Greetings to all you travelers and food enthusiasts visiting Santa Fe, New Mexico, one of the most exciting culinary cities in the Southwest! As an avid food lover myself, I am thrilled to share with you the many scrumptious delights that await.

Having owned a small, successful café in Santa Monica, California and enjoyed a wonderful career in the film business, I now work in Santa Fe as a private chef. Self taught, I have been passionate about cooking since I was seven years old when I volunteered to make fried chicken for my Boy Scout troop, sitting alone on a log in the dead of winter over an open fire. I also write about food in local publications, interviewing chefs, restaurateurs, and local personalities about cuisine, art, and the meaning of life.

Bordered by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Santa Fe is the oldest capital city in the country with a long-standing culinary tradition that continues to evolve. Our traditional New Mexican cuisine is characterized by the smoky earthiness of blue corn tortillas, pinto beans, red and green chile, fried polenta, and Indian tacos, but it shares the table with cuisine from all corners of the globe, created by both up-and-coming and award-winning chefs.

In fact, each year, when the James Beard Foundation committee announces their nominees for Best Chef of the Southwest, Santa Fe boasts at least one or two candidates. In 2022, Chef Fernando Olea of Sazón won the prestigious award. In 2005, Mark Kiffin of The Compound Restaurant won.

What you’ll find upon arrival is that our inland city has all the sophistication and diversity of a major coastal city, combined with the charm and downhome feel of a modest-sized town. From one end to the other, you’ll find culinary gems and a burgeoning artisanal bread-baking scene tucked away in strip malls, side streets, and main drags. You’ll also be excited by the fine dining opportunities and perhaps build your itinerary around the worldclass cuisine we create. There are, too, a growing number of local brewpubs with dynamic menus created by young chefs looking to make a name for themselves by cooking a wide array of global and local fusion cuisine. Suffice it to say, you can experience the mysteries of international cuisine, the foundational flavors of New Mexican food, and the taste sensations of food truck fare all in the midst of this Southwest hub.

In between meals, explore one of our 20+ museums or one of our 250+ galleries, 100 of which line Canyon Road, ski or board at our local mountain, hike the lush trails in the Santa Fe National Forest, shop for Native American jewelry on the Plaza

or produce at our vibrant Farmers’ Market, where many of our chefs frequent. Afterwards, try a café to savor a locally roasted coffee, a spicy red chile hot chocolate, a scoop of made-on-site gelato, or any number of delectable, baked-justthis-morning artisanal treats.

Another option is to plan your trip around one of our excellent culinary events, where you can experience many of our finest restaurants at once: In the early spring, Santa Fe holds Restaurant Week, a 10-day festival, where you can explore a wide array of prix-fixe menus at value pricing. In the fall, consider the stellar Wine & Chile Fiesta, a world-class culinary event, featuring a global assortment of wines paired with small plates especially created by local chefs. It’s truly not to be missed.

However you choose to visit Santa Fe, I hope you lean on this handy Guide to direct you. See the sidebar on Using the Guide, and please note that our Guide features a marvelous selection of our 400+ restaurants in town, but certainly not all!

If you are similar to me when you go out to dine, you love to be in interesting places with friendly people eating food that enlivens you and exceeds your expectations. You can absolutely do that here. Santa Fe is known for its fantastic cuisine and its friendliness, so come for a visit and eat very well!

–Mark Oppenheimer

Celebrating more than 75 years of continuous local ownership!

The Plaza Café, Santa Fe’s oldest restaurant, has been serving highly acclaimed, authentic traditional dishes since 1905. In 1947, Dan (Dionysus) Razatos, a Greek immigrant with an American dream, took over the Plaza Café and his family has been feeding Santa Fe ever since. Dan married a local girl named Beneranda Maria Saiz and together they ran the Plaza and raised six children. As their children grew, they all worked at the Plaza and helped to create what the restaurant is today.

Sassella is the name of a tiny Italian Village. It is also a type of wine. Nestled at the base of Alpine slopes in Northern Italy, the small town of Sassella has persevered over the centuries. It is located in Lombardy’s Valtellina valley. Sassella is derived from the Italian word for ‘rock’. The village prides itself in vineyards planted on terraces cut into the side of its rocky slopes. Surrounded by high snow-capped mountains and set among the vineyards is the Santuario Madonna della Sassella, a tenth-century chapel that looks out over the meandering river Adda and the ancient town of Sondrio. It is these historic vineyards that produce a distinctive grape called Chiavennasca from which the Sassella wines are crafted. Executive Chef Cristian Pontiggia hails from this region and this culture. He brings the underlying tradition of fine Italian dining into contemporary world cuisine, producing innovative dishes that are a delight to the eye as well as the palate. In addition to working at two Michelin Star awarded restaurants in Europe, Chef Pontiggia has received awards for cooking and wine knowledge from the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, and the American Culinary Federation. He is also a Superchef for Cooking with Kids. The Italian government recognizes him as a Master Chef and he holds a culinary degree that certifies him as a Doctor of Enogastronomy. This restaurant provides a unique stage to highlight Chef Pontiggia’s culinary artistry. We invite you to experience the merging of new world cuisine with old world traditions in his signature style. Sassella is open for lunch and dinner. Please visit our website for full menus and hours.

Chef Olea creates sophisticated flavors using Old Mexico’s indigenous and culinary traditions alongside ingredients from around the world. His menu is deliberately small, featuring fresh and locally sourced produce and meats when possible.

Chef Olea is well known for his exquisite moles, a sauce of complex flavors that usually includes toasted and ground spices, seeds, nuts, chocolate and chile.
