Kristiansand is Southern Norway’s largest city and traffic hub. There is plenty to do with attractions such as Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park, the new theatre and concert hall Kilden Performing Arts Centre, museums and galleries. Outstanding restaurants and buzzing activity on Fiskebrygga quay, a great atmosphere at Torvet, excellent shopping, a wander through the old district Posebyen among white wooden buildings or lazy days by the sea make it easy to have a great time in the capital of Southern Norway.

Do you enjoy swimming off delightful beaches, canoeing, boat trips, camping or visiting idyllic outlying harbours? Raet National Park was created in 2016 to protect the special natural area which extends from the Grimstad along the entire Arendal coastal strip to Lyngør in Tvedestrand.

BRUFJELL Brufjell is in Åna-Sira just outside Flekkefjord. The place is famous for its very special potholes, and you can enjoy panoramic views of the whole coast on your way there. There is a marked path to the potholes. Remember to bring sturdy footwear, plenty to drink and your camera.

is a stretch of coast between Lillesand and Kristiansand. Shielded from the ocean by the islands, islets and skerries of the archipelago, boats can sail safely in sheltered waters. There is buzzing activity here in summer when the cabins and holiday homes in the area fill up with holidaymakers and boating enthusiasts heading out to sea. A sightseeing boat operates a daily service with daily departures between Lillesand and Kristiansand during summer.

LYNGØR This island community, which is situated between Risør and Tvedestrand, has been voted the best preserved village in Europe. In the Age of Sail, Lyngør’s harbour buzzed with activity, but today there are only about 80 permanent residents left on the islands. The place comes alive in summer, however. Ferry connection to the mainland with several daily departures.

The river Otra is one of the largest waterways in Southern Norway and has a large stock of trout. One fishing licence covers 150 kilometres. It is also possible to go mountain lake fishing.

We recommend taking the coast road south through Stord on the way back. Follow the road to Haugesund, drive to the island of Karmøy and take the ferry from Skudeneshavn to Stavanger. Follow the North Sea Road from Stavanger to Kristiansand.

SHORT OR LONG HIKING TRAILS Throughout the valley there are excellent opportunities for walking and hiking. From Evje in the south to Hovden in the north, amazing viewpoints await you.

The Setesdal valley is known for its rich cultural heritage. Setesdal has long traditions within the silversmith’s craft, folk music and production of the bunad, the Norwegian national costume.

The trip starts in Kristiansand. Follow Telemarksvegen road (the Rv41 road) towards Åmli and on to Dalen in Telemark county.

Per Eide

Nordsjøvegen

From Dalen it’s also easy to drive directly to Valle and Bykle in Setesdal. The town of Rjukan is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List due to its dramatic scenery and exciting World War II history. At 1,883 metres, Gaustatoppen is Telemark’s highest mountain. Follow the Telemark Canal towards the coast.

MUSEUMS, ART AND CULTURE

Round trip 3 There are several great summit walks in Åmli, for example to Lindestadknuten (858 metres). Well-marked paths and magnificent views. Dalen Hotel in Dalen is well worth a visit. With its ‘dragon style’ architecture, it looks like it comes straight out of a fairy tale.

Known as the capital of Fjord Norway, Bergen is a beautiful Hanseatic city with wonderful architecture and many attractions. A walk along the famous Bryggen in Bergen, a visit to the Fish Market in the city centre and a trip on the Fløibanen Funicular to the summit of one of the seven mountains surrounding the city are just a few of the things you should do while you are in Bergen.

FISHING IN SETESDAL

“Via ferrata” is Italian for iron road. This is a climbing route where you are secured to the rock by means of a steel cable. There are also iron rungs in the steepest sections, making the ascent safe and relatively simple. Setesdal offers three different Via ferrata’s.

The two big airports in Southern Norway are Kjevik in Kristiansand and Torp outside Sandefjord. KLM operates a direct service from Amsterdam to Kjevik, Widerøe operates a service from Copenhagen and London and Wizz Air to Gdansk. Torp has an extensive schedule of flights. In addition to KLM, Widerøe and Norwegian, budget airlines Ryanair and Wizz Air also fly to Torp from several destinations in Europe. Both airports have good connections to the biggest airports in Norway. The biggest car rental companies also have offices at both airports.

The trip continues over the Haukelifjell mountains to Røldal and, from there, Odda, innermost in the Hardangerfjord, is just a short distance away. You can choose between several routes to Bergen, but we recommend the new tunnel under the Folgefonna glacier. Take the ferry across the Hardangerfjord from Årsnes to Gjermundshamn and follow the road to Bergen.

Why not also try some local beer from the local breweries Nøgne Ø or Lindesnes Brygghus? Lindesnes Brygghus is Norway’s southernmost brewery.

The mountain village of Hovden, which is situated at the top end of the Setesdal valley, is a perfect starting point for mountain hikes, fishing and mountain biking.

Thanks to its location and climate, the entire Setesdal Valley enjoys long and stable winters. From wide, open country to floodlit trails through th forest. If you prefer hitting the slopes, Hovden is the largest alpine centre in the region.

There are several daily ferry departures from Hirtshals in Denmark to Southern Norway. Color Line sails to Kristiansand and Larvik on the vessels Superspeed 1 and 2. FjordLine operates a summer service from Hirtshals to Kristiansand, and daily departures from Hirtshals to Langesund. colorline.com • fjordline.com

Or perhaps you could take a detour to Eiken and walk one or more sections of the Child Wanderer Path starting from Heddan farm.

The trip, which starts in Kristiansand and takes you north through the Setesdal valley on the RV9 road, is a journey though an exciting cultural history landscape, with activities for the whole family en route. The Setesdal valley is well-known for its rich traditions in folk music, silversmith art, food and building traditions.

The Setesdal Valley – Norway up close®

You should sample some of the region’s local specialities when you visit Southern Norway. Many restaurants and cafés serve locally produced food and beverages. Ask the staff to recommend local fare on the menu.

From Stavanger, drive south along the North Sea Road in the footsteps of the Vikings. The North Sea Road, the stretch of coast between Haugesund and Kristiansand, takes you through beautiful varied scenery. From the flat and wide open landscape of Jæren to more dramatic landscapes between Egersund and Flekkefjord. Here, the roads wind their way up and around deep fjords and high mountains. The landscape of Lista is characterised by large plains and long beaches before again becoming more dramatic in the area around Lindesnes.

‘The white towns’ along the coast of Southern Norway are characteristic of this part of Norway. The towns are known for their narrow streets and white wooden houses in idyllic locations by the sea, and Risør is the town with the best-preserved wooden houses. The town has a rich artistic scene and the archipelago is the town’s ‘park’. At Stangholmen Lighthouse at the very edge of the ocean, you can enjoy great food and drink and explore Risør’s archipelago.

SØRLANDET AND SETESDAL

Sørlandet is what Norwegians call the stretch of coast between Risør in the east and Flekkefjord in the west. Towns of white-painted houses line the coast like pearls on a string, and they are situated right beside the beautiful archipelago. The Setesdal valley, which runs north from Kristiansand, has an exciting history in terms of food culture, folk music, building traditions and the art of silversmith. Setesdal is also known for its many activities and experiences, with plenty on offer for children and adults alike. visitsouthernnorway.com
