ASTRID LINDGREN
AND HER WORLD
Few children’s authors are as beloved as Astrid Lindgren. The stories about Pippi Longstocking, Emil, Karlsson on the Roof and others have made her famous and respected all over the world. even though it is 70 years since Pippi Longstocking was first published, Astrid’s books continue to attract new readers simply because they are so good. In Vimmerby you can have a close look at Astrid Lindgren’s life and work. Visit her childhood home at Astrid Lindgren’s Näs, where Astrid Anna Emilia Ericsson was born on 14 November 1907. This is where Astrid climbed the lemonade tree, which is still standing, played with her siblings in the toolshed, jumped in the hay and got to hear her first fairytale in Kristin’s kitchen. As an adult Astrid moved to Stockholm but the inspiration for her books was often found in her happy childhood years in Vimmerby. Everyday life on the farm at Näs and in rural Småland is always present in the stories. What we encounter is simply Astrid’s playful way of looking at the world and nature. Many stories have become muchloved films that were shot in the areas surrounding Vimmerby. By using a new app you can visit the various filming locations and experience them in real life. You are sure to recognise several of them
from the films. At each location there is a sign that explains what happened right there.
at astrid lindgren’s world you will arrive directly in a world of fairytales and will meet Pippi Longstocking, Ronja Robbersdaughter, Emil and all the others. Don’t be scared if police constables Kling & Klang and Mrs. Prysselius suddently set off in pursuit of Pippi. And imagine joining Pippi Longstocking for a birthday party this summer when it is her birthday. If you have read the books you will recognise both the characters and the environments, but you will never have experienced them in this way before. Here you can step straight into adventures and pranks from Astrid Lindgren’s stories. Don’t forget to visit the home of Emil, Ida and the Svensson family in Katthult – a genuine Småland farmers’ region that looks just like when Astrid Lindgren was growing up in Vimmerby at the beginning of the 1900’s. If you have far to go it is good to know that you can sleep comfortably right next to Astrid Lindgren’s World. Their own cottages and camp4
site are located just 250 metres from the entrance. The cottages are built like soldiers’ cottages, similar to the ones that have existed in Småland since the end of the 17th century. There are three different cottage types as well as several campsites.
astrid lindgren is always of current interest. She was a woman who fought for children’s rights, for nature conservation, for animal rights, for culture and reading, for justice, peace and non-violence. For that she is still admired and loved. And that is why you will find her on the new Swedish 20 kronor note to be released in October this year. THE APP WILL GUIDE YOU An app is now available with a map that guides you to twelve different filming locations around the area. Signs in Swedish, English and German tell your more about what happened at each location. Scan a QR code with your smartphone in order to see pictures and film with film extras who talk about their memories from the filming location. Download the app “Barnfilmbyn” for free from Google Play and Appstore.
VIMMERBY MARIANNELUND
CHILDREN’S FILM VILLAGE IN MARIANNELUND In the 70’s, in connection with the filming of Emil, the folk high school in Mariannelund was transformed into the headquarters for film making. This forms the basis for what is known today as the Children’s Film Village where visitors may look at filming locations and how films were made in the 70’s. WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT THE ACTUAL FILMING LOCATIONS? Sevedstorp – Here the three Bullerby farms are located. Norra gatan in Mariannelund – in two different locations on this street the indoor scenes of Emil’s Toolshed and the Doctor in Mariannelund were filmed. The outdoor scenes were filmed in Gibberyd. Mossjön – Where Emil and Alfred went swimming. Gibberyd – Here the outdoor scenes from Katthult were filmed. Stensjö village – Here several scenes from Emil and Bullerby were filmed. Outdoor Kingdom
Biking and hiking, boating and fishing, jogging and paddling – outdoor enthusiasts are never short of something to do in the area around Mullsjö, just up the road from Jönköping.
HAGÅRDS LAGÅRD One of Europe’s most secure high-ropes system means you’ll feel safe on the forest course here, eight meters above ground. The adventure park also has two ziplines, one of them 150 metres long. No age or weight limits but the safety equipment has to fit. Children need to be accompanied by an adult. And if you haven’t a head for heights, there are paintball and shooting activities on offer at this action-minded outdoor centre on the municipal border with Habo.
It’s called the Open-Air Kingdom and it’s easy to see why. The range of activities is striking, whether you’re looking for action or just want to relax in beautiful surroundings and breathe the crystal clear air. Take a zipline ride through the treetops, ski downhill or cross-country, paddle through calm blue waters or ride into deep forest areas. There are 14 hiking trails here, 75 kilometres of prepared snow tracks and plenty of fishing waters to choose from. Also, Sweden’s first golf course was established in this recreational paradise, dating back to 1888. And good food and accommodation are always close at hand, for instance at the time-honoured Hotell Mullsjö, which also has swimming pools, a gym and Qigong classes. In other words, there’s something here for everyone – all year round.
KYRKEKVARN Cottage with pony! Here you can rent a cottage with an Icelandic pony thrown in! Then you can just ride off along the winding river valley. Or if you prefer, paddle through it in a canoe. Or to get the best of both worlds, canoeists can swap places with pony riders halfway! Try soaking luxuriously in a wood-fired outdoor bathtub at the end of the day. Situated just outside Mullsjö, the centre also welcomes dogs – there’s even an agility course to keep them fit and happy! MULLSJÖ ALPIN A firm family favourite, this is one of the best-equipped alpine ski centres in southern Sweden. Its 60 snow cannons can produce 600m3 of snow per hour! Seven pistes of varying grades, including a beginners’ slope, and five lifts where you seldom have to queue. Snowboarders can revel both in a big jump and in a number of smaller jumps. If you’ve never tried skiing downhill or snowboarding before, Mullsjö Alpin is the place to start! Equipment can be hired.

”…auctions were so much fun in Lönneberga and in all of Småland” as told by Astrid Lindgren in the book about Emil in Lönneberga. And that is exactly how it still is, but nowadays it is not as crazy as the farm auction in Backhorva. From time to time it is still possible to attend an old-fashioned farm auction but nowadays the big Sunday pleasure is to visit some of the hundreds of fleamarkets that you can find in Småland. A fleamarket could be anything from large, well-organised shops to a small outhouse at the home of a Smålander. Smålanders are known to be thrifty - the art of saving, keeping and reusing - with a special love for old things. At a fleamarket you may find anything from folk art, woven and embroidered fabrics, furniture of all types, art, books, silver, porcelain, yes you could even find a bargain such as “grandma’s coffee set” for very little money. Close to 200 glassworks have come and gone in Småland since 1742 and have left behind lots of nice, sparkling crystal glass that you may be lucky enough to find at the fleamarkets. To visit a fleamarket is addictive!

