WHEN MOTHER NATURE WAS DOING HER THING, WE RECKON SHE SPRINKLED A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA ON THE SUNSHINE COAST.
Check out 7 sustainable travel experiences to try on the Sunshine Coast!
The Noosa Everglades - one of only two everglades systems on Earth - is a 60km stretch of sparkling waterways, fringed by ancient tea tree forests and floating lily pads. In short: it’s seriously dreamy.
The dark, tannin-stained waters combine to make the surface of this waterway so reflective that it has earned the nickname ‘the River of Mirrors’.
On the Sunshine Coast, we’re nestled in nature and green at heart. We care about our environment, from the sparkling coastline to the ancient peaks of the Glass House Mountains and lush rainforests.
And more importantly, we care about preserving it for years to come.
It’s this commitment to living sustainably with nature that makes the Sunshine Coast so special, in fact, we’re the only destination in the world where you’ll find three UNESCO Biosphere Reserves sitting side-by-side.
You can explore our Biosphere Corridor on an eco tour that connects people to place, and go green in our leafy backyard on a guided trek or nature walk.
Here you’ll find some of Australia’s most pristine natural environments, like the Noosa Everglades.
We also have more than 100km of pristine beaches, pockets of subtropical rainforest and the Glass House Mountains - that are actually remnants of volcanic activity that occurred more than 25 million years ago.
Yep, it’s fair to say we’re pretty blessed in these parts.
Here you can discover the beauty of our region while learning about conservation, and sleep peacefully at night in accommodation where sustainability is a way of life.
By each doing our bit, we can work together towards a greener future.
If swimming in cool waterholes and trekking through lush rainforest sounds like your idea of bliss, it’s time you explored our National Parks. You’ll want to visit as many as you can squeeze into your trip, and to make things easy, we’ve rounded up some our favourites.
Be sure to go to parks.des.qld.gov.au for up-to-date information about park conditions and closures.
Nestled in the heart of the Blackall Range, Kondalilla - an Aboriginal word meaning ‘rushing waters’ - perfectly describes this park’s beauty during the summer wet season, where Skene
Creek drops 90m into the leafy valley below. Stretch your legs on one of the shorter walking trails, or set out on the multi-day Hinterland Great Walk which spans 58.8km through Kondalilla and the neighbouring Mapleton National Park.
With its pockets of sub-tropical rainforest and picturesque creek-side camping, Conondale National Park is perfect for those looking to escape it all. Dive a little deeper and you’ll see there’s a little bit of magic sprinkled amongst the towering trees here, including the aqua blue waters of Booloumba Creek and hidden art sculpture - the Strangler Cairn - just waiting to be found.
If you don’t mind sharing secluded beaches, scenic coastal trails and towering gum trees with the locals –the koalas, turtles, and dolphins that is – then Noosa National Park is for you. Here, you can spend your day swimming in the sparkling blue sea, snorkelling amongst the fish and dolphins, surfing the perfect waves and walking the coastal tracks.
As the second largest rock in Australia behind Uluru, it’s fair to say you can’t miss the impressive dome that is Mount Coolum. A short hop, skip and a jump from Coolum Beach, this seaside mountain offers 360-degree views stretching from Point Cartwright and the Glass House Mountains in the south to the Blackall Range in the west and Noosa Heads to the north. Locals tip: time your visit for sunrise or sunset and watch the sky change from blue to pastel pink.
The perfect place to disconnect from regular programming and plug into nature, the Glass House Mountains promise a region that’s ripe for adventure. The 11 rocky outcrops that form the Glass House Mountains are actually remnants of volcanic activity that occurred more than 25 million years ago, and the area is steeped in First Nations history. A playground of hiking trails, waterholes and jawdropping lookouts, you’ll want to set aside a good half day for this adventure.
Hop in a 4WD and travel from Noosa North Shore along the Great Beach Drive – a jaw-dropping length of golden coastline fringed by peach-hued dunes – and you’ll make your way to the Great Sandy National Park. Stretching along the Cooloola Coast to Rainbow Beach, here you’ll be blessed with wide stretches of beach as your highway, incredible surf and pockets of pristine forest. Make sure to take a selfie or two in front of the coloured sand dunes, and keep an eye out for dolphins, turtles, rare bird species and even Humpback whales during the winter months.
Whether you’re in search of the best kid friendly beaches in Queensland, aquatic activities or wildlife adventures – you’ll find something for every age here on the Sunshine Coast.
For the littlies, you can’t go past jumping waves at our kid friendly beaches and chasing water fountains at Kings Beach in Caloundra or Noosa Marina.
For the bigger kids, there’s an endless list of exhilarating water-based adventures from jetskiing, fishing charters to stand-up paddle tours, and inflatable fun on the lake at Bli Bli water park. They can also learn to sail, snorkel and surf!
If the kids prefer getting a little dirty, you’ll dial up the smiles for miles on our countless mountain bike trails, coastal paths and bike tours.
Or roll out the cute and cuddly with a farm-tour at Maleny Dairies Farms,
Planning a holiday this summer but don’t want to leave your four-legged friend behind? Then make use of the Sunshine Coast’s pet friendly accommodation options, leash-free beaches and pooch approved activities.
(including sampling the b.e.s.t. dairy on the coast), take a selfie with Coco the opera singing parrot at Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World; cuddle a koala at Wildlife HQ or smile at a crocodile at Australia Zoo!

