. by boat). A visit to this beach is ideal for viewing dolphins and marine turtles swimming in crystal-clear waters. The presence of seabirds tells fishermen that this is an area rich in fish. Its waves are also good for surfing.
Illescas Archaeological Complex 50 km to the south from the city of Piura towards the city of Sechura (55 min. by car) and then 64 km to the complex (55 min. by car). This was a burial center for the Illescas civilization and is composed of niches and caves, as well as some stone structures.
Sechura Desert 55 km to the southwest of the city of Piura (1 hr. by car). At 5000 sq. km, this desert is the largest in the country. Along the coast there are huge deposits of oil.
Illescas Reserved Area 130 km to the southwest of the city of Piura (2 hr. 30 min. by car). The beautiful landscapes here are home to a wide variety of marine and land species. It is an ideal place for hiking, enjoying nature and adventure sports.