It is easier than you think to get close to the king of the forest – you can even take a train all the way through the park. the largest deer animal in Europe is timid. Despite the existence of more than 200,000 moose in Sweden and that they may weigh up to 800 kilos, they are not easy to discover. A safe and exciting way to get close to them is to visit a moose park. In the Markaryd park, Smålandet, you can get near them by taking the car or the train along a three kilometre road that is lined by both moose and bison. If you choose to take the train you will be given a twig which the moose are happy to chew on – the best way to become popular with the king of the forest. Småland is one of Sweden’s most moose-dense regions, both in terms of moose enclosures and the number of moose in the forest. Almost 30,000 moose are moving around in Småland. But life has not always been easy for the Swedish moose. At the beginning of the 19th century they came close to extinction due to extensive hunting. You understand that the moose has been valuable because it is the most common motif in
Swedish rock carvings, which suggests that the interest dates back to the Stone Age approx. 8,000 years BC. The first person said to have mentioned the moose in writing was Julius Ceasar 50 years BC. Sweden’s largest moose park opened in 1995 and you can still visit it in Elinge south of Ljungby. Here you can feed the moose bull Bruno who figured in the German TV series Inga Lindström, or buy moose antlers, moose sweaters, moose erasers or moose droppings(!). If you want be sure to come home with not just a close-moose-encounter, but with even more nice or funny moose souvenirs you can visit Laganland Moose Park. Here you will find Sweden’s largest assortment of moose products and a “mooséum” with texts in English and German. They also sell the incredibly popular warning signs for moose that you may see along the roads in Sweden – choose between the one for 70 km/h or 110 km/h. See you in the Småland moose lands! Where preservation is a part of the culture
Historically, people in Småland had to eke out a living in an often harsh environment and make the most out of what little they possessed. Emigration to America saved many from starvation. For those who stayed, ingenuity and a firm resolve were essential – as were good, solid materials. People lived in small wooden cottages, toiled on the land and saved and preserved whatever they could. The legacy of this era is clearly visible today. Museums and churches, mills and old towns bear witness to the past, fascinating reminders of a bygone age, preserved for the future. The wooden town centres of Eksjö and Gränna, the ‘Wooden Cathedral’ at Habo, the Huskvarna industrial museum… the list of Småland’s historical features is endless. A source of pride to local inhabitants, they have become a source of enchantment to visitors from many parts of the world. Have a look round yourself!
HABO KYRKA – A WOODEN CATHEDRAL Close to lake Vättern, the church is unique in its architecture, resembling a cathedral but built entirely of wood, in 1680. It is shaped like a basilica, with a high nave and two lower side aisles. The magnificent interior was painted from ceiling to floor by two local artists in 1741-43 and illustrates Martin Luther’s catechism. Guided tours available in English. KOMSTAD KVARN Time seems to have stood still in this beautifully preserved rural setting outside Sävsjö, with its sawmill, waterfall, village shop and café. People have in fact lived here since the Bronze Age. Among them was Jonas Brunck, who emigrated to America in the 17th century and is said to have given the Bronx in New York its name! Expert guiding in English. HUSQVARNA INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM A well-known brand worldwide, Husqvarna has gone down the peace road, abandoning arms manufacture in favour of sewing machines, stoves, chainsaws, motorcycles and kitchen appliances etc. The museum, spread over 2,400 square metres, traces this development, displaying the goods that have made the company famous. Open all year round.

There’s a welcome in the links!
Golfers visiting Sweden and looking for variety tend to make their way to the beautiful countryside around Jönköping, which boasts no fewer than nine major clubs. No wonder the city has been proclaimed Sweden’s golfing Mecca! The rolling stretches of lakeside grassland and woodland that characterise the courses here make for ideal playing conditions. Sand Golf Club, by way of contrast, with its high dunes, sandy soil and deep bunkers, is about as close to an Irish or Scottish links course as you can get. And it’s just a short drive from the city centre. Several of the clubs offer excellent restaurant facilities and congenial accommodation in delightful surroundings, never far from the glittering lakes that are a feature of Småland province. Golf here is so much more than a sport. It’s relaxation, social interaction and an aesthetic experience – and for some, almost a way of life!
HOOK Originally a four-hole recreational course, the Hooks Herrgård golf centre now offers two beautifully maintained 18-hole courses, a 9-hole par three course and an excellent practice facility. Its lakeside location is ranked among the most attractive in Sweden. The pastoral elegance of the Park Course is ideal for a friendly round, while the treelined Forest Course offers more of a challenge. ISABERG One of the main attractions of Isaberg is its twin 18-hole courses overlooking lake Hammarsjön. Many golfers have described the last four holes of the East Course as the most beautiful in the country. A 6-hole pay-and-play course was completed in 2014. Golf carts are available for hire. WIREDAHOLM Embedded in the lush Småland countryside, the Wiredaholm venue with its large, elegant manor house, lakeside restaurant and light, attractive conference facilities is a popular destination for many. The 18-hole course is situated in technically interesting parkland and woodland. Its varying degrees of difficulty make for an interesting challenge in a pleasant setting!

ADVENTURES FOR EVERYONE
In Småland you will encounter adventure in Sweden’s southernmost wilderness with forests, lakes and sea. Here are a few suggestions for some amazing experiences.
in deep forests near klavreström in the Kingdom of Crystal a breathtaking experience awaits at the Little Rock Lake Zipline, which is the largest zipline track in Northern Europe. You will be travelling hanging in a harness along a wire stretched between towers, platforms and trees at a maximum speed of 70 km/h and up to a maximum of 52 metres above the ground on eleven different lines. As far as the eye can see you will be greeted by forests, sparkling rivers and lakes. The tour is adventurous but safe. Two experienced guides will accompany each group and you can choose between two different tracks; black and green of various lengths and difficulty. Should you wish to stay overnight there are exclusive accommodation at the top of the high towers – sky camping! Not far from the zipline, outside Vetlanda, is the Kleva Mine dating back to the 17th century. The mine is now open for exciting excursions along the mine shafts where only bats are resid-
ing. You may explore the winding shafts on your own or with a guide. This is also the place where both young and old can go on a real treasure hunt! You can even go dog-sledding in Sweden’s southernmost wilderness. This you can do at Nystedt Husky Tur & Natur in Hökensås to the west of the lake Vättern where lively sled dogs are waiting to take you out. They love to run and work year round on bare ground as well as snow. There are many adventures: run your own dog span at an amazing speed, go mini dog-sledding with the children or go for a quiet husky walk in the deep forest.
Further south in Kalmarsund, outside Bergkvara, are the largest colonies of the Baltic Sea’s harbour seals – curious, fast and skilled swimmers. You board the boat in Kolboda or in Bergkvara for the seal safari. Really exciting is a technical form of freeclimbing using no ropes which is called bouldering. Västervik has become world famous as a climbing destination since there are as many as 22 areas here that may be referred to as “hiking trails” for climbing. At Västervik climbing centre you may try out bouldering and indoor climbing walls under the supervision of an instructor.
the småland coast also provides adventure. Idö Skärgårdsliv makes trips to the outer archipelago of Västervik to look for seals and the mighty sea eagle. You will encounter the three metres long and 200–300 kilos heavy grey seals and high above the horizon the sea eagle glides around in circles.
lake åsnen south of Växjö is home to the rare osprey. With Getnö Gård as the starting point you can go on a guided osprey safari by boat, but only by mid August when the sensitive birds have bred. Before that time you may look at sea eagles and other birds.

THE KINGDOM OF
CRYSTAL
It looks so easy when the masters are shaping the glass. The glowing mass first appears to be alive and unpredictable but the glass-blowers catch it, blow it into beautiful shapes and rotate the substance until it becomes shimmering and thin. in the kingdom of crystal you also have the chance to try this magical art. At Kosta Glascenter, Skrufs Glasbruk and Målerås Glasbruk those who dare may try to blow their own glass. Or alternatively, you may work together with a glass-blower to realise the dream of a glass object designed entirely by you. Skulls, exotic animals and a tattoo machine made entirely of glass. The glass pieces by the designer Ludvig Löfgren are really something special. For the past few years he has been associated with Målerås Glasbruk. A totally Swedish glassworks that this year celebrates its 125 year anniversary
and that definitely demonstrates that the Kingdom of Crystal is very much alive. The exhibition hall Designarenan is exhibiting glass from several leading artists and you have the chance to experience the craftsmanship at close range. From your lunch table at the inn you actually look straight into the work going on in the glassworks. There are many glassworks to choose from in the Kingdom of Crystal. Kosta, Skruf, Målerås, Nybro and Pukeberg are some of the glassworks with the longest tradition, but there are also glass studios that have been established during recent years, for example Transjö Hytta and Mickejohans

Kosta also invites you to stop at the Kosta Boda Art Hotel, a hotel that is unlike any other. Here you can also visit the Kosta Boda Art Gallery and shop in the Kosta Boda Shop and Kosta Hem. Exciting and inexpensive second-rate shopping can be found both here and at the other glassworks in the Kingdom of Crystal. An enjoyable old tradition at several of the glassworks is the hot shop herring, a feast eaten inside the actual glassworks while being entertained. When you have spent the day visiting various glassworks or shopping in the glass shops, this is the perfect end to the day. Welcome to an evening of warmth and good company!

