Mayoral message Australian Events Awards
We are delighted to welcome the Australian Event Awards to the Sunshine Coast again in 2017. After a very successful and enjoyable awards night and conference at Twin Waters Resort in 2016, this year we will be based at The Events Centre, Caloundra – our region’s premier performing arts and conference centre. The staging of these national awards once again on the Sunshine Coast reinforces our growing reputation as Australia’s leading regional events destination. The Sunshine Coast community has long been known Australia-wide for welcoming events to our region and that recognition continues to grow domestically and internationally. We pride ourselves on being an ‘event-friendly’ destination; a reputation that has been many years in the making. Hosting these awards is a great opportunity to showcase our healthy, smart and creative region and our capability to host major events to the events industry. In a memorable 2016, we hosted 60 major events which welcomed around 150,000 national and international guests, generating about $100 million in economic activity. In 2017, our calendar is just as busy as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast. These high quality events provide not only fantastic opportunities for our community to be involved as a participant, spectator or volunteer, they provide long-term benefits for the Sunshine Coast economy. I extend a warm welcome to the Australian Event Awards participants and attendees. We look forward to hosting the Australia Event Awards at beautiful Caloundra, and through your participation hope you experience and enjoy everything our great region has to offer. With best regards
MARK JAMIESON MAYOR

From sun-kissed surfers to bohemian artists, there is no shortage of friendly people with easy smiles. It’s no surprise they’re happy, as the region enjoys a subtropical climate with plenty of warmth – in fact an average of 300 days of sunshine per year. This guarantees a big sunny welcome!

50 years and still shining The 1960s was one of the most colourful eras in the region’s history, with 1967 arguably the ‘sunniest’ of them all, with flower power at its zenith, so it proved a perfect year for the ‘Near North Coast’ to be renamed the ‘Sunshine Coast’.
The naming of the Sunshine Coast will be commemorated and celebrated throughout 2017. This will mark half a century of people, places and events in the region since the Sunshine Coast officially received its name, ‘Sunshine Coast’. Turning 50 is a huge milestone as it highlights just how much Queensland’s favourite holiday destination has developed and changed over time.

Did you know? • The Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club, formed on 1 January 1916, was the first life saving club on the Sunshine Coast. • An RAAF jet touched down at the Maroochy Airport (now the Sunshine Coast Airport) in April 1983 with royal visitors Prince Charles and Princess Diana, who came to visit the Ginger Factory and attend a reception at the Sunshine Plantation (now The Big Pineapple). Adoring crowds lined the local streets and roads to catch a glimpse of the popular Princess.

Beaches galore Sunshine Coast beaches are, quite simply, some of the best in the world. They are rimmed with wide stretches of clean, white sand, with a choice of surf or calm bays sparkling with warm water. Whether you’re searching for a secluded patch of sand to sink your toes into and soak up the sunshine, a family-friendly spot where the kids can make friends with other sandcastle-makers or the best dog-friendly spots, the Sunshine Coast has dozens of safe and picturesque beaches to choose from. Of note, Kings Beach was voted the state’s best beach by Surf Life Saving Queensland, while Mooloolaba Beach ranked sixth and Noosa Main Beach polled ninth in TripAdvisor’s top 25 beaches in Australia. Mooloolaba and Noosa are also two of very few northern facing beaches on the east coast of Australia, where the water is calm and enticing year-round. Experience the true spirit of the iconic beach vibe by mixing with the locals and soaking in views of sand, surf and salt from the best vantage point over a meal or cold beverage, at one of the many affordable and family-friendly surf clubs. Please remember to enjoy Sunshine Coast beaches by always swimming between the red and yellow flags at one of the many patrolled beaches, and follow the instructions and advice of the surf life savers on duty.

The Sunshine Coast is known for its rich biodiverse habitat, with some species found nowhere else in the world. Queensland’s tallest tree – a 74 metre high flooded gum Eucalyptus Grandis – can be found in Conondale National Park.
Explore a beautiful coastline as you wind your way along the coastal path, and picnic with sweeping ocean views in popular Noosa National Park or the Great Sandy National Park. Great Beach Drive If you want to get off the beaten track, head for the Great Sandy National Park and take to the beach in your 4WD. Cruise along the shoreline, marvel at the coastal cliffs and coloured sands, throw in your fishing line and catch yourself dinner. You’ll need a vehicle permit to drive along the sand and there are some places where camping is restricted, so be sure to check the signs before you set off on your adventure, or alternatively book a tour. Packed with a diversity of nature and wildlife, this area represents the only place in the world where there are two adjoining Biosphere Reserves recognised by UNESCO: the Noosa Biosphere and Great Sandy Biosphere.
Top 4 natural highlights The Glass House Mountains are magnificent rocky outcrops and actually remnants of volcanic activity that occurred about 25 million years ago. As the volcanic mountains cooled, stunning vertical columns emerged. Today, they have become iconic landmarks on the Sunshine Coast and a popular location for bushwalkers and hikers to explore. The most notable peaks are Mount Beerwah, Mount Tibgrogargan, Mount Coochin and Mount Coonowrin.

The Noosa Everglades is one of only two everglade systems in the world. For the ultimate in serene tranquility, the area is best explored on an eco-cruise or in a kayak. There are banksias, tea trees, melaleucas, reeds and water lilies along the water’s edge. Marvel at the reflections of the flora on the banks of the water that appear like a mirage; it’s no surprise that the upper reaches of the Noosa River is often referred to as the River of Mirrors.
One of the most spectacular things about The Great Sandy National Park section of coastline is the multicoloured rocks and sand that have been created by iron-rich minerals in the dunes which, over thousands of years, have stained the sand into a variety of shades of yellow, red, orange and brown. Also worth checking out is Carlo Sand Blow’s breathtaking views of Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay, the coloured sands and Fraser Island.

Channel your culture vulture The Sunshine Coast area evolved from an isolated farm community at the turn of the 20th century to hippie stronghold during the 60s, then to a creative hub starting in the 70s. There is no doubt the region attracts a creative class of people, and the originality of the artistic community has helped shape the region’s colour, character and energy.

Horizon Festival of Arts and Culture
The Sunshine Coast Hinterland in particular claims a heavy concentration of arty folk. It is the hub for talented visual artists, renowned galleries, studios and theatres that spans out across the Sunshine Coast. Venture along the Art Gallery Trail and you will soon discover a world of oil and water colour paintings, sandstone and marble sculptures, porcelain and hand-blown glass, wood and textiles, jewellery and photography and much more. Add to this the visual pleasures offered by the picturesque landscapes as you drive along the way, and it’s clear that the trail is as much about the natural environment as it is about art.

Fresh seafood Mooloolaba is the biggest swordfish port in Australia and is one of the busiest ports on the eastern seaboard. The wharf is a hive of daily activity – with trawlers bringing in boatloads of fish, Mooloolaba prawns, lobsters and spanner crabs.
The Sunshine Coast is also home to strong aquaculture industries – with Red Claw Crayfish, barramundi and various species of prawns farmed in the region. The best place to grab the catch of the day is on Parkyn Parade in Mooloolaba, where you’ll find a range of fish markets and takeaway shops, all offering fresh local seafood.
