The Douro Demarcated Region was the first wine-growing region in the world to be demarcated and regulated in 1756. In 2001, the Winegrowing Alto Douro was declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site as a living and evolving cultural landscape.
The Vinhos Verdes demarcated region is the largest Portuguese region in geographical area and one of the largest in Europe. It is located in the area Entre-Douro-e-Minho, dividing into subregions that vary in the types of soils, microclimates and grape varieties for the production of wines, sparkling wines and brandies (aguardentes).