MÅLERÅS At Målerås Glasbruk, celebrating its 125 year anniversary this year, only art glass and decorative glass is produced nowadays. A visit to the glassworks has a lot to offer. See how the glass is produced, try to blow your own glass or purchase crystal objects by famous designers at factory prices. 2
KOSTA BODA The glassworks at Kosta were established in 1742 and is the oldest glassworks still in use in Sweden. Here you may take a guided tour, see works by leading glass artists and shop in the factory outlet. Next to the glassworks you will find Kosta Boda Art Hotel - an internationally unique design hotel in glass and stone, designed by Kosta Boda’s designers. 3 3
GLASS FACTORY The Glass Factory is an experience-based, interactive glass museum. The museum acts as a centre of knowledge and creative meeting place for artists, designers and visitors. Here you can enjoy Sweden’s most extensive art glass collection, approx. 40,000 items from different glassworks by some 50 artists who have worked with the material glass, from the 18th century until today.

HOT SHOP HERRING Hot Shop Herring is a glassworks tradition that may be experienced at the glassworks of Kosta, Målerås and Pukeberg. In addition to good food, there is entertainment as well as a sing-along in the glassworks. Originating from poverty at the beginning of the 1900’s, the hot shop herring has evolved into a festive evening in the heat from the ovens and good company. MÅLERÅS

DREAM ACCOMMODATION FOR EVERY TASTE
The Swedish saying “from castle to hut” is certainly true in the case of Småland. You can literally choose to live in a castle or behind a wind shelter next to a hiking trail. In between these two you will find red cottages, well cared for campsites, hostels and exciting hotels. perhaps småland is most famous for its red and white cottages that are often located close to lakes, in the forest or in the beautiful cultural landscape. The best experience is then just around the corner as you wander directly into nature, to the fishing lake or jump on your bike for a ride on winding dirt roads. You can also “Live on a Farm” and take care of the animals – both self-catering and Bed & Breakfast is available. There are also holiday chalet villages if you wish to live close to services and other activities. For example Kosta Hotel and Cottages, the Västervik resort Lysingsbaden-by-the-Sea (see page 43) and Isaberg Mountain Resort (see page 56.) In Sweden hostels are mostly of a good standard and provide affordable accommodation. At visitsmaland.se you will find about a hundred to choose from. A few gems are Korrö beside the Ronneby river or Åsens By where you actually stay in the middle of a cultural heritage reserve. The accommodation in itself may be worth the trip – spend a few nights where you get an
added spice in a design hotel, high up in a tree or out on a lake.
design is part of everyday life for Smålanders – crystal, wood, textiles, metal. And it is noticeable in several hotels. The latest addition is VOX Hotel in the middle of central Jönköping with breathtaking views of the lake Vättern. Design down to the fingertips created by the architect Magnus Månsson. In Växjö the award-winning restaurant PM & Vänner has opened a gastrohotel, PM & Vänner Hotel, which reflects the philosophy forest, lake and meadow using materials such as limestone from Öland and massive oak floors from the Småland forest. The most secret design hotel is perhaps Ekebacken Hotel and Conference in Markaryd where primarily Danish design from the 60’s is dominating the interior. At the design hotel Scandic Hotel in Värnamo local design is important and the rooms are decorated with furniture from designers that include Bruno Mathsson and Källemo. Huskvarna City Hotel has a playful design all of its own and all rooms are different. 22
Hooks Herrgård
Kosta Boda Art Hotel could not exist anywhere but in the Kingdom of Crystal in Småland. Here Kosta Boda’s best designers have created environments in art glassware throughout the entire hotel - in the rooms, in the glass bar, at the bottom of the pool in the awardwinning spa... and all of the art is for sale.
close to water is also a characteristic of Småland - Garpen’s lighthouse station outside Bergkvara you can even rent entirely for yourself with accommodation for 20 people. Otherwise you can book a room in the lighthouse guards’ cottages and fall asleep to the sound of the waves of Kalmar Sound. On the large Hindsjön you will be rocked to sleep out on the waves. You will live on one of the rafts of Alsterbro Mini Hotel and can stay right out in the middle of the lake and at Ödevata fishing camp you live in a tipi on your very own island. Hjortseryd Conference and Wilderness can on the other hand offer a cottage with its very own fishing lake included in the cottage rent. You can even live like a bird and wake up to

Husflottens Bed & Breakfast birdsong in Korpaboet, Kosta. Here you will stay in a tree house, six metres up in an old oak tree. The house contains two rooms, a toilet, a double bed and a breakfast kitchen. There are plenty of manors and mansions all of them with their own enchanting charm. Hooks Herrgård dating from the 14th century has been complemented by a spa where you get the sensation of being in the middle of the Småland nature with the Hoka lake close by. Others that may be mentioned are Stufvenäs Inn at Kalmar Sound and Toftaholm’s Manor Hotel beautifully situated by the lake Vidöstern. Typical for the manors is that they are situated by a lake, have beautiful state rooms and a good kitchen.

and then there are the castles. Gränsö Castle with accompanying spa can be found directly by the port entry to Västervik and in Växjö there is one of Sweden’s youngest castles, Teleborg castle, which count Bonde gave to his young wife as a morning gift. Now you can reside and sleep like royalty in the countess’s state rooms.

CAMPING CLOSE TO NATURE
Småland is definitely a region for campers no matter whether you come with a camper, caravan or tent. Many camp sites are in a beautiful location and often next to a lake or the sea.
the contrasts are great – a wilderness camping with no electricity or a camp site close to a city with all services and close to restaurants and shops. At visitsmaland.se there are almost 100 camp sites listed. Suggested nice camp sites in the archipelago are First Camp Gunnarsö, Kustcamp Gamleby, Tättö Havsbad, Västervik Resort Lysingsbadet (the only one with five stars). If you really want to get away from a stressful daily life you should go to Hätteboda Wilderness Camping, deep in the forest with clear spring lakes. It is considered one of the best in Europe. There is no electricity, you will work together, chop your own wood and pump your own water. There are also many nature camp sites that provide a little more comfort but are located in the middle of nature with longer distances to the nearest neighbour. Camp sites close to the city where you can walk to the city are for example Eksjö Camping & Konferens, Östanå Camping in Vetlanda, Stensö Camping in Kalmar and Grännastrandens camping. 24