As well as beach fishing, there are a number of fishing spots the locals love, from Caloundra Boardwalk to Golden Beach, Pumicestone Passage or the Maroochy and Noosa Rivers where you can fish from the banks or take out a tinny. The best way to do it? Book yourself on a snorkelling adventure with Sunreef Mooloolaba.

ANY FOODIE WORTH THEIR FORK KNOWS THAT THE SUNSHINE COAST’S CULINARY SCENE IS A TASTE-BUD TANTALISER.
Did you know that Mooloolaba is the biggest swordfish port in Australia and one of the busiest seafood ports on Australia’s eastern seaboard? That’s right, the Sunshine Coast is the place for devouring a smorgasbord of crustaceans and fish so fresh, you’ll be dreaming about your feast for months to come. Early each morning you’ll see fleets of trawlers bringing in boatloads of swordfish, Mooloolaba prawns, Spanner crabs, lobsters and export grade tuna. And if you’re after a true local’s experience, you can enjoy it fresh off the trawler at one of the region’s many fish and chipperies (The Spit Mooloolaba is abuzz with them)!
As you drive through the Sunshine Coast Hinterland make sure you keep a look
out for the rustic produce stalls lining the roadside selling everything from pineapples to macadamia nuts, avocados and citrus freshly picked that morning. If you wonder just what goes on beyond the farm gate, take part in a Farm to Fork tour, visit a winery or embark on a factory tour.
With so much fresh local produce at their fingertips, it’s little wonder the Sunshine Coast has such a thriving café and restaurant culture. Here chefs are spoiled for choice, and the end result is a slew of award-winning eateries. From fine dining with a twist to innovative street eats, you’ll want to arrive hungry. No matter where you decide to feast, one thing every eatery has in common is their passion for showcasing the local produce the region is renowned for.
We have a Coffee Roasters Guild - the first in Australia! Here, roasted beans are distributed to cafés all over the Sunshine Coast and beyond!
With more craft breweries per capita than any state or territory in Australia, it’s fair to say we take our craft beer pretty seriously.
At last count more than 22 independent brewers have set up shop on the Sunshine Coast, meaning no matter which part of the region you find yourself in, there’s likely to be a crisp IPA or a zesty sour nearby with your name on it.
From beachside brewers to hinterland hops, visiting our breweries will take your senses on a journey, and we guarantee you’ll be able to taste the sunshine in every glass. Here brewers like to go paddock to pint, taking inspiration in their surroundings and working with local producers to create their award-winning tipples.
Take Brouhaha Brewery in Maleny for example who use local strawberries to make their tasty Strawberry Rhubarb Sour, or Noosa’s Land and Sea Brewery who pack their sours with juicy Queensland mangoes.
You’ll quickly find that behind every great craft beer here is a local brewer with a yarn to share. We not only have some of Australia’s best craft brews - seriously,
we’ve got the trophy cabinet to prove itbut also some of the best stories.

For a personalised experience, go behind the taps on a craft beer tour where yarns and taste testing aren’t just encouraged, they’re guaranteed.
If you’re after something a little stronger, we also have our fair share of distillers taking up residence on the Sunshine Coast creating delicious gins, vodka and rum. You’ll want to visit Beachtree Distilling Co in Caloundra who pack their gins with native ingredients including lemon myrtle and mountain pepper berries. And to try Australia’s first certified organic rum, make tracks to CAVU Distilling, the proud makers of Nil Desperandum rum and Sunshine & Sons gin and vodka.
