Lojas com História Guide Porto City Hall has been deeply committed in increasing and promoting local and traditional trade. To this end, it has devised a set of policies aimed at the sustainable revitalisation of economic activities that, due to their important role in the cultural plan, enhancement of the historical heritage and traditional experiences of the city, deserved recognition by the Municipality of Porto. In this context, the strategy defined by the Municipality also involves the protection and safeguarding entities of historical interest, for profit or non-profit, which, by their activity and tangible or intangible heritage, constitute an outstanding cultural or social reference for the city. The historical shops and the entities of historical interest in the city of Porto are recognised in the different sectors of commercial activity and / or of cultural or social nature and were, throughout the life of the city, striking by factors that constitute the criteria for their recognition. The “Porto de Tradição – Roteiro Lojas com História” brochures suggest itineraries that enable to get to know the city and these special places through a different perspective.

Casa Alvão
Majestic Café
Benedito Barros, Lda.
Restaurante Escondidinho
Marcolino Relojoeiro
Ourivesaria Brilhante
Founded on 2 January 1902 by photographer Domingos Alvão, features a rare collection that delights visitors: thousands of photographs by this renowned photographer, a key figure of the city of Porto, depicting decades of history of the city and its people.
This iconic café is considered one of the most beautiful examples of Art Nouveau in Porto, with an atmosphere of refinement and well-being. Its beauty and heavy symbolism earned it to be a listed building in 1983 and the city’s “cultural heritage”. It has been getting numerous national and international awards and beckons to relive the fascinating Belle Époque.
Shop founded in 1926, it moved in 1958 to its current location, on the first floor of an imposing building, without shop windows to Rua de Passos Manuel. Being a tough specialist in selling wool products, this activity gives it some exclusivity.
Opened on 12 December 1931, this upscale restaurant maintains a warm and family atmosphere. The dining room reproduces, in its design, the cosy comfort of the 18th-century residences. Through here passed leading figures of Porto and Portuguese society.
This watchmaker’s is one of the most iconic of Porto. It opened its doors in 1926 in the heart of the city. Although it has had several different owners and refurbishments and over its 90 years of history, this shop continues to preserve its founder’s name. The imposing Art Nouveau façade building showcases collections of luxury watch brands and unique pieces of international jewellery in a sophisticated setting sought-after by collectors.
Founded in 1912, the façade of this jewellery shop was restored about 25 years ago to look as it was in the 1940s. This establishment is currently recognized as one of the official appraisers licensed by the Imprensa Nacional da Casa da Moeda and specialises in selling gold, silver and antique jewellery.

The management of this shop founded in 1928 is already in its third generation. It is a local business with a sewing machine repair and fine-tuning workshop. It has become a distributor of major brands of sewing and embroidery machines. In 2016, it was remodelled, keeping most of the identity of its original plan.
This fine grocer’s shop founded in 1947 is renowned for the refinement and quality of its products. It tried to keep the tradition, for example with selling ground coffee in the shop and by holding workshops. With over 70 years of history, this institution of the elegant and traditional trade in Porto is proud to have loyal customers spanning several generations.
Porto’s first frame workshop was founded in 1858, always maintaining its family identity and tradition. The art of using gold or silver leaf is a craft preserved by this house, along with the technique of frame making and the restoration of paintings. It is currently the oldest frame shop in the world.

According to the evidence, this commercial establishment has been running since 1950, but its opening dates to 1948. This restaurant frequented by a lettered clientele has gained public recognition for their renowned Tripas à Moda do Porto - dish that has won several awards and has become renowned of this eating house.

“Cunha” is a renowned patisserie of Porto, inaugurated on 31 March 1906. Occupying the current building since the 70’s, this establishment has become a gastronomic architectural and social reference. It was a meeting place for journalists and artists and for business meetings and remains a space favourable for socialising.
In this tailoring shop founded in 1918, the know-how passed down over several generations, preserving the rigor of personalised service and customisation as its identity aspects. All pieces are made in its facilities, with the meticulousness which this historic house has been known for.
Founded in 1902 as a gold/silversmith’s workshop, it moved in 1966 to Rua Santos Pousada - current location. Over the years, it has been holding several exhibitions always with the concern to preserve the art and history of gold/silversmiths, in a constant adaptation to modernity.

Galerias da Vandoma

Escovaria de Belomonte
Inaugurated in 1859, this jewellery shop is a landmark in the city for its history and age. It has been able to preserve a service of excellence recognized to this day. The silverware and the filigree pieces are the flagship products of this century-old house. It also has a complete range of gold/silversmithing, jewellery, watchmaking products and transforming jewellery.
It is a jewellery shop with more than a century and a half of history. This traditional and family business has its main identity feature in the representative pieces of Portuguese jewellery and in the filigree pieces, which it has been selling for decades. This house’s age proves that it is a historical and cultural reference of the city.
Now in its third generation of the founding family, these galleries have a unique family tradition linked to the passion for antiques. It was in 1975 that the founder specialised in exclusivity in auctioneer and antiquarian activities. The loan of works of art to museums, exhibitions and publications shows the influence and connection with various cultural institutions in the city.
Open since 1968, it is the oldest and most traditional Fado house in Porto. A landmark where fado and good conversations take place and where one can combine the flavours and sounds typical of the Portuguese soul. The preservation of Portuguese customs is a concern of this house of great sociocultural relevance.
Originating in 1927, it is a sort of shop / factory / museum where everything is done in an artisanal way. In the small factory that runs inside the shop, everything is made and done by hand. This family business has established itself over the years and has preserved an increasingly rare genuine craft: the craft of making brushes/brooms.

Armazéns Cunhas
Lopo Xavier & Companhia
Farmácia Lemos
Casa Botónia
Livraria Académica
Casa dos Forros
There is uncertainty about the start of activity of this Armazéns (department store), but it is likely that it began its activity between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The store is easily recognized for the proud peacock’s ostentation on the building’s ArtDeco façade - a staple of this historic commercial establishment.
Company founded in 1934, sells Portuguese raw material and wool. In recent years, it has been providing consulting services of knitting, crochet and embroidery. This shop is an integral part of the city’s history and is visited by many customers from the third or fourth generation of families loyal to this commercial house.
It is one of the emblematic spaces of the city that, over time, has been providing a very useful service to the population. Founded in 1780 by the Frades Carmelitas do Carmo (Carmelite Friars), this pharmacy was famous for the work carried out at a scientific research level and for the products sold there. It has a museum with a rich decades-old collection.
The first business records of this house specialising in the trade of buttons and haberdashery date from 1936. However, some people associate it with the birth date of filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira in 1908. This shop is filled with hundreds of boxes with numerous buttons. Due to the diversity and richness of its offer, it is here that many fashion designers come to buy their supplies.
A century-old bookshop and a key cultural reference of Porto. Many illustrious figures of literature like Miguel Torga or José Régio came here. Founded on 16 November 1912, it continues its original mission - to dignify the book and place it where it is entitled, preserving the passion for book activity.
This haberdashery has been in the same family since 1958. Throughout the ages it has combined tradition and modernity in selling products related to sewing, knitting and clothing decorations. Since the 1980’s it stands out for its carefully planned and executed shop windows. This shop is in the memories of several generations of local people.