The Emigrant Trail Bike, hike or paddle in the footsteps of the emigrants

Korrö
Hostel and hotel, restaurant, café and shop in an old craft village, with a scenic location next to the Ronneby creek. Nature activities such as fishing, hiking and canoeing for both adults and children. www.korro.se
Life in Sweden in the 19th century was hard. Many Swedes were poor and dreamed of a better life in America. Almost a quarter of all Swedes chose to emigrate and many of them came from this very district. The 20th century’s most beloved Swedish author, Vilhelm Moberg, was born here and he wrote his novels inspired by this place, and its hard working people. Based on Moberg’s novels about the Emigrants, Björn Ulveaus and Benny Andersson, former members of the world-famous group ABBA, wrote the musical ”Kristina from Duvemåla”. The musical was a great success and has also been set up as a concert in both London and New York. Hiking in the footsteps of Vilhelm Moberg is a journey in a typical Småland landscape, with birdsong, the smell of spruce forests and peaceful silence. Travel through woods and meadows, along lakes and stone walls, past cottages and fences. You can feel the echoes of history when passing through the famous villages and locations from Moberg’s world famous book about ”the Emigrants”. The novel’s locations with names such as Ljuder, Långasjö, Korpamoen, Moshult and Duvemåla aren’t fictional. They really do exist. In Småland. The Emigrant Trail consists of both a hiking trail and a bike path. Along one stretch it is also possible to go by canoe. Both trails are round trips with accommodation options at suitable distances. The places where you stay overnight are hostels in idyllic surroundings and of a good standard. When you purchase a package, food is served at all places. Restaurants with locally produced food are located in Korrö and Grimsnäs. You can easily book tour packages with different lengths and varied contents of accommodation and meals at www.visitsmaland.se

THE BLUE
SMÅLAND
Many people associate deep and enchanted forests with Småland. That is only partly true. With more than 20,000 lakes and waterways as well as a long coast Småland can provide some amazing blue experiences.

KAYAKING IN THE ARCHIPELAGO OF MISTERHULT If you are looking for magnificent sea kayaking where you can find your own island to spend the night on, the beautiful archipelago of Misterhult is perfect. Plenty of islands and few people makes this place a paradise for kayakers. A classic starting point is Klintemåla. A PEACEFUL CANOE TRIP ON VÄRENDSLEDEN A wonderful way to experience the peacefulness of Småland waters is to slide out in a canoe. In Småland there are many canoe trails and canoe rental agencies. One example is Värendsleden – 120 kilometres of waterway that winds through rivers and spreads out into several lakes. It extends from Asa in the north to Mörrumsån in the south, passes by Växjö and Huseby Bruk on its way to the sea. 1
TAKE THE ÖLAND FERRY TO BYXELKROK From Oskarshamn there are daily departures in the summer to Byxelkrok in the north of Öland. Bring your bike for free, pack a picknick basket and enjoy a lovely day out both at sea and on land. Solkustturer also organises shrimp cruises with live music and archipelago tours. 2
KALMARFLUNDRAN Kalmar is already a beautiful city from land, but even more exciting and beautiful from the water. A tour with the sightseeing boat Kalmarflundran takes you around Kvarnholmen – the island that today is the centre of Kalmar. In just under an hour you get to see many of the sights of Kalmar, while getting a sense of the city’s quiet interior waters. 3
STEAM OUT THIS SUMMER Enjoy Småland in a peaceful way which brings you back in time - by steamboat. The steamboat Boxholm II departs from Tranås and has been operating on the lake Sommen since 1904. A trip with Boxholm II will give you the best of the lake, which is said to have as many islands as there are days in a year. The steamer Thor is Sweden’s oldest wood-burning steamer still in operation and it provides tours on Helgasjön and sometimes through Sweden’s most southern locks in Åby.
3
ENJOY VÄTTERN AND VISINGSÖ The island of Visingsö is just a 30-minute boat trip away from Gränna and ideal for a daytrip. The island is best explored by bicycle. But you can also hike or take a special horse-drawn carriage (known as a remmalag). 27
TAKE TO THE ROAD for those wanting a nature experience while feeling the wings of history the Emigrant Trail is a good choice. The full length of the trail that follows in Vilhelm Moberg’s footprints is 120 km and those who would like to maximise their experience may book accommodation and meal packages. You choose if you wish to hike, bike or even paddle a canoe for some of the distance. Another alternative if you wish to hike in history’s footsteps is to set out on a pilgrim trail. There are several trails to choose from and some of the trails converge in the middle of Småland by the Nydala Abbey area outside Värnamo. Three other gems for the hiker are the Ostkust trail, the Lönneberga trail and the Seved trail all of which offer varied terrain and many impressions. If you have time and energy it is possible to hike all three of the trails one after the other but you can also pick a few goodies from each or all of the trails.
Another beautiful place to explore by foot is Utsikterna’s trail which goes between Lövhult and Mariannelund and where you can discover Skurugata, a mystical place in the form of a 800 metre long ravine. Either camp in nature or take the chance to combine the nature experience with some well-deserved luxury at Eksjö Stadshotell where you can book a package for accommodation and dinner. In the surroundings around Ryfors you can see old mills and relax in Bottnaryd’s primeval forest. If you would like to stay for a few days it is recommended that you set up base camp in Mullsjö from where there are a number of nice day trips to choose from. Another suggestion is to experience the 80 km long Kalmarsund hiking trail. The trail which mainly extends along the coast consists of older highways, country lanes and coastal roads. Here it is easy to find shelter when you want to rest
or make a fire. And weather permitting, there are also plenty of nice swimming areas along the road such as Ljungnäs, Ekö and Vita Sand. Some parts of the Kalmarsund trail are also suitable for bikes. Småland, which incidentally has the greatest number of lakes of any Swedish region, also has another treasure – the magic of the lakes. A smorgasbord of 5,000 lakes that must be experienced. A few nice lakes that are interesting to bike all the way around are Vättern, Landsjön, Åsnen, Bolmen and Sommen. Bring a packed lunch and find your own spot for a picnic along the way. Should you wish to combine the biking with canoeing and fishing a suggestion is to explore the 140 km long bike trail around Åsnen. The beautiful lake has an untouched archipelago which will also become a national park in the near future. WWW.VISITSMALAND.SE
28
Enjoy scenic surroundings, endless forests filled with berries and mushrooms, thousands of beautiful lakes and birdsong. A vacation in Småland gives you many impressions and the best way to discover nature’s treasures is either in your hiking boots or on a bike. Let the pursuit of nature’s best experiences begin.
COMMON RIGHT OF ACCESS TO PRIVATE LAND The Swedish common right of access to private land gives everyone who visits nature a unique opportunity. Anybody can go hiking, canoeing, biking or riding through nature. You are also allowed to camp for one night without asking permission from the landowner. What you are not allowed to do can be summed up as follows: Do not disturb wildlife or destroy nature. For example you are not allowed to walk across fields or plots, break off branches from trees and bushes or pick protected plants. Also do not harm wildlife or fish from lakes unless you have a licence. If you should bring a dog you must keep it under control and preferably on the leash. When it comes to nature’s pantry it is permitted to pick berries and mushrooms but leave the acorns. When you spend time in a national park or in a nature reserve the rules are slightly different. In Småland there are three national parks. Store Mosse, Norra Kvill and Blå Jungfrun. The visitor must be more careful with nature there. It is not permitted to make a fire or disturb animals or plant life and it is not permitted to camp in the national parks. In every national park or nature reserve information is available on what is permitted or not permitted in the area concerned. WWW.VISITSMALAND.SE

DISCOVER THE
WILDERNESS
In Småland there are three national parks, areas with particularly attractive features where everyone can find peace and harmony and enjoy the beauty of nature. Lace up your hiking boots, it’s time to discover Sweden’s southermost wilderness.
if you wish to visit a national park in Småland you have no less than three alternatives: Norra Kvill, Store Mosse and Blå Jungfrun. There is no entrance fee and the national parks are open all year round. The only thing required is that you are very careful with nature’s treasures. You can freely pick berries and mushrooms but it is not permitted to pick flowers, camp, have your dog off the leash or make a fire. 1. The national park Norra Kvill is where the well-kept primeval forest intermingles with huge boulders and a visit to the park will give the visitor a true nature experience. Hike in the untouched forest and find peace among the pine trees, some as old as 350 years where the very largest are measuring 2.5 metres in diameter and are 35 metres high. A special place in the park worth visiting is the beautiful pond Stora Idegölen. Norra Kvill is close to the road that goes between Vimmerby and Ydrefors. Follow the signs to find the way to the park’s parking area where you will also find information about the area.
2. Another kind of nature experience awaits in the Store Mosse national park. Here you will find Sweden’s largest connected raised bog area south of Lappland. The area is largely untouched and if you look out over the bog area you will see pine-forested sand dunes, known locally as “rocknar”. The gate to the national park is Naturum with exhibitions, an observation tower and barbecue areas. There are also several hiking trails that start from here and if you want you can join in activities such as snowshoeing, adventure tours and bird watching. Kävsjön is one of the most important nesting sites for cranes in southern Sweden and in the winter you may look for golden eagles from the national park’s hide-outs. If you would like to explore the area for longer than a day there are some preserved dwelling houses in Svänö and Lövö, currently being used as hostels. 3. Blå Jungfrun is the name of an island that is also a national park. A mythical place with a magical landscape that has attracted people throughout the ages. The island which is located in Kalmarsund 32
consists of red-coloured cliffs that got their polished surface from the inland ice sheet. The easiest way to reach Blå Jungfrun is to take a day trip that departs from Oskarshamn. Blå Jungfrun’s surface is not really that big, only 65 hectares, but nature is showing off a great diversity with flat rocks, caves, and even a beautiful broad-leaved deciduous forest. Do not forget to visit the stone maze and keep your eyes open and you may see either a black guillemot or a sea eagle. If you have time for even more adventure Åsnen is an area you must visit. A unique and untouched lake archipelago soon to be classified as a national park. Here is a kingdom of islands with approx. 200 forested islands and islets. There are no built-up areas so the feeling of wilderness is very apparent. Take the chance to explore this unique environment by canoeing through the nice surroundings, and bring your fishing rod as it is said that you can catch perch here. WWW.VISITSMALAND.SE

CRAFTSMANSHIP IN THE FOREST
“If you place a Smålander on a rock in the sea, he’ll scrape bits off until he is full”. This is a centuries old saying – and today Smålanders are still associated with ingenuity. The art of making use of anything available, no matter how small or meagre, has turned them into great entrepreneurs. And that may be exactly why there are so many small business owners around.

GRÄNNA & VISINGSÖ THE FORMER COUNTSHIP IS A TOURIST MAGNET
VISINGSÖ GRÄNNA
JÖNKÖPING
Already on the road down to Gränna they appear - the candy canes. The town is wellknown for its striped cane candy and there aren’t just one or two producers but many. to enter one of the old genuine candy shops is a feast for the eyes. Candy canes in all kinds of varieties and they are produced right before your eyes. Stop for a while and watch when the skilled sugar workers work on the special dough. Watch as it transforms before your eyes, from a sticky mass to neatly striped canes, lollipops and candy in all kinds of colours and tastes. If you want to try it yourself you can book yourself into a try-it-out event.
The surroundings of Gränna slope steeply down towards the lake Vättern, Sweden’s second largest lake. It is a beautiful landscape with plenty of orchards, in particular the many apple varieties that are processed into juices and sparkling beverages. An alternative to the candy canes, but just as good, is the thin crispbread from Grännaknäcke. You will find the crispbread bakery and accompanying shop on the main street in Gränna. After having walked around the idyllic little town it feels natural to gravitate towards the harbour. Here the ferry to Visingsö awaits, Vättern’s big island of historic interest. Take your time, for out there there are lots of things worth seeing for all ages. The natural way to travel at a leisurely pace around the island is by horse-drawn carriages. The type of carriage used is said to stem form the early 18th century when king Karl XII held Russian prisoners of war on the island. In Russia these were the kind of carriages used for hunting. The grand ruin of Visingsborg was the stronghold of the king,
but it burnt down in 1718, the same year as the king was killed on the field. Some of the prisoners were then able to return home, others are buried in the mysterious cemetery in the forest close by. The castle Visingsborg was constructed already in the 1560’s by Count Per Brahe. His successors expanded the castle and drew attention to the island’s early history with several monuments. In the 19th century some rune stones were moved to the ruin from the church of Kumlaby. This is also when the island’s unique oak forest was established, one of the largest in Sweden, so as to supply the Navy with the best possible timber. The island has approx. 700 permanent residents and comes to life thoroughly during the summer months. The medieval church of Kumlaby is an obvious place to visit, as well as Persgården’s farm shop. Here you can have a cup of coffee and buy locally-produced organic muesli. If the weather is nice you can go cycling. Rent a bike in the harbour and explore the small roads! WWW.VISITSMALAND.SE

ROOM
Nature, flowers and gardens are important to the people of Småland and have been for a long time. There are many gardens to visit throughout the region. The Flower King Carl von Linné was born here and now Gunillaberg’s Herrgård is the place to go to see the works of the Danish flower artist Tage Andersen.

at gunillaberg’s herrgård Tage Andersen has created a space that is so much more than a garden – it is a cultural centre with exhibitions, art, nature, culture and magic in harmonic unity. In the summer he welcomes visitors to the manor where you can see the creative and beautiful exhibition of his and other people’s work. The manor, which is from the period of Karl XII, has been carefully renovated and blends into the garden. Tage Andersen has his base in Copenhagen and supplies flower art all over the world, but he says that “a new chapter has begun for both Gunillaberg and myself, there is light and air here, room for my art and my animals.” It is difficult to describe the place but when you are there you feel the magic. The manor is also a stage for musicians of the highest standard. 2

in the most southern part of Småland “the flower king” Carl von Linné was once born – the most famous Swede of all time. He was the one who created the modern classification system that grouped plants and animals, he was the foremost botanist at that time. You may visit the 18th century estate where he was born, Linné’s Råshult to the north of Älmult, and see the crops, gardens, houses and cultural heritage reserve – all built to show what it would have looked like at that time. Linné also lent his name to the delicate province flower of Småland, the Linnea that grows deep in the forest but is hard to find today.

the question is whether Astrid Lindgren is the most famous Swede of our time. Her childhood home is located very close to the centre of Vimmerby, which today is part of the cultural centre Astrid Lindren’s Näs. Here you will find the exhibition “The Whole World’s Astrid Lindgren” and now also a newly-planted garden with room for culture, conversations, mischief, discussions, play, seriousness and humour. The green surroundings come from themes that have been important to Astrid Lindgren herself. The ambition for the garden is to inspire and stir emotions, the wild should go hand in hand with the tamed. The gardens at Astrid Lindgren’s Näs are evolving, like a fairytale without an ending, and in June this year chapter 2 will be opened. Eventually the area will cover approx. four hectares of land.

WHERE TIME HAS STOOD STILL There are many places in Småland where you can get a glimpse of what Sweden was once like.
ÅSENS BY This is what it was like in Sweden a hundred years ago. In Åsens By time has simply stood still since the turn of the century 1900. Here you will find traditional fences, the characteristic red-coloured cottages and sometimes horses that work on the fields. It can hardly get more like Småland than this. The former vicarage is open for accommodation and in the coffee house home made baking is served. Sit down, enjoy the smells and sounds and experience the unique calmness.

EKSJÖ – THE UNIQUE WOODEN TOWN The Eksjö Old Town invites all age groups to discover it, on their own or together with a guide. Narrow cobbled streets between low wooden houses provide an idyllic setting that remains with you. It feels like walking around behind the scenes of an Astrid Lindgren film. Eksjö is one of Sweden’s best preserved wooden towns and has been awarded the Europa Nostra. It is almost impossible to resist being seduced by this environment. 2

THE NARROW GAUGE RAILWAY You are comfortably transported through Småland by railcar. The history of the landscape appears outside the window and you take picturesque breaks in places you can only reach by railway. The journey from Hultsfred to Västervik is the longest on a narrow gauge railway in the Nordic countries and takes place in delightful railcars from the 1950’s. The smells, the sounds and the sense of getting closer to life in the past. This is the perfect family outing if the journey itself is the goal.

KALMAR CASTLE Only a real castle has its own fairytale tower. That is how it is at Kalmar Castle and here you will encounter the fairytale fairy in her chamber. A few hundred years ago it was not quite such a nice place. Then it was called the Rödkulla Tower and women accused of being witches were locked in there. The entire castle environment is full of medieval history and through guided tours, exhibitions and events people and stories come to life.

HUSEBY BRUK Huseby is a former ironworks with a living history. Here you can walk around on your own in an ironworks environment from the 17th century or participate in guided tours that include dramatic demonstrations. Colourful personalities from the past talk about events and human destinies. And also about the white manor castle and its fascinating collections. MIDSUMMER EVE 19 JUNE When the light summer night is at its shortest, people celebrate Midsummer. A feast beloved by the Swedes, celebrated in just about every village. According to tradition people get together to dress a maypole with leaves and flowers and then they dance around it. Often a folk dance group in traditional costume will attend and demonstrate folk dancing. Traditionally the food eaten is a herring buffet, strawberry cream cake and in the evening a barbecue, and often you get together with friends and family to celebrate. However, everyone is welcome to dance around the maypole and in a few places you can also enjoy the midsummer food. In the culture reserve Åsens By you can experience an old-fashioned midsummer in historical surroundings, bring a picnic basket or purchase coffee and food in the cafeteria. In Korrö Hantverksby there is also a celebration in historical surroundings and a herring buffet is served. If you would rather breathe some sea air you should go to Idö in Västervik’s outer archipelago where you can celebrate traditionally and eat both a herring lunch and a barbecue in the evening. THE ARCHIPELAGO CITY
Would you like the best of two worlds, both the pulse of the city and the peacefulness of the sea? In that case Västervik is the best place to stop in Småland.
many activities to occupy yourself with. You can jump onto a tractor platform and go sightseeing around the island, rent a kayak and discover the surroundings from the water or rent a bike and discover the island on your own, such as old fishing villages, cow pastures, clearings and beautiful scenery. If your stomach starts to rumble you can sit down at a table in the restaurant Sjökanten and eat an archipelago buffet. On Idö the archipelago lunch has also become somewhat of a classic. If you want to explore island life you should sign up for a seal and sea eagle safari.
within a radius of just a few hundred meters you can find anything from cosy cafés and shopping to summer concerts and a swim in the sea. Why not make an outing to one of the holiday resorts that are located close by? From a choice of approx. 5,000 islands and skerries taking a boat trip to Hasselö or Idö is the obvious choice. Hasselö is the very image of pleasant family life in the archipelago. On the big green island, with red little cottages and a large sandy beach there are
VÄSTERVIK RESORT LYSINGSBADET What once started as an ambition to build a swimming area and a few camping spots has now evolved into the largest resort in Sweden. A total of 142 cottages and 900 camping spots share an area that is equivalent to 180 football fields. Two restaurants, inflatable castles, cableway, artificial ice rink and no less than 43 children’s activities a week make the family experience complete. Add to that the new 2,000 square metres large water park. 43
If you want to make a day trip you can take your car along the winding inland roads towards Vimmerby and discover Astrid Lindgren’s World which is located only 60 km away and , if you like, a moose park. Take the opportunity and book your vacation week in Västervik at a time when one of the city’s major events are taking place. How about VisFestivalen (song festival) which takes place during week 28 each year. ”All” of the major Swedish artists have performed here over the years. In 2015 the festival will celebrate its 50 year anniversary and they promise that it will be something very special. Another event is HojRock which is the biggest bike event in the Nordic countries with 14,000 visitors from all over Northern Europe. There is also Skärgårdsdagen (Archipelago Day) which includes Hasselörodden where old rowboats are handled by classically dressed rowers, both men and women, from the outer archipelago, an exciting experience. FANTASTIC FISHING

GREAT CATCHES IN EMÅN Few fish are as mysterious as the wels catfish, a beast that may weigh up to 15 kilos and which is only found in a few places in Sweden. Emån is one of those. Fishermen travel to Emån both to catch large salmons and sea trout but also to get a glimpse of the timid wels catfish. Rent your own cottage next to Emån in Ädelfors or stay at Grönskogs gård and get that manor feel. FISHING FOR CRAYFISH AND A GENUINE CRAYFISH PARTY Experience a traditional, Swedish crayfish party with hats, songs and typical accompaniments. At Paradis Fiskecamp, Wallby Säteri and Hotel Mullsjö you can fish for crayfish by submerging cages in the morning and eating the contents in the evening. Accommodation is available on site. At Paradis Fiskecamp you may choose your own red cottage with nature as your neighbour. VARIETY IN VÄTTERN As many as 31 species of fish and visibility depth of up to 17 metres make Vättern very exciting as a fishing destination. Here you can catch delicacies such as char and freshwater salmon, but also common species such as zander, pike and perch. The fishing guide Henrik Olsson also recommends ice fishing for those who wish to see Småland in the winter and experience fishing in a different way. BOLMEN – RICH IN FISH Bolmen is Sweden’s tenth biggest lake. Here you will find as many as 24 species of fish, over 300 islands and numerous coves to fish in. Not surprisingly, this is a very popular fishing lake. If you are lucky you may even get salmon or trout on the hook. Both Björn’s Sports Fishing Guide and Kjellvi’s Fishing Guide offer fishing trips in modern boats. Look for accommodation close to the beach: a few suggestions are Bolmen Marin & Fritid, Bolmstad Säteri and Bolmsö Island Camping. CATCH AND RELEASE AT SEA At Västervik’s Fiskecamp the guides speak Swedish, English, Russian, German and Polish, and perhaps also the language of the fish because they almost always catch something. You choose the fish – salmon, pike, sea trout and perch – Västervik’s Fiskecamp takes you to the right location. Please plan ahead so that they can recommend the right time period. Stay at nearby Lysingsbadet, but be sure to choose a cottage close to the water so that you can keep an eye on when the fish come to the surface. SMART FISHING With the app Fish Kingdom you will know where your favourite fish are hiding. Download the app for free and click on a species and all lakes and waterways where you can fish for it will be listed. You may also purchase a fishing licence through the app. WWW.VISITSMALAND.SE

THE GREAT CHALLENGE
Pike, Sweden’s number one predatory fish, can be caught almost everywhere in Småland, but at Getnö Gård – Lake Åsnen Resort – there is basically a pike guarantee. A guide will show you where the pikes are lurking and then it is up to you to try to catch one. The waters are well-known for their large pikes so be prepared with both rod and camera. During warm summer nights you may also go night-fishing for zander. Children may attend nature school where fishing is high on the wish list. Stay at Getnö Gård in a cottage or on the nature campsite.
The biggest predator fish in Swedish waters is both big and ferocious – it eats young birds, rodents and fellow species. if you manage to catch a pike, be prepared for it to put up a fight. This is why so many sports fishermen pay tribute to it. It is also why the European Championships in pike fishing take place in Västervik, which has among the best fishing waters in the world, and why Discovery Channel and National Geographic have both visited the area to make documentaries about pike fishing. If you want to catch a pike you need not only a good rod but also knowledge. Enlist the help of one of the many fishing guides in Småland to make your pike fishing the best possible. At www.visitsmaland.se you will find contact information for guides wherever you are travelling in Småland. Once you have a pike on the hook, remember that it could be a big one. By that we mean up to 20 kilos and with a jaw filled with hundreds of reclining teeth to ensure that the prey doesn’t get away. But don’t believe the myths about “crown pikes” – pikes that supposedly have the claws of a predatory bird embedded in their back after an aerial attack which ended with the fish dragging the bird down into the water. Do believe, however, that your first pike will stay in your memory for the rest of your life. If, that is, you dare drop the lure into the water in the first place!

A TASTE OF SMÅLAND
Food and wine experiences of absolute world class may not be what you expect outside major metropolises. But perhaps it is precisely the smallscaliness, creativity and closeness to the ingredients which has put several Småland kitchens on the culinary world map. Tommy Myllymäki, Sjön PM & VÄNNER, VÄXJÖ Again and again PM & Vänner is rewarded for its genuine and caring food culture. Most recently with a 15th place in the exclusive White Guide Norden. The restaurant is one of the best in the country and is aiming to maintain local food traditions while also having international ambitions. The consistent trinity is “Forest, Meadow and Lake” and each plate serves a well-balanced taste of Småland. The restaurant is complemented by a newly opened gastro-hotel in the same spirit. In collaboration with recognised designers of the region and materials that are connected to the Småland wilderness, the culinary experience has been given an additional dimension. At PM & Vänner the food and accommodations are simply top class. SJÖN, JÖNKÖPING Top chef Tommy Myllymäki’s newly established restaurant is situated next to the city of Jönköping’s own sandy beach. It’s name is simply “Sjön” and from your table you get a view that extends for miles over Vättern. That is also the origin of some
of the fish included on the well-composed menu, including the unique Vättern char. It is accompanied on the plate by other Swedish classics and rarities, all served with that something extra. Sjön has placed Jönköping on the culinary map and it is included in the top 30 of the White Guide Norden. In spite of his young age Tommy Myllymäki has gained international recognition and he has won several important awards for his cooking. SLOTTSRESTAURANGEN KALMAR White linen tablecloths, silver cutlery and candlelight under centuries-old vaults. The atmosphere in Slottsrestaurangen is the very best, a mix of top modern kitchen and a history rich in tradition. This is where you come to enjoy world-class food and beverages, in an environment that gives the right feeling of feast. This is where members of the royal family have enjoyed meals during hundreds of years and who knows - perhaps Gustav Vasa himself or Queen Kristina have sat at the same table? The creative menu follows the changes of the season and always offer new refined taste sensations. 50
LINNÉA ART RESTAURANT, KOSTA BODA ART HOTEL The Linnéa Art Restaurant has taken its name from the Småland province flower and has been decorated by the glass designer Ulrica HydmanVallien. That means that it will be a special experience for the eyes as well. Yes, the entire menu has been inspired by glass. The kitchen delivers meals of the highest quality and in a short period of time the restaurant has landed on the top 30 list of the White Guide Norden. The carefully selected ingredients come to a great extent from local farms. DEN SMÅLÄNDSKA KOLONIN, JÖNKÖPING Behind an unpretentious front you find the little restaurant with the big taste sensations. A dedicated group serves food that is top class and spice up the experience with personality, dedication and stubbornness. The high quality has given them a top 30 placement in the White Guide Norden.

Wherever you are in Småland you will notice how locally and organically produced food is cherished. urban cultivation is emerging in more and more cities and in the countryside there are many nice farm shops. This is where you can find the typical Småland specialities isterband sausage and cheese cake. What do they taste like? Just delicious! The cheese cake has for a long time had its own special spot at a Småland party and everyone who bakes has their own recipe. At Sussie’s café in Flattinge north of Ljungby they bake cheese cake and it is always found on the menu. If you want to be sure to find a menu that includes locally produced isterband sausage, go to Korrö Restaurant and Café in Linneryd. These specialities may of course be found all over Småland - just ask! To enjoy good food is not just about tasting but
also to see with your own eyes how it is made and where it comes from. In Vimmerby Håkan’s Happy Pigs stay outside all year round and you can see for yourself how happy they are. After shopping in the farm shop you may actually be brave enough to go back and pet them. This is also the case at Fröset’s farm in Landsbro where you can discover delicious goat cheeses. Children love to pet the goats on the farm and watch as the young kids jump around. The whole family can also participate in discovering the secret of baking bread in a stone oven. At Askebo Brygghus in Gislaved everyone gathers around the wood-fired oven to learn this noble art, a craft suitable for both small and big hands.
The Småland specialities may be found in every other café, both in cities and in the countryside. Just look for “hembakat” (home baked) or “närodlat” (locally grown) and your coffee break will be extra nice and full of flavour. Sometimes restaurants even get their produce from their own cultivation next door, like Timjan café & restaurant in Vrigstad. Here they have a herb garden with more than 150 different medicinal plants, both for cooking with and for sale. Many restaurants also serve beer from nearby microbreweries. A visit to for example Ängö Kvarterbryggeri in Kalmar gives an interesting insight into this area of food culture. During the summer they also organise their own beer festival. WWW.VISITSMALAND.SE

SUSTAINABLE
FOOD
EXPERIENCE
Växjö is a culinary city with ambitions and it is hardly a coincidence that the Government nominated Växjö as the Culinary Nation’s Capital of the Year 2015.
local food producers and an abundance of cafés and restaurants make the city well worth a visit. In Växjö you will find the entire range from affordable family restaurants and international kitchens to award-winning fine dining experiences of the best quality. The region is full of food producers that have dedicated their lives to cheeses, sausages, juices, beer, fruit, vegetables etc. In Växjö they care about the origin of the ingredient. The interest for sustainable food is great and the kitchens of the city are good at picking up and using organic and locally-produced ingredients. Kafé de Luxe with its more fancy sister restaurant Gräddhyllan de Luxe both emphasise local and organic food. In a setting that has a retro feel you will be served a mix of the genuine, the elegant and the creative. Locally-oriented dishes vary according to season and the vegetarian selection is always well-composed. Food that touches your senses, is the motto of the restaurateurs and it is important to them that people of
all kinds and ages enjoy visiting them. Perhaps it is natural that they also operate Bondens Butik (Farmer’s Shop), a loving tribute to the area’s locally-produced food. Be sure to visit the lively market in Stortorget, the main city square. Every Wednesday and Saturday all year the square is transformed into a well-attended marketplace. During late summer there is also a Farmer’s Market beside the lake in central Växjö, offering a unique range of small-scale and locally-produced goods. An opportunity to meet the food producers and talk about cultivation and livestock farming. A little further east you will find a special vegetable garden, Östrabo Ekobacke. On land that once formed the border between the countryside and the city grid lies a scenic organic growing area. Here, locals and small-scale growers share the fertile land in the middle of the city. Växjö is well on its way to becoming a natural meeting place for people and food, notes the jury in its motivation for the Culinary Nation’s 52
Capital of the Year. The MAT (FOOD) festival on 10–12 September is one of the most important events of the year. During three days, Växjö becomes a national meeting place for anything to do with locally-produced, small-scale and sustainable meals. Last year the food festival attracted as many as 50,000 visitors and more than 100 exhibitors, which makes it the largest market for small-scale food producers in Sweden. MYTHICAL CHARACTERS Blå Jungfrun
In Småland we know how to tell fairytales and scary stories – come with us to the trolls of the forest and the witches’ island if you dare... John Bauer
the story-telling district in the southwest of Småland has its own museum – the Museum of Legends in Ljungby is exciting for both children and adults. It is situated in a district with innumerable legendary sites. Fantastic stories and legends about gnomes and trolls, the water spirit and wood nymph, demons and ghouls have always amused and scared people. The stories passed from mouth to mouth, from generation to generation. The Museum of Legends brings to life the oral story-telling tradition in Sweden in many different ways and it has been combined with modern technology. Find the legendary sites using geocaching or an iPhone app – search for “Sagobygden” in order to download it. Here you can also listen to the stories in three languages, but it is just as easy to download Mp3 files at www.onspotstory.com. You will be taken to exciting and beautiful sites in the Land of Legends, which you may never otherwise have found. Crawl into the cave where a small child was hidden! Try to move the giant stone! Walk up to the top of gallows hill!
One of the greatest names in illustration of the world of fairytales is John Bauer who became famous for bringing to life the Småland primeval forest and its characters. Through the book “Among gnomes and trolls” he became widely known. He was born in Jönköping where he found his inspiration in the Småland primeval forests. The forest landscape is the background to which he added small gnomes and trolls in various forms. You will find an exhibition of his work at the Jönköping County Museum. Blå Jungfrun is a legendary island located between Öland and the mainland port of Oskarshamn. Since the beginning of time stories have been told about this island. The best-known legend has the witches going to Blåkulla, as the island is called in these tales, on Maundy Thursday to meet Satan and celebrate the Witches’ Sabbath. According to popular belief they flew to the island on broomsticks and held meetings to try out their witchcraft. ACTIVITIES ALL YEAR ROUND
Isaberg – an adventure mountain resort. the primary rock hill 310 metres above sea level has become somewhat of an eldorado for all lovers of outdoor pursuits. From the top of the mountain you have a panoramic view of the surroundings, extending for miles and miles. You see the glittering mirror surface of the lake Algutstorpasjön and the river Nissan winding its way through the landscape. Isaberg in the winter offers southern Sweden’s largest ski resort with ten slopes, from black pistes to children’s slopes and everything in between. Six lifts ensure that the queues to the top are never long. A good end to your day’s skiing is a visit to Toppstugan where there is After Ski – or you can rent a barbecue hut and gather the family or a group of friends there for a good time. In the summer the Adventure Mountain and its surroundings have several attractive hiking and mountain bike trails. During the spring, summer and autumn, road and mountain biking camps and competitions for professional riders and amateurs
are organised. The area has 10 mountain bike trails, pump tracks and also a newly built technique track (Swedish Championship track) for those who wish to practice jumps and drops. In July the Swedish Championships will be held at Isaberg Mountain Resort. If you would like to go paddling in a kayak or canoe the lake Algutstorpasjön and the river Nissan are just a short distance away from the resort. Along Nissan there is a canoe trail with 10 resting areas where you can barbecue or stay overnight in wind shelters. Canoe checks can be purchased in the reception at Isaberg Mountain Resort. Another attraction not to be missed is Isaberg Mountain Resort’s popular high rope course. The children have their very own special adventure playground. Count on a long visit there as it is fun for children of all ages. You can also look for moose at Isaberg, since there are several in the area’s own moose park. The park has been adapted to the natural living conditions of the moose in an area
covering 6 hectares, where the animals graze and wander around freely. We strongly recommend that you stay at Isaberg Mountain Resort so that you really have the time to enjoy everything on offer. Choose whether to camp, to stay in a cottage with self-catering or in one with hotel services. If you are travelling as a big group the pleasant lodge houses are recommended, with room for 12 people and equipped with their own sauna. Isaberg Mountain Resort has been approved by the quality system Swedish Welcome, which strives to ensure better experiences and sustainable development. Good meals prepared with local ingredients inspired by Isaberg’s beautiful surroundings are served in the restaurant Höganloft. Isaberg Mountain Resort is truly a complete resort if you like outdoor life, activities and good food, and enjoy relaxing in nature! WWW.VISITSMALAND.SE

COMING UP 2016 We’re looking ahead – great things will be happening in Småland in 2016 IKEA MUSEUM The only IKEA Museum in the world opens in the spring of 2016 in Älmhult where Ingvar Kamprad built his very first store in 1958. The modern store has now moved to new premises and is said to contain the world’s largest range of goods. The old store has been given a new mandate – to be home to the first and only IKEA Museum, which will be a house of stories about people, challenges, opportunities, designs, home and home decorations. ONE OF THE ABBA STARS IS OPENING A HOTEL IN VÄSTERVIK The former ABBA member Björn Ulvaeus grew up in Västervik and that is where he is now building Slottsholmen’s Hotel with a marina in the centre of town. It will have 60 rooms, all with amazing seaviews. And plans are in the making for a very unique Mamma Mia Suite! THE SOUTH EAST TRAIL – A 270 KM LONG BIKE TRAIL FROM THE SOUTH COAST TO THE INLAND This will be a car-free trail of international standard that will extend from Simrishamn by the sea in the south with blossoming rapseed fields and apple orchards to dense forests and lakes in the north, and ending in Växjö. It offers a rich and varied trip through countryside of historical and natural interest. WOOD 2016 IN VIRSERUM’S KONSTHALL Småland’s surface area consists of 73% forest and is both a recreational environment and an important source of income. Sustainability is the theme for Wood 2016 which will take place at Virserum’s Konsthall in the centre of Småland. EUROPEAN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP FOR WOMEN AMATEURS 2016 The fight for the women’s amateur title will be decided at Hooks Golf Club on 20–23 July 2016. This will be a a 72 hole stroke play tournament. The last time the tournament was played in Sweden, in 2009 at Falsterbo, it was won by Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall. Hook is a complete golf facility with two excellent 18 hole courses and the delightful Hooks Herrgård manor house to cap it all off.

THE THREE PROVINCIAL
CAPITALS
The three provincial capitals Kalmar, Växjö and Jönköping are cities with charm, good shopping and plenty of restaurants and cafés. You will enjoy it here whether you like shopping, night life, culture or just strolling around looking at people. Izakaya Moshi, Växjö
kalmar is a city full of contrasts. It is a mix of past and present, relaxation and pulse. Historical buildings, cobblestoned streets and beautiful parks give charm and character to the city. There is also a wide range of shops, restaurants and pubs. Within walking and biking distance you can enjoy parks, meadows, the sea, museums and the historically significant Kalmar Castle. A few musts for your visit to Kalmar: Krusenstiernska gården, Kalmar City Park, Kalmar Art Museum and Kalmar Castle. jönköping is surrounded by water and boasts of having a two kilometres long sandy beach in the middle of the city, a canal, a pier and wooden docks that provide the setting for enjoyable moments and a pulsating nightlife by the water. Elmia is here, the leading trade fair company in the Nordic countries, and there are many visitors that flock to various fairs. You will find shopping in the centre of the city with a good selection as well as one-stop shopping at the shopping centre A6. The city is particularly proud of
it’s cultural and industrial history, both the famous matchsticks and the Husqvarna chainsaws are from Jönköping and can be seen at the Matchstick Museum and Husqvarna Industrial Museum. växjö – the lakeside city where roads meet. Hence the name of this junction, surrounded by lakes and waterways. The city dates back to the 12th century with a cathedral where the oldest parts date back to the same period. Växjö is known as the greenest city in Europe with its many parks, a cycling culture and the lake Växjösjön in the middle of the city, although it originally got its epithet as the result of a strong environmental commitment. If you feel like shopping there are two choices: The city centre with small shops and cosy cafés or the shopping centre Grand Samarkand – both have received awards as the best of their kind in Sweden. Do not miss: The Cathedral, the House of Emigrants, Kronoberg’s Castle Ruins, Kulturparken Småland with the Swedish Glass Museum and Teleborg’s Castle. 60
